FROM THE CEO The Lucky Resort… T his last week, I attended a symposium of sorts at Mt. Buller that tackled the challenges facing tourism, the environment, planning and managing Alpine Resorts. I attended the event as a guest of Biosis. Biosis are ecology and cultural heritage consultants that Resort Management has engaged over the years to provide guidance and information, as well as to assist in navigating the ever changing and highly complicated legislative landscape. Biosis were a major sponsor of the forum. What became very apparent throughout the two days of presentations, discussions and ‘relationship building’ was that Falls Creek is uniquely placed and very well positioned to embrace the changing ‘experience’ being sought by the modern tourist and resort user, as well as the environmental, planning and policy initiatives that come with the territory of being a Crown Land manager. Falls Creek, in the context of slope aspect and positioning is blessed with topography that faces South (for the majority of runs), hence has a natural advantage regards snow retention and run longevity. Furthermore, with precipitation levels in excess of the other resorts, under the right conditions, Falls Creek captures and retains more natural snow fall on slope and recycles the associated run off from the melt better than any current Australian resort. The latter is done via an aqueduct network which multi-tasks as XC trails in winter, running/walking tracks as well as MTB networks in summer (and the occasional trout fishing spot too!). Hence, by definition, the resort is the personification of sustainability and responsible management of scarce resources, via ‘recycling’ or multi-tasking - that other resorts want to be. The Rocky Valley Dam and the association with AGL regards supplemental use of the water resource for snow making purposes (and Summer water sports) is the envy of every resort in the country (given the current lengths other resorts are going to, to secure water storage/snow making facilities). Furthermore, the dam is a key strategic point of difference when evaluating where and why any investment or funding in the Victorian alpine region should be undertaken or prioritised. Falls Creek can clearly demonstrate the ability to provide a sustainable and unmatched long term offering, with access to and responsible use of scarce resourcing for its winter product offering. Furthermore, the unique alpine village provides a sense of place, community and a built environ that synchronises with the natural surrounds unlike any of our local peers and is activated across all seasons. To further cement our position as the best alpine resort in Australia (note I’m biased!), we are also the gateway to the Bogong High Plains and the Alpine National Park. The splendour, natural beauty and uniqueness the high plains offer for those seeking a true ‘nature based’ experience is unparalleled. For those reading who haven’t visited us in Summer… I ask - why? For a start it’s cooler up here, whilst you’re sweltering in the lowlands, we are on average about 10 degrees cooler …and, as we say… “every night is a doona night at Falls Creek” and there are plenty of things for the entire family to do that can pack out a long weekend or more. Need an excuse, check out the Summer events calendar, pick a date, or just come up for a ‘serenity’ break. Don’t forget to schedule in time to enjoy the drive through some of the amazing valleys, experience the food, the wine, the beer, the overall hospitality of what the region and surrounding towns have to offer. At the forum, much was discussed about ‘facilitated’ experiences. At Falls Creek we’ve embraced this in so many aspects Be part of the team! We are getting very excited about the prospect of the Falls to Hotham Crossing. This will be a joint initiative with Parks Vic and see options to cross between both resorts via a selection of tracks that offer hikers various options from single, two or three day treks with different levels of exertion and taking in the huts, camping platforms, creeks, peaks and valleys that are the Bogong High Plains. It’s Up to You I t is great to see a line of people at the bottom of Falls Express before 8:30am. They’re keen, and many of them keep going until close. Let’s face it; skiing and boarding are fabulous sports. To be able to spend up to eight hours enjoying your exercise, with like-minded people, in a pristine environment, breathing in crystal clear air (at altitude - which is good for your lungs) and when you do pull up for a breather, you have some of the most magnificent scenery this country has to offer. Now, can it get any better than that? Many do not believe it can get any better, but we can add to the overall experience that is the total Falls Creek package. All this fantastic snow on the ground makes the extracurricular activities so much more enjoyable. Gateway Café & Bar …renowned for quality all day food “Take me home for dinner” Even walking to and from one of the many great restaurants is a simple pleasure. Steve, with his talented side-kick, Bond, aaah Steve Bond, will take you skiing in places you thought no-one should go - like the south face of Mt McKay - and it’s all here in Falls Creek. • Selection from our display cabinet to include curries, stir fries, soups, salads desserts - priced to please! located 1 BHP Road at the base of the gully chairlift shuttle ‘til 5:30pm daily to our door Gully Chairlift ‘til 5pm Ph: 03 5758 3646 Service & Demo Centre One Day Adult Hire: Great Value Quality Rental Free Delivery to Accomodation Open Daily 8:00am to 5:30pm Friday & Sunday 8:00am to 8:00pm Falls Creek’s ONLY Dedicated snowboard store - Stocking all the brands Burton, Nitro, Capita, 3CS, Analog, Union, Afends, Dragon & Radical Gloves! He did not set up the first ski tows or lifts; he did not operate a commercial lodge; nor was he a ski instructor. Nevertheless Tom Mitchell played a significant role in the development of the village and is deserving of recognition for the role he played, if not as a ‘founding father’ but as a guiding ‘godfather.’ The Mitchell family were among the early settlers in the Upper Murray area and it was at the family property Towong Hill that Thomas Walter Mitchell was born in 1906. Tom Mitchell first learned to ski on a family holiday at Klosters in Switzerland when he was seven years old. It was fourteen years later while studying law at Cambridge University that he developed his passion for skiing. In the 1930’s he was four time Australian champion in slalom, twice in downhill events and four times combined champion. On a number of occasions he captained the Australian team in inter-dominion competitions with New Zealand. He made a strong impression when he won the 1932 NZ national championships on Mt Ruapehu, “his high standard of skiing an inspiration to the local skiers, demonstrating techniques not previously seen on the mountain.” In 1937 Tom published Ski Heil, the first Australian handbook on skiing technique. The same year he was instrumental in establishing the Australian National Ski Federation. Tom Mitchell married in 1935 and taught his wife Elyne to ski. She, too, became a champion - winning the Canadian downhill championships in 1938. However it was as an author that she is most remembered, especially for her ‘Silver Brumby’ series for children set in the Snowy Mountains. At the outbreak of World War II Mitchell joined the AIF. After the fall of Singapore he became a prisoner of war; one of the founding members of the ‘Changi Ski Club’. Interest in skiing had not diminished during the war Tony St Elmo and Tom Mitchell ski out across Bakers Spur to plant a flag on Mt Hillary in 1953, north of Mt Nelse, and which now seems to have been lost off the map. Pic - The St Elmo Collection. years; in fact membership of the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) had grown from 459 members in 1940 to 1,000 by 1945. Of this number 200 were serving in the Armed Forces. The November 1945 edition of the SCV’s magazine, Schuss, included an article about the Changi A.I.F. Ski Club of which “Capt T.W Mitchell, with his usual enthusiasm for all skiing affairs, was president.” At a meeting of the club on 5th February, 1943, the subject was about “increasing and improving accommodation and conditions in the snow areas of Australia.” Mitchell led the discussion proposing the development of alpine villages, suggesting that ski clubs should adopt one particular resort and spend their energy in developing that particular resort.” Afternoon ENTERTAINMENT Open 5pm Daily Evening Meals Take-away Fish & Chips Tasty Individual Pies Early Sitting 6 or 6:30pm Late Sitting 8 or 8:30pm ‘Harvey Hour’ Tuesday 23rd August Thursday 25th August 3:30pm - 4:30pm He blew them away in July- and he’s back! His passion for skiing had not waned, nor had his vision for the development of alpine villages. In her memoirs, Skippy St Elmo writes about Mitchell’s visits to Falls Creek and the discussions held about the potential for the area to develop as a ski resort. By this time the members of two ski clubs, Bogong Ski Club and the newly formed small Skyline Club, had become enthusiastic about ski racing and joined the North Eastern District Skiing Association (N.E.D.S.A). In 1948 Mitchell organised a bus trip for the other member ski clubs (from Albury, Bright, Myrtleford, Wangaratta and Beechworth, Tallangatta and Benalla) to visit Falls Creek. Shortly thereafter Albury applied to build a club lodge followed by Myrtleford. During his time as a politician (1947 to 1976), and as Victorian Attorney General (1950-52) Mitchell was able to have a direct influence on the development of Falls Creek. Indeed, he was instrumental in the easing of barriers placed by the SEC powers-that-be on accessing the ski fields, be it on receiving permits to build lodges or permits to use the road. By 1951 the village as had been envisioned by Mitchell as a POW was taking shape. He too had committed to building a small Dawn Ski Club lodge with Dale Crooke. (Dawn Ski Falls Creek Village Map 1951 from Ski-Horizon of June 1951. Mitchell continued to encourage and support the trans-Tasman ski competitions and in the early 1950’s visits by local clubs became more commonplace. In 1953 a team from New Zealand visited Falls Creek for the first time. This was some months after Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed as having reached the summit of Mount Everest. Aware of this, Tom Mitchell and Toni St Elmo had proposed that an unnamed mountain to the north of Mt Nelse be named A young Tom Mitchell preparing to load the rope tow beside the Nissen Ski School. This skinny ski action takes place under lights at the bottom of the Summit, outside the Frying Pan Inn in the Village Bowl at 7pm on Thursday 25th August. The event has now become something of a tradition, just like the 26th running of the Kangaroo Hoppet the Night Sprints support. The Night Sprints feature international athletes who are in town for the Hoppet, up against best of our Australian Team athletes, giving a great preview of who is in form for the main event. You will also see a few of our up and coming local skiers as several of our he 26th Kangaroo Hoppet is a tremendous celebration, not just because it is Australia’s largest annual international snowsports event, nor because it brings together people from all around the world, nor because the three events staged on the day cater to elite and the not so elite athletes… but because it unites a fraternity of skiers, includes the opportunity to challenge yourself, or simply have a bit of fun with mates and family… but then the event also showcases Australia’s premier cross country mountain. Events of this scale require an enormous amount of preparation and hard work, from the teams of dedicated people, most, if not all, volunteering because of their passion for the sport and their long term connection with the event’s outstanding success, to the volunteers on course and those who support the event’s management on the day. A large pool of even elite skiers in both the men’s and women’s events will provide for great spectacle for spectators and competitors alike. The women’s field shapes as a contest between North America and Australia. Mary Rose and Deedra Irwin from the US have been training in Falls for the past three weeks and will have good form following lead up races. Rose is a strong skater and has proven results in the US and Europe and shapes to be the one to beat. Irwin, highly regarded as a sprinter, but also winner of the 55km US Birkebeiner Classic in 2016 has shown that she can also win over long distances. Brooke Darlington, formerly of the Canadian Ski Team, and 2011 world championship representative, has been training consistently in 2016 and will use her considerable experience to be among the contenders for the podium. On the Australian front there are a number of skiers that will feature amongst the international skiers. Sochi Olympian and national team veteran, Aimee Watson, has the proven results over a long distance. Local favourite and triple Olympian Esther Bottomley has two previous Hoppet titles and will provide strong competition in the field. Up and coming Australian athletes Kat Paul and Ellie Phillips, 1st and 3rd respectively in the 21km Australian Birkebeiner last year, have a great chance to podium as they step up to the 42km if they can remain in contention during the tough middle kilometres. Paul, the national sprint champion has the sprint speed to cause trouble for competitors with ambition for the podium at the finish. Eventual third place-getter Phil Bellingham leads women’s winner Maria Greafnings (SWE) over the dam wall heading towards the finish. Pic - Ken Bell. Last year’s ladies Birkebeiner podium, Ellie Phillips (3rd), Kat Paul (1st) and Gabrielle Hawkins (2nd). Pic - Ken Bell. In the men’s field there will be strong international and domestic contention. Matt Gelso from the US will combine with a strong contingent from Estonia to try to make an international clean sweep. Gelso is very versatile and has been one of the top US skiers in recent years. Strong form at the 2015 world championships in Sweden indicate that he can mix it in elite fields. Estonians, Vahur Teppan, 4th in the 2014 Hoppet and 10th in the Tartu Marathon in 2016, and Eilo Siim shape as very strong contenders after spending a winter in Australia. Teppan in particular will be one to watch for all by all the competitors if they want to remain at the front. Local contenders are a fantastic mix of the young and more experienced (old). Sochi Olympian, Phillip Bellingham, 3rd in 2016, will always be in the mix. A strong all round skier and outstanding sprinter Bellingham has the all-round credentials to manage every aspect of the race. However, his ability to find form after spending much of the 2016 season injured will be critical for a top result. Olympians Ben Sim, Anthony Evans and Cameron Morton have all shown strong form this season and will use their vast Hoppet experience to manage packs and pace through the event. Sim won the Australian 15km championship a few weeks ago and will be looking to win his 5th Hoppet which would be a competition record. Lots of focus will be on the exciting crop of up-and-coming athletes that will be looking to top the field. Nick Montgomery, 4th in 2016, is a proven long distance skater and has a raft of strong results from Worldloppet events in Europe. Mark Pollock, the recently crowned Australian sprint champion, is very versatile and has the ability to stay with packs when the going gets tough. Damon Morton, winner of the 2014/15 Australian Birkebeiner, will be looking to make historic family sweep with his father Cameron. Morton has shown outstanding speed and will be threatening in the final stages. Event organisers are anticipating a very close race that will provide spectators and participants with a great XC skiing spectacle. The Alpine Valleys wine region takes in the Kiewa, Ovens, Buckland and Buffalo River Valleys, while the adjoining King River Valley to the west is a region in its own right. The cool nights and the reliable natural rainfall of the alpine valleys combine with the warm days from being north of the Great Dividing Range to reduce transpiration rates, creating ideal ripening conditions that maximise the natural sugars, esters and acids in the grapes leading to intense fruit flavours. The Hoppet Dozen, available only from the Kangaroo Hoppet Race Office in Mount Beauty, provides skiers with a unique chance to sample wines from five regional wineries with the aim of increasing awareness of local wines and encouraging skiers and their friends to visit the cellar doors and sample the full range of wines on offer, either on the way home from the Hoppet, or on their next trip to the region. Two of this year’s wines will not be familiar to a lot of people. Fiano is a classical white wine from southern Italy, especially Campagnia and Sicily, that has its origins in Roman times, while for those younger folk who were not drinking wine in the 70’s and 80’s, Fume Blanc is a sauvignon blanc that has had some time in oak. The name was made up in California in 1968 as a marketing plan to increase the popularity of sauvignon blanc. This year’s list is one to behold. As usual, the shop will offer lots of specials on the thermal and compression products that are so popular with skiers and winter athletes. “We are pleased to have 2XU continue their support for the event,” said Hoppet Chairman Allan Marsland, “not only for The Hoppet Dozen is all about value and the virtue of good wine. As well as the popular thermal compression tights and long sleeved tops that come in both men’s and women’s styles, this year sees a new addition to their compression sock range, the 24/7 Compression Sock. Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK Winter 2015 Edition ELEVEN 13 CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Ski de Femme W ith over one hundred active and ready women heading up to the bowl on Saturday morning, the cross-country ski spirit and girl power was once again booming. The 2016 Ski de Femme is an event proudly organised by the Birkie Ski Club, initiated to encourage women’s participation in skiing. The free event involved a two-hour clinic hosted by national team and international coaches before a participation race with distance options of 1km, 2.5km and 5km. Ski de Femme was lucky enough to have the girls from the Sun Valley Gold Team direct from the US to assist Australian National Team members in coaching duties. Before the race ladies worked on both skate and classic technique, improving their downhill skills and balance work especially to be prepared for the race. After the clinic everyone was treated to scones and tea provided by the Birkie Ski Club and delicious brownies provided the event partner, Brazen Brownies. With a sugar fix under their belts, the race was set to begin, a race that was a first time experience for many. Beautiful conditions and well-set tracks meant that all competitors were guaranteed some great racing. These races were organised by our fabulous Birkie Ski Club and saw competitors complete a 7.5km or 15km classic racecourse around Sun Valley. Race organisers decided that the Sun Valley loops was in better condition than the normal ‘Rocky Valley Rush’ course so the 15km racers enjoyed a ‘double Sun Valley Ramble’ experience. In the Sun Valley Ramble (one 7.5km loop) Kat Paul took out the women’s category with an impressive race. Freya Clarke skied into second place and Brianna Oldis finished in 3rd. In the men’s category Will Middlemiss claimed the win, an impressive result from the 16 year old. Warren Sanders finished in second with Tommi Silverster finishing third. Jo is currently undergoing her fifth winter as the Marketing and Communicationa Manager at Falls Creek and loves to get out on her xc skis. As a keen mountain biker and runner during the summer months, Jo describes cross-country skiing as a great way to get a cardio workout without being stuck in the gym on a treadmill. Our team at DWA really look forward to this week every year. It’s the only camp where all of the Program Staff have a chance to get together! It’s great to get some of the Victorian and NSW participants together as well. Race Week is a social ski week where athletes from DWA and Special Olympics Australia (SOA) get together to train and race on multiple styles of courses. Skiers and sit skiers compete on Slalom, Giant Slalom and Skier Cross and Snowboarders compete in Parallel Giant Slalom and Boarder Cross. The opening night saw the Parallel Giant Slalom run for the snowboarders on the Perisher Front Valley. This is a great spectacle as it is run under lights. The boarder’s race head to head in a knockout format under the eight-seater chair on Front Valley. It makes for an awesome atmosphere riding up the chairlift as the racers race down underneath you, with all the military crew cheering and shouting as people leave the start gate. Toby Gluth - who was riding with us last year - was back although he had some stiff competition from the SOA Snowboarders this year! In the final Toby was racing against Craig Muhlbock - they were neck and neck down the course, and were so close when they crossed the line that most of the crowd (from where we were standing) thought that Toby had won, though upon receiving the official timing Craig had edged him out by .23 of a second. It’s great to see a bit of healthy competition between the athletes! The SOA crew that are here for the Clean & Comfortable! His suicide left family and friends in deep grief and with endless questions. In 2009, his son Gavin Larkin chose to champion just one question to honour his father and to try and protect other families from the pain his endured… “Are you OK?” While collaborating with Janina Nearn on a documentary to raise awareness, the team quickly realised the documentary alone wouldn’t be enough. To genuinely change behaviour Australiawide, a national campaign was needed. From this realisation, and with Gavin and Janina’s expertise and passion, R U OK? was born. Gavin remained a passionate champion of the fact a conversation could change a life, even as cancer ended his in 2011. His and Janina’s legacy is ensuring all Australians realise a little question can make a big difference to those people struggling with life: “Are you OK? Our team here at the Mount Beauty Community Bank Branch of the Bendigo Bank has a pretty good feel for the community and the branch has done exceptional work for the community since inception in 2007 (having returned nearly half a million dollars back to the community). Recently the R U OK? Day came to their attention so the team thought they would like to do something about it! A poster has been prepared and little donation ‘Piggy’s have been placed strategically around town – to provide an opportunity for folks top drop in their loose change and help a great cause. Other venues may become involved as momentum grows. The bank team are also having a BBQ on R U OK day the 8th of September and they encourage people to pop down to say hello and get involved to raise money for such a good cause.
