Niagara head coach Dave Burkholder led RIT to the 1983 NCAA Division II Championship, as a goaltender. He is among the RIT all-time leaders in several goaltending categories, recording 83 wins, a 2.965 goals against average, .894 save percentage, and 12 shutouts from 1980-84. Conference Play the Rest of the Way... RIT plays its final 22 regular season contests against Atlantic Hockey foes. RIT is 3-2-1 in league play this season. The Tigers went 0-5-1 against non-league opponents in the regular season. RIT Gets First Shorthanded Goal of the Year... RIT scored its first shorthanded goal of the 2015-16 season in the 6-3 win over Robert Morris on Dec. 5, as Josh Mitchell sped in on a breakaway and was able to tally the goal. RIT scored five shorthanded goals a season ago. Tigers With Rare Pair of Home Losses in Weekend Series at Polisseni Center/Tigers off to Slow Start on Home Ice... On Nov. 13-14, RIT dropped consecutive games in overtime by identical 3-2 scores to Bentley at the Polisseni Center. It was the first time RIT was swept in a weekend series at the Gene Polisseni Center. RIT also had not lost a home game in overtime since Nov. 9, 2007 and did so in consecutive games. The home sweep marked just the third time RIT lost both home games in an Atlantic Hockey weekend (Nov. 9-10, 2012 and Feb. 14-15, 2014) since joining the league in 2006. RIT is just 1-4-0 at the second year building in 2015-16. A First... The back-to-back overtime losses to Bentley marked the first time RIT had ever suffered losses in the extra session in consecutive games at the Division I level. RIT has also played three straight overtime games, just behind the team record of four consecutive OT contests from Jan. 22 to Feb. 5, 2011. Traditionally Western Teams Hold Big Advantage over the Eastern Schools in League Play/Tigers Play Eight Straight vs. West Teams... Since the league expanded to 12 teams in 2011-12 and back down to 11 teams last season, the six Western schools (Air Force, Canisius, Mercyhurst, Niagara, Robert Morris and RIT) have feasted on the eastern schools (AIC, Army, Bentley, Holy Cross, and Sacred Heart). RIT played six straight games against Eastern teams to start league play, with a 3-2-1 mark. Overall, the Western teams went 43-26-11 against the East last year, as four of the top five seeds in the 2015 AHC Tournament were Western schools. So far, the West holds an 17-13-4 edge over the East this season. RIT’s Tough Non-Conference Schedule for 2015-16/Last Year Prepared Them Well... The Tigers play three of their six non-conference regular season contests against teams who were ranked when they played or are currently ranked in the USCHO.com national poll, including No. 2 Boston College, No. 10 Bowling Green, and No. 19 St. Lawrence. Last season, RIT competed against three NCAA teams in non-conference play during the regular season, including the regular season and postseason Big Ten Champion (Minnesota), second (Boston College) and fourth place (UMass Lowell) teams in Hockey East, and second (St. Lawrence) and third place (Yale) teams in the ECAC. Tigers Struggle Away From AHC... RIT is just 15-47-7 against non-AHC foes since the start of the 2006-07 season. RIT was 2-6 last season and 0-5-1 in 2015-16. The Tigers have never had a winning season against non-conference foes since moving to Division I in 2005. A new chapter in the history of college hockey was ushered into existence when the Atlantic Hockey Association was created on June 30, 2003, by nine charter members. The sixth Division I men’s ice hockey conference arose when the founding members-American International, Bentley, Canisius, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Mercyhurst, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and the United States Military Academy (Army)—required an organization that represented their specific needs. The group of nine broke away from their former conference affiliation, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and formed a conference specific to the sport of ice hockey. Robert DeGregorio, former commissioner of Hockey East, was named the conference’s first commissioner and played an integral role in the development of the league as play between the nine squads began in the fall of 2003. Success in the classroom is as important as success on the ice among the member institutions of Atlantic Hockey. A total of 190 student-athletes were named to the 2014-15 Atlantic Hockey All-Academic squad in recognition of their outstanding scholastic achievement. Atlantic Hockey athletes have also contributed their time off the ice to numerous charitable organizations as a way of saying thanks to their many supporters. Atlantic Hockey spans a total of five states: four in the northeast and one western state, reaching from the Atlantic Ocean to the banks of the Great Lakes and out to the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Members reside in Connecticut (Sacred Heart), Massachusetts (American International, Bentley, Holy Cross), New York (Army, Canisius, Niagara, RIT), Pennsylvania (Mercyhurst, Robert Morris), and Colorado (Air Force). In 2010-11, Niagara and Robert Morris joined the conference. This is the 12th season of existence for the Atlantic Hockey Association. In 2013, two AHA squads (Niagara and Canisius) made the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
