SOMEWHERE in the coastal town of Paignton, a small garden of
Malaysian plants is flourishing, thanks to Tourism Malaysia which
donated most of the award-winning Malaysian Garden at the recent
Chelsea Flower Show 2011 to Paignton Zoo. Paignton Zoo is a
botanical and zoological garden, and also a registered charity. It is
the ideal recipient of the majority of plants used in this year's
Chelsea Flower Show. The plants from the garden, designed by
James Wong and David Cubero of Amphibian Designs (who also designed last year's award-winning tropical garden), are scattered
around the zoo which also houses some orangutans, Sumatran
tigers and crocodiles.
According to zoo executive director Simon Tonge, the plants
are as important as the animals in the zoo. "The visitors, of course,
want to come and see the animals, but they will want to come and
see them in the right context. "There are some plants scattered in
the crocodile greenhouse with high ceilings, and very high
temperature and high humidity. "The plants have interesting
shapes, adding a visual texture to visitors' perception of us and the
habitat they go in to. "So, the plants are structurally useful and
important, and we use them to set of the animals against them."

Wan Abdullah planted a tree at the zoo, witnessed by Tonge and Torbay Council chairman, Councillor Derek Mills. Tourism
Malaysia director for UK and Ireland, Abdul Rauf Abu Hassan, said the choice of Paignton Zoo to house the plants was important as it ensured continuity to the plants. "They did not just end there at the Chelsea Flower Show. In her message,
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said "We are extremely pleased that the spirit of our Malaysia Garden will live
on at Paignton Zoo. "It is a privilege that we are able to share our Malaysian plants with visitors to this British institution.
"We look forward to a long and fortuitous relationship with Paignton Zoo. It is a worthy beneficiary of our gift and in keeping with our long-term commitment to parks, gardens, nature and wildlife." - www.nst.com.my

LONDON JUNE 16: Gary Rhodes has
been announced as Malaysia
Kitchen’s ambassador at Taste
London 2011. He will participate in
the ongoing campaign to inform the
British public about the unparalleled
multi-cultural world of Malaysian
cuisine and the unique potential of
Malaysian food products. Celebrity
chef, restaurateur, and author, Gary
Rhodes is renowned for his
reinvention of classic dishes without
sacrificing culinary authenticity and
excellence. This has led to him
being coined by his peers as truly
'The Chef's Chef'. Taste London
2011 at Regent’s Park will be Gary's
first appearance as Malaysia
Kitchen's ambassador.
Gary said: "I'm really excited to have been invited by Malaysia Kitchen to be part of
their campaign. Malaysian cuisine deserves to be much more widely appreciated in the UK.
With such a rich heritage of flavours and combinations of ingredients, Malaysian products will
unlock the potential for unlimited experimentation by home grown British cooks. I want to
inspire more people to explore this world of taste and help spice up their home cooking."
Mr Raja Badrulnizam Raja Kamalzaman Trade Commissioner for MATRADE
(the Malaysian Trade Commission) said: "Malaysian cuisine is a multi-layered complexity of
ethnic styles and a cultural melting pot of cooking techniques. By bringing Gary Rhodes
onboard we will achieve even greater awareness of everything it can offer to British foodies.
"What sets Malaysian dishes apart, and what the Malaysia Kitchen is working to establish in
the mind of the UK consumer, is the absolute authenticity of ingredients and influences that
contribute to the cuisine's rich and varied heritage. With Gary - well known for his skill and
enthusiasm for reinterpreting traditional dishes - as our culinary ambassador, we will be
reaching out and encouraging consumers to explore the unlimited potential of unique
Malaysian ingredients to spice up their own cooking."
