The event held from 3rd to 16th June was aimed to promote the exquisite traditional Malay textile art of ‘Songket’, ‘Tenun’ and ‘Tekat’. Among the displays were contemporary Songket pieces made by the weavers of Yayasan Tuanku Nur Zahirah and Tekat crafts produced by Yayasan Sultan Azlan Shah and Mariwasa Kraftangan. SOMEWHERE in the coastal town of Paignton, a small garden of Malaysian plants is flourishing, thanks to Tourism Malaysia which donated most of the award-winning Malaysian Garden at the recent Chelsea Flower Show 2011 to Paignton Zoo. Paignton Zoo is a botanical and zoological garden, and also a registered charity. It is the ideal recipient of the majority of plants used in this year's Chelsea Flower Show. The plants from the garden, designed by James Wong and David Cubero of Amphibian Designs (who also designed last year's award-winning tropical garden), are scattered around the zoo which also houses some orangutans, Sumatran tigers and crocodiles. According to zoo executive director Simon Tonge, the plants are as important as the animals in the zoo. "The visitors, of course, want to come and see the animals, but they will want to come and see them in the right context. "There are some plants scattered in the crocodile greenhouse with high ceilings, and very high temperature and high humidity. "The plants have interesting shapes, adding a visual texture to visitors' perception of us and the habitat they go in to. "So, the plants are structurally useful and important, and we use them to set of the animals against them." "They did not just end there at the Chelsea Flower Show. In her message, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said "We are extremely pleased that the spirit of our Malaysia Garden will live on at Paignton Zoo. "It is a privilege that we are able to share our Malaysian plants with visitors to this British institution. "We look forward to a long and fortuitous relationship with Paignton Zoo.
