Art (M,W,TH,F) Mrs. Kline - Evanston/Skokie School District 65
Art (M,W,TH,F) Mrs. Kline [email protected] We have been working hard in Art Class this winter! Currently, artists from kindergarten through fifth grade are working on creating art portfolios. Students are learning how artists use portfolios to reflect on their accomplishments and set goals for future projects. Artists are looking forward to bringing their art portfolios home to share with family and friends! Students will continue creating two dimensional art focusing on the elements and principles of design. Students will also experience and explore the physical space of three dimensional art making through the elements and principles of design, while comparing and contrasting two dimensional art marking. Students will learn and study famous three dimensional artists and make connections with art history. Washington Fine Arts and Physical Education Winter 2016 Newsletter YEA (YOUNG EVANSTON ARTIST) Saturday, May 21st Drama (M,W,TH,F) Mrs. Serleth [email protected] The 5th grade Drama Club is rehearsing Sam and the Tigers . Directed by Mrs. Serleth, 43 enthusiastic fifth graders joined the club. The entire cast rehearses on Mondays after school and small groups rehearse each lunch recess. The play will be performed on April 21 with two performances during the school day and one in the evening. Drama is about characters facing conflict and the difficult choices that must be made. As the students step into the thoughts and feelings of the character, they make connections to their own thoughts and feelings. They are walking in the shoes of characters both alike and different from themselves. Through the drama experience, they are developing empathy for others and understanding of themselves. The Brown Detective Agency, under the direction of Mrs. Brown (Mrs. Serleth) is up and running. 4th and 5th graders have taken on the roles of detectives and are investigating their respective cases. These are process dramas and are not based on a story. The case is presented and the ending of the case is determined by student’s imaginations and choices. Students in 4th grade solve the The Case of the Lost Dog. Working in pairs or small groups they look for clues, determine what information is important or unimportant, draw up a list of suspects, interview suspects, and go undercover to rescue the lost dog. 5th graders solve The Case of the Mysterious House. They are asked to spend a night in a rundown mansion to disprove rumors about the house. They tour the house, research its history, draw up floor plans looking for possible secret passages and hidden rooms, and eventually spend a night in the house. Third graders, in conjunction with their homeroom study of Pioneers, have been divided into family groups for Drama. We went back in time to the year 1842, living in log cabins in the Evanston area. Characters were created by each family group determining their ages, relationships, and family backstory. Using social skills, such as cooperation, negotiation, listening, they created family log cabins in the auditorium using drama blocks, cubes, and scarves. Families divided up daily farm chores (cooking, chopping wood, getting water…) and completed those Washington Fine Arts and Physical Education Winter 2016 Newsletter chores during a blizzard. This unit will continue throughout the winter and into spring, with the pioneers deciding to move west to Oregon. Each week they will face a hardship and work as family teams to solve their problems. Students discuss make and make connections about how their lives are alike and different from their pioneer families. The unit will culminate with presentations during third grade Social Studies night. Second graders will also go back in time and explore the ancient Greek story of King Midas and the Golden Touch . They will take on the roles of both King Midas and his young child, as well as the Greek gods watching Midas from Mount Olympus. As the characters they will explore the consequences of Midas’ greed for gold, both his daughter turning to gold and Midas complete aloneness with only his gold to keep him company. Once his daughter is changed back into herself, she wonders what happened to her. Midas doesn’t know if he should tell her the truth, and students take on the role of child experts and give Midas advice as to what to do. Leola and the Honeybears presents first graders as the little girl Leola with a difficult question: Should they enter the Honeybears house and eat their pie, sit in their chairs, and sleep in their beds without being invited? Students working in groups of three debate this question. One child plays Leola, one play the voice in Leola’ head saying, “Eat the pie!” The third child plays the other voice in Leola’s head saying, “Don’t eat the pie!” Leola asks them, “Why?” Students create dialogue using their reasoning skills. Leprechauns are playing trick on the kindergarteners. The class is divided into leprechauns and wee children living with their mother in a tiny house. Those playing leprechauns creep out of their tree house while the children are asleep and put their shoes on the roof, sugar on the floor, feathers in the soup. Students switch roles and more tricks are played. The leprechauns must be caught! Of course, they escape but leave clues as to where a map to the pot of gold can be found. Students interpret the clues, follow the map and a gold coin appears. What to do with it? Library (MF) Ms. Connolly [email protected] First of all, a GREAT BIG thank you to our Washington community in the fantastic fundraising for our READATHON! In addition, many thanks to parent, Mila Goldman for organizing this important event to Washington Fine Arts and Physical Education Winter 2016 Newsletter bring new books to the Washington Library. Many thanks to the Washington teachers and staff who supported the event by hosting a pajama day and lots of reading activities! We are just wrapping up Construction, our second KLEAP unit in Kindergarten. Students have been drawing their houses, adding details, and also using a magnetic slate to make their “plan” for building their building with blocks. Many thanks to the parent helpers who come support these activities. The library is a busy place! In first and second grade we have been reading books focusing on courage and perseverance. One of our first grade books is called, A Dance Like Starlight, by Kristy Dempsey. This follows a little girl’s dream to become a ballerina, although she is not allowed to take lessons at the ballet school where her mother works. Through reading this story, we learned about a little known, but famous ballerina, Janet Collins. In second grade, we read Nelson Mandela, by Kadir Nelson. Students get a glimpse of one man’s perseverance, even though he spent over twenty seven years in prison. Kadir Nelson also illustrated this book, and the illustrations are beautiful. Our focus in third grade is to become familiar with many of the children’s book awards. We just finished reading, Trombone Shorty, by Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. Brian Collier, the illustrator of the book won the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration. A delightful true story about a little boy who is so dedicated to his trombone, he takes it everywhere, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He gets noticed by Bo Diddley who is performing on stage. I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination, or let your child share it with you. We also watched and listened to a couple of Trombone Shorty tunes after reading. Along with reading Trombone Shorty with fourth grade, we’ve had some insightful discussions around the theme of civil rights. We read The Freedom on the Menu:The Greensboro SitIns , by Carol Boston Weatherford. Our discussion included power of sitins, as they began to spread to other cities. We also talked about the risks involved in participating in protests, but the power that many can have to bring attention and to make change. In 5th grade, we spent a few weeks reviewing and discovering new resources that can be used for research. We discussed nonfiction books along with the many online resources we have through District 65 and the Evanston Public Library. We have had important discussions about Washington Fine Arts and Physical Education Winter 2016 Newsletter the vast amounts of information on the internet, and the need as a good researcher to consider what accurate and reliable sources should be used. We spent some time talking about plagiarism is and the importance of citing our sources. Battle of the Books and Desafío de los libros are in full swing! 4th and 5th grade participants are reading books and writing journal sheets to share questions about the books they’ve read. We’ve been having monthly meeting in the Washington Library to offer support and to book talk the books we’ve read. On Friday mornings at 8:15 a.m., we have Battle Club in the Washington Library. Your child is welcome to attend, we just need your permission beforehand. Feel free to email me if interested. Music Team (M,TH,F) Mrs. Ferguson & (W) Mr. Smith FergusonM @dis trict65.net In all grade levels, students have been using their voices, their bodies, and classroom instruments as they explore the elements of music. In Kindergarten, students have been learning about the concepts loud/soft (piano/forte,) fast/slow (presto/largo,) and high/low in music. They have been listening to and singing songs to reinforce these elements. We continue to strengthen our understanding of steady beat during every music class while integrating our new expressive terms. The students are very excited about Sea Animal Night, which is set to take place on April 28th at 6:30pm! In 1st grade, students are beginning to learn the language of music. We have been using symbolic notation that represents the basic rhythmic building blocks in music. Students have been singing, moving and playing instruments to rhythmic combinations of “ta” (quarter note) and “titi” (eighth notes). We will soon begin our journey onto the musical staff! Washington Fine Arts and Physical Education Winter 2016 Newsletter 2nd grade students have continued to build on their knowledge of symbolic notation in music. They are beginning to learn the basic values of note and rests as well as the placement of pitches on the staff. In 3rd grade, students are continuing to work toward their Recorder Karate belts. Each belt level in Recorder Karate introduces a new note or other musical element. Students earn their belts as they build recorder technique and tone. 4th grade students have been creating a Chinese New Year performance to share with other members of the school. Within each class, the students have grouped themselves by instrument to create a large ensemble consisting of recorders, drums, and cymbals. These students have learned music to set the tone of our performance and create a rhythmic background to our “lion” dance. Two students have been hard at work creating a lion costume which they will use as they move to the music. We can’t wait to share it! 5th grade students have been learning about and playing the instruments and rhythms of West Africa. They have been buildiing techniques for playing djembe, dununs, shakeres, and gankoguis. Students have been learning to follow the “calls” typically given by the djembe that signal a change in the music. They have most recently been learning all djembe and dunun parts for the West African rhythm, Moribayassa. Upcoming Event: 4th/5th grade talent show Thursday, February 25, 7pm Physical Education (MF) Mrs. Pionke & Mrs. Silkaitis [email protected] [email protected] Everyday students actively participate in PE class for twenty minutes. Kindergarten, first and second grade students continue playing cooperative games and work on skills using different equipment like balls, jump ropes, scooters, hoops, the climbing bars and parachute. Grades three through five concentrate on improving their fitness and practicing skills used in sports like soccer, basketball and volleyball. Cup Washington Fine Arts and Physical Education Winter 2016 Newsletter stacking is a fun activity that improves eyehand coordination. Wellness is an important topic discussed during PE lessons. All students learn to eat healthy foods and be active everyday. Special Events: Feb. 11 Jump Rope for the American Heart Assoc.
