63 deer strung up on Marion buck pole
MAILING LABEL
Organizers of the annual Marion Buckpole
had another rousing
start for the rifle hunting
season and nearly broke a
record.
Jessica Miller said this
year’s event was another
“huge success thanks to
all of our sponsors and
participants.”
There was a total of 63
bucks which is six shy of
the record to date of 69.
“We did break the
record of most bucks on
the first day with 47; the
previous record being
45,” Miller added.
First buck on the pole
was also the first youth
boy, Brant Bontekoe,
12, who brought in his 9
point at 7:35 a.m. opening
morning. Sherry Kauffmann with
a 6 point was the first
female. Kila Boonstra,
11, was the first youth girl
with her 10 point. This year’s winner
was Brian Brunink with
a 10 point scoring 159

The release went on
to say the investigation
“took several months to
complete because of the
number of documents
collected from private
vendors. These records,
in turn, were forensically
analyzed by accountants.
Once there was sufficient
evidence to charge, Special Prosecutor Ambrozaitis chose to confront
Ms. Flore through her
attorney before filing a
criminal complaint.”
Otherwise, a trial would
have been “a complicated
and costly case to take
before a jury,” she added.
“This resolution ensures
that she is held accountable for her actions and
restitution is paid.”
In an email reply, the
prosecutor said auditing
services were performed
by Dr. Thomas Weirich,
learned a long time ago
not to second guess.”
Early this year, when
both Donnelly and Flore
held their county positions, Donnelly had
challenged Flore to vacate
either her position as
Clerk/Register of Deeds
or as Administrator/Chief
Financial Officer.
Donnelly said at the
time the titles were a
conflict of interest based
on the Michigan Incompatible Public Offices Act
since the official could
set her own salary. The
Board of Commissioners
disputed a conflict based
on findings by the board’s
civil attorney.
Flore was also able to
set her own pension which
is 80 percent of her earned
salary.
Flore has since resigned
from all positions but was
hired as a consultant to the
county at an hourly rate
of $45. It is not clear whether
this position constitutes
public employment which
Ambrozaitis said Flore is
banned from holding during the probation period.
County Commissioners
in October hired Precia
Garland to work three
days a week as county
administrator. Garland
also is a part-time grant
writer and grant administrator for Munson Health
Care. She previously was
assistant city manager and
Downtown Development
Authority director for the
city of Cadillac.
The county board has
appointed former clerk
deputy Jessica Nielsen as
full-time clerk/register of
deeds.

Marions “white tail wizard” talks about hunting
By Rosemary Horvath
Correspondent
Claude Pollington,
known as C.P. who put
Marion, Michigan in the
bullseye of hunters, reminisced the other day about
his bow hunting prowess, wishing he could do it
all again. The 84 year-old has
hunted so often over
60-plus years he once
chronicled his exploits
and shared his knowledge
in a first-person textbook
of sorts that meticulously
breaks down the movement of hunter, whitetail
deer and bow, particularly
the ones he designed.
The 223-page volume
entitled “The Life of The
Legendary Whitetail Wizard” was self-published in
2007 with assistance from
the late David Richey, who
had been a prolific outdoor
writer and photographer
and who helped catapult
C.P. to fame through numerous magazine articles.
The book is still available
for sale.
Richey had coined
the tag “whitetail wizard” to describe C.P.’s
legendary skill at deer
hunting. Richey was an
outdoor writer for The Detroit News from 1981 until
his retirement in 2003,
and had penned more than
7,000 outdoor magazine
and news articles and 22
books during his career.
Penny Miller, a Pollington daughter, says Richey
had introduced her dad to
Ted Nugent, famed rock
musician but, more importantly, avid hunter. Claude Pollington, also known as C.P., points to an array of C.P. Oneida Bows hanging
in the Buckhole Archery Shop he designed over the years. The line which has been a
Marion Township mainstay for nearly 10 years has been sold to a Missouri entrepreneur.
Nugent introduced C.P.
to his first Oneida Bow in
1983. He liked it so much
he became an Oneida
dealer and when the New
York-based manufacturer
hit on troubled times, he
bought the company 15
years ago and moved
production to Marion
Township, next door to
Pollington Machine Tool
Inc., another testimonial to
C.P.›s ingenuity.
C.P. perfected Oneida
bows and distinguished
his mark with his initials
added to the model names.
A year ago, Pollington sold the rights to the
Ruthann and Claude Pollington pose momentarily before

archery product line to
John Paul Morris, son of
the founder of Bass Pro
Shops. At some point, the
family expects production
and everything will move
to Springfield, Missouri,
where Morris is based.
Morris is known for
bowfishing and puts on a
championship competition every year. Penny
said the sport has taken
off in southern states and
is growing in popularity
elsewhere.
Several Internet websites attest the C.P. Oneida
Osprey Bow as the top
selling bow for bowfishing.
Penny and husband
Chuck Miller had vacationed in the Upper Peninsula where they watched
osprey swoop down to nab
fish in the water. When it
came time to name C.P.›s
new bow design, Penny
suggested the name osprey
because a fisherman also
would aim at his prey.
Marion became a
destination for sportsmen
for several reasons due to
the Pollington touch. C.P.
had opened an 1000-acre
Buck Pole Archery & Deer
Ranch in the early 1980s
of which around 900 acres
is enclosed. The area
during its peak popularity
contained deer and elk for
weekend warriors willing
to pay for an adventure.
“Dad was always a
hunter,” Penny said, one of
seven children. Her mother
Patricia died in 1979 and
C.P. married Ruthann after
both had lost their spouses
to cancer.
Ruthann Pollington is
a quiltmaker and teaches
quilting at the Marion
Historical Musuem.
“My dad was always
busy; always doing
something,” Penny added.
“I never saw him lie on
a couch -- not once. He
bought an excavator this
year and is building ponds.
He’d always tell us kids do
something creative!”
When the young Pollington family lived in
Farwell, C.P. worked
at Holley Carburetor in
Clare as a machinist and
foreman. He grew up with
nine siblings on a farm in
Falmouth. He and seven
of his brothers worked as
tool and die makers, Penny
said.
Bernie, Les and Lyle
still have machine shops in
the area. C.P.’s precision
tool and die shop started
out manufacturing precision tools in small volume.
Now as the second and
third generations man the
ship, the company is about
to get into volume production using robotics.
Gearing up to celebrate
its 50th anniversary in
2016, the family-owned
Pollington Machine Tool
company has embarked on
a huge expansion (story in
the Marion Press Nov.6)
under the direction of
Claude’s grandson, Ross
Richards, who grew up
hunting with his grandfather.
C.P. said he had been
blessed with “good eyes.”
HIs formal education was
limited at a young age and
as a consequence he said
his “brain had to look at
everything and make it
better.”
Claude Pollington, top right, poses with Ross Richards, grandson and general manager
of PollingtonMachine Tool. In front, left, is Penny Miller, daughter and office manager,
and Shelley Miller, daughter and office administrator at Oneida Eagle Bows that soon
will move to Missouri by its new owner. Not pictured is Penny’s son, Jeff Miller, in quality
control at Pollington Machine. Ross’s brother, Shawn Richards, of Holton’s True Concrete
Solutions, poured the decorative concrete floor at the new remodeled Pollington location.

We in turn take the best

who will provide money

your Christmas Wish is

businesses have literally
helped hundreds of
families in other areas
over the year’s Wilcox

this program. Last year
alone we gathered over
$10,000 in cash and gifts
to help nearly 70 families.
Interestingly enough
we had a couple donors
provide $1000 in cash
to help disadvantaged
families. In one instance
I was vacuuming our
office when I came upon
an envelope lying on
the floor. I opened the
envelope and lo and
behold, inside were 10
$100 bills. An anonymous
person had simply opened
the office door and tossed
the money inside without
anyone noticing.
Another person sent a
check for $1000. Others
sent $500. For a closet
Scrooge, like myself,
I couldn’t believe the
generosity of some of the
businesspeople and more
well-to-do residents in the
area. The old adage “we
take care of our own,”
certainly applies in this
area. I have a premonition
the same will happen here
in Chambers County.
Letters we have
received in previous
years have motivated
us to find an apartment

purchase a gravestone for a
distraught widow, provide

Thanksgiving: The Antidote for Anger
We’ve become an angry
people.
Reasons for our anger
range from the fear of
another terrorist attack,
becoming the victim of a
violent crime or to what
some see as the maddening loss of the American
dream.
Anger is a dangerous
emotion that affects every
area of life; some being
more serious than others.
It is one thing to be angry
enough to turn politicians
out of office and another
to vent our anger at home,
verbally and physically harming those we’re
responsible to love and
protect.
But how can one get rid
of anger?
Try thanksgiving.
It is impossible to
be angry and thankful
simultaneously. And we
have many reasons to be
thankful.
In his great Psalm of
thanksgiving, Psalm 103,
King David stressed the
importance of thanksgiving, writing “Bless the
Lord, O my soul, and
forget not all His benefits.”
He seems to be scolding himself for being so
ungrateful when God has
given him so many blessings. Can you identify
with him?
Never have so many
had so much and appreciated it so little.
First century heroes
of the faith could praise
God even in prison. They
could glory even in their
infirmities while we even
growl in our affluence.
Their secret was to be
thankful in the most difficult of circumstances,
being convinced that
God’s love for them was
unchanging even when
things were tough.
The Pilgrims endured
many privations and heartbreaks. Half of their number died during the first
winter in their new land.
By today’s standards, they
had good reasons to be
angry, resentful, quarrel
among themselves, rebel at
their leaders and give up.
Instead, they chose to be
thankful. This not only enabled them to survive but
thrive and their attitude of
gratitude gave birth to the
first Thanksgiving.
In his first Thanksgiving
Proclamation, President
George Washington said
it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the
providence of Almighty
God, to obey His will, to
be grateful for his benefits,
and to humbly implore His
protection and favors.
He also chose a day in
November, in his words,
“to be devoted by the
people of the nation to the
service of that great and
glorious Being, who is
the Beneficent Author of
all the good that was, that
is, or that will be; that we
may then unite in rendering unto Him our sincere
and humble thanks for His
kind care and protection of
the people of this country,
and for all the great and
various favors which He
has been pleased to confer
upon us.”
Neither the Pilgrims nor
the President lived to see
the blessings we have too
long taken for granted.
It’s time to put away our
angry complaining and be
thankful.

Adopt-A-Pets
Today (Friday) is the
324th day of 2015. We
are less that a week away
from Thanksgiving. Give
or take a few meals, this is
the 394th Thanksgiving to
be celebrated since the arrival of the Pilgrims. And
even before their landing,
people living on this continent have been thankful
for health and bounty for
many centuries. Giving
thanks is a long American
tradition. Like many, and
especially just now, we are
looking forward to being
thankful in the company of
our family.
The blueprints for our
annual Thanksgiving dinner are deeply imprinted
on our memory banks; an
indelible menu, seldom
changing from what we
think is perfection. No
need for lists or hunting down special items,
although the uncut loaves
of stuffing bread we grew
up with and prefer are becoming harder to find with
each passing year. Turkey,
stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravies are the
necessities and everything
else we put on the table is
just so much added fluff.
The annual turkey meal
is greatly anticipated and
much appreciated. Yet, as traditional as
our meal and its preparation may be, we have
dispensed with what was
once an essential piece of
everyday in all kitchens.
Unlike our grandmothers,
aunts and mothers, and for
good or bad, we do not
wear aprons. It is not that
I do not own an apron.
I do. I have a number of
them in fact. I just seldom
use them. It has to be a
pretty messy task for me
to seek an apron. Unlike
my mother, an apron is not
part of my daily dress or
one of my regular kitchen
utensils. Mom wore an apron
everyday while performing most of her household
chores. It protected her
clothing from housecleaning tasks and cooking
splatter. And most handily, her aprons provided
pockets, which the clothing it protected might not.
Mom’s aprons always
had pockets. Where better
to keep the ever-handy
tissues and piece of paper
towel? Where else would
she put clothespins or the
stray crayons, puzzle pieces or buttons she found?
She gathered the bottom
corners to carry vegetables
from the garden and apples
from the tree. I’ve seen her
use an apron to cover her
head when caught out in a
sudden shower, and drape
one around her shoulders
when she was chilly.
Mom’s aprons were
more than just something
tied on for extra pockets
or to keep what she was
doing from her clothing.
She had favorites in color
and style and, like many
a mom, made most of her
aprons. She wasn’t much
for the pinafore type, not
caring to look like Betty
Crocker or Lucy Ricardo.
Nor did she wear the cover-all style apron favored
by my grandmothers. Give
her an apron with a full
skirt, a pocket or two and a
long sash to tie in the back.
She liked bold, splashy
prints, stripes and plaids.
No calicoes or dainty flowered prints for her. Pieces
of favorite skirts or dresses
often became aprons when
they no longer served in
their original form.
My mother’s apron
drawer was like a patchwork quilt. It held sentimental recycled favorites
for daily wear, storebought brand new and
rarely worn special aprons
alike. They were all beautifully starched and ironed
and ready for service.
Mom wore an apron tied
over her bathrobe, shorts,
slacks, everyday dresses
or her very best. An apron
was part of her housewifemom uniform. You did
not often see my mother
without her glasses or her
apron. Both were a part of
her and who she was.
Aprons were an extension of the women who
wore them. For years
aprons have been used for
things well beyond their
intended use. The hems of
aprons have wiped away
tears and dirt from little
faces, stanched the flow of
blood from scraped knees
and nicks from dull knives.
They have hidden grief
and despair; been waved
to catch attention and in
celebration. Their regular
use may have fallen by
the way in my kitchen,
but the memories of the
women who wore them
while cooking for Thanksgiving and Christmas and
everyday are as bright as
the aprons they wore.
Happy Thanksgiving
from the Pines. And by
the way, there are 35 days
until Christmas.

1/2 cup fresh parsley
leaves
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/3 cup whole grain
mustard
1/4 cup prepared
horseradish
2 scallions, chopped
fine
1 celery rib,
chopped fine
2 Tbsp. ketchup
2 tsp. paprika
1 garlic clove,
minced
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. tabasco
sauce
3 pounds cooked
and peeled large shrimp
1 head iceberg lettuce, cored and sliced 1/4
inch thick
1. Process parsley,
oil, vinegar, mustard,
horseradish, scallions,
celery, ketchup, paprika,
garlic, salt, pepper, and
Tabasco in food processor
until mostly smooth, about
30 seconds; transfer to
large bowl. Stir in shrimp,
cover and refrigerate for
at least 8 hours or up to
a day.
2. Spread lettuce unto large platter or
individual plates. Using
slotted spoon, remove
shrimp from marinade and
lay over lettuce. Spoon
additional marinade over
shrimp and lettuce to taste
and serve.
**Note; You can use
smaller shrimp to make
it easier to eat. If you
feel that it is more oily
than you would like, cut
back on oil and increase
mustard, horseradish and
Tabasco. This is a real
good and easy recipe to
make, very enjoyable.
SCALLOPS WITH
THYME
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cayenne pepper
1 pound sea scallops,
rinsed and patted dry
3 Tbsp. butter
2 cloves garlic,
minced
2 scallions (white
part only) chopped
1 Tbsp. fresh thyme
or 1 1/2 tsp. crumbled dried thyme
juice of 1/2 lemon
1. Combine the salt
and cayenne in a small
bowl. Sprinkle the
mixture over the scallops. Heat the butter in a heavy
skillet or a wok over medium-high heat until it is
bubbling and beginning to
brown. Add the garlic and
scallions and cook, stirring
for 30 seconds. Add the
scallops and thyme to the
skillet and cook, turning
the scallops, about 4 minutes, until they are lightly
browned. Drizzle with the
lemon juice and serve immediately.
This will serve 2 generous servings. **Very tasty
and very good!!

McBain spikes Rosco for regional semi win
By Ben Murphy
McBain’s post-season
run ended at the hands of
a team that looked like
a squad destined for the
state finals. Traverse City
St. Francis swept away
McBain in the two’s class
‘C” volleyball regional at
Manton on Thursday, 2515, 25-17 and 25-10.
“TCSF was a very
tough team,” McBain head
coach Dawn VerBerkmoes
said. “They have really
good servers and are a
very good blocking team,
which made it hard for
us to get any kind of offense going. We not only
struggled with our pass,
but also on the hitting. My
girls played great defense,
but that didn’t get us
any points. We will have
another shot at them next
year, I presume.”
Rylee Eisenga led
McBain with eight kills
and eight digs, Michaela
Koopman had two kills,
four digs and a block,
Kate Bode had two kills,
one block, one ace and 11
digs, Sammy VanHouten
had one kill, one block and
nine digs Allyssa Johnson
had two kills, Ally Richardson added 14 assists
and two digs and Maggie
Eisenga had 10 digs.
The Lady Gladiators
had swept Tawas Area in
the semi-finals two days
prior, and also swept its’
quarterfinal opponent
Calumet on Tuesday.
TCSF plays in the final
four in Battle Creek this
weekend.
On Tuesday, Nov. 10
McBain had a relatively
easy time with its’ regional
semi-final game against
Roscommon, winning in
straight sets 25-22, 25-22
and 25-19.
“We went into the
Roscommon game with
a lot of confidence, even
though we had lost to them
earlier in the season,” VerBerkmoes said. “I knew
that if we shut down their
best middle hitter, that
we would have a chance
to beat them. The girls
understood the game plan
and did a nice job executing it.”
VanHouten led the
Ramblers with 14 kills, 17
digs and one block, Bode
had six kills and six digs,
Rylie Eisenga added five
kills, three blocks and 16
digs, Johnson had five kill
sand two digs, Maggie
Eisenga had 11 digs and
was 14-of-14 with one ace,
Richardson had 17 assists,
six digs, one kill and one
ace and Brooke Richards
had 14 assists and two
digs.
McBain finishes the season 37-17-4, took second
place in the Highland Conference and was district
champion, after avenging
a couple of regular season
loses to Lake City in the
district title game.
“This was a great season for us,” VerBerkmoes
said. “The seniors will be
missed. Our loss to St.
Francis was unfortunate,
but my girls have nothing
to hang their heads about.
We should have a solid
team next year and plan
to give our post-season
another good run. We will
continue to schedule good
competition to get ourselves ready.”

ball for a point.

Ishpeming topples McBain in regional title game
by Ben Murphy
Sports Writer
fense with six tackles and
Eling brought down five.
McBain finishes the
season 8-4 and shared the
Highland Conference title
with Beal City.
“I think our team accomplished a bit more than
what people thought we
would at the beginning of
the year,” Maloney said.
“It makes a good season
feel a bit better but we
The best McBain football season in several years
came to an abrupt end
Saturday afternoon, as the
Ramblers played to a 40-2
loss to host Ishpeming, in
a division seven regional
championship game.
“We did not play well,
but they had something
to do with that,” McBain
head coach Pat Maloney
said. “We didn’t execute
some plays we normally
do, so it was disappointing
especially in the red zone.
We had the ball twice
inside the 20 and didn’t
score.”
Logan Eling opened the
game with a solid 25 yard
kick-return, but McBain
would fumble the ball
away on its first play from
scrimmage, giving the
Hematites the ball on the
Rambler 32-yard line.
Ishpeming ran four
plays and got a one yard
plunge by quarterback
quarterback Ozzy Korp.
The Hematites also converted the two-point conversion to give themselves
an 8-0 lead and it wouldn’t
be the last McBain would
see of the senior quarterback Korp.
“Korp was a big, strong
kid that could run, throw
and block, he did it all
well,” Maloney said.
On the Ramblers next
drive a big pass play from
Jimmy Schneider to Eling
gave them some life, but
the drive stalled out at the
Ishpeming 35-yard line.
The Hematites picked
up two quick touchdowns
after that, getting a 35-yard
touchdown pass from Korp
and a 16-yard touchdown
run by an Ishpeming running back.
The Ramblers trailed
22-0 late in the half, but
did get a break as they
forced an errant Hematite
punt that gave them the
ball on the Ishpeming 33yard line with 2:17 to play.
On third-and-15 the
Ramblers pulled into their
bag of tricks, in having
Schneider line up as a
wide receiver. Eling, who
lined up as quarterback
on the play, took the snap
and quickly slung it out
to Schneider. Schneider
then fired a perfect pass
back to Eling, who at this
point was in the middle of

areas we plan to work on

a wheel route. Eling found
his way to the 13-yard
line before being brought
down.
That spark was
short lived however, as
Schneider over-threw his
receiver in the endzone
on the next play. The ball
went off the finger-tips of
his wide-out and into the
hands of Ishpeming cornerback Daren Giuchin.
Giuchin then returned that
interception down the left
sideline 105 yards for an
Ishpeming touchdown,
and a an insurmountable
28-0 halftime lead.
“Scoring before half
would have given us the
boost we needed,” Maloney said. “22-6 is a much
more doable comeback
than 28-0. We played well
enough on defense in the
third quarter, but our offense just did not produce
what it needed.”
Korp added a 28-yard
touchdown run in the third
quarter that made it 34-0
and the Ramblers scored
their only points of the
game later in the frame. A
bad snap went flying into
the endzone, where the
Hematites alertly picked it
up and ran it through the
back of endzone to minimize the damage.
McBain couldn’t cash in
on the ensuing possession,
with Ishpeming adding
one last score in the fourth
quarter to bring the final
to 40-2.
Jimmy Schneider finished three-of-13 passing
for 102 yards and three
interceptions, Eling had
three receptions for 67
yards and Tylor Clark had
51 yards on 24 carries and
also had 41 yards receiving.
