A LIVING LEGEND – JIM BISS OF BRUNDALL

The 2003 racing season was another exceptional one for Jim Biss at his Brundall lofts. The past few years had not been the best for him,
from a personal health point of view. He underwent major surgery during 2002 and health problems had dogged him. However, he
continued to race his beloved pigeons and successes were gained and yet more records set. In the BICC National from Marseilles, a
distance of 668 miles, 1st position was won for the 15th time. In the NFC Grand National event, which should have been from Pau but
was eventually flown from Saintes, he won 1st Section for the 11th consecutive year, plus 5th Open, along with other positions. Six
entries were sent to the Barcelona National, a distance of 778 miles, 2nd National was won and all six entries homed. These were some
wonderful achievements of which anyone would be proud.
It had been my pleasure to have known Jim for many years. In those early days he was a member of Waltham Cross Club and was
winning Club, Federation and Combine then. I think a lot of us heaved a sigh of relief when he moved to Norfolk. It was in those early
days in Norfolk that he decided on the introduction of the Dordin family of pigeons, the highlight of which was the introduction of Scout,
the International winner from San Sebastian for Pierre Dordin. However, unbeknown to many, Jim harboured ambitions to produce a
family of pigons that would do consistently well in 500-, 600- and 700-mile races. Geographically, Norfolk is not well situated when it
comes to competing in National events and it was going to require some special pigeons. With this in mind, he set about purchasing
some of the best long-distance winners he possibly could. Among those purchases were the 1,000-mile winners, Tam’s Delight, The
Conqueror and Lionheart. Six Palamos National winners were purchased, among them Knightsdale Lady and The Berwick Hen. More
were to follow. I attended the late Trueman Dicken dispersal sale on Jim’s behalf and purchased two of the finest racing and breeding
cocks in Trueman’s loft, namely Bartholomew and Amigo.
No doubt many will remember the outstanding performances of Sam & Roly Fear of Clandown during the 1979 season. They won all
three long-distance National races in England, on the south route, a feat that was truly remarkable. Those performances were 1st
National Barcelona, 1st National Palamos, 2nd National Barcelona and, of course, 1st Open NFC Pau. Once again I negotiated the
purchase of Herman, 1st Barcelona and 1st Palamos, and Hermano, 2nd Barcelona, for Jim. These were followed by the purchase of Black
Velvet and The International at John Woodford’s dispersal sale, which I attended on Jim’s behalf. Other fine pigeons were to follow,
among them some of the best of the legendary Julien Matthys. Upon the death of Julien, the master of Barcelona, Jim purchased his two
great racing cocks, Napoleon and The Bear, along with a son of each. Added to these were Julien Matthys’s seven best breeding hens,
Vale Jamin, Vale Mulder, Sister Bear, Vale Cesar, Blue Pursang, Blue Matthys and Mealy Matthys. Julien Matthys was the undisputed
long-distance champion of Belgium, who produced his family over many years and became a legend in his own lifetime.
Of course it didn’t end there. Other birds were introduced, among them Favori, Red Perpignan and Crack Perpignan. It should be
remembered that all these purchases over the years were made with one burning ambition in mind – to produce a consistent
winning family of long-distance pigeons. I think it can safely be said that Jim Biss did that and, like Julien Matthys, became a legend in
his own lifetime.
No doubt many will be familiar with the Jim Biss maxim: ‘Capture as many winning genes in a pedigree as possible.’ By doing that you will
produce winning pigeons. He was also of the opinion that these long-distance pigeons that can compete from these events at relatively
fast speeds would also make excellent short-distance racers if always kept at the short distances but, as he said, you can’t burn the candle
at both ends; ultimately you have to decide in which events you seriously want to compete.
No doubt many know that Jim had some very strong views about young birds and young bird racing. One thing was absolutely certain,
you would find neither the darkness system nor early breeding at Hillside and when it came to the young bird season, the so-called races
were treated as training for racing in future years.
Jim’s thoughts on breeding are well known. By obtaining the best stock, one greatly increases the chances of breeding more really good
racers, which will stand up to the rigours of top competitions. The more winners to be found in the family of birds selected to breed
from, then the chances of their producing more and more good ones is increased. This was, of course, what Jim had in mind over the
years when he was purchasing those champions, increasing the winning genes within the pool available at Hillside. His advice was always:
If you cannot obtain the actual champions, the next-best choice is a carefully selected number of their children of grandchildren. He said
that it was important to stress again that strain, colour and size mean absolutely nothing; the most important thing is winning genes.
Without those important winning genes a fancier will go nowhere except to continually produce a bunch of homers.
I could go on writing about the thoughts, methods and ideas of Jim Biss, enough to fill this publication. However, just remember what he
always preached: ‘Keep it simple and trap as many winning genes as possible.’
