Dear Friend of the PTC,
Cable choice matters a lot. As the landscape of television continues to change,
the means by which you get your programming should change too. If you don’t
want to pay for MTV, or networks that program shows like The Shield, you shouldn’t
have to. But right now you have no choice. Why? Because cable companies say you can’t have one. Sort
of. You do have a choice to pay to add MORE channels to your “basic” package if you want. But a choice
in not taking and paying for shows that are offensive to you? Forget it. You have no choice in determining
what is in YOUR basic package.
Back in the early days of cable it may have been difficult to allow consumers to have an á la carte
choice because technology didn’t allow for such flexibility. But that has all changed today. The vast
majority of American homes receive television through cable, and the technology exists to allow consumers
to pick and choose the channels for which they want to pay. The cable industry doesn’t want to give you
that choice because they know half of their outrageous, offensive programming would be forced off the air
overnight for lack of support.
It’s extortion. If you want to get cable, you have to underwrite Hollywood’s obscene shows.
It’s a real violation of your freedom. As a consumer you choose the products and services you bring
into your home. You choose what telephone service you want, the furniture you buy, the food you eat,
the clothes you wear. You choose what sorts of entertainment your family enjoys….everything except for
television. Cable corporations force you to take and pay for what they want. You HAVE TO pay to
subsidize MTV’s smutty Real World, FX’s violence-laden The Shield and that network’s newest offering
Starved, which features themes of sodomy and bulimia on a regular basis.
Cable choice would mean that you could pick the channels you want to pay for and not be subject to
subsidizing that which you find morally objectionable. That is the message we are currently taking to
Congress. We want legislators to take action this year. The PTC believes the time for cable choice is now
… because our children are watching cable.
The cable industry knows that if we win their days of uninhibited sewage are over. Everything’s
riding on this battle, which is why the cable industry is now spending hundreds of millions of dollars
(literally!) to stop the PTC.

Sony Corp. Sole Sponsor of Ultra-Raunchy Nip/Tuck Season Premiere
Without question, Nip/Tuck is one of
the most sexually explicit, profane, and
violent television programs in the history
of American television. The season premiere
of the raunchy FX show was exclusively
sponsored by the Sony Corporation. By
doing so Sony has violated parents’ trust in
the Sony corporate brand. In case you aren’t
familiar with this profane and violent show,
here are some content examples that will
give you an idea of the depravity Sony has
chosen to endorse with its advertising
dollars:

Big Media Linked to the Rise in Indecent Programming
The rise in indecent material on broadcast stations can
be linked, at least in part, to an increasingly consolidated
media. This is the finding of a new report released last month
at a national press conference on Capitol Hill. Dan Isett, the
PTC’s Director of Corporate and Government Affairs was on
hand to help present the new report published by the Center
for Creative Voices in Media.
In 2003 the FCC loosened the rules of media ownership
and opened the door for large conglomerates to own more
stations. The report shows that when media is concentrated
in fewer owners’ hands, the decision by any broadcaster to
air indecent material impacts a substantially larger audience
than would otherwise be possible. PTC’s Dan Isett put it
this way, “It is only logical that a broadcaster who sees his

friends and neighbors every day is better equipped to make
decisions about community standards than a programming
executive thousands of miles away.”
According to the Center, “Ninety-six percent of all the
indecency fines levied by the FCC in radio from 2000 to 2003
(97 out of 101) were levied against four of the nation’s largest
radio station ownership groups - Clear Channel, Viacom,
Entercom and Emmis.” Because of these four stations’ reach,
shock jocks like Howard Stern and Bubba the Love Sponge
(both employed by Clear Channel during this study period) can
be heard in most major media markets. By relaxing media
ownership rules, the FCC gave free rein to these media
behemoths to spread their brand of raunch across the United
States.

GEICO Response Misleading
On August 25, 2005 PTC President Brent Bozell demanded Geico Insurance Company apologize to PTC members for
lying to them about sponsoring the raunchy Fox series The Shield. After a PTC Take Action campaign earlier this year
in which we urged our members to write to Geico about their sponsorship, and after Geico had admitted to PTC
leadership that they had been airing ads on the show, Geico sent letters to PTC members telling them they’d never
advertised on The Shield and that the PTC was wrong. Numerous PTC members, understandably confused, wrote us
demanding answers.
Well, here’s our answer: We weren’t wrong, Geico was misleading PTC’s members and Geico owed the PTC an apology.
Brent Bozell’s August 25th letter to Geico’s Asst. Vice President and Director of Corporate Communications, Janice
Minshall, explaining this situation and demanding an apology to our members, solicited a response on September 9,
2005 from Jonathon Shafner, Geico’s senior legal counsel.
Their letter has been reproduced below for you to see. It is disingenuous at best. For that reason we have written to them
again. Brent Bozell’s follow-up letter is also reproduced below for you to see. We believe our members deserve the truth.
