1. INTRODUCTION
AMOS-5, launched in December 2011, establishes the new 17°E orbital position for
Spacecom, providing a full range of satellite services over Africa.
AMOS-5 offers pan-African coverage, featuring a high-power C-band beam and three
regional Ku-band beams. With multiple, powerful C-band and Ku-band transponders and
excellent look angle, AMOS-5 enables Spacecom to offer a variety of satcom services,
including:
• Very small aperture terminal (VSAT) communications and broadband Internet
• Telephony services
• Data trunking
• Cellular backhaul
• Direct-to-Home (DTH) TV broadcasting
• Video distribution
With a new orbital slot, additional capacity, expanded coverage areas and service flexibility
for cross-region connectivity, AMOS-5 places Spacecom at the forefront of operators
delivering comprehensive satellite solutions, extending broadcast and broadband reach into
the vast rural regions of the African continent.
The service areas:
AMOS-5’s antenna beams are optimized for maximum performance over Africa with access
to Europe and the Middle-East. The satellite features steerable beams that enable every
beam to be re-pointed toward any area within the visual earth from 17°E.
The frequency bands used in Ku-band are the FSS and BSS bands. Cross-connect channels
between C-band and Ku-band enable flexible communication between Africa and Europe.
