Veterans on Parade
A brief “bio salute” to some of our area’s veterans who quietly and bravely
served our country in both peace and conflict.
Today we would like to turn our spotlight on a
lifetime Michigan City veteran who though now 84
years young, still walks with a “military swagger” and
keeps his white hair undercover by a short brim cap
which he proudly wears with a 100 mission crush. When
you see him in church without the cap, he’s hard to
recognize. He had some by-pass surgery a few years
ago but sure looks like he could take on “John L.
Sullivan!”
Captain Barney O'Hara, United States Army Air Force, 1942.
Barney joined the Army Air Force five days after
Pearl Harbor (Dec. 12, 1941) in Indianapolis. After training stints in California, he got his wings at Luke
Field near Phoenix, Arizona and bombing training at
Davis-Monchon Field near Tucson. From there he traveled half way around the world to Yanki, China,
where he captained his B-24 (Liberator) in bombing
runs against Jap targets in captured Chinese locations
and even the captured British Isle of Hong Kong. While
America was building up their air production at
home, Captain O’Hara
and a few more, together
with
General
Chemault’s “Flying
Tigers”, held the Japanese
in check until more help
arrived in late 1943. He
recalled that his plane
was jumped on by six
Jap Zeros’ over Canton
China and his crew had
their hands full until two
Flying Tigers (P-40’s with
Tiger Teeth painted on
Barney a few years later.
the nose) came to their
aid disbursing the six Zeros and breaking off their attack.
Besides their bombing runs, Captain O’Hara flew
the “hump” (over the Himalayan mountains) 77
times, bringing in needed munitions and supplies
from ports in India. Barney talked with true pride that
in nearly two years in China he never lost his plane
or any of the crew.
He finally returned home in November 1943 as large
groups and even Superfortresses took the war even
to the Japanese mainland. After a short leave, he flew
C-47 cargo planes coast to coast, ferrying wounded G.I.’s
to hospitals and supplies where they were needed most.
After the war, Barney flew as a company pilot out
of South Bend, Gary, and Chicago airports. He then
started a business of heavy equipment (bulldozers,
earthmovers, etc.) which still bears his name and attention.
He has been married to his wife, Helen, for 57
years (since 1944). His daughter, Micky Gallas (real
estate) and a son, Michael Patrick (Woodruff & Sons)
are both successful in Michigan City. But his grandkids are his pride and joy and he radiates whenever
they are brought up.
So we salute “Barney” O’Hara who served his
country with distinction in far off China and raised
a fine family and at 84 is still involved in his business
and community. We are proud to have him as a Life
Member of VFW Post 2536.

A Memorial Day Message
by Sally Carpenter
I salute you. I do not know your name but your face
is the face of youth; the face of promise of the future;
of the endless summers to come. But too often that
summer never came; the promise lay unfulfilled. It
died on the battlefield. A battlefield in America, in
Europe, in the Far East, does it matter where?
I salute you. Along with my grandfather, who was
in WWI, the “war to end all wars”; my father, who fought
in Europe in WWII, and my brother-in-law, who went
to Viet Nam, a place no one had ever heard of.
I raise my hand to my heart as the flag goes by and
I salute you. Without all that you have sacrificed, where
would any of us be today?

Using what you have to get the look you want. . .
Carolyn Harris Restyles an Interior
by Maggie Beyer
The bidding was sharp but Sue Spitler stayed with it. . .and was a Silent Auction winner at the Spring
Fling sponsored by the Michiana Humane Society last March. Her prize. . .a restyling of her living space
donated to the auction by Carolyn Harris, a pro in the field. Carolyn promises to give a fresh, new look without the cost of new furnishings, using your existing furniture, accessories, art and personal things. Did she
succeed at Sue’s? You be the judge.
Friends of Sue would be the last to feel that Sue’s
attractive home on Avondale in Long Beach needed
any help. It was filled with exciting, interesting artwork and the whimsies that Sue collects, fun to see
wherever you looked, conversation points at every party.
But Sue wanted a new look; her life was changing to
a retirement mode, and wanted the rooms she lived
in to have a change, too. “I’ve been bored with my house,”
Sue said. “I like what I have but I wanted a new look.”
A collector of eclectic art as she calls her “whimsies”,
she said she came to the point of something must be
done when a friend gifted her with a beautiful turned
wood box. She looked around, and found she had
absolutely no place to put it. “I wanted to change things,
but I realized I didn’t have the brain power to think
it through,” Sue admitted. Along came her winning
bid, and along came Carolyn to make it happen.
“Now I could put the problem into her knowing
hands.”
First there was a preliminary discussion, as Carolyn
does with every client, a walk through to assess what
was there, what pieces were prized, what could go, and
what the space needed to provide. Before the Big
Restyling Day, Sue assessed as well. She marked the
pieces that were musts, like her Raku collection and
some special art; her desk for journaling at the window with its view of the lake; and of course, the
baby grand piano. B-Day was slated for May 4th. Sue
took off for Saugatuck with
a coterie of friends and a
promise to stay away until
at least 5 pm when the
new look would be unveiled.
Sculptures and Raku come out of
hiding and this corner becomes an
art display.
Before
The grand piano had to stay. . .and became an art form. .
.the painting and torchiere carry out a sculptural theme.
After

Page 5
Then Carolyn and her helpers, Helga Miller and Jane
Slater moved in. First they cleared the rooms, sun
room, living room, dining room, moving furniture
and art work out so they might have a clean look at
redefining the space. Here the designer’s art of balance, lighting, color coordination, furniture placement came into play. The large sofa (a sleeper that
had to stay) and the grand piano (a must that couldn’t be moved) were her main concerns, Carolyn said.
“I stayed up all night wondering if moving that sofa
to the center of the sun room would still leave room
for traffic around it,” she said. It did and set the scene
for a new focal point for the room, sofa facing fireplace.
The work went on all day. A dining room buffet shifted to the wall beneath the stairs. . .the stereo system
moved to the sun room. . .Sue’s Raku originals moved
to pedestals in the corner, worthy of the prize they took
at a Blank Center for the Arts exhibition. A major move
was stacking bookcases together on a sun room wall,
an idea inspired by Helga, to hold books and whimsies, an art center onto itself. . .tables and chests found
new uses flanking the sofas and chairs. The same elements that make the rooms so appealing — polished
wood floors, windows streaming light on plants needed no frills, creamy walls, a background for paintings
— all remained. Only one chair found its way to an
upstairs bedroom, one crate stand went to the basement, where a large basket for Sue’s prayer sticks was
found. Oh, and some serapes from Sue’s Mexico
trips were discovered in a dining room drawer, perfect to drape over the sun room sofa. (Sue’s cats
liked to nap there, and found the serapes much to their
liking.)
Carolyn Harris Continued on Page 6
Conversation wasn’t easy across the sun room. The sofa switched to
face the fireplace, a chair corners it for easy conversation. Now the
room has a focal point in the fireplace and views of the garden and
lake outside.
Sue’s writing table stayed, just switched its angle, enhancing the view.
Sue thought this pair of chairs just had to stay together. They didn’t. One moved to pair with the sun room sofa and her portrait
moved to its fireplace wall. Now the living room sofa could move
in closer to the fireplace, flanked by a sofa table with cushioned
stools beneath.
Page 6

Not bad. . .but this is better. It was Jane’s idea to borrow a buffet from the dining
room. A mirror moves in, reflecting a view that can be seen from the entrance hall.
Carolyn Harris Continued from Page 5
I arrived for the unveiling party in time to find the
last pictures going up with Jane and Helga doing a
touch of spackling where others had come down.
The look was new and wonderful. . .but most surprising
and wonderful to me was that the rooms felt as if this
was how they were always meant to be.
Witching hour was near, bottles of wine waiting to
be uncorked, Sue and friends rolled down the drive.
Veni, Vidi, Vici. . .they came in, they saw, and were
conquered one and all by what Carolyn and her crew
hath wrought. Oh my god, look at this, I can’t believe
it, terrific, I don’t know where to look first, unbelievable, it’s so perfect were the cries as the group entered.
. . wow, Wow, WOW, came from Sue. A search to see
where a favorite piece from Sue’s collection had found
a new home, all agreeing the restyling made the
rooms work in a way they never had before.
Bookcases stacked give the room height. . .and style as
collections group together.
Was Carolyn Harris, veteran of years of work in interior design with personal and corporate clients,
pleased? “Yes,” she said. “I’m very pleased that
what I thought were going to be problems, weren’t,
and that working with Helga and Jane for the first
time went so smoothly. When I changed direction from
my interior design business to start Interiors, restyled,
a few years ago, I knew it would fill a need for people who wanted a fresh, new interior without the
cost of new furnishings and the expense of traditional interior design. It’s a new approach and my experience with other clients shows it can be done.”
Was Sue happy? “I love it!”, she said. “It’s just right
for me.”
Bookcases stacked give the room height. . .and style as collections group
together. They were there for the unveiling of Sue’s interior, restyled: front,

Yesss! Sue Spitler and Carolyn Harris toast a successful collaboration.
Carolyn Harris, who lives in Long Beach at Stop
23, has been an interior designer and design consultant since receiving her Master of Interior Design degree
from the University of Colorado at Denver in 1986.
She is a member of Interior Redesign Industry
Specialists, an organization that provides special
training, and that recently held a convention in
Chicago where over 50 members gathered together
to discuss problems and future goals of their growing
specialty. The group came from many states, international now with Canada and Australia among its
members, many from California, a big thing in that
state where new concepts often begin.
Restyling can work with one room, or as in Sue’s
case, one room leads to another. Always a challenge
that calls on everything Carolyn has learned in 15 years
of interior design work. Carolyn calls her biggest challenge as being called in to do just one room, restyling
a television room for a convent in California. The nuns,
Irish and adamant, didn’t like the way they viewed
their TV time, one had problem seeing, another couldn’t hear, they just weren’t happy. She had five LazyBoys and a large sofa to somehow incorporate in the
plan. Impossible? “Actually, we did a lot,” Carolyn
said. “First of all, the television was in the wrong place.
It was in front of a sliding glass door with light coming in dimming the screen. We rearranged everything.
When the sisters came in to see it, they looked around,
exclaiming at what had happened and went immediately
to their own television chairs, happy as could be.
Once you get your focal point, everything seems to fall
in place.”
Important points in restyling an interior from
Carolyn:
Finding the focal point, like moving the sofa in
the sun room in front of the fireplace at Sue’s. Before
it had been placed against a wall, two chairs across
the room on another wall. Conversation just wasn’t
easy across a 15-foot expanse.
Page 7
Lighting is of prime importance. “When you are
working with the lamps and lighting fixtures that people have,” Carolyn explained, “you try to create a
triangle of light.” Carolyn and Sue agreed she needed another lamp in the sun room, part of the “tweaking” that occurs when a room is restyled. Along with
restyling a room for a new approach to living now,
Carolyn will offer suggestions for what she feels can
be future possibilities.
Using what’s important to people, like the
writing table before the window for Sue, a special reading chair that another person might love, or a special
chair for watching television. “It’s all about working
with the way people want to live,” Carolyn said.
“Their special needs.”
I could see that Carolyn could have helped in my
quandary two years ago when I moved from my Long
Beach home to a half-the-size cottage in Michiana
Shores. What to keep and where was it going to go?
Restyling can work for upsizing or downsizing, for office
and work space (Oh, Carolyn, where am I going to find
more file space? I’m out of book shelves, even now.)
It could work when two households merge or when
inherited furniture comes your way. Jane Slater
added another twist. She calls herself a frustrated
interior decorator. “I’ve always loved moving things
around and adding special touches,” she said. “When
my daughter put her home on the market, I hesitantly
asked her if I could make some changes in her rooms.
She liked them so much, she said she didn’t want to
sell her home, and I think the changes helped sell it.
When Carolyn asked me to help her, I jumped at the
chance.”
Much can happen in a restyled environment, and
these are its goals: the space flows; it looks beautiful, and professional; the space has energy; it’s harmonious and inviting; you feel comfort; it’s functional. It works. For anyone interested, her number is
Carolyn Harris, 219/879-9894.
A special need cat needs a special home
Sue Spitler, a super foster care volunteer for the Michiana Humane
Society, has cared for 37 kittens and their mothers, all finding placement, special pets who had their start in life with special loving care.
This is number 38 whose two kittens recently found homes. Now she
needs a home, a special one. Pure white and blue eyed, she may
have an usual gene sometimes inherent to this type, that makes her
deaf. Not too serious, just a need for understanding. For now, she
has a home at Sue’s who will be happy to let an interested adoptive
parent get acquainted. Call her at 874-5644.

I was in the store the other day looking for graduation cards, when I realized that the people who actually write the cards are paid far too little. I appreciate a fair amount of sentiment at appropriate times,
and I realize that “sappy” is sometime suitable. But
as I thumbed through row after row of “Congratulations,”
“Great Job,” and “The World is at Your Feet,” I realized that there are times when more is needed.
Beyond the congratulatory language, the most prevalent messages in graduation cards are words of
encouragement. While some card authors have done
well in constructing pearls of wisdom, I have found
some words of advice that apply on graduation day
and beyond. Have Hope. Have Faith. Have Love.
Three Words of Strength
by Friedrich von Schiller
There are three lessons I would write,
Three words, as with a burning pen,
In tracings of eternal lights,
Upon the hearts of men.
Have Hope. Though clouds environ round,
And gladness hides her face in scorn,
Put off the shadow from thy brow:
No night but hath its morn.
Have Faith. Where’er thy bark is driven,
The calm’s disport, the tempest’s mirth,
Know this: God rules the hosts of heaven,
The inhabitants of earth.
Have Love. Not love alone for one,
But man, as man thy brother call;
And scatter, like a circling sun,
Thy charities on all.

The Area Artists Association of the John G. Blank
Center for the Arts announces this exhibit which
will run May 27-June 26. These photographers, who
work independently and have widely different visions,
are all members of the AAA. They are: George Kassal
of Long Beach; Jerry Joschko and Symon Lobsang of
Michigan City; Clinton Rigg of Kouts; Rob Rothermel
and Kelly Tokoly of LaPorte.
George Kassal, a member of the Adjunct Faculty
of the Art Department at Indiana University Northwest,
is the veteran of the group and will show his advanced
digital prints. Jerry Joschko, a professional photographer, focuses on a classical format for his nature photos. Clinton Rigg, an active participant in photographic circles, explores aspects of industrial subject
matter. Rob Rothermel, the one member of the group
without formal training, will show experiments with
light and filtered exposures. Kelly Tokoly, a traveling
elementary art teacher, has a contemporary interest
in character profiles using portraits of cats. Symon
Lobsang, a relative newcomer to Michigan City who
opened a studio here just a year ago, will exhibit
landscape studies.
The Art of Speed
This exhibit of paintings and drawings of classic racing cars and motorcycles is presented by Chicago
artist Brian Kinkaid. After retiring from a career in
commercial art, Kinkaid has devoted his time to creativity, craftsmanship and reading. His depictions of
the shape and structure of racing machines is more
than realistic representation of fascinating objectsit is a profound exploration of the ideas behind
mankind’s love affair with speed.
According to Kinkaid, “Mankind’s fascination with
speed dates back to the time when we were running
after or away from animals...The machines shown here
were made by a broad spectrum of people out of love
for the sport. Some were triumphant, some were failures, some of the best have been forgotten. They
were all hand made and they still are to this day, and
every one has earned the right to be shown, however imperfectly, for the sake of the effort involved, the
sheer quality and the love of the art.” Kinkaid considers these machines art, and his depictions of them
are about art, “celebrating love if you will, for its
own sake.”
Adding to the excitement of the show will be the presence of two actual classic motorcycles installed in the
downstairs galleries and film footage of road races.
The public is invited to attend an opening reception for all artists on Sun., May 27, from 4-6 p.m. Gallery
hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and
Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The John G. Blank Center
for the Arts is located at 312 East Eighth Street in
Michigan City. For more information, phone 8744900.

Cruising the “Mother Road”
The person at the rental car desk at Sky Harbor airport tried to talk me into upgrading my assigned
Ford Focus to a sporty convertible. I wasn’t biting.
One look out of the airport’s windows toward
Phoenix’ skyline said one thing: smog. And although
I was heading at least 100 miles north of the capitol
city, the idea of a stinging hot sun beating down on
my head did not appeal.
That decision held firm until the fifth vacation
day, when we were in the Flagstaff area. Flagstaff is
usually at least 20 degrees cooler than the low desert
places, and on this particular Monday 70-degree sunshine felt just fine.
We had just left Walnut Canyon after a very brief
visit to the National Monument. By brief, I mean about
20 minutes. The park, site of 800-year old Sinagua cliff
dwellings along the limestone-rimmed canyon, has but
two trails: easy and very difficult. At a record 15
minutes, guess which one we took. We bypassed the
9/10-mile Island Trail that requires an 185-foot climb
back to the canyon rim. I can use Brian’s healing
sprained ankle as an excuse, or my own reluctance
to double or triple my heart rate.

As we exited out of the long, pine-forested road to
return to Flagstaff, we had the choice of taking the
Interstate or driving along Historic Route 66. It was
a no-contest decision and it was here that I wished
that I had taken up the rental car clerk’s suggestion
earlier in the week.
As we sped, or more precisely, cruised along the twolane white cement highway, I mentally hummed the
theme-music of that great, 50’s television classic
where Martin Milner and George Maharis cruised in
their red ‘Vette, hair blowing in the wind, along that
famous stretch of road. And here we were, in a very
uncool Ford Focus. No other cars on this road coming or going, at least for the first three miles. With a
windshield view of snow-capped San Francisco Peaks,
the ride was a few heady seconds of bliss. Woulda been
cool with the a top that folded down, but didn’t.

by Paula McHugh
But before one could say, “get your kicks…” we found
ourselves smack in the midst of roadside commerce.
Motels, restaurants, gas stations, and slowed-down
traffic. I found that Flagstaff is an easy place to get
lost in. Navigating Phoenix is easier. Round and
round we went, wrong turn here, then there. Soon we
were back on a crowded stretch of Route 66 again, but
this time I spotted a place I had read about on the
Internet. The Ford’s wheels jumped a curb and came
to stop in a rough-gravel parking lot. I had found the
Museum Club, also known as “The Zoo.”
Named by Car & Driver to be one of the nation’s
top ten roadhouses, this biker-friendly tavern, dance
hall, and betting parlor is the place that musicians
traveling along Route 66 would stop in to perform. And
there is even more history here. The 1931 log building built around five huge ponderosa pines was for-
merly home to the Dean Eldredge Museum, a collection
of taxidermied animals and Native American artifacts,
that thousands of tourists and hunting buffs would
visit. The building is on the National Register of
Historic Places, and was claimed at one time to be the
largest log cabin in Arizona. The entrance, looking like
an oversized bowlegged pair of cowboy chaps, is actually an inverted Ponderosa pine tree trunk with two
huge branches.
A Flagstaff saddle maker, Doc Williams, turned the
Museum into a nightclub in 1936. Williams kept the
stuffed animals that hang from the interior walls. Low
light made it difficult to photograph the bobcat, bear,
owls, peacock, and mountain lion that surround the
dance floor. You’ll have to go visit for yourself.

HEART SCAN: THE WORRY STOPS AND THE BEAT GOES ON
With incredible accuracy, the Heart CT-Scanner sees inside the arteries of the heart, and detects heart disease at its earliest, most treatable stages. A high score on this exam may be consistent with a moderate to high risk of suffering a cardiac event, like a heart attack, within the next two to five years.
The Heart CT-Scanner is safe. It’s pain-free. It’s non-invasive. It’s cost-effective. It doesn’t require a doctor’s order. It
takes only 10 minutes. It’s worth it! It’s for men 35 to 65 and women 40 to 70, especially if you have one or more of the
following risk factors:
• Family history of heart disease
• High blood pressure
• Diabetes mellitus
• High cholesterol level, high triglycerides
or low HDL plasma levels
• Obesity
• Smoking
• Abnormal EKG
• Atypical chest pain
• Sedentary lifestyle

What is a trip to the Sedona area without dipping
into some New Age experiences?
The Native American drumming circles may or
may not be considered new age, but they certainly are
everywhere within the Verde Valley. At the invitation
of my Cottonwood friend, Maya, I attended a special
performance of her duo, known as “As the Spirit
Moves.”
Maya and her friend Carol, a retired teacher from
Michigan began performing to audiences in nursing
homes, RV parks, and community functions a few years
ago. How they got started is an interesting story.

One evening Maya and Carol were playing with
music; Maya was drumming, and Carol was experimenting with her new wooden flute. With no particular music to guide them, they ‘let the spirit move them”
and liked what came out. They turned on Maya’s
tape recorder, and the playback amazed them. Soon
after, they recorded and distributed a tape, aptly
titled, “As the Spirit Moves.” Neither woman has
had any formal musical background, but the soothing sounds found a wide local appeal.

Carol and Maya had been booked to perform at a
large RV park in Camp Verde, where non-drumming
vagabond RV-ers came to listen to the Native American
sounds. Little did the audience know that before the
evening was over, they too would be pulled into the
hypnotic appeal of the music. Extra drums, rattles and
sticks were passed around to everyone who wished to
join in. A tentative stiffness of boom, shah, clack,
clack evolved into set after energizing set. A new
drumming circle was about to be born.
Among the invited guests, Doris Grinsfelder, a
former Marin County native, invited me to visit the
rubber tire Earthship that she built on her Cornville
property. I was interested in seeing how discarded and
unwanted tires could be transformed into an attractive living space. Doris’ Earthship is well known to
drumming circles in this part of Arizona. The retreat
space, filled with airy wicker and old antiques, has
a wall of windows on one side, a small woodburner on
the opposite wall. White walls are plastered; the
tires cannot be seen. Doris’ acrylic landscape paintings add color to the walls, and the cement floors are
covered with Persian carpets that add more pattern
and color.

Doris Grinsfelder
Doris has hosted a small international gathering
in her Earthship and in addition to the monthly new
moon drumming circle, the space is used for workshops
by the easygoing Cornville resident. Just up the hill,
a smaller, round adobe structure welcomes guests for
meditation. If a searcher is seeking peace and quiet,
Doris’ is the perfect spot. No noise here from trains,
planes and highways. Only the occasional shrill cry
of a hawk or a barking dog in the distance.
Doris’ Earthship and Maya and Carol’s “As the
Spirit Moves” are what some would describe as “typical Sedona.” But you won’t find them on any scheduled tour.
That’s the nice part of getting to know the locals.

Move Over, Harry, There’s a Better Potter in Town….
by Carolyn McConnell
So there’s a
Harry Potter, a
Beatrix Potter and
I used to know a
girl named Patsy
Potter…. We have
our own eminent
potter, a real potter,
here in Michigan
City. His name is
Paul Jeselskis and
his home and his
pottery studio are
located at 619
Eastwood Road.
Paul has lived and
worked here for ten
years, under the
business name
Jeselskis Potteries,
Paul, the Potter.
and co-habits with
his friendly little three-legged Westie Mutt called
Gallop, named after his birthplace, Gallop, New
Mexico.
Paul was overloaded in college, majoring in
Psychology and Geological Engineering, but decided
to add a just-for-fun ceramics class at the last moment
one semester. That last minute seemingly unimportant decision changed his life dramatically.
Now, after the first several years of slowly building his own business, he is a smooth operator indeed.
His studio equipment is amazing. To begin at the begin-
Dies for casting large pieces.
ning, Paul, himself, built his own
studio behind the
big brick house on
Eastwood. From
the outside it looks
like a neat little
shed. Inside? It’s
huge! There are
four rooms housing three electric
kilns, one enormous gas kiln with
another in the
making, to be
called a “car kiln”
because it is on
rails. Yes, rails, as
in railroad. This
makes really heavy

pots manageable,
as they’re literally rolled from the kiln shelves via the
rails. Paul builds his own kilns, too, using insulated
firebrick and spun ceramic fiber (looks like cotton candy,
but is considerably hardier!). The gas fired kilns are
used for glazed
pieces only. And
the highest temperature the
kilns attain is
2380 degrees.
Whew.
The 30-ton hydraulic press that does
ts job in 40 seconds.
May 24, 2001
Page 51
Besides being an eminent potter and a topnotch builder, Paul has a
wide ranging background. His first ordinary job at the age of 13 was
at a fast food joint, but he quickly moved up to loading trucks for a higher wage, much heavier work and a longer week! He’s done construction
work, plumbing, masonry, worked with concrete. It’s rather surprising,
after all that heavy work, to see some of the exquisite pottery pieces he
constructs. He has an ongoing fascination with the chemistry and the
scientific areas of his work Did you know that elite bone china is made
of calcium from ground animal bones? that zinc, besides being in those
cold tablets in our medicine chests, is also a pottery glaze ingredient?
The tallest piece Paul ever made was a 5’ tall floor vase, done in sections on the wheel, then put together with ‘slip’ (dry clay remnants mixed
with water), used as a potter’s glue, as well
as liquid clay. Paul’s most popular ‘open’
ceramic pieces (such as dinnerware, bowls, but
nothing with a
narrow top opening) are made in
dies and result
in leather-hard
pieces of pottery.
The potter at his wheel.

The dies are processed
in an enormous 30-ton

works with approximately 300 pounds of clay per day, using his own
clay recipe. His greatest asset in mixing the
Carved Cass.
clay is a de-airing pugmill, a big ugly machine
that has made his life in the studio a hundred times easier. Before its
arrival at the studio, the clay had to be kneaded by hand, a job much more
difficult than kneading, say, homemade bread. Paul generally works at
a stand-up potters wheel, believing it’s less tiring than sitting at a
wheel, as most potters do. If the piece is very large, he will move it to a
second wheel which is at floor level and, thus, puts the tall piece entirely within reach.
Facet Bottle.
Business at Jeselskis Potteries
is incredibly active. If Paul isn’t at the wheels or the molds or glazing or loading kilns, he’s packing merchandise to ship to his clients,
who are all over the country, or helping to unload the 5000 pounds of
dry clay he’d ordered the week before. He has little time for visitors’
ooh-ing and ah-ing over his lovely creations, but often has pieces on
display at the Schoolhouse Gallery in Furnessville. And this year he
will be exhibiting at Ann Arbor Art Fair, the art fair in Cherry Creek,
Colorado, and of course, our local Lakefront Arts Festival here in
Michigan City in August. And a web page is coming up soon.
If you’re driving by Jeselskis Potteries, 619 Eastwood Road (it
becomes Moore Road, north side of Route 12), drop in for a quick tour
of astonishing art and its equipment. You will be greeted by Paul, an
amenable host, and, of course, the enchanting three-legged Gallop.
Gallop, the 3-legged charmer.

Fourth grade students at Notre Dame School
learned the history of the Gold Rush and the “Fortyniners” through a simulation project, where points from
activities would earn them gold nuggets. Teacher
Lynn Delehanty would “round up” the students to the
sound of cowboy music. They would then don cowboy
hats and bandannas, assuming the role of miners.
Each group developed a mining camp. The selfappointed names were: Western Hi Hoe’s; Golden
Roundups; Burritos; Gunsmith; Taco Buccaneiners;
and, Cheese Enchiladas. Duties were rotated as
leader, prospector, or recorder of a log. In order to win
golden nuggets, each group had to learn background
information to be successful at claiming a mine.
Of course, life wasn’t easy in the 1850’s. Selected
fate cards could mean losing cattle because of poor planning, sacrificing your mining equipment in a gambling
bet, or skipping a day of mining because of a snakebite.
Many decisions had to be made. At the end of each lesson, miners recorded the day’s events. The western
dialect added realism to the logs.
The project culminated with a gold dig, each camp
staking its claim and panning for gold. The harsh reality of western times especially hit the Burritos.
Having collected the most gold, they succumbed to the
temptations of gambling and lost half their fortune.
Here are excerpts from the miners’ logs:

Calling all Cars to Phil’s 7th Annual Car Show!
by Charles McKelvy
Vintage cars, their
owners and admirers
will gather Saturday,
June 2 at Frog Forest
Findings in Union Pier,
Michigan for Phil’s 7th
Annual Car Show.
Last year ’s event
drew a record 196 registered vehicles, and
organizers are expecting even more this
year. The show is open
to all automotive buffs,
and registration begins
at 10 a.m. (Michigan
Time) with the first 100 entrants receiving a free
dash plaque and t-shirt.
Judging will take place between noon and 1 p.m.
and awards will be based on a wide variety of criteria. Last year’s Phil’s Choice was a 1928 Roadster Pickup, and Phyllis’s choice was a 1954 Chevy Bel-Air twodoor hardtop.
“Phil and Phyllis” are actually Les and Kathy
Grebetz, but for this one magic day of automotive ecstasy, the two gracefully aging baby boomers gladly
revert to the personas of their golden youth.
Kathy “Phyllis” Grebetz recently took time away
from her duties at Frog Forest Findings to explain:
“This is a fabulous event. We have great food from
Classic Catering of Bridgman starting with coffee and
donuts in the morning and continuing with an amazing barbecue. If you love vintage cars and trucks, you’ll
really enjoy this day of vintage vehicles and great food.”
Co-sponsored by Phil’s Service Station and the
Southwestern Michigan Car Collectors Association,
the car show offers
first, second, and third
place awards for:
Corvettes, T-Birds,
trucks, street rods,
hot-rod fat fenders,
and vehicles from
1900-1939, 1940-1959,
and 1960-1979.
In addition to Phil’s
and Phyllis’s awards,
prizes are given for
best paint job, best
original, best work-inprogress, and the “Just
Do It Right Award” in
honor of Alliance Bank founder Larry Bubb who died
last summer.
“This show builds every year because the of the quality of prizes offered and because of the support and
prizes we receive from our sponsors,” Phyllis Grebetz
said.
This year’s awards will be given by three local
businesses: Pine Garth Inn, St. Julian Wine Company,
and Classic Imports.Contestants will take their vintage cars on the annual tour of the area at 2 p.m. and
return back to Frog Forest Findings for the award ceremony at 3 p.m.
The Grebetzs are expecting another record turn-out
this year and credit their co-sponsor for the show’s success.
“In fact, it was a member of the Southwestern
Michigan Car Collectors, or SMCC, who really got the
whole thing rolling in the first place.
“It was 1994, and we had just opened, and we
were getting a delivery from a freight company, and
Phil’s Car Show attracts many vintage cars, like these seen at last year’s show.

the delivery guy took one look at all the automotive
memorabilia we had for sale (in what they call Phil’s
Service Station), and he said he was going to tell
the rest of the guys about us. The rest is history,” Kathy
Grebetz said.
They attracted 85 antique and vintage cars and their
owners to what they called “Phil’s First Annual DriveIn” on June 3, 1995, and the event has grown ever since.
Part of the success also must go to the care with which
the couple have stocked their three stores: Frog
Forest Findings, Phil’s Service Station, and Antique
Wannabe’s.
“Let’s face it,” Kathy Grebetz said, “most guys
hate going antiquing with their wives, so we decided to offer not only the stuff women like, but a place
for guys to hang out.”
That place is the aforementioned Phil’s Service
Station which brims with such great “guy stuff” as an
array of restored gas pumps, and original “globes” from
the tops of old gas pumps.
The three stores and Phil’s 7th Annual Car Show
are located just west of I-94 exit 6 on Union Pier
Road. There will be free parking both on site and nearby. For more information, phone Frog Forest at
616/469-7050 or the Southwestern Michigan Car
Collectors Association at 616/927-6697.

Community Heritage Day
An old-fashioned ice cream social, complete with red,
white and blue bunting and live Dixieland music
will mark Community Heritage Day at the New
Buffalo Railroad Museum on Sun., May 27, from 14 p.m., on the museum’s grounds at 530 S. Whittaker
Street, New Buffalo.
Both parents and kids will enjoy participating in
the Identi-Kids program in which children are fingerprinted and photographed for identification purposes in case they are ever lost or missing. The service is free, courtesy of the New Buffalo Police
Department and Chief Charles Heit, with kits donated by Kerhoulas Insurance Agency and Allstate.
Violet the Clown, assisted by Karla Madison, will
be on hand to entertain and offer free face painting.
Balloons, provided by Alliance Bank, will add to the
festivities.
“We’re planning a special tribute to Larry Bubb and
Tom Ray, both of whom were very active supporters
of the museum before their deaths last year. They were
very instrumental in accomplishing the recent improvements at the museum,” said Nadra Kissman, president of the museum’s board of directors. “We hope the
whole family will join us for Community Heritage Day
and a tour of the museum.”
Since opening its doors on May 26, 1990, the museum, which is housed in an authentic replica of the original Pere Marquette depot, has hosted more than
75,000 visitors from all fifty states and several foreign
countries.
Since that time, the museum has continually added
to its displays of railroad memorabilia and community history, including a model train layout recreating the railroad yard at the City of New Buffalo in the
1920’s and refurbished Chessie boxcar and WWII
Pullman Troop sleeper car. Self-guided tours of the museum are available. Admission and parking are free.
Net proceeds from the sale of refreshments, which
are being donated by Mrs. Whittaker’s Ice Cream and
Coffee Shoppe and Village Bake Shop, will go to the
museum’s operating fund. There will also be a 50-50
raffle and a craft and treasure table.
