The writers and artists at EC comics fought a subversive war against the dominant culture in comics such as Tales From The Crypt and Weird Science. They rebuked racists and warmongers, critiqued the paranoid state, and challenged the patriarchal vision of matrimonial bliss with tales of jealousy, hypocrisy, and murder. Yes, their comics were often blatantly sensationalistic and violent, but they had a sense of irony, too — even launching a title called Mad in 1952 that parodied the sanitized pop culture of the era with merciless accuracy. Some of the most talented artists in the history of American comics cut their teeth at EC: Wallace Wood, whose rocket ships, starscapes, and beautiful alien women shaped the imaginations of George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg; Johnny Craig, whose storytelling skills influenced a generation of subsequent creators; Graham Ingels, whose ghastly drawings fascinated later masters of horror such as Stephen King and George Romero; and Harvey Kurtzman, the founder of Mad, and perhaps one of the greatest American satirists of the 20th century. Join Professor Ben Saunders and an all-star panel of contemporary creators for a deep dive into the pop culture archive, and rediscover the comics that parents once burned and politicians tried to ban. With Matt Brundage (Art-Ops), Gary Groth (Fantagraphics publisher), Joe Keatinge (Glory, Shutter), Susan Kirtley (Girlhood Through The Looking Glass), and Bill Schelly (Harvey Kurtzman: The Man Who Created Mad). Speakers: Ben Saunders Gary Groth Joe Keatinge Bill Schelly Susan Kirtley Matt Brundage Title: The Artists of Destiny Time: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Location: T303 Description: Meet the creators who envision the worlds of Destiny. Some of these stories were forgotten, some suppressed, others were just too freaking weird for the Bible (and that's saying something). In a special advance release for Emerald City, Apocrypha Now is about what the Bible DIDN'T tell you.
