Hobby turns to passion
Kati Albers completes a 340-mile kayak challenge
By Josh Randt
Sports Editor
ost of us probably don’t
feel like driving 340
miles in three days, let
alone have to physically propel ourselves that distance.
But that is just what Kati Albers, a
2004 graduate from McLeod West,
did when she took part in the Missouri River 340 (MR340).
Now living in South Dakota, Albers decided to take part in the 340mile kayak trip from Kansas City to
St. Charles Mo., in October of 2012,
but her passion for the sport started
about three years prior.
“I first got into kayaking in
2009,” Albers said. “I was just looking for a new hobby and ended up
finding a cheap recreational kayak at
Scheels. I went to a local lake and
just went out for a paddle, and I was
hooked. Kayaking, for me, went
from a hobby to a real passion.”
A hobby that took her outdoors
and allowed her to see nature, is
what she said she was after.
“I started looking for hobbies
where I could be outdoors, and there
was something that drew me to
kayaking,” Albers recalled. “The
amount of wildlife that you can see
from quietly paddling the shoreline
of a lake or river is remarkable.
Whether it is deer coming to the
shore for a drink, or nesting eagles
in cottonwoods, kayaking opens up
a whole new world to the outdoors,
which is what originally drew me to
the sport.”
Once the hobby turned into a passion, she started flirting with the
idea of entering some competitions.
Albers said she spent the winter
M
months of 2013 training in the gym
in preparation for upcoming competitions.
Once the cold dissipated, she took
to open waters for some shorter paddling trips a couple of times a week,
before competing in the South
Dakota Kayak Challenge in May.
The competition was the longest
Albers had ever paddled, and is
what peaked her interest in the
MR340.
“(It) is a 72-mile race on the Missouri River from Yankton, S.D., to
Sioux City, Iowa,” Albers said. “The
challenge was a great learning experience. It showed me that it was possible for myself to complete longer
distance paddles, and that I could
handle tough conditions when presented with them.”
Coach-less, Albers trained with
“local die-hard paddlers” in preparation for the 340-mile trek.
“There was also a lot of reading to
educate myself about the challenges
that the MR340 presents, like the
Missouri heat, sleep deprivation, exhaustion, mental hurdles, etc.,” she
said. “There was also coordination
that took place to figure out stops
with my ground crew. No matter
how much preparation I completed,
I never did feel fully prepared for
the race.”
That feeling, Albers said, never
really subsided until she completed
some warm up circles in the Kansas
River the morning of the event.
Albers said the start of the race
was “nothing like anything I have
experienced before.
“While waiting on the water for
the start, you heard the national anthem, and everyone is quiet,” she re-
called. “Then, there is the musket
fire for the start and everyone starts
cheering, and you see close to 200
solo boats start paddling.”
At that point, Albers said she
started focusing on her goal of hitting the first checkpoint at 50 miles.
“That was how I focused for the
rest of the race,” she said. “One
checkpoint at a time.”
The game plan worked, until day
two of the race.
“I was supposed to complete 118
miles that day and only completed
84 miles,” she said. “I only got
about 45 minutes of sleep the night
before, and I had pushed really hard
the first day. So I think it was a
combination of those two things.”
Fatigued, with sore hands and
feet, Albers admits that she questioned why she took on such a demanding race on that second day.
“Around mid-afternoon I was
continually asking myself, ‘why did
I do this race?’ and that I should just
throw in the towel at the next checkpoint,” she said. “When I got to the
fifth checkpoint, which is one short
of where I was supposed to finish
for the day, I told my ground crew
that I could not push through the
night, and I really needed sleep.”
She took some advice from some
fellow racers, and ate a decent meal
and took a shower.
The checkpoints had port-a-pots
and primitive showers for competitors to use, which Albers said were a
lifesaver.
“As the race goes on and you become more tired, you really do not

Blue Jays are champions of Region 7C
By Josh Randt

Recently crowned the Region 7C
champions, the Plato Blue Jays now
focus their attention to the state tournament after defeating Winsted for
the championship.
The Blue Jays defeated Winsted
10-5 on Sunday behind some clutch
hitting after nearly allowing Winsted’s Tony Kley to throw a no-hitter
against them in Sunday’s first game.
“We made sure that we told Kley
that that bat will be going into the
Plato hall (of fame) because we
broke up a big no-hitter for him,”
manager Adam Dammann said with
a laugh.
“It’s been a while since some
hardware has come back to Plato, so
it’s nice to see that we could do that
this time,” Dammann said in reference to the team’s last region, and
state, championship in 2007.
“We’re going to go into state —
we’re going to take that nice long
week and weekend and have some
fun and continue practicing,”
Dammann said. “We’ll be ready.”
How does it feel to be the region
champs for the first time since
2007?
“It feels great!” Tyler Lang said.
“Especially after last year, since we
were out in two straight games and
nearly got shut out in both of them.”
Plato has a bye the opening
weekend of the state tournament,
and will face either New Prague or
Springfield on Friday, Aug. 23 at 5
p.m. in Delano.

“It was just nice to see Kley on
the mound for so long, because we
haven’t seen a guy that throws hard
like that all year long,” Lang said.
“So that’s just good experience com-
ing into the state tournament. Hopefully it’ll just build our confidence a
little more, because we’re going to
see better pitching from here on
out.”
The final game of the Region 7C
championship picked up where the
previous game left off.
Kley remained on the mound for
Winsted, with Plato giving Adam
Prehn the nod.
Eric Englemann singled to lead
off the second inning for Plato, before Lang belted his second homer
in two days for a 2-0 lead.
Scott Theisen made it 2-1 in the
third, when he scored for Winsted
on a passed ball after getting beaned
by Prehn to get on base.
But Plato responded in the bottom
of the inning, scoring Prehn and Englemann for a 4-1 advantage.
Winsted was looking to make it a
game after Tony Wischnack scored
for Plato in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, the
Wildcats rattled off four-straight
runs with one out to tie the game at
5-5.

Bruins state appearance
22 years in the making

Bryant Nordby hit a walk-off home run against the Waconia Lakers Friday night to give Brownton its first state tournament appearance since 1991.

It’s been a long time coming —
22 years, in fact.
But the Brownton Bruins have
earned a berth in the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Class C tournament,
for the first time since 1991, when
they lost to Wolf Lake in Cannon
Falls.
And the Bruins earned the trip in
a spectacular manner — a walk-off
home run by Bryant Nordby in the
10th inning Friday night broke a 5-5
tie and lifted the Bruins over the
Waconia Lakers, giving the Bruins
their slot in the state tournament
bracket.
“(It) was a real roller coaster
ride,” said Bruins Manager Doug
Schuette of the Friday night game,
which advanced the Bruins and put
Waconia out of the running for a
chance at state.
The ride started right away in the
first inning, when the Bruins scored
two runs when lead-off hitter
Spencer Glaeser got on base on
error, and scored on Ryan Grams’
single. Brad Daak’s sacrifice bunt
advanced Grams, who scored Taylor
Schuette’s base hit.
Then the roller coaster skidded
downhill in the third, when the Bruins allowed three runs on a walk and
four hits to give the Lakers a 3-2
lead. The Lakers added two runs in
the fifth on three hits to boost their
lead to 5-2.
The Bruins crept back into the
game with two runs in the seventh.
Jason Rosenau and Deryk Randt had
back-to-back singles to put two runners on with no outs. Glaeser hit a
single, and a subsequent error allowed Jake Vacek — running for
Rosenau — to score. Grams hit into
a fielder’s choice play that plated
Randt, which cut the Lakers’ lead to
5-4.
The Bruins’ upswing continued in
the eighth, when Taylor Schuette led
off the top of the inning with a solo
home run shot that tied the score at
5-5 with no outs. Then the bottom
fell out again.

It’s not apparent whether
the Glencoe-Silver Lake
boys’ soccer team is a fan of
Three Dog Night, but it can
attest that one is the loneliest
number after a 1-14-3 2012
season.
With another new coach at
the helm, this year’s team
looks to turn some of those
ties into victories.
Jeff Shults takes over for
Cullen Kerslake, who
coached soccer for the first
time last season.
Shults was the head coach
of the boys’ soccer team in
Watertown-Mayer the past
three years.
His last season with the
Royals, Shults’ team compiled an 11-12 overall record,
and lost to Orono in the playoffs.

Girls’ tennis hoping for a surprise season
By Josh Randt

Last year’s Glencoe-Silver Lake varsity tennis team
surprised head coach Robb
DeCorsey by putting themselves in a position to be
the No. 1 team in the section.
“If you would have told
me that at the beginning of
the season last year, I probably would have broke out
hysterically and laughed in
your face,” DeCorsey said.
A big win over Annandale, who was the top team
in the section, gave the Panthers confidence moving
forward.
“Then we hit a little rode
block and kind of fell off a
little bit,” DeCorsey said.
Seeded second in the section, the Panthers defeated
MACCRAY 5-2 in the
opening round of team sections.
But GSL lost to Providence 7-0 in the semi-final
round, ending the team’s
unexpected season.
The main loss from graduation is Mikaeyla Boesche
and Kelly Beneke. Boesche
was a four-time letter win-
ner who played doubles
with Kelly Arnold, now a
senior.
The duo earned all conference awards and made it
to the state tournament, but
eventually lost outside of
the medal rounds.
Arnold now enters her
fifth season of varsity play
and has her sights set on the
state tournament for singles.
“I expect a lot from
Kelly,” DeCorsey said.
“She’s been a big part of
what we’ve had going on
the last four years. She’s
going to have to step up.
She’s a little bit out there on
her own, but it’s going to be
a lot of learning.”
As far as team aspirations, Arnold simply said,
“make it back to sections
and beat Providence.”
Fellow senior Laura
Becker said that this year’s
young team can over
achieve, much like last
year’s team did.
“We were kind of a
young team last year and
we did pretty well, and we
showed our stuff,” Becker
said. “Hopefully, this year,

“We need to come here
and try to improve every
single day,” DeCorsey said.

varsity players, we had
some girls moving around a

this year, those girls will be
able to step up with some
consistency and hold

It’s a major rebuilding year
for the Glencoe-Silver Lake
girls’ soccer team that finished 3-13 last season.
Losing 10 of 11 varsity
starters to graduation, and a
couple that moved out of the
area, this year’s team is “pretty much starting over and rebuilding,” head coach Zach
Otto-Fisher said.
“We knew that was going
to happen,” Otto-Fisher said,
but that does not make the
transition any easier. Especially considering 17 of 19
goals were scored by those 10
players.
A highlight from the 2012
team was the first conference
win in five years, with a 3-0
victory against Hutchinson.
Senior Kaitlyn Cohrs
scored two goals in that
game, but is one of the 10
players lost to graduation.
“It’s going to be tough, but
at the same time it’s going to
be exciting for these girls,”
Otto-Fisher said. “They know
for two or three years they
have to rebuild this program.”
What the team lacks in experience is made up for in
numbers.
The Panthers have about 30
girls on the team, with the
majority coming from seventh, eighth and ninth grades.
“We’re very young,” OttoFisher said. “We’ll have one
senior on the team, two juniors and the rest from there
are underclassmen.”
Wins are always welcome,
but the head coach stressed
that this season is more about
building a program for the future.
“This is my third year here
and we’re still trying to build
the program,” Otto-Fisher

said. “Right now, I’m at a
point where we need to build
our numbers. Every year
we’re getting more and more
girls out, and I think that’s
how we’re building the program.”
One girl the team will rely
on is Yodee Rivera, the lone
senior on this team, and allconference honorable mention from a year ago.
“She’s just a talented, very
mature leader on our team,”
Otto-Fisher said. “She was
the captain last year, so we’re
hoping she steps up.”
After that, the team looks
to the youth for some help.
“This is going to be a
whole new year; everything
is going to be different,” junior Keisha Prafke said.
“We’re expecting a lot to
come from it.”
Prafke said that although
the team lost a lot of people
to graduation, this year ’s
team can still accomplish a
lot.
“I think we’re going to do
well this year,” Prafke said.
“Right now we’re doing well
with conditioning, and the
teamwork is doing great. It’s
phenomenal.”
“I think we can finish higher than last year, too,” sophomore Maddie Kuehn said. “If
we really work at it.”
The Panthers will look to
build a team for the future,
and an integral part of that
will be eighth-grade goalie,
Zoe Christensen.
“We’re kind of building a
team around a goalie, and
you need a good goalie,”
Otto-Fisher said. “She’s
going to be the one for the
next five years, hopefully.”
The Panthers have a scrimmage at Fairmont on Saturday, and open up the regular
season on Thursday, Aug. 22
at Willmar.

Nordby singled to get on

with a double, sending Nordby sprinting for home, where
he was thrown out without

Chris Ross on second base.
Didn’t matter, as it turned

pitcher Chris Bullis took out
the first two Bruins batters

Waconia’s top pitchers, was
quite an accomplishment.”

Matt Schwichtenberg, Rosenau and Randt each had one.
Bullis threw a complete

up four earned runs on 12 hits.
He struck out 11 and walked
none in 92⁄3 innings.
Josh Wendlandt started for
Brownton, giving up four
earned runs on eight hits. He
struck out two and walked
two in 4 1⁄3 innings. Ahlers
earned the win in his 52⁄3-innings’ relief effort, allowing
just one hit as he struck out
two and walked none.
The Bruins celebrated their
first state tournament trip in
21 years a bit after Friday
night’s game, said Doug
Schuette.
“The Bruins have been one
game away from making the
state tournament several
times, over the last 10 years,
so finally making it again is
real special,” Schuette said.
“The guys had some fun after
the game as Wayne Kujas (famous for his mustache) has
promised them for years that
they could shave his mustache
if we qualified for the state
tournament. Well, Wayne had
a new look that night before
leaving the dugout. By the
way, there’s another guy
around town that also lost his
mustache that evening…” said
Schuette, who also has sported a ’stache for years.
The Region 7C tournament
wasn’t over yet for the Bruins,
however, and they played
Green Isle Saturday for seeding rights, losing 10-0 in
seven innings, giving the Irish
the third rank for the state
tournament while Brownton
goes in fourth.
Lucas Sand pitched a great
game for the Irish allowing
just one hit as he struck out
four and walked one.
The Irish had 11 hits off
Brownton pitchers Michael
Hahn, who was tagged with
the loss in a four-inning start,
and relief pitcher Ryan
Grams.
Coming up
The Bruins will play Dumont, from Region 9, Sunday,
Aug. 18, at 5 p.m. at Irish Stadium in Maple Lake.
“At this time, all we know
about Dumont is some general
team statistics,” said Schuette.
“Their record is 21-3, team
batting average is .326, and
their team ERA is 2.60. Their
last state tournament appearance was in 2011 at Brownton-Glencoe-Hutchinson.
They also played in the 1996
state tournament at BrowntonGlencoe.
“In order to advance, it will
take a team effort against Dumont,” Schuette continued.
“Based on their statistics, they
have good pitching and can
hit the ball. Our pitchers will
need to keep their batters off
balance by mixing up their
pitches and staying ahead in
the count. We’ll need to make
plays in the field and not give
up extra bases. We’ll need to
be aggressive at the plate and
execute situations in order to
advance and/or score runners.
If we play like we’re capable
of, I like our chances against
Dumont.
“We’re looking forward to
our game with Dumont on
Sunday,” Schuette concluded.
“Hopefully, we’ll have a good
showing of Bruin supporters!”
— The Bruins have drafted
three players, Michael Patton,
a lefty from Carver who also
was a draftee during the Region 7C tournament; Andrew
Frederiksen, a righthander
from Hamburg; and Bobby
Zellmann, a catcher from Norwood.
— Schuette expects all
three draftees to be at
Wednesday’s practice, at
which time he hopes to have
more information about Dumont and make a decision on
Sunday’s pitcher.
— The Bruins’ Nick Heller
continues to heal from the
broken facial bones he suffered when he was hit by a
pitch in the Aug. 3 game
against Watertown. Schuette
said if Heller gets clearance
from his doctors, the team will
order him a special face guard
so that he can play in the state
tournament.
to different situations within
the game.
The Panthers will have to
pick up on that if they want to
do better than last year’s team,
which Shults said was still a
good team regardless of the
record.
“I think it was still a well
organized team, and a strong
team,” Shults said. “So this
year we will make sure we’re
still strong and competitive,
and we’ll try to win some
games.”
As far as wins and losses
go, the head coach said he is
more concerned with learning
about his players.
“I have no expectations,”
Shults said. “I just expect to
have a good season, and for
everyone to enjoy participation in the program.”
The Panthers have a large
number of sophomores making up this team, which Shults
said is good for rebuilding.
While he has no expectations, Shults said the keys to a
succesful season will come
from teamwork.
“If we play as a team — if I
manage to create on the field
the organization and attitude
that I would like to see, that
will be a success,” he said. “If
the players enjoy the participation and learn, and continue
to develope individually, it’ll
be a success. And if we win
more than one game, that will
be a success as well.”
Gustavo Villalobos thinks
“this should be a good year,”
and that the Panthers could
possibly finish as high as
fourth place in the conference.
He also reiterated his head
coach’s view that any success
this season will be earned
through teamwork.
“We need to play as a team
and pass and talk to each
other, and just have a good
time playing,” Villalobos said.
Another factor for success
will be fresh bodies on the
field.
“We usually had just the
right amount (of players) on
varsity, so we had some JV
players substituting for us,
and we would get tired,” he
said. “Other teams had like
five subs, and subbed every
five minutes, so it was kind of
hard. This year we’re hoping
to get more players and play
full games without getting
tired.”
Villalobos said a lot of last
year’s losses can be attributed
to fatigue from not enough
substitutes.
“It was pretty much every
second half that they beat us,”
he said. “After we got tired,
we only had two subs, and we
had to wait for JV to finish so
they could come and sub for
us.”
This year ’s team begins
competition with a scrimmage
at Fairmont on Saturday. The
regular season begins at home
against Worthington on Aug.

Alumnus talks about
GSL’s class offerings
By Rich Glennie
Editor
Two Glencoe-Silver Lake
students — one a 2011 graduate and the other a future
graduate — spoke to the
School Board Monday night
about programs at the school.
Adam Broderius, a student
at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, returned and spoke
about how his high school
classes helped prepare him
for his classes at UMD in his
major field of engineering.
Kirsten Barott, a sophomore, spoke about the new
program at GSL, the FFA
garden project, that produced
its first fruits of labor at a recent farmers market.
*****
Broderius thanked the
board and staff for the course
offerings at GSL that helped
prepare him for his field of
study.
He said GSL’s math and
science curriculums were all
good. The science classes, he
said, gave him a strong background heading off to college.
Broderius was actively involved in science fair projects
for years that won him state
and national awards.
The GSL science programs
also “did a good job with lab
workbooks,” Broderius said,
something he said he uses a
lot in college.
A physics background from
high school also was useful,
and the great things offered at
GSL were the math — calculus and trigonometry —
courses.
Broderius said he thought
he would never use the
trigonometry courses again,
but “I use them every single
day of my life now.”
He also said the senior
writing class taught him good
writing techniques that he
uses constantly in college as
well.

Adam Broderius

One thing he was not prepared for, Broderius said, was
the large lecture halls with
hundreds of students. “I was
overwhelmed.”
But he said that was good
because facing something
new forced him to “figure it
out.”
Broderius said the district’s
current offerings of the robotics class and supermileage
vehicle program are great,
and he wished they had been
offered when he was in high
school.
Board member Anne Twiss
said she was glad Broderius
came back and offered some
feedback on his high school
classes and how they impacted his college studies.
“It is rare for someone to
come back and tell us,” Twiss
said.
She asked what Broderius
remembers from his elementary school days at Helen
Baker.
“I remember music class,”
Broderius said. He said that
was very helpful for him in
getting over his shyness.
Board member Jamie Alsleben added that it is beneficial to the School Board to
have input from alumni, and
he hoped some more of them
would take the opportunity to
come back and talk in the
classrooms, too.
He said hearing from peers
about the courses and options
at GSL helps current students
in seeing how classes being
taken now “will benefit them
in their new careers.”
*****
Barott said the first year of
the FFA garden program is
starting to produce results.
She said FFA members took
some of the produce to the
Glencoe Farmers Market, and
sold out in minutes.
“That was pretty exciting,”
she told the School Board.
Superintendent Chris Sonju
said the “kids were beaming
with pride,” when they told
him of the sales.
He praised them for their
hard work and success, and
added this is another example
“of all the good things happening at GSL.”
Barott said the money
raised from the FFA garden
will go back into the FFA
chapter. The chapter also will
be doing other fundraisers in
the upcoming school year to
raise money to attend the national FFA convention.
It has not taken long and the walls of the
new Early Childhood Family Education
addition onto Lincoln Junior High are
going up. The addition is onto the northwest corner of the school building and
will house the youngest learners in the
GSL School District. The project is ex-
pected to be completed by the end of the
year. In the meantime, the Early Childhood Family Education and School
Readiness programs will be housed temporarily in two other rooms at Lincoln before moving into the new addition early
next January.
Hutch roundabout open to traffic
The newly constructed
roundabout on Highway 15
south of Hutchinson opened
to traffic on Aug. 10, according to the McLeod County
Highway Department and the
Minnesota Department of
Transportation, about a week
ahead of schedule and just in
time for the McLeod County
Fair.
Crews will continue to
work on the project, resurfacing Highway 15 from the airport entrance to Highway
212, said McLeod County
Highway Engineer John
Brunkhorst.
This work will be done
under traffic. The project is
scheduled to be completed by
early September, Brunkhorst
added.
“Roundabouts are often
used in new or remodeled intersections to lower the inci-
dence of crashes; they show a
39 percent decrease in all
crashes and an 89 percent decrease in fatal crashes,”
Brunkhorst said. “And,
roundabouts can handle high
levels of traffic with less
delay than most stop signs or
signals. The tight curves slow
traffic so entering and exiting
are easier and more efficient.”
Brunkhorst also offered
tips for driving a roundabout:
• Slow down as you approach the roundabout.
• For multi-lane roundabouts, as with any intersection, get into the appropriate
lane as you approach the
roundabout.
• Yield to pedestrians and
bicyclists crossing the roadway.
• Watch for signs or pavement markings that require or
prohibit certain movements.
• When entering a roundabout, yield to vehicles already in the roundabout.
• Do not cross into the
roundabout until all traffic
from the left has cleared.
After entering the roundabout, drive in a counterclockwise direction until you
reach your exit.
• Do not stop, pass or
change lanes within a roundabout.
• If an emergency vehicle
approaches, exit the roundabout immediately and then
pull over.

s the concept of self-help an oxymoron, that is, a contradiction in terms? There is
clearly something oxymoronic about “self-help” books, since they are written by
someone else. A true “self-help” book would be one written to help its author work
through some problem or issue. Perhaps that is a good way to approach our problems, i.e.,
by researching them as if we were going to write a book illustrating how to solve that problem. Self-help may also be contradictory in the same sense in which it is ridiculous to expect people to be able to lift themselves up by their own bootstraps. When you are sinking
in quicksand you need someone on dry land to throw you a rope or reach out to you, in the
same way that you just can’t pull yourself out of many of life’s problems. And lastly, there
is the irony that “self-help” gives us the illusion of independence, when we are in fact dependent on others, and especially on God, from whom our best help often comes. We
should not cut ourselves off from God’s help.

Scout your fields for soybean pests
Be sure to start scouting for
soybean aphids if you have
not already started. There are
a limited amount of fields
that have been found with
higher insect populations at
economic threshold levels.
Soybean aphids do not always reach levels high
enough to warrant treatment,
so it is a good agricultural
practice to only utilize insecticides when treatment is necessary.
The decision to spray or
not spray is always difficult,
but the decision can be determined after scouting soybean
fields for the presence of soybean aphids. Remember that
a neighboring field treated for
pests does not necessarily
warrant treatment on your
field.
Soybean aphids have become a perennial pest for
Minnesota soybean growers
since 2002.
Aphids are small (1/16 inch
or less), and they are typically light green check for
aphids in the soybean canopy.
Signs of aphids include white
skin casts of molting aphids,
honeydew (sap excreted by
aphids), or sooty mold (a
black mold that grows on
honeydew.
One method of quickly estimating soybean aphid populations is to employ “speed
scouting.” This is a method
of estimating aphid numbers
using the presence or absence
of aphids on a plant. Details
on speed scouting are available at http://www.extension.umn.edu/go/1070.
Bruce Potter, integrated
pest management specialist
based at the University of
Minnesota, Southwest Research and Outreach Center,
recently reported on soybean

By Nathan Winter
aphids. Scouting is more time
consuming now. For the most
part, aphids are still concentrated on developing new
growth, but this new growth
and aphids are found increasingly on branches lower in
the canopy.
Potter indicated that the R5
stage of soybeans signals
changes for soybean physiology and aphids both. This is
the beginning seed stage (a
1/8 inch seed is present in a
pod at one of the upper four
nodes).
Soybean root growth and
leaf vegetative growth cease
in mid-R5. Aphids are no
longer consistently found on
the upper leaves. As the soybean plant progresses into
R5, aphids tend to be found
in the middle canopy and
around pods and many aphids
can be small and pale at this
time.
As fields approach 50 percent plants infested with
aphids, they should be moved
up on the scouting priorities
list. As they near 80 percent
of the plants infested, you can
start estimating when the
field will reach 250
aphids/plant. They can be
slowed by weather of natural
enemies. I use two- to threeday doubling times to be on
the safe side.
The 250 aphid/plant economic threshold applies
through R5. Late in the sea-
son, aphid reproduction can
be quite rapid on R6 soybeans. R6 is the full seed
stage where a pod in upper
four nodes has a seed filling
the cavity.
While yield impacts from
aphids are probably less as
soybeans mature, treating increasing populations at 250
through R5 will minimize unexpected surprises in September. Walk away from fields as
leaves begin to senesce or
yellow pods are observed.
How does cool temperature
affect soybean aphids?
University of Minnesota
based research determined
temperature requirements of
the soybean aphid. Soybean
aphids live longer and have a
higher reproductive rate at
cool temperatures, producing
more offspring. Reproductive
rate and generational time are
maximized at temperatures in
the upper 70s and low 80s
with the optimum temperature calculated to be 82° F.
With optimal temperatures
and no natural enemies, laboratory aphid populations can
double in 1-1/2 days. Remember, the temperature
where the aphid is located,
not air temperature, is what is
important. Aphids can move
around the soybean canopy to
find more suitable temperatures.
