PKD FEST FAQ: Q: Where, exactly, will the festival be held? A: In the Humanities building located on the main campus of San Francisco State University, (South West quadrant on the Campus map on a following page). 1600 Holloway Ave San Francisco CA 94131 The Humanities Building (which is quite a bit down campus from Holloway Ave) is located on Tapia Drive. I have reserved a large auditorium (HUM 133) as well as two large lecture halls where we will be meeting. There will also be a room with books for sale and some art displays. We will have signs up around campus directing you to the fest. [we need a campus map, a map of the humanities building, and a map of the surrounding parking on Tapia, etc] Q: How will I get to the festival ? A: You can drive (there will be ample, free parking), take public transportation, or arrive by taxi. You can find directions for all of the above at this link, and on a following page: http://www.sfsu.edu/~parking/directions/ Q: What about food? A: We will also be providing free, bottomless coffee, and tea. On Saturday there will be a few places open on campus for lunch, serving sandwiches, pasta, salads, etc. On Sunday fewer places will be open. You can find a list of all on-campus food here: http://www.yelp.com/list/sfsu-eats-sanfrancisco You are,of course, free to bring your own lunches. There will be a sit-down dinner on Saturday night. Sunday’s dinner will be more casual: pizza and salads. We hope to serve alcohol on both nights. A: What else is there to do? Q: Despite its name San Francisco State University sits on the southern border of the city, far from the bustle of downtown. So there is very little in the way of restaurants and stores in the immediate area (other than the nearby Stonestown shopping mall). But SFSU has a very nice campus that you are encouraged to explore, and there will be lots of places where Dick-heads can congregate away from the presentations. Q: So, there will be, like, more than one presentation going at the same time? A: At times there will be two lectures going on simultaneously, and you will have to choose which to attend. While this will involve some hard choices, we will be recording all of the presentations so there will be, at some future point, a chance to watch the presentations you missed. Q: Are there any rules? A: Just the usual ones: • Smoking only in designated areas (you can be fined for smoking in restricted areas). See map for list of designated smoking sections. • No illegal drugs on campus. • Clean up after yourself. Q: What time will the festival end? A: We have access to the theater and facilities until midnight on Saturday the 22nd. We need to be done by 10pm on Sunday. Of course there are always bars to be visited after hours. Q: Should I bring anything? A: It’s up to you: snacks, favorite PKD books, anything you want signed, money for our book sale, pen and paper. Q: What will the weather be like? A: Cold, most likely. SFSU’s proximity to the ocean causes a unique micro climate. Most days are overcast and chilly. There’s always the chance the sun will peek out, so wear a t-shirt underneath your sweater. Q: What about this Berkeley walk? A: On the Friday before the fest (Sept 21) we’ll be walking Dick’s old neighborhood in Berkeley. We need time and distance totals... Q: If I’m flying into SFO, how should I get to my hotel and the fest? A: It’s possible to take Bay Area Rapid Transit, or BART train from SFO to the Daly City BART station where you can catch a number of buses to take you to SFSU or your lodgings. There are also taxis stationed here. There’s also American Airport Shuttle 415-202-0733. $17 for first passenger. Directions to Campus: Humanities Building (Map grid: G-4) Directions by BART Take any San Francisco-bound BART train to the Daly City Station.
