Burn calories while sitting on the couch:
Slim with coffee!
Mona Grudt controls her weight:
Increase the metabolism
Choose the right brand
Strengthen your immune system
Healthy and slim with coffee!
The Norwegian population consumes 45 thousand tonnes of coffee during one year. Model Mona Grudt
is a dedicated coffee drinker – and has three cups every day to keep her weight steady. Coffee is also
our best source of anti oxidants!
I have been fond of coffee for a long time and have a cup every now and then. After I discovered a coffee
with a slendering effect I have also used it to control my weight, Mona Grudt says. She is not the only one
who drinks coffee to loose weight or gain other health promoting effects.
Three a day
Norwegian studies have shown that coffee has a beneficial effect on the liver function and that three cups of
coffee every day almost halves the risk of developing cirrhosis of the liver.
- It does not really matter what type of coffee you drink because all brands possess the same beneficial
effect to your health. One should, however, divide between milk-based coffee beverages and the rest due of
the amount of calories, Marit Lysnes in Norsk Kaffe Informasjon (Norwegian Coffee Information) says.
According to Professor Rune Blomhof in the Department for Nutritional Sciences at the University in Oslo,
over 60 per cent of the anti oxidants we absorb from the Norwegian diet comes from drinking coffee. One can
drink up to 5 cups of coffee every day, but if the consumption gets too high, the beneficial effects of the
coffee seems to be lost, he says to the website forskning.no. Anti oxidants appear to play an important part in
relation to several serious diseases. The study Blomhof refers to included 27 000 elderly women who were
monitored over a period of 15 years. The coffee proved to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular
diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, several pulmonary diseases, kidney diseases, arthritis and Parkinson’s
disease with 20-25 percent.
DRINKS SLENDERING COFFEE: Mona Grudt has two-three cups of slendering coffee every day and feels that it helps
her to keep the weight down.
Mona’s favourite
There are several types of slendering coffee on the Norwegian market, but Mona prefers CoffeeSlender. This
brand is really a food supplement and contains an extract called Svetol in addition to the coffee. Svetol is said
to keep the body from storing fat.
- I have a cup with my meal and by doing so I feel that I can spoil myself with sauces or other treats every
now and then. Since I do what I do, my appearance is everything and that is why I, like many others, have to
keep my weight down, Grudt says.
According to the Norwegian distributor of the coffee, studies have shown that CoffeeSlender has a slimming
effect. In one of these studies the participants lost an average of 1,5 kilos by drinking three cups of coffee
every day for a period of six weeks. Another study shows an average weight loss of 3,1 kilos after 12 weeks.
Norway on top
When it comes to drinking coffee, the Norwegians are among the best in the world. According to figures from
Norsk Kaffe Informasjon, only the Fins beat us on the amount of coffee consumed.
IN OUR DEFENCE
Anti oxidants is a generic term for organic substances, like for instance vitamin C, E and A, selenium and
Beta-Carotenes, which protect us from the free radicals that are formed when the body burns oxygen. The free
oxygen radicals may damage genetic material, proteins and cells. This phenomenon is also called oxidative
stress.

Save calories in coffee bars
Coffee made in coffee bars may be full of calories. Whole milk, cream and different syrups gives the most
calorie rich beverages and may contain several hundred calories. Here is an overview of the most popular
coffee drinks:
Espresso: Strong coffee. Does not contain milk, so counting calories is not necessary.
Café Americana: A single or double espresso topped off with hot water. Does not contain milk, so counting
calories is not necessary.
Caffe macchiato: Means “spotty” in Italian. Single or double espresso with foamed milk. The content of milk
is so low that you do not have to count calories.
Caffe Latte/Café au lait: Single or double espresso with steamed milk. Ratio: one part coffee, five parts
milk. Café au lait is very similar but contains slightly less milk. Plain latte with whole milk: 165-200 calories
and 10-12 grams of fat. Plain latte with lowfat milk: 115-135 calories and about 4,5 grams of fat.
Cappuccino: One third espresso, one third milk and one third foamed milk. Plain with whole milk: 65-100
calories and 4-6 grams of fat. Plain with lowfat milk: 45-70 calories and about 2 grams of fat.
Cortado: The Spanish version of caffe macchiato, but the foamed milk is replaced with steamed milk. Plain
with whole milk: 20 calories and 1 gram of fat. Plain with lowfat milk: 15 calories and 0,5 grams of fat.
Caffe mocha: Espresso, steamed milk and dark chocolate (latte with chocolate sauce). Plain with whole milk:
230-270 calories and about 12 grams of fat. Plain with lowfat milk: 180-205 calories and about 5 grams of fat.

INCREASES THE METABOLISM: Coffee is good for you in appropriate dosages. 1,5 decilitres of strong
coffee increases the metabolism while resting with seven percent for three hours, but the effect declines at a
frequent intake of coffee.

Slim with sugar in the coffee!
Sugar in the coffee reduces the risk of obesity, Professor Finn Gyntelberg from the Danish Bispebjerg
Hospital, says. He has done research on the subject and is surprised to see that the risk of overweight is
reduced with 40 per cent if one puts sugar in the coffee or tee. The Professor cannot say for sure why the
sugar seems to have this effect, but he thinks that it contributes to a decreased appetite.
- The sugar in the coffee stimulates a signal substance in the intestine that decreases the appetite. The content
of calories in the sugar means much less than the reduced intake of food, Gyntelberg says.

High blood cholesterol?
Percolated coffee has little effect on the level of cholesterol in the blood. The same applies to instant coffee.
As most of us know, a too high level of cholesterol may be a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Regular
coffee has proved to increase the level of cholesterol in the blood. Pressed coffee also contains small amounts
of the fatty substances that may lead to an increase the blood cholesterol since this way of preparing coffee is
an “advanced way” of making coffee.
