LIFELINE ROMANIA
WITH CHESTERFORDS AID
We are now busy packing and preparing for
our Spring trip. No date yet, but before the
trip we will be packing the “Family Bags” bags for specific known families within the
churches we help in Romania - on Saturday
16th March.
In an effort to raise much needed funds, we
will be having a Coffee Morning at The
Garden Room in Saffron Walden on
Saturday 18th May and also, in the Spring,
we will be starting to go to regular car boot
sales on Saturdays at Oakington. We will be
going to Bunwell, Norfolk in March to
collect the goods so kindly donated and
collected by the ladies there. They have
always provided us with a very useful and
full van load of goods whenever we make
the journey there.
We would like sincerely to thank St Mary’s,
Little Chesterford, for donating the proceeds
Park Vehicle
Services
from their Christmas Carol Service and also
to thank those who left stationery under the
Christmas trees in All Saints and St Marys.
Thanks also to everyone who continues to
offer goods for our cause. We will try and
come as quickly as possible to collect
goods, but there is never enough time in the
day so please bear with us if we can’t collect
as soon as you would wish.
Our recycling bank is still in the
Community Centre car park. You can
deposit old clothes, shoes, etc. which will
then be recycled and we will receive any
profits. We do stress, though, that good
clothes and shoes are still very much needed in Romania and this facility is really for
older, worn shoes and clothes that would not
be suitable for Romania, so if you have any
doubt please ring David Maskell (530098)
or Anne Kirkwood (530744) who will be
happy to discuss this with you.

GREAT CHESTERFORD
BOWLS CLUB
The Club’s annual Trophy Presentation
Dinner at Saffron Walden Golf Club in
October was very well supported by
members, Vice Presidents and friends. An
excellent carvery meal was enjoyed by all.
At the AGM in November John Pashley
stood down as Chairman, a role he has
carried out with considerable enthusiasm
and an awful lot of hard work for more than
10 years. He will be a very tough act to
follow by the incoming Chairman, Martyn
Linwood. December saw the Club’s annual
Christmas dinner, as in recent years again at
the Crown & Thistle, a perfect venue with a
very good meal.
Many in the Chesterfords will be aware that
the Club have obtained planning permission
to replace the present clubhouse (originally
a site hut when the M11 was constructed)
with a new purpose built timber pavilion.
Grants totalling £15,500 have been secured
and originally it was hoped to commence
and complete the project before the start of
the new season in April. However, the
inclement weather and the need to raise
additional funds have led to the decision to
postpone work until this September when
the season draws to a close. Speaking of the
weather, the bowls green has suffered a lot
over the winter with a lot of moss. Our
greenkeeper Colin Brand and his dedicated
team of helpers will be working hard
between now and April to ensure that the
green is restored to its usual pristine
condition ready for action in the forthcoming season.
Our Club is very friendly and anyone who
would like to consider taking up bowls in
2013 is very welcome to contact Martyn
Linwood on 501419 for more information.
The Club will be holding a Quiz Night in
the Chesterfords Community Centre at
7.30 pm on Saturday 23rd March. Two
years ago this event proved extremely
popular and we hope that as many people as
possible will come along again. More details
will be provided nearer the time.
Details of our open day will appear in the
next issue.

The current course is of particular relevance to
this area with its rich evidence of Roman
occupation. Our tutor is looking
forward to drawing in local knowledge for his
course.
Boudica’s Revolt and Resistance to
Roman Rule in Britain
Tutor Richard Till (10 weeks)
Why did some Britons oppose Roman rule?
How successful was their opposition in the
period 42-70 AD? What’s the evidence?
How much of it can we trust?
Wednesday mornings from 9th January
at 10 am
Ickleton Village Hall
Richard attended our AGM and gave us a
lively talk with examples of questions to
address and evidence to assess in order to
understand ways of life in those times. We
can look forward to plenty of discussion,
through not always easy answers. There will
be plenty of puzzles to consider.
The first two sessions of both courses may
be sampled for £4.50 each, to be set against
the fee of £45 if continuing. Courses are free
to those on certain benefits. We are able to
offer lifts between villages.

In school we spend a lot of time thinking of others less fortunate than ourselves.
Our thoughts and prayers have been with many, including those affected by illness
and flooding and the homeless. We have supported several charities this year with
whole school fund raising events for Children in Need, UNICEF and Jimmy’s
Nightshelter. Last term we had a specific focus on Friendship when a proportion of
the week was spent considering anti-bullying issues and the qualities of good
friends. The children enjoyed working in their mixed age friendship groups completing craft activities and taking part in games organised by the school Playleaders.
Lots of fun was had during the board game sessions kindly supported by many of
our parents. Years 5 and 6 prepared and performed a thoughtful presentation on the
issues of bullying through drama and poetry. The week culminated with a special
sharing assembly when parents were able to see and hear about the work carried
out. Class 5 produced an excellent range of performance poems which they proudly
shared with the rest of the school and we hope you enjoy the examples below:
Bully Stop!
Bully I feel sorry for you,
Why do you do the things you do?
You pinch, punch and call me names
It’s a wonder I haven’t gone insane!
Hey! Ow! Why don’t you stop?
Since you started my spirits have
dropped,
How does this benefit you?
Tell me why you’re so bad and cruel,
You even do it in the swimming pool.
Are you having a bad day?
Just show it in a different way.
So I just want to say
STOP ruining my day!
By Connor Gardiner
Big Bad Bob
Some bullies are short,
Some bullies are tall,
Some bullies are huge,
Some bullies are small.
My bully’s called Bob,
He looks like a baboon.
When he makes me cry,
He goes over the moon!
Bullies are naughty,
Bullies make me sad.
Bullies pull your hair,
And make you go mad.
So PLEASE listen teacher,
Sorry I don’t know your name,
But a big bad bully called Bob,
Came and ruined our game AGAIN!

GREAT CHESTERFORD
Carol Singing
Many thanks to all those who came out to
sing round the village the week before
Christmas. £355 was raised for All Saints’
Organ Fund (this in spite of a rather curtailed final evening due to the teeming rain.
We are not often deterred by the weather but
Wednesday 19th December was extreme!)
Many thanks to those who gave so generously. We are especially grateful as we have
just heard that the organ requires a major
overhaul and expensive releathering of the
bellows which together will cost about twice
as much as we have in the organ kitty.
Services at Christmas
It was wonderful to have the church so full
for our Christmas services.
The Carol Service on 16th December,
Christingle on 23rd, Midnight Communion
on Christmas Eve and the Family
Communion Service on Christmas Day were
all extremely well attended.
We also had a very special occasion on the
morning of 16th December when the Bishop
of Colchester came to celebrate Family
Communion and dedicate the Church Room,
the new Memorial Wall, the area of the
churchyard set aside for the interment of
ashes and the noticeboard that had been
given in memory of David and Sally
Burnett-Stuart.

At December's meeting the speaker, Rodney
Tibbs, gave a talk entitled 'Cambridge
College Gardens'. An accomplished author
and journalist, he inspired his audience to
explore the hidden gems set within five
minutes' walk of the Market Square.
Following the seasons, his slides and
anecdotes were sprinkled with architectural
detail and historical fact, and he opened
everyone's eyes to the delightful open spaces tucked away in the city centre.
A seasonal raffle and mince pies followed.

any additional subscribers. A waiting-list of those interested in obtaining
Lifeline in the future with the assistance of the Charities has been
established by the Trustees, and they will always give sympathetic
consideration to every new application to determine whether, exceptionally, a case of particular “need, hardship or distress” is established
Any queries about the Lifeline scheme, or any other issue arising from
“need, hardship or distress” about which the Charities might be able to
assist, should, as always, be referred to the Chairman of the Trustees,
Val Cook (telephone 530517) or to the Secretary, Anne Wood
(telephone 530888)

THANKS
Val Hunt writes:
I would like to thank everyone involved since
my fall in October:
the very kind ladies who provided cushions
and support while waiting for the ambulance;
the many cards, letters, phone calls, visits to
the hospital and at home;
the neighbours and friends for their ongoing
help and support without which I would not
be where I am now;
lastly the love and support of my family Stephen, Alice and Maggie, Christine, Tim
and Hayley.
Thank you all - Happy New Year

COLLECTION OF STAMPS
Jean King writes:
My thanks to everyone who has delivered
used stamps to me during the last six months.
I have been unable to find an address for the
Phoenix School for which the stamps were
originally collected. I will now be collecting
them for Great Ormond Street Hospital
which helps children in need of specialist
expertise. Stamps already received will be
sent to this hospital.
I hope I can count on your continued support.
Thank you.
