Providing Help. Creating Hope.
Dear Friends of
Catholic Charities:
Despite
unprecedented
financial challenges
over the past
year, I am pleased Steven Roach
Executive Director,
to report that
Catholic Charities
Catholic Charities
of the Diocese
of Springfield
in the Diocese of
in Illinois
Springfield in Illinois
has maintained
its longstanding and dedicated
mission of serving the poor and
suffering in our midst. While
our overall operating budget
has decreased, the number of
people we serve on a daily basis
continues to be astounding.
In fact, the number of clients
who were served in our foster
care and adoption programs
represented only a small fraction
of the total number of people
Catholic Charities serves on an
annual basis.

It is important to remember that
Catholic Charities still provides
food to tens of thousands of
children and families through
our seven food pantries across
the diocese, the St. John’s
Breadline and our Meals on
Wheels program. Catholic
Charities still provides medical
and dental services to thousands
of children and families through
the St. Clare’s Health Clinic.
Catholic Charities still provides
millions of dollars’ worth of lifesaving medication through our
MedAssist program. Catholic
Charities still provides housing,
guardianship, advocacy and
wellness programs for hundreds
of needy seniors through our
St. Anne Residence, Elderly
Guardianship, Eldercare Options
and Faith In Action programs.
Catholic Charities still
provides housing, treatment
and education for hundreds of
at-risk youth through our Intact
Family Services program and
the Catholic Children’s Home.
Catholic Charities still provides
quality mental health services
for hundreds of children and
families through our Professional
Counseling Solutions program.
And Catholic Charities still helps
over 20,000 people every year
through our crisis assistance
programs by keeping utilities on
and families from being put out
on the street.
These critical programs and
services are delivered through
our area offices and facilities
located in Quincy, Beardstown,
Springfield, Decatur, Mattoon,
Effingham, Carlinville, Alton and
Granite City; all of which remain
open for business. In addition,
our rural outreach programs bring
services to many more people
located in dozens of small towns
and communities throughout the
Springfield Diocese.
Catholic Charities is supremely
dedicated to remaining a lifeline
to so many people in need. We
have been greatly encouraged
by the love and support that so
many of you have shown us
during this transition period.
We recognize that without it,
we cannot fulfill our mission of
love and the directive to care
for the least of our brothers and
sisters that was given to us by our
Savior, Jesus Christ. Please share
your time, talent and treasure to
support the ministry of Catholic
Charities in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Steven E. Roach, M.S.

Dear Friends in Christ,
For almost 90 years,
Catholic Charities
has reached out with
the heart and hands
of Christ to serve the
“least of our brothers
and sisters” in the
Most Rev.
Springfield Diocese.

President,

Jesus.” Catholic Charities Board of Directors
embodies the corporal
works of mercy by providing programs that
support the young and old, those who are
hungry or sick and those who have been
abused or abandoned.
This past year, Catholic Charities
continued to serve thousands of children
and families in need despite transitioning
to an agency that has become significantly
less reliant on government revenue. While
this transition has been very difficult, it was
made possible through the generosity of
donors and by the tremendous dedication
and selflessness of Catholic Charities’ staff,
board members and volunteers. Despite
significant financial obstacles, all Catholic
Charities regional offices throughout the
diocese have remained open and are
serving the poor and suffering in our midst
on a daily basis.
Our local Catholic Charities offices
would not be able to perform these
ministries or respond to these needs
without your financial assistance. If you
have not taken an opportunity to donate
to Catholic Charities, please prayerfully
consider doing so. The Mission of Catholic
Charities to address the needs of today’s
families and to provide hope to the most
vulnerable people in our diocese needs
your support.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Thomas J. Paprocki
Bishop of Springfield in Illinois

A volunteer with the Madison

recognition for her work with older

Foundation
Catholic Charities in Springfield was one of 12 agencies
nationwide to be awarded a $78,000 grant from the WalMart Foundation to help end hunger in rural areas of the
Springfield diocese. The funds will go towards purchasing
two refrigerated trucks to be used as mobile food pantries.
“We are honored to be one of only a dozen Catholic
Charities agencies across the country to receive this grant,”
said Catholic Charities Executive Director Steven Roach. “We
have struggled for years to address the issue of rural hunger
in our diocese, and a mobile pantry is a real opportunity to
reach out to those who cannot access services at our regional
offices.”
The Madison County Catholic Charities and Effingham
Catholic Charities offices have each purchased a new vehicle
“We hope that people who check
out our Facebook page maybe just out
of curiosity will find that it tells some
compelling stories of what our agency
does for the communities we serve,” said
Meredith Curtin, Facebook administrator. “The goal is that
those people will ‘like’ our page, and will share our information with others.”
In addition to providing information on its own events the
Catholic Charities Facebook posts links to news clips, articles
and details on other area events that could be helpful to its
friends.
“Facebook has more than a billion users,” said Curtin.
“It has the potential to bring people together with Catholic
Charities – and ultimately to connect with those who most
need our help,” she said.

Our staff serves the nutritional needs of families by helping with immediate
problems and searching for future solutions. Donations of food, time and
money are necessary in order to respond to local hunger.
Advocates assist eligible clients with chronic health conditions in obtaining
maintenance medicines free of charge from major pharmaceutical companies. Many clients have no health or prescription coverage.
Referral Services
Catholic Charities is part of a close-knit network of agencies in each community. We are knowledgeable of other agencies’ services and refer people for
help when we are unable to assist with a particular need.
Resale Stores
Our stores are ideal places to find gently worn clothing, housewares and
furniture at nominal costs, and much is given away free. Volunteers and
community donations help keep our stores going strong.
St. Clare’s Health Clinic
Preventative and basic health care is provided to families in Springfield who
could not otherwise afford it. Includes physicals, dental services, vision
exams and glasses, and hearing and vision screenings.
St. John’s Breadline
Eldercare Options
We assess, counsel and determine the need for guardianship for senior adults
who no longer have the ability to make sound judgments. Staff strive to find
alternatives to guardianship as well as secure legal decision makers for disabled
adults.
Elderly Guardianship
We assume the role of Guardian for Seniors who lack decisional capacity concerning their health, well being and safety. Staff provide 24 hour case management, decision making and advocacy for these individuals.
