Killer
queens
Once upon a time there was an evil queen, but you know
all about her – and have probably seen her in Soho – so
this Halloween we’re going to go one better and look at
queens that kill. Gays may be one of the most peaceloving minorities in the world, but, just like the straights, our
community has had its fair share of twisted minds – and
these guys take it much further than a poisoned apple!
BY DARREN PALFREY
Murderer of Gianni Versace
-Andrew Cunanan
The Kansas Butcher
– Bob Berdella
Now this was a twisted
bitch - Berdella sexually
abused, raped, tortured
and killed at least six gay
men in the late 1980s. He
drugged his victims before
turning them into unwilling sex slaves; he
tied them up, beat them, gave them electric
shocks and put burning chemicals in their
eyes. But with his double chin and awful
moustache, we’re thinking that was the
only way he was ever going to get laid. He
was caught when his final victim managed
to escape, after four days of torture. Police
found remains of those killed in his closet
and buried in his garden.
Muswell Hill Murderer
– Dennis Nielsen
A bit too close to home, these murders
occurred in our own grey city - and this
queen is still alive (albeit serving a whole
life sentence – phew). Nilsen strangled and
drowned 15 young men,
before storing them about
his house, occasionally
having sex with the
corpses. He was
sentenced to life
imprisonment
in 1983 – anyone
want a pen pal?
Cunanan shot and killed four men across
America, with no known motive. And we
could have forgiven a little bit of serial
killing, but Cunanan’s
next move was the
murder of Gianni
Versace. Crimes
against fashion are
unforgivable –
end of! (Beneath
the botox,
Donatella
was deeply
distraught…)
The Milwaukee
Cannibal
– Jeffrey Dahmer
Dharma started early,
committing his first
murder at 18 years
old, but graciously spared the world from
anymore of his bloodshed for nine years.
But then… this sista went on the rampage.
He’d lure men to his house and drug them
before killing them by strangulation. Often
he would sexually molest the corpse
and then eat it – wonder if they’ve got
a category for that on Grindr? He was
caught in 1991, by which time he’d been
committing a murder every week.
The Wolf Man - Michael Lupo
Pogo the Clown - John Wayne Gacy
Lupo, who shares his name with the
Duchess of Cambridge’s cocker
Spaniel, worked in
the YSL boutique on
Brompton Road in
the 1980s. He titled
himself ‘The Wolf
Man’ and boasted
of sleeping with
over 4,000 men –
sounds like a week
on an Atlantis cruise.
But in 1986 Lupo
contracted AIDS and
decided he’d take revenge upon the gay
community, who he blamed. He killed at
least four guys that he’d picked up at bars,
subjecting them to a bloody and violent
death before dumping their bodies.
Gacy, also known to some of his Chicago
neighbours as ‘Pogo the Clown’ (pictured),
appeared to be a generous and charitable
family man, who was even involved in the
Democratic Party – which is odd, ‘cause
serial killing is totally Republican, right? He
killed 33 men in the 1970s, enticing them to
his house, handcuffing
them and then sexually
assaulting them before
strangling them
to death. Gacy
was executed in
1994 – although
Pogo has been
sighted in
Northampton
recently!
He Wrote Off Rasputin - Prince Yusupov
You’ve heard the song yeah, by Boney M? Well, it was
Yusupov who murdered Ra, Ra, Rasputin. He was
apparently sexually obsessed with Rasputin and
assisted with his murder in 1916. But our favourite
thing about Yusupov was that he used to dress up
as a lady and go dancing in the gypsy camps – cut to
Glendora slut dropping around Dale Farm.
More grisly gays…
By no means is that all of them, we’ve yet to tell
you about Kenneth Halliwell, who murdered
his partner in 1967 or Fritz Haarman, who
killed at least 20 men in the 1920s, but we need
to go find ourselves some spooky costumes
for Halloween. Have a great Halloween and be
careful who you bring home at night!

CAPRICORN
Trick or treat? You’re
actually both. By this time
tomorrow, you’ll be in 6”
fuck me high heels and hot
pants, going by your new
name Candi. And you girls
will have a good time, too!
AQUARIUS
Ed Sheeran is a famous
Aquarian. He’s also what
Prince Harry would look like
he had been dropped on his
head at birth. You don’t get
much more scary then that!
Other famous Aquarians
are Rosa Parks and Oprah.
Rosa Parks was arrested for
refusing to give up her seat on
a bus. Oprah doesn’t travel by
bus. #progress
PISCES
Pisceans are famous for their
love of games. Here are four
famous Pisceans: Daniel Craig,
Simon Le Vans, Miss Jason &
Justin Beiber. Now play “Snog,
Marry, Avoid & Kill”.
TAURUS
You will spend Halloween
re-living your birth. You’re
trapped in a tiny, dark 100
degree room full of fluid.
Suddenly, the walls collapse
and you’re squeezed out.
Except this time the Doctor
doesn’t cut the umbilical cord,
he chokes you with it! Enjoy.
GEMINI
Geminis are caring and
generous, which is why I
share my star sign with Kylie,
Titti La Camp, Myra Dubois,
Dave Lynn and Paul O’Grady.
We love life and life loves
us. We’re like a Christmas
hamper full of fabulousness.
And booze. That’s all!
CANCER
Today is your day to stand
out from the crowd. Mostly
because you’ll be tied to a
stake and set on fire like the
witch you are.
ARIES
You will soon come into a
great deal of money. Spend it
wisely. Or not. Doesn’t matter
as you’re about to be skinned
alive by flesh eating zombies.

B 8
VIRGO
Be ready to embrace change.
Loose change. Because you will
soon be homeless and begging
for change due to a horrific
chip pan fire. The good news is
that people will feel sympathy
for you as you will have no
legs and half a face. Happy
Halloween. Beware flat mates
cooking chips.
*
LIBRA
I had to Google Librans. They
seemed to be quiet, single,
repressed boring people.
Then I realised I’d Googled
librarians. To be honest there’s
not much difference. Although
Kim Khardashian is a Libran
and she’s a self-centred hussy.
4
<
SCORPIO
On Halloween you will enjoy
a nice long nap. In the ground.
Forever.
LEO
Leos need attention, respect
and admiration. However,
they tend to get arrogant
and sharing does not come
easily. This last trait is best
illustrated by Rose Garden
with vodka. Madonna with
the limelight. And Whitney
Houston with a crack pipe.
6
SAGITTARIUS
You will have good luck in
romance. In fact, you will get
a love bite on your neck that
will drain your blood and your
entire soul and will turn you
into a vampire. Or the CEO
of British Gas.

JAZZ
SINGER
THE
By Cliff Joannou
Your first two albums are classic
concept albums, themed around
different eras and cities, with
Hollywood and Paris as the focus. Why
did you pick Paris as the subject of
your second album?
We started with a mood board, just
collecting photographs. More and more
of the photos depicted the French style of
fashion – these photographs then made us
realize that Paris was the perfect city to
focus the album around – it all started with
my love for fashion!
And we love your style! What are your
top tips for any virgin Paris visitors?
My best advice to the secret of
understanding the French language is to ask
them to speak slowly… ‘lentement’!
Who are your jazz heroes?
Definitely Nina Simone and Billie Holiday.
Everyone knows the big jazz hits, but
what lesser-known jazz songs are your
favourites?
I love real dramatic lyrics, so ‘Round
Midnight’ and ‘Strange Fruit’ would be my
choices.
What’s been your weirdest experience
of fame to date?
I find fame itself to be the weirdest
experience!
You beat Thriller with the longest run
at Number 1 on the Dutch charts. Did
you have any crazy Michael Jackson
fans telling you off?
Yes I did! There were some Dutch people
at the time who were saying ‘She cannot be
better than Michael Jackson – no way’!
When you pop out to the supermarket
do you go out in the full Miss Emerald
ensemble?
Caro Emerald appears at G-A-Y at
Heaven (Under the Arches, Villiers
Street, Charing Cross, WC2N 6NG) on
Saturday 2nd November, 10pm-5am.
£4 wristband from G-A-Y Bar.
CARO EMERALD scored a huge
No.1 earlier this year with ‘The
Shocking Miss Emerald’, and has
sold millions of albums worldwide
since. She brings her sassy jazz style
to G-A-Y this Saturday...
No way! It takes about two hours to get the
full Miss Emerald ensemble together! I don’t
even wear heels to the supermarket…
Imagine you’re going out partying
– tell us about your ideal night out:
where are you going, who are you
with, what do you drink, where do you
end up?
I love going to festivals in the summer,
and I love those last minute calls from
friends asking you to go out to something
you wouldn’t normally go to… It would
definitely be with a group of friends or a
girlie night out. I would definitely stick to
one type of drink all night so you can stay
out longer, beer would be my choice! I love
meeting strangers and a group of you going
back to their house and just talking, then not
leaving until eight the next morning!
You’re taking some time off as you’re
pregnant. Do you know if it’s a boy
or girl, and if so have you picked out
a name?
I don’t know if it’s a boy or girl. As for
names, I have no clue! Maybe you can
suggest some good ones!
We’re sure Jeremy at G-A-Y will have
some ideas! The press have speculated
about the father. Can you reveal
anything?
No, I can’t reveal anything!
Fair enough. Finally, you play at G-A-Y
next weekend! Gay fans are more
associated with pop music than sexy
jazz… But we think they’re gonna
love Miss Emerald! What are you
planning for the show?
We have created a very specific show
for G-A-Y. A special set list to keep the
energy high and it will end with a bang!
The Shocking Miss Emerald Deluxe
Edition is released on November 4th
on Dramatico/Grand Mono. For more

production at the Putney Arts Theatre promises to be exciting,

familiar sounds of R&B and old school hiphop will be out in full throttle this week.
Nastee and Robski will be laying
down the spooky soundtrack to sink
your teeth into at their ‘Vampire

Although, no offence, we’re
pretty sure there ain’t no

LAST SATURDAY TURNED out to be a slightly more
exceptional than the common, Saturday night fare
at the capital’s gay clubbing mainstay – Heaven. In
continuation of the nightclub’s X Factor season; which
will see a slew of weekend performances from freshly
eliminated contestants in the latest series of the reality
show, Shelley Smith took the main stage... Following an
introduction from former mentor, and First Lady of Rock;
Sharon Osbourne. Yes, Ozzy’s very own emerged from
the wings - in her black satin Tux blazer and with burst
of trademark Chartreuse hair - to champion last week’s
casualty, before Smith’s swansong on the last leg of her
now very much ‘X’ experience!
However, the fate of the night was sealed amongst
the more memorable in Heaven’s grandiose celebrity
appearance Halls of Fame when it was revealed that Lady
Gaga; or pop music’s Mother Supreme for an alarming
amount of the gay community, would be taking to the
stage by Jeremy Joseph (if you’d have heard the screams
of euphoria erupt before he’d even finished his sentence,
you’d understand)! Those same screams shattered the
sound barrier, becoming a roar - and cameras shot up all
over the building - when a very ghoulish looking Gaga
hovered on to the stage in a Jane Austen-esque Empire
dress and shaggy blonde hair; all bare feet, and low
beastly voice. That voice soon became the hit-making
marvel as Gaga launched into her song ‘Venus’
from latest album Art-Pop, in it’s first ever live
performance. With a thunderous, for the floor beat
and haunting harmonies – one had to concede,
fan or not, that the girl had done more than
good. Getting naked before she left the
stage was just that extra bit of Gaga for
everyone gathered to enjoy!

AS WE STRUTTED onto the main
balcony of Café de Paris,
brushing off the various
sequinned drag queens and
muscled pageboys who
threw themselves upon
our person, a sweeping
sea of fabulousness, glee
and glitter greeted our halfhidden eye. Acrobats were
tumbling from satin ropes;
vast Mexican skull designs leered
greenlit from the art-deco pillars, and
everyone – everyone – was dressed to impress,
from Egyptian empresses to half-naked
Venetian princes. All in support of the
National AIDS Trust, organised by
Josh Rafter and friends, we snogged
the face off one of the volunteers
in order to nab the gold VIP
wristband from his backpocket
then settled on the gilded balcony,
swigging a bottle of vodka, to
watch the show: La Voix filled the
ornate venue like Dietrich in the 20s
with her soaring vocals, a sexy metal
welder sent orange sparks fizzing over
the underworld masquerade, and beautifully
bodied go-go dancers writhed to the beats of DJs
Brent Nicholls, Paul Heron and Rob Sykes As a
rippling white sheet swept over the heaving
dance floor, we slid – no, skied - down
the Café de Paris banister to party with
the dead as only the living know
how… Till next

find out a little bit more about her…
3. Is It Gangsta (Yes Yes
Yes) – Giggs (XL Records)
Giggs sounds like he’s come
from hell with a hangover. Is it
gangsta? Yes.
ANGIE…
Tell us a little about Angie
Brown and your music.
When I started out singing, I was
a session singer. So that meant
I could turn up and sing mainly
the chorus’ on various songs.
Fortunately in the 90’s when
‘House/club’ music was massive,
music producers wanted big
voices with tinges of soul and
gospel in it. It’s a very American
sound and has a southern flavour
to it and I found that I could
replicate it just like they did. So
the house music sessions very
quickly came my way. Since then,
I have made a name for myself
and have a following with the
clubbing industry!
What is your connection to
the Kazbar? Why is it special
to you?
I love the Kazbar, I worked for
Craig (the owner) in September,
at his b’day party and I played on
PA for him before that... And I
thought that we really got on well,
and we hit it off that night. Also I
grew up around Clapham, Brixton
and Stockwell, so Clapham High
Street is alive and well within my
memories as a child. I had singing
lessons as a teen in Clapham,
and I learnt to swim at Clapham
Manor Baths.
What can we expect from
your upcoming set? What kind
of crowd do you usually get?
I usually get a great reception for
the crowd that I am playing to,
because I know what clubbers
want, but this night will have a
slightly different flavour, because
we’ll be championing underground
DISCO on our PDF nights, and
it’ll be all new to me I’m afraid,
so I’ll just have to feel it and have
no particular expectations for the
night, except that it’ll be funky
and fun!
And finally, where can we hear
your music for someone who’s
yet to hear the Angie Brown
experience?
You can hear all the releases
whether good or bad under Angie
Brown at iTunes, and you can find
out a lot more about me, if you
visit my website, which is www.
angiebrown.com There are also
loads of various gigs and Pride
events, so a newbie can get familiar
with my style. Hopefully I’ll see
you all down there, for a brilliant
Sunday night out in South London.
Angie Brown will be hosting ‘Pure
Disco Foundation’ at the Kazbar, 50
Clapham High Street, SW4 7UL on
Sunday 3rd November.
Tell us in one juicy sentence
who you are...
I’m a beast, I’m a dog, I’m a
muthaf***in problem. OK, you’re
a goon, but what’s a goon to a
goblin?
What kind of music do you
play?
Anything that hypes the party…
My sets take in X-rated bashment,
slinky RnB, high-nrg afrobeats,
deep vocal house, chest rattling
trap, and more. If it’s got a wicked
vocal and a bass that shakes your
soul I’m on it.
And where can we find you
playing/what can we expect
from next Vibe set?
I play all round London, in Misfits
@ Shadow Lounge, Nookie @
XOYO, and Vibe @ BarCode – my
next set is the Vibe Halloween
special, so in keeping with tradition
I want to do something really
terrifying. Ideally I’d use the power
of my mind to make the walls and
floor spurt fountains of Crystal
flavoured blood, like some ghetto
fabulous Carrie, but in reality I’ll
probably just put on a bit of eye
liner.
Catch DJ Nastee playing at Vibe,
Barcode, Albert Embankment Entrance,
69 Goding Street, Vauxhall, SE11 5AW.
11pm-4am.
4. I Just Wanna Love You
(Thrizzo Twerk Mix) – Jay
Z (white label)
This remix has breathed life
into a classic. Everytime I play
it people go nuts when the
twerk bass drops.
5. I Like Your Girlfriend –
Bryte (white label)
Cheeky Azonto track about
stealing someone else’s
squeeze…
6. Look Right Through (MK
Mix III) – Storm Queen
(Ministry of Sound)
Although this has been floating
around for over a year it’s still
sounding amazing.
7. Boss Ass Bitch - PTFA
(white label)
This has soundtracked about a
zillion Vine videos cos the beat
is so ratchet!
8. Murder/ TKO - Justin
Timberlake (Universal)
Both the new JT songs show
that Timberland and Justin are
incapable of making bad music
together.
9. Big People Ting –
Konshens (Tj Records)
Old skool flavoured dancehall
that sets the rave on fire.
10. RDX – Kotch
I can’t get away from this song.
I’ve been playing it all year and
it still blows my mind book.

PIZZAZZ
Screw shopping and coffee catch-ups with your gal pals! The original afterhours party monster Trade is back this weekend with a truly genre-busting
Saturday afternoon session across four rooms, each with a distinct sound
policy. Last week we previewed ‘Trade Modern’ and ‘Trade Lite’. This week,

TRADE DISCO - TRADE
SPRING
What did TRADE
mean to you at the
beginning, and what
does it mean to you
now?
At the beginning it simply
blew my mind. If I think
about it now, it represents a time and a place where I made some
absolutely fantastic, special and long lasting friendships. It’s also quite
amazing - and very nerve wracking - to be contemplating actually
playing at Trade!
How would you describe your most incredible night as a
clubber at Trade?
For the sheer bewildering amazement, it has to be the first time.
I’d been at Heavenly Social which was
also at Turnmills on the Saturday night
and persuaded Tom Fuller to let me slip
in the side door as the venue was turning

Turnmills countless times, but once I saw
East Anglia it as Trade… well, I’d literally never seen

anything like it.

GONZALO
TRADE HARD TRADE WINTER
What did Trade
mean to you at
the beginning
and what does it
mean to you now?
Trade meant for me everything any
clubber, DJ and producer could ask for.
It was the best club in the world for me
as a clubber, so my dream came true
when I became a resident. It was a way
of life that inspired me and influenced me
artistically for all these past years and
even nowadays.
How would you describe your most
incredible night as a clubber there?
There has been so many great
unforgettable nights, but one that stands
out was when I did the Test Lounge on
May Bank Holiday circa ‘98. Also doing
the Test Lounge on that night was Lisa
German and Rob Sykes! So I got to dance
all night as well as DJing the last set in the
back room. I became a resident after that
night, so it was very special.
Why do you think it has stood the
test of time?
Probably because Trade is more than
just a club. It was a way of life for many
clubbers and a true pioneer for the Hard
House and underground scene of the 90’s
and the new millennium. That has been
reflected in the personality and durability
of the brand throughout the years.

TRADING
PLACES
Trade is back with another immense birthday party across
four rooms this weekend. And to help pull the whole shebang
together owner Laurence Malice has brought DJ Steven
Sharp on board to help take the brand to new heights…
How did your new
promoter role come
about?
It’s been such a weird
year in my career. I left
Orange Nation in January,
started writing for a
magazine in the Spring,
and from that interviewed
Wayne Shires who asked
me to become the Head
of PR for his ‘Summer
Rites’ festival. That led
me to managing the Main
Dance tent at the event,
where I worked with
Laurence Malice who
has remained a friend
since working together all those years ago - he offered me the
promoter role and I accepted!
What is your earliest Trade memory?
In the early days, just getting into the party was the thing to
achieve! Funnily enough, I remember the first door person to
let me in, one rainy Sunday morning in Clerkenwell was indeed
[artist] Trademark who became and has remained a friend ever
since. I can’t tell you about the immense positive feedback to his
artwork for the birthday! He is an incredible talent. We will be
selling Limited Edition T-shirts of the design at the event. I think
the world of him.
What are you most excited about moving Trade to Egg
London?
The venue is looking so incredible. Laurence, Andrew, Spencer,
Wyn and the team have made a forward thinking venue into
something even more special. I have plans to make each room
unique in décor. We won’t let you down.
Which DJ set are you most looking forward to?
Such a hard question as I’ve booked everyone personally and I
can’t wait to hear so many! But my diamond mate in all things that
influenced me as a DJ behind the decks is Malcolm Duffy.
What’s ahead for Trade?
I am planning a brand new tour entitled ‘Tomorrow & Forever’.
We are going to Paris, Dublin and Cape Town [NYE] before
the end of 2013 and there are lots of bookings planned
for 2014! There will be Trade parties in London every 6-8
weeks I assure you all!
What is your ultimate Trade anthem?
As it has always been and even after all this time Gat Décor’s
‘Passion’. When Malcolm played this track it really did seem to
signal that Trade had started. I am in the process of setting up
a new digital Trade label with Laurence, which will have a Trade
Classic subsidiary. So, you never know, it could become part of
our new catalogue!

STUDDING HOT!
A new night is hitting East London this week that
promises to give a whole lotta hotties and a whole
load of hotness to the sexy gay men of the capital.
Get ready for ‘The Stud’! We caught up with the
guys behind the night to tell us more what to expect…
What’s the idea behind The Stud?
We have style, image and quality, coupled
with a fresh and unique point of view.
“STUD” channels the modern man coupled
by a unique sound of Nu-Disco, 21st
century dance music of the 70s and 80s and
some great re-edits of original-era disco
music, followed by some deep ambient
concentrated melodies. Smooth, and
stylish with a comfortable relaxing sound,
Stud London will be a night for all to enjoy!
We also have La Pequeña hosting!
Tell us about the your new venue
“Nomad Club”…
Nomad Club is in the Heart of The East
London Gay area 5 mins walk from Old
Street Tube Situated over 2 floors, with a
contemporary décor on the ground floor
giving it a ‘lounge feel’ with upstairs being
the ‘main room disco’. Both floors have a
brand new Martin Audio system installed,
which delivers clean crisp tops, punchy mids,
and a warm bass that wraps itself around
you. And best of all, the venue is fully air
conditioned! Special drinks promotions are
available on the night.
DJ Christopher Camplin’s TOP 3 ‘STUD’ Tracks
1 - Groove Patrol - Need Your Love (Original Mix) 1993
This is a classic track I remember my sister playing as a child, one of my earliest memories of
House music and still sounds fresh, getting the dance floor moving twenty years later.
2 - Max Graef & Andy Hart - Jungle (Original Mix) HEIST002
This is my favourite release from this year, I did hear it first on Detroit Swindle’s Boilerroom Set
and I instantly knew I needed to find it, I’ve played it a few times and the dance floor goes crazy.
3 - Fingers Inc - Can You Feel It For Me
This is up there as one of the greatest house records, another one that has stood the test of time
originally released in the mid 80s. Larry Heard is a legend, square driving baseline with Martin
Luther King samples, and it never fails.

Naked Nightmares
G-A-Y owner Jeremy Joseph and Porn Idol judges Michael Mitchell, Baga Chipz
and Tanya Hyde share their top tips for success at the weekly amateur strip contest,
and their personal worst Halloween memories…
Michael ‘Bitch-all’ Witch-ell
(Body) Baga Chipz
1. Just be yourself.
2. When your naked on stage don’t
bend over showing your chocolate
starfish to the audience!
3. If you’re ugly make put loads of
make-up on so we can’t see your face,
please.
1. Shave thart bush! It’s not a
pretty sight when you look
like you’re giving birth to
cousin IT from the Addams
Family.
2. I know it’s Halloween
and its an excuse to get
the blood out, but girls if
you’re gonna enter G-A-Y
Porn Idol do it when your
not on the blob. It looks
like a little mouse has
crawled up ya tuppence!
3. How to win? Flirt with
me, grope me, tell me
how beautiful and elegant
I look, and that after the
show you’re gonna smash
me back door in and take
me on a dirty weekend
to Butlin’s with the cash
prize.
Most Horrible Halloween
My worst Halloween experience
was when I was 17 and working at
Disneyland Paris I hooked up with a guy
dressed as a zombie. After we did it.
we showered and both washed off our
makeup and I discovered that I shagged
my friends boyfriend I was horrified
Jeremy ‘Jeepers Creepers’
Joseph
1. You’re going to be stripping on
Halloween, so get ready to be a
‘Thriller’! No nightmares please!
2. It doesn’t matter what you look
like on Halloween! If you’re a
minger, disguise it with a Halloween
outfit. I won’t be wearing one as
anyone who has slept with me will
know it’s scary enough as it is.
3. If it’s small, disguise it with a
maggot. If you haven’t trimmed,
disguise it as a cobweb.
Most Horrible Halloween
I came ‘out’ at a Halloween party to
a guy who I thought was absolutely
stunning. I told him I was gay.
Unfortunately I came ‘out’ for
no reason because he just wasn’t
interested. What a bitch! And there
was me hoping I could lose my
virginity on Halloween…
Most Horrible Halloween
Due to me being elegant,
classy and the spitting image
of her I thought I would go
out as Princess Di. I looked
stunning, until I had to walk
past a school in Birmingham
at 8.30am in the morning
pissed as a fart with makeup all down me face. People
were shouting Myra Hindley!
Tanya (Jekyll and) Hyde
1. Be able to dance. Some people look like they are having electric shock treatment.
2. Have a wash. You can come dressed as a corpse for Halloween but don’t smell like one.
3. Don’t take on the coven. Some contestants get cocky with the judges, be warned for
one night only we can be even more evil! [Cackles]
Most Horrible Halloween
One year I was wearing one of those all in one fishnet body stockings. Before I went on
stage, I was out having a smoke and I caught myself on a nail. So, I was slowly unraveling
down to my bra and knickers. I still have the outfit but now it resembles Gollum’s loin cloth.

calendar, gay rugby team the KING’S CROSS STEELERS
sent hench TOM WHITTAKER to talk to us both about
the sport and what to expect on the night…
Sandra
Tell us about the King’s Cross Steelers.
How long have you guys been going for?
Can anyone join?
I found out about ‘the Steelers’ (as we’re
known) when I moved to London, I wanted
to play rugby but as I had recently come
out I wanted to have the camaraderie I had
experienced at other rugby clubs while knowing
that it wouldn’t matter that I’m gay. The
Steelers were the first gay and inclusive rugby
club in the world when the club was established
back in 1995, and has been going strong for 18
years. We accept all players, no matter how you
identify your sexuality, and all levels of ability.
We also have a huge supporter base, so there
are loads of ways you can get involved if you
don’t feel that you want to take part in a game.
Great pics! What is this new calendar
about? Are you supporting a charity?
Cheers, we’re thrilled with the way it turned
out. The purpose of the calendar is to fundraise
for the club to help us represent London in the
2014 Bingham Cup. The tournament comprises
of gay rugby clubs from around the globe, and is
the biggest non-professional rugby tournament
in the world. It was held in Manchester last
year, and is in Sydney next year, so needless
to say we have a huge fundraising target to
ensure we get a strong team over to Oz,
and bring the Bingham Cup to London!
The calendar is just one element of our
fundraising efforts, so I’d encourage QX
readers to like our Facebook page (Official
Kings Cross Steelers RFC) to keep updated
with our latest fundraising shenanigans.
What can we expect from the launch at
Two Brewers? Any gratuitous nudity on
behalf of the players? (We’re hoping!)
Haha, well that would be telling now wouldn’t
it? The Two Brewers always put on a good
show for us and we’re so pleased to have them
sponsor a page in our calendar. There’s a great
line-up of acts in the form of Miss Jason, La
Voix and Sandra. Needless to say, it will be
impossible to control them, so if you want to
find out what happens and exactly what level of
gratuitous nudity will be involved…You’ll have
to come down and check it out!
How do people get involved with King’s
Cross Steelers if they want to get into the
sport of rugby?
Great question, the fantastic thing about
the club is that we cater to all abilities. Our
1sts team offers highly competitive rugby in
the Essex 2 league, through to our development
squad which is aimed at those who are rusty
or have never touched a rugby ball in their life.
Because we have teams at different levels, you
can go at whatever pace you want. As I said
before, it’s not just about playing, supporters
play a vital role in keeping the club running and
raising the players spirits from the sidelines. If
you want to get involved just send us an e-mail
at [email protected], message us on
our Facebook page, or even better… Pop to a
game to meet the guys and we can answer any
questions on the spot.
And finally, which rugby players would be
in your personal favourite nude calendar?!
Oh that’s easy, all the rugby players in our
amazing calendar of course!
The King’s Cross Steelers calendar launch will be at
The Two Brewers, 114 Clapham High Street, SW4
7UJ on Sunday 3rd November, from 5pm onwards,

KU BAR
26/10/13
30 LISLE STREET, CHINATOWN, WC2H 7BA
WORDS AND PHOTOS BY CHRIS JEPSON
WITH HALLOWEEN
turning into a week long
‘celebration’ now, Ku Bar
got in to the spooky spirit
across all their venues
at the weekend as they
transformed the bars
in to a web festooned
crypt complete with a
cast of living dead bar boys.
While they definitely gave us
the shivers with Michael Knight’s
fab make-up job, they were still shirtless and super
hot so we could easily overlook the
fact half their faces were falling
off! Let’s face it, we’ve done
worse. Music and visuals
came from the brilliant
VJ Thanos and there
were even some sexy
leathered-up zombie
customers – never
a string of words I
thought I’d ever use!
Horror and hotties, the
perfect combination, and
thanks to Halloween falling
mid week, if you missed out at
the weekend we can do it all again
down at Ku Bar on Thursday 31st!

50 RUPERT STREET, SOHO, W1D 6DR
WORDS BY TOM REDKIDD
PHOTOS BY JOEL RYDER
RUPERT STREET kicked
off the first in a series
celebrating our fav trick,
Trade. Duty mgr Brian
Hoolichan and crew had
a chilled out crowd of
suits and boots mixing
it up amid the clink of
cocktail glasses and slick
grooves by DJs Steven and
George aka the Sharp Boys.
Rupert Street has long been a
workin’ man’s best mate serving up
pints of relief after a post-coital work week. “I always
come here,” says Paul Watson, from Vauxhall. “It’s so
laid back, friendly and the drinks are amazing!”
That they are. From a hefty menu of tantalizing
elixers, Brian whipped up a Porn Star martini in record
time, a perfect match with the fresh vibes from the
Sharp Boys. Steve and George Sharp agree, “We hit it
off with the whole team. It’s a great launch pad, truly
inspiring, unpretentious crowd and they’ve
done wonders with the place.”
After a quick nip’n’tuck, Rupert
Street has re-claimed her Soho
corner, looking and sounding
fresher than ever. It’s what
keeps 8-year regulars,
Louis Laney and Jai Logan,
coming back every week:
“Feels clubby-- without
the attitude.”
Well put, fellas.

Happy
Halloqueen!
WELL IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN, campers, when usually sane
adults up and down the country throw caution to the wind and dress up as their
favourite dead person/mass murderer/fictional monster - all whilst necking as many
Jägerbombs and taking dozens of heavily filtered Instagram selfies. But what of the
dedicated cabaret queens of the scene, who spend the whole year dressed
up to the nines. What macabre monstrosities do they like to go as for
Halloween? And what gags do they like to throw into the mix at this
supposedly fiendish time of year? We’re just so damn curious here at QX.
So you know what we did? We only went and asked them...
n Reid
by Jaso
HOLESTAR
MARTHA D’ARTHUR
‘To be honest, I’m not a fan of Halloween.
Many drag dolls call it a tranny Christmas
but it should be a day of rest for us. We
spend the whole year dressing up and
entertaining the nation in all variations of
ghoulish and ghastly drag. Let the hoi polloi
have their fun looking scary for a change
while we soak our bunions, watch a trashy
horror film and cackle at children.’
‘What did Dr. Frankenstein get when he
put the brain of a goldfish
in the body of a dog?’
Don’t know, but
whatever it is, it’s great at
chasing submarines!’
MRS. MOORE
‘I love that I get to freak people out
at Halloween, wearing my really
big back-combed hair and false
teeth all night. My most memorable
Halloween, though, was last year,
when I played Buffalo Jill in Silence of
the Lambs, with the Drama Queens. I
was onstage nude! All in the name of
art of course. And if all else fails, I just
dress up as Lola Lasagne! [laughs]
LADY LA RUE
JOHN SIZZLE
‘I love wearing my
Halloween cat outfit.
It has six tits and a
realistic arsehole
that I can lick when
the need arises. I’m
always fun to have at
any Halloween party.’
‘Last Halloween, I
wanted to go and
see a really scary
movie so I took Dave
Lynn to see a special
showing of ‘The
Mummy’. It was a long
night - she was signing
autographs for three
hours afterwards.’
ROSE GARDEN
‘Halloween has always been huge in
Northern Ireland and growing up I always
looked forward to it so I could dress up.
Go figure?! Back then, I loved dressing as
a witch, mummy or a fairy. Now that I’m
older I tend to go for the physco-bitchfrom-hell look, all blood and smudged lips
- a la Carrie. The scariest thing is that it
suits me so well! [laughs]
A MAN TO PET
MYRA DUBOIS
‘Why did the
skeleton cross the
road?’
To catch the bone
collector...’
‘Did you hear about
the two gay ghosts?’
They put the willies
up each other.
(BOOM BOOM!)’
THE BEAR DID LADY
‘I’m glad it’s Halloween - all
the cobwebs in my flat
look like decorations. This
year I’ll be wearing a
T-shirt with ‘Life’ written
on it, and I’ll be handing
out lemons to strangers.’

GAY BINGO – 10TH ANNIVERSARY EXTRAVAGANZA
The Hackney Empire, 291 Mare Street, E8 1EJ
ART
- noun
[mass noun] The expression or
application of human creative
skill and imagination, typically in
a visual form such as painting or
sculpture, producing works to be
appreciated primarily for their
beauty or emotional power.
Works produced by
human creative skill and
imagination.
CAN A GAME OF BINGO
really be a work of art? It can
when Jonny Woo adds his
superlative touch to it.
Generally regarded as the
pastime of old ladies with blue
rinses it was only ever a matter of
time before one of cabaret’s most
ingenious minds was to transform
its already camp characteristics
(“two fat ladies 88”, “legs eleven”,
et al) into a genuinely theatrical
affair. And so, Gay Bingo was born
when the trio of John Sizzle, Ma
Butcher and Woo delivered a run
of events that would culminate,
ten years later, into one almighty
addendum to a decade of deranged
antics and performance art.
Taking over the imposing
Hackney Empire, Gay Bingo was a
roller coaster variety performance,
incorporating opera (Le Gateau
Chocolat’s resounding vocal
prowess) and new compositions
(Jonny Woo’s hugely personal
‘Can’t Get The Glitter Out Of
The Groove’) to reinterpretations
of pop numbers and classic disco
from Ma Butcher and John Sizzle.
The legendary Lavinia Co-op, and
contemporary stars Legs & Coq,
Holestar and Jacqui Potato all gave
their time and talent.
The powerful ending was totally
unexpected, throwing a sobering
thought to the glitter and glitz that
preceded it. The stage fell into

who’s shocked when
his visa isn’t renewed.
To stay in America,
he marries his best pal (The Sopranos’ Jamie-Lynn Sigler), which is

makes her that much more
endearing.
