BULLDOGS TO MAKE 2010-11 WCHA DEBUTS THIS WEEKEND WITH TWO-GAME SET AGAINST ALASKA ANCHORAGE
THE GAMES: The University of Minnesota Duluth will put
its four-game unbeaten streak on the line this Friday
and Saturday (Oct. 22-23) when the Bulldogs host the
University of Alaska Anchorage in the 2010-11 Western Collegiate Hockey Association openers for both
clubs. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. each night at the
Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (5,294).
THE RECORDS: The Bulldogs, who are off to a 3-0-1
start in 2010-11, were 22-17-1 in all games one
year ago and tied for fourth place (with the University
of North Dakota) in the WCHA standings at 16-11-1.
Alaska Anchorage, 1-2-1 this season, posted a 1123-5 overall record in 2009-10 and a 9-17-2 WCHA
mark (tied for eighth place with Minnesota State
University-Mankato).

ON THE AIR: The UMD-Alaska Anchorage series will be
carried locally on 94X (94.1/104.3 FM) with Bruce
Ciskie handling the play-by-play and former Bulldog
winger Kraig Karakas providing color commentary. The
broadcast can also be heard on KQ 105.5 in Grand
Rapids/Hibbing and KQ 106.7 in Ely/Virginia as part
of the Bulldog Radio Network and can be accessed
on the internet at: 94xrocks.com.
In addition, both of this weekend’s games will be

THE COACH: The 2003-04 American Hockey Coaches
Association NCAA Division I Coach of the Year (Spencer Penrose Award), Scott Sandelin is in his 11th year
behind the UMD bench where he has compiled a
169-189-47 overall record -- including a 47-29-10
mark since the 2008-09 opener. In addition to posting back-to-back 22-win seasons, his Bulldogs have
advanced to five of the past eight WCHA Final Five
tournaments and, in March 2009, became the first
play-in game participant to win it all in that event’s
history. UMD also strung together a school-record sixgame postseason winning streak in 2008-09 until it
fell to Miami University 2-1 in the NCAA West Regional
final. Six years ago, Sandelin, 46, turned UMD into a
NCAA Frozen Four participant for the first time in nearly
a generation, marshaling his troops to their most victories (they were 28-13-4 overall) and highest WCHA
finish (second place on a 19-7-2 mark) in 11 seasons.
For his efforts, the Hibbing, Minn., native was chosen
the WCHA Coach of the Year as well as the national
coach of the year by both insidecollegehockey.com

22-15-5 overall and captured fifth place in the WCHA
with a 14-10-4 mark while experiencing the greatest one-season turnaround of any league club that
winter. One year earlier, he guided UMD to a 13-24-1
record in all games -- nearly doubling the number of
victories from the previous season (7-28-4). Sandelin
officially signed on as a member of the Bulldog staff

on March 31, 2000 following six years of assistant
coaching deployment at North Dakota. Prior to joining
the Fighting Sioux (who won two NCAA titles during
his tenure), Sandelin spent the 1993-94 season as
the head coach of the Fargo-Moorhead Junior Kings
of the Junior Elite Hockey League after working in that
same capacity (and doubling as general manager) the
previous winter with the American Hockey Association’s
Fargo-Moorhead Express. He capped off his four-year
playing career at North Dakota in 1985-86 by being named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker
Memorial Award. An All-WCHA first team pick and
an All-American second team selection as a senior,
Sandelin went on to play seven years of professional
hockey, which included National Hockey League stints
with the Montreal Canadiens (1986-88), Philadelphia
Flyers (1990-91) and Minnesota North Stars (199192). Sandelin, one of just two current WCHA coaches
to do time in the National Hockey League, was the
Montreal Canadiens’ second round pick in the 1982
NHL draft (40th choice overall). He served as Team
USA’s head coach at the 2005 International Ice
Hockey Federation World Junior Championships and
directed that club to a fourth-place finish.
Dave Shyiak (Northern Michigan University, 1993) is
in his sixth year at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage
puck program and has a 51-111-12 record to show
for it (including an even 5-5-2 mark against UMD).
Shyiak signed on as the fourth head coach in the
26-year history of the Alaska Anchorage hockey program in June 2005 after serving a 10-year assistant
coaching stint at his alma mater, Northern Michigan.
During that decade stretch, the Wildcats posted seven
20-win seasons, earned six Central Collegiate Hockey
Association tournament berths and made one NCAA
postseason appearance (1998-99). In 1994-95,
Shyiak was employed as the general manager and
head coach of the British Columbia Hockey League’s
Merritt Centennials and as the head coach of the
Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League’s Kimberley
Dynamites one year earlier. A four-year letterman at
Northern Michigan, Shyiak co-captained the Wildcats
to the 1991 NCAA title.
THE SERIES: This weekend’s series will mark the 70th
and 71st meetings ever between UMD and Alaska
Anchorage. The Bulldogs hold a commanding 38-1912 lead in the all-time series, which began on Nov. 8,
1985 in Duluth, but have managed just one win (6-3
in the 2009-10 regular season finale in Anchorage
last March) in their last eight confrontations with the
Seawolves (1-5-2).
LAST WEEKEND: The Bulldogs swept a two-game set
from Providence College in their final home openers
ever at the DECC as they bested the Friars 5-3 Friday
and 7-1 the following night. Junior left winger Mike
Connolly scored twice and helped set up another
goal Friday while junior center Travis Oleksuk also
chipped in three points on a penalty shot goal and
two assists. UMD outshot the visitor from Hockey East
39-14 on the night and 14-6 in the third period. Junior
All-American center Jack Connolly (two goals and two
assists for a career-high four points) and freshman
right winger J.T. Brown (one goal and three assists)
paced UMD offensively in the rematch while redshirted
freshman netminder Aaron Crandall turned aside 17
of 18 shots to secure his first collegiate win.
Alaska Anchorage came up empty at the Briar Alaska
Gold Rush tournament in Fairbanks, Alaska, dropping

Bailey, Jordan Kwas, Scott Warner and Mitch Bruijsten,

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING: Defenseman Mike
Montgomery, one of six seniors on the 2010-11 Bulldog roster, has been entrusted with team captaincy
responsibilities this year while All-American junior
center Jack Connolly and junior left winger Mike Connolly will serve as alternate captains.
A HOME DEBUT TO REMEMBER: J.T. Brown made quite the
splash in his first-ever collegiate home appearances
and has a WCHA Rookie of the Week award to prove
it. The right winger from Burnsville, Minn., landed the
league honor after picking up his inaugural goal as a
Bulldog in Friday’s 5-3 win over the Friars Friday then
turning in a four-point night the following evening as
UMD completed the sweep with a 7-1 triumph. He
scored once and assisted on three other goals in that
rematch victory and was a plus-4 on the night -- and a
plus-5 on the weekend. The four points Saturday were
the most collected by a Bulldog newcomer since Tim
Stapleton was credited with a goal and three assists
on Feb. 15, 2003 at Michigan Tech University.
SAY GOODNIGHT, DECC: Only three more series, including
the one this weekend with Alaska Anchorage, remain
on the Bulldogs’ DECC docket as UMD will christen
the new $70 million, 6,732 seat AMSOIL Arena on
Dec. 30, 2010 with a U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame clash
against the University of North Dakota. The Bulldogs
have racked up a 454-351-51 record (for a .560 winning percentage) in 856 lifetime outings at the DECC,
its home for the past 45 seasons and are 26-12-3
there since the start of 2008-09.
TERRIFIC TRIO: The high-octane line of senior right
winger Justin Fontaine (3-6=9), junior center Jack
Connolly (3-5=8), and junior left winger Mike Connolly
(3-5=8) have accounted for nine of UMD’s 21 goals
thus far (42.9 percent) and 25 of its 58 points (43.1
percent). Fontaine, who currently shares the WCHA
overall scoring lead with the University of NebraskaOmaha’s Rich Purslow, is the only Bulldog who has
marked in the points column in all four games do date.
SOMETHING’S GOT TO GIVE: The Bulldogs have gotten on
the scoreboard first in only one of their four games to
date while the Alaska Anchorage has still yet to hold
a 1-0 lead at all in 2010-11.
EVEN STEVEN: Of the 14 goals senior left winger Kyle
Schmidt has collected over the past two seasons
(including three in 2010-11), 13 have come in evenstrength situations. No Bulldog has more during that
stretch.
FREE HOCKEY: UMD is unbeaten in 16 of its last 17
games which have required overtime (6-1-10) with
that lone setback being inflicted by Bemidji State
University last winter (5-4 on Jan. 23 at the DECC)
BULLDOG BITS: The 2010-11 season marks the Bulldogs’ 50th year as a member of the NCAA Division I
ranks and their 46th season of WCHA competition ...

final ... Right winger J.T. Brown, who paces all Bulldog
newcomers in points with six (two goals and four
assists), will bring a three-game scoring streak into
Friday night’s engagement against Alaska Anchorage
... UMD, which owned the third most efficient power
play in the country last winter (23.0 percent) after
finishing fourth nationally the previous year in that
department, are currently sixth in that department
among the 12 WCHA schools at 28 percent (sevenof-25). The managed just one power play goal in
seven chances Saturday night against Providence
College ... The Bulldogs haven’t been shut out in the
regular season since dropping a 2-0 decision to North
Dakota on March 1, 2008 in Duluth, but have been
blanked twice since then --- in the WCHA playoffs by
Denver (1-0 on March 15, 2008) and North Dakota
(2-0 on March 15, 2010). Prior to the that 2-0 loss
to the Fighting Sioux last March at the WCHA Final
Five tournament -- which ended the Bulldogs’ season
-- UMD had gone 82 straight games without being
held scoreless ... Junior left winger Mike Connolly is
the only current Bulldog veteran who is averaging a
point a game or better for his career (90 points in 85
outings) although his linemates, Jack Connolly (86 in
87) and Justin Fontaine (115 in 121), are both within
striking distance ... This weekend the Bulldogs will be
looking to do something that no other UMD club has
done in six years -- go unbeaten in the opening six
games of the season. The 2004-05 Bulldogs owned
a 5-0-1 record at that juncture en route to claiming
the No. 1 spot in the uscho.com poll -- the last time
they’ve held that top ranking ... UMD has outscored
the opposition 21-12 thus far and has held the upper hand in shots on goal in each of its four games.
