was built
in 1882,
between
existing
buildings. It’s upper storey was removed in the 1950s.
Originally The Lancashire & Yorkshire Bank Ltd., it became
Martins Bank and then Barclays Bank. The Bank Manager lived
next door to the bank.

The site of the Station Hotel was a yard where Squire Haworth kept pigs.
In one corner was a stable. The hotel was built by Thomas Pickup
(“Tommy Saddler”), the room at the corner of Garden Street being used by
him as a saddler’s shop.

The Flower Gallery – 12 Bridge St
Mary Jane Lomax 1883 – 1976 was known as Cissie. She
was a milliner at 12 Bridge Street and the daughter of
Thomas & Maria Stephenson of the Rising Sun, public
house.
In a small side window of the shop there was always a
selection of black hats for funerals and in the large front
window, a selection of seasonal hats, straw in summer and
felt in winter. A curtain was hung at the back of the window
making the shop rather dark.

NatWest Bank - 15 & 17 Bridge St
Originally a grocer’s shop, run by Squire Haworth and wife Ellen.
In 1871 Ellen was a widow but still traded as a grocer until the
early 1880s when it was run by John Castle.
By 1888 John Keenaghan, wine merchant, ran his business here.
By 1900 it had become Manchester & Liverpool District Banking
Co. Ltd. They merged with County Bank in 1935 and the
following year with District Bank Ltd.
District Bank Ltd merged with Westminster Bank Ltd & National
Provincial Bank Ltd to become National Westminster Bank
Ltd., on 1st January 1970.
This, in turn was taken over by Royal Bank of Scotland in 1999.
However NatWest branches still operate under this name.

Advert from an early 20th century trade Directory.
Built in 1849.
1871 From new, this property was occupied by James Holden, a
bookseller and stationer, together with his wife Rebecca. He was
also a schoolmaster at Crow Lane and only had one arm.
1924 – Thomas Holden (son of James) – bookseller
1955 – A. Chadwick, bookseller/stationer. In 1931 the shop was
taken over by Arthur Chadwick - later he also sold sports and
fancy goods.

Built 1849 originally occupied by Thomas Heap & family. It was a
‘grocers shop’. Mr Heap was also a coal merchant and building
contractor and built a number of local houses in the mid-19th century

workers had a full breakfast here before starting work.

The first reference to this site was in 1881 when German born brothers Garson &
Albert Dold ran their watch/clock making business here.
1924 – Williams Deacons Bank Ltd. It was originally known as The Manchester
& Salford Bank Ltd.
It later became Williams & Glyns Bank Ltd before being taken over by Royal

Walmsleys butchers about 1990
This has been a butcher’s shop since before 1861 when it belonged to
John Smith.
1924 – E. H. Greenwood, butcher
1955 – Harold Walmsley, butcher. He bought the business in 1947.
There was living accommodation at the shop, accessed at the rear, by
means of a gate at the side of No.35.

Niche – 33 Bridge Street
Built prior to 1851. This was Noah Walsh’s toy and sweet
shop, with the back part being used as a barber’s
establishment. Noah and his son Lot were the ‘village’
barbers for many years. The walls of the hairdressing salon
were covered with circus posters and it was here that some of
the local men used to gather for a chat or a game of draughts
or dominoes.

shop as the U.C.P. tripe shop in the 1920s and the first shop in
Ramsbottom to sell ‘Hollands Pies’

1871 – Peter Wood, watch & clock dealer and general dealer. Clocks
of all shapes and sizes adorned the walls but apparently no
two clocks told the same time!
1924 – Haworth’s Grocery Store run by Hyrum Haworth and later
by Jim and Alice Aspin.

Oswald Nickson’s was one of the classier cafes, catering for
commercial staff rather than millworkers
Grade 2 listed building. Built c. 1850 – this block was
described as ‘8 cottages’, which became shops later

Originally the drapery establishment of Miss Stead. She lived with
her brother William in a cottage next door and later married a Mr
Roberts – the house and shop were then joined together

In 1871 Abraham Wood, clock maker lived with his wife and
children at 57 Stubbins Lane, Ramsbottom. By 1881 he was a
widower and had moved to 55 Bridge Street together with his
daughter Margaret E. Wood age 24 and his son Abraham Wood age
20, also a watchmaker. After his father’s death in the autumn of
1891, Abraham junior carried on the family business at 55 Bridge
Street until well into the 20th century.

No: 58 Built c. 1850, when it was Ebenezer Alston’s grocery store. Later Edwin
Davy started a tailor’s business here. The rooms above were used as a Liberal
Club. After Davy left, Richard Barlow took over, followed by his son.

Arthur Low built 72-78 Bridge Street in 1834, on the site of
The Old Ground’s joiner’ shop.
At the side of the building outside, was a large door on the
upper floor, with a hoist which lifted the heavy goods to the
storage rooms. The front upper room was used for weighing
flour, tea, rice, sage, dried fruits and sugar into various
quantities.

had a shop on the opposite side of the road, run by his wife.
