tall with an attentiongrabbing form – perfect
for adding interest to
shady areas of the garden.
Blooms appear in
midseason and last for
weeks. An ideal specimen
in a mixed border,
perennial garden or as a
container planting. Plant
in rich moist soil, in shade
or semi-shade and in
groups of 10 or more for
maximum impact.
ASTILBE
‘CHOCOLATE
SHOGUN’
An award-winner, this native
of Japan is easily
distinguished by its dark
foliage. The rich chocolatemaroon leaves provide a high
contrast background for the
blushed pink, white flower
spikes.
Astilbe is a rugged and
beautiful genus of shade
lovers that throw colorful
spikes above divided foliage in
summer, a time when color in
the shade garden is hard to
come by. Use them in groups
in the woodland border, or
mass them to create a ground
cover. In evenly moist or wet
soil, Astilbes are tough, pestfree, and handsome. The only
thing they cannot endure is
drought. The blooms are
useful for cutting if they are
picked when half open.

'Radius' blooms
profusely in midsummer
when the dark red
flowers buds open to
deep rose-red plumes
that butterflies love.

full sun to full shade,
and prefers a moist to
boggy soil which does
not dry out in the
summer.

larger flowers and big

BELAMCANDA

‘HELLO
YELLOW’
BLACKBERRY
LILIES
Belamcanda chinensis 'Hello
Yellow' has yellow,
unspotted flowers that
bloom above compact, bluegreen, iris-like foliage. The
flowers reach about 18" high
so they are much shorter
than the species and work
well towards the border in
the sun OR shade garden.
Belamcanda chinensis
'Freckle Face' has 2"
brilliant orange blossoms
with shading and speckling
above green, iris-like foliage.
The flowers reach about 24"
high and are followed by
interesting black seed
clusters. Grow it in sun or
shade.
CHRYSANTHEMUM
‘YELLOW
QUILL’
HARDY
MAMMOTH
MUM
Unique semi-double flowers
with spoon shaped ray
florets, bright yellow.
Height: 20-36 Inches
Zone: 3-9

for their hardiness and vigor
from the University of
Minnesota. These mums
take several years to reach
their mature height and
form. Very easy care
requiring no pinching,
pruning, or deadheading.
Requires at least half a day
of full sun for best
flowering. Heat tolerant
also.
CLEMATIS
‘SWEET
SUMMER
LOVE’
A mature plant will easily
set more than 2,000 blooms
in a single summer-throughfall season on plants that
reach 8 to 12 feet long and
up to 6 feet wide.
These starry blooms
combine deep red to
magenta tones with
rich grape purple,
creating a
multicolored look that
is stunning. Fragrant
and very, very freely
borne, they arise first
in mid- and late
summer, then again
all fall!
It flowers only on new
growth, so in late winter or
early spring you will want
to cut it back to about knee
height. This will not only
assure you of plentiful
blooms, but will cause this
climber to be more lush and
full than it was the previous
year.
If you are new to Clematis,
you are in for a wonderful
treat. Though slow to
establish, once they are
content, they take off
magnificently.

provided by these early
spring bloomers. Developed
through a collaborative
effort of the Arnold
Arboretum and North
Dakota Agricultural
Experiment station,
Meadowlark reliably blooms
in areas where forsythias
often suffer bud damage due
to cold temperatures. The
dense, semi-arching plants
grow 8 to 10 feet tall at
maturity and tolerate heat,
drought and pollution. A
landscape classic that's a
standout as a hedge, border
or accent plant. To
encourage abundant
flowering, plant in full sun.

Zone 4
Pink or Blue Flowers
Bloomstruck™, the newest
addition to the Endless
Summer® Collection, lives up to
the promise of Endless Blooms
(and then some), with reblooming
mophead flowers averaging 3.5”
to 5” across. The flowers are rosepink in neutral soils or violetblue to blue in acidic soil. Add
soil sulfur or aluminum sulfate to
insure blue flowers. Glossy dark
green leaves with red veins add
to this plants color and make it
stand out before flowers ever
open. The leaves turn reddish
purple in fall. Blooms off of new
wood (but can be late), and can
bloom off of old wood (early) if
winter conditions are favorable.
Best to plant in areas where
snow accumulates. East exposure
is probably ideal.
HYDRANGEA
‘FIRE AND ICE’
'Fire and Ice' changes bloom
color every few weeks,
creating a season-long play
of hue that never ceases to
fascinate. This ultracompact Hydrangea is just
right for the garden,
delighting with long wands
of brilliant color.
The blooms open creamcolored in early spring,
standing out beautifully
against the bright green
foliage on plants 3 to 5 feet
high and wide. By
midsummer blushes of pink
have overtaken the florets,
and soon the entire plume is
a rich shade of cotton-candy
pink. Then, beginning in
late summer and continuing
throughout autumn, the
flowers acquire a deep,
intense shade of magentaburgundy.
Best in part shade.

DWARF
KOREAN
LILAC
‘PALIBIN’
Dwarf Korean Lilac (Syringa
meyeri 'Palibin') packs a big
punch in a little space. Full
sized lilac flowers with that
true intoxicating lilac scent
come on bushes much smaller
than the norm. This is a
compact, spreading plant. It is
small and dense and is perfect
for tight spaces.
The Dwarf Korean Lilac
blooms heavily in mid to late
spring with showy clusters of
pale lilac flowers that are
spread over the entire bush.
This variety is very fragrant
and begins blooming at an
early age.
A mature height of 4-5 feet.
Dwarf Korean Lilac is cold
hardy and not afraid of frosty
nights.
LILAC
‘TINKERBELLE’
It is a rounded, upright, nonsuckering, deciduous shrub
which typically grows 4-6’ tall
and as wide. It is perhaps best
noted for its compact shape
and its wine-colored buds that
open to sweetly-fragrant, pale
pink flowers. Flowers appear
in panicles (3-5” long) in midto late spring.
Easily grown in average,
medium moisture, welldrained soil in full sun.
Tolerates light shade, but best
bloom is in full sun. Prefers
organically rich, moist,
slightly acidic to slightly
alkaline soils with good
drainage. Needs good air
circulation. Good tolerance for
urban conditions. Prompt
removal of faded flower
panicles before seed set will
increase the bloom in the
following year. Prune as
needed immediately after
flowering.
NINEBARK
‘COPPERTINA’
Its foliage, a mellow copper
color, does well in any soil
pH, from acidic to alkaline.
Keep it watered its first
year while it establishes
deep roots. With good first
care, it will tolerate summer
dry periods in the following
years.
This is a deciduous shrub.
Tiny blossoms appear on top
of reddish-brown leaves in
April in warm climates and
mid-summer in the cool/cold
areas of its range. The
foliage reddens as the
season's progress. If its
upright stems need shaping,
prune it right after it
blooms. The flower buds are
set during the summer for
the following year's show so
don't cut it back late in the
season.

CARPET’
Spiraea Magic Carpet was
selected for its dwarf, compact
habit, and vibrant foliage
colors, lasting through the
season’s end. Distinctive
among other golden-leafed
cultivars holding its yellowgold color more firmly through
maturity. This distinctive
shrub delivers a stunning
display of vibrantly-hued rich
red new growth in the spring,
changing to a range of
chartreuse, yellow-gold, and
orange in the summer to
bronze, burgundy, and russet
reds in the fall. The colors
complement showy clusters of
deep pink flowers in early
summer.
Easy to grow, and thrives in
well-drained, moist soil in a
sunny spot but is also
drought-tolerant. This
deciduous, dense and compact
shrub has a low spreading
habit 18-24 inches tall and 2
feet wide.
SPIREA
‘SUNDROP’
It produces beautiful
sprays of pink flowers
that stand out against its
golden petite foliage. A
natural dwarf with a
rounded habit, it requires
little pruning. The golden
foliage holds its goldenyellow color even in
summer heat. Sundrop is
hardier that most golden
spiraea. Sundrop
produces best color in full
sun. Distinguished by
their size, bloom color and
season of bloom, spireas
all have small leaves and
fine, twiggy branches.
Once established, they are
drought tolerant.

‘CARNAVAL’
Most beloved for its showy
flowers. Resplendent in shades
of white, pink and red, each
trumpet-shaped bloom is a
delicate jewel amid the glossy,
green foliage. The first
blossoms appear in late
spring/early summer.
Another bloom in late
summer. When not in flower,
the oblong, 4-inch, textured
leaves will do a wonderful job
filling out your shrub for an
attractive appearance in your
landscape.
Carnaval Weigela will grow 5
feet tall with an equal spread.
Its branches naturally arch,
but if you prefer a more
upright appearance then
simply apply your pruning
shears. Carnaval does best in
sunny locations with moist
soils but tolerates poor soils,
including clay. It’s drought
tolerant and transplants well.
WEIGELA

APRICOT
‘DEBBIE’S GOLD’
& ‘WESTCOT’
‘Debbie’s Gold’
Yellowish orange fruit, 1 ½”
diameter at maturity, has a firm
texture and a less sweet flavor
making it better for canning, but
it is also good for fresh eating.
Freestone fruit ripens in late
July. Self-fruitful, however yields
improve with cross-pollination.
Westcot is a very hardy apricot
that does best in cooler climates.
The fruit is medium sized,
orangish with a blush. The flesh
is juicy, sweet and freestone.
Ripens in mid-season.
Apricot trees have been hard to
cultivate in our area, due to their
very early blooms that are
susceptible to frost. When the
early blooms are hit by frost, the
apricot trees will not be able to
grow fruit. We suggest planting
your trees in an area with good
air drainage (like a side hill) and
not in low lying areas. We want
you to be successful so please
keep in mind the risks associated
with this type of fruit tree.
RIVER
BIRCH
‘SHILOH SPLASH’

Shiloh Splash where you

foliage, Shiloh Splash has
nice yellow fall color as well
as showy exfoliating bark

the winter. Shiloh Splash is

content within the border or
foundation gardens that
surround your home.

dense deciduous tree. It is a
reliable shade tree with a
medium to vigorous growth rate
once established. Fall Fiesta
features a fiery blend of fall
colors ranging from yellow to

compacted, poorly drained soils.
Under ideal conditions, Fall
Fiesta Sugar Maple can be
expected to live to a ripe old age
of 100 years or more. Think of
this as a heritage tree for future
generations! As the tree ages, the
bark becomes deeply furrowed
and grey. The bark rarely
develops frost cracks or fissures.
Fall Fiesta Sugar Maple is rarely
troubled by insects or diseases,
making it an excellent selection
for the homeowner looking for a
low maintenance, easy to care for
tree that offers a beautiful
