At a time when segregation was the law, Jackie Robinson was an American hero and an icon of America's favorite past time who stood up for what he knew to be right. The life and work of Jackie Robinson are recreated in this triumphant tale of one man's journey to forever change America. Brimming with inspiration, perseverance and hope, Jackie Robinson's story is sure to be a hit among young audiences. (K-5th Grade and all families). From the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati to audiences across America, this inspiring production has received nationwide acclaim. African Folktales is a 45 minute production that brings to life the vastness of the African landscape and a variety of clever animals. Join Akili as she shares these exciting tales that were traditionally passed down by word of mouth. With imaginative costumes and lots of audience participation, this production also includes valuable character-education themes. “African Folktales” Celebrate world cultures, literature and the art of interactive African storytelling with one of the brightest shows in the Bright Star repertoire! For audiences (Pre-K through 5 Grade and all1 families) The program takes place at 11am on February 13. February 2016 Children’s Programs February 2, 9 6-7pm African Mask Project. If you wish to be a part of the African Mask art project this is for you! Children’s club will begin project construction and learn the history of the African Mask. This will be a 2-week program for those who wish to participate. February 13, Bright Star Touring Group presents: 11:00-12 noon. African Folktales! See article on page 1 for details. 1-2pm Jackie Robinson. See article on page 1 for details. February 16, 6-7:00pm Gooey Slimy Science! Hands on science fun! February 20, 10:30-11:30am Meet the Author Day! Mrs. Kathleen D. Lindsey, author of Sweet Potato Pie, Run Faredy Run, and Miss Mattie’s Aprons will have a special interactive show of story telling , Caption describing songs, and history! All are welcome. 1-2pm picture or graphic. February 20, 1-2pm Meet Miss Naomi Jones! Local spokesperson for Cubs, a story just for kids! Naomi will be signing and reading an excerpt from the book. February 23, 6-7pm Chocolate Candy Bar Bingo Family Fun Night! Again it’s that time for…chocolate candy bar bingo!!! Bring a candy bar and participate in trying to win the jackpot! “To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the story here.” February 27,10:30-12 noon African Mask Project Artist’s Reception! Come out and support young artists from the Cumberland County Library Children and Teen clubs, Indian Avenue School of the Bridgeton Public School District, and The Bridgeton, Millville, and Vineland Public Charter Schools participants. African Cultural Art: Mask Making February 25, 2016 10:30-noon. Create a unique cultural mask in honor of your family ancestors. We will learn the art of the African mask, its purpose and importance of knowing “who we really are” through this fun filled project. All are welcome. This film series is free and recommended for adults 17 and older. Registration is not required. Our meeting room is handicapped and wheelchair accessible. Students learned about the Goma mask from the Republic of the Congo. Pictured is Miss Cona's first grade students displaying their work. Children’s Club members who took part in the 25 Days of Reading are pictured holding certificates received for participation. New Year, New You! On January 5 children's club had a great night with fitness! PJ, program coordinator of the Inspira PIT program shared ways to have family fun with exercise. Participants were challenged to be our best that they can be. 5 The Cumberland County Library's Children's Club members and parents had a lot of fun at a recent Family Fun Night Candy Bar Bingo held at the library on January 19. On January 16, Elsa and Anna visited Cumberland County Library for a very special event, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten! They shared in a special performance and read to all who joined in the festivities. If you are interested in being part of this program, be sure to visit Cumberland County Library and receive a starter kit. 6 A great time was had on January 18 with the Cumberland County Library's Children's Club and Teen Forum members in collaboration with Youth to Youth for the National Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. The members were able to make new friendships while serving others. Attendees were able to participate in service projects such as sewing pillows for a woman's shelter and packing school supplies for children in need. Philadelphia held the largest celebration for the national day of service. It was great to be a part of such a meaningful day and experience the joy of serving others. On January 21, the Cumberland County Library Teen Forum Group in collaboration with the Youth 2 Youth Program, participated in the Jefferson Awards Foundation: Students in Action Leadership Conference at Rowan University. The Youth 2 Youth Program is run under the direction of Karen Barnett, and is a county group open to all that empower youth to become leaders. Communication was the theme in which students were able to engage in public speaking, group presentations, and work in teams to create innovative volunteer projects.
