MEASURING & CONSTRUCTION - Shutters were the first storm windows ... Most are hinged to fill
or cover the same opening as a storm window or screen when closed inside the trim casing.
Although shutters today are often installed for decorative purposes, they look best when sized for
the window opening. If shutters will be functional, measure the area they will fill or cover when
closed. Allow 1/4" clearance all around the opening for shutters that will close into a window
pocket (casing). Mortise & tenon construction is time tested, proven to provide long life in wood
shutters, among many other wood products and antiques still with us today. Western red cedar is a

renewable resource, the preferred wood for exterior shutters, and it is naturally decay resistant.
