Hike it, jog it, pedal or paddle it, the Greater Morgantown Area offers year-round opportunities for just about every outdoor recreation enthusiast. Over 50 miles of paved and crushed-limestone surface rail-trail invite walkers, runners, cyclists and ‘bladers to the area’s Caperton, Mon River and Decker’s Creek Trails. Stretching south from Morgantown to historic Pricketts Fort State Park in Marion County and north nearly to the Pennsylvania state line, the Caperton and Mon River Trails parallel the Monongahela River and offer glimpses of native flora and fauna, migratory birds, river traffic on the Mon and vestiges of the area’s industrial past. Its eight-mile paved portion passes the amenities of Morgantown’s developing Wharf District, through downtown Morgantown and into Star City. Trekkers and cyclists choosing the scenic Decker’s Creek Trail travel east from Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park in downtown Morgantown and up into Preston County – the trail’s elevation rises 1,000 feet at a 2% grade along its 19-mile length. Mountain waterfalls tumble through Decker’s Creek’s rugged limestone boulders bordered by thickets of rhododendron, mountain laurel and towering evergreens. 9 Decker’s Creek travelers frequently report wildlife sightings in the woods and fields along the trail. If you didn’t pack your bike, rent one trailside at Wamsley’s Cycles in Seneca Center, just north of downtown Morgantown. Looking for a whole different view of the Greater Morgantown Area? Bring your own pleasure craft, kayak, canoe or paddleboat and spend a day on the Upper Mon Water Trail – the southern-most navigable section of the Monongahela River. Put in at the municipal dock at Star City’s Edith Barill Park and explore the pools between the 65-mile water route’s five locks and dams from Fairmont in Marion County to just north of Rice’s Landing in Pennsylvania. If more adventurous activities “float your boat,” head to Albright in Preston County for a whitewater run on the Cheat River or Big Sandy This map is intended for general reference only. For a free Official Trail Map Contact the CVB Today! Creek. Spring runs on the Cheat regularly feature Class IV or V whitewater – and the 13-mile-long Cheat Canyon offers over 30 rapids rated Class III or better. Hurl through Decision, Big Nasty, Tear Drop, Coliseum and Fossil Falls rapids for a well-earned dip in Swimmers' Rapid at the end of your trip. Preston County also boasts one of the National Wildlife Federation’s top 100 bird-watching spots in North America – Cranesville Swamp. Located near Terra Alta (WV Route 7), the swamp’s tundra and wetlands host animal and plant life seldom seen this far south and offer even veteran birders opportunities to add to their life lists. As long as you’re gazing skyward in Preston County, make the drive to Cathedral State Park near Aurora (WV Route 50), an ancient hemlock forest of majestic proportions. Giant conifers up to 90 feet tall and 21 feet in circumference create natural cloisters throughout the park. Named to the National Registry for Natural Historical Landmarks in 1966, Cathedral “possesses exceptional value in illustrating the natural history tourmorgantown.com • 800-458-7373 of the United States.” Outdoor recreation is a year-round proposition in the Greater Morgantown Area. If you plan an autumn visit, take a fall leaf-peeking amble through Coopers Rock State Park or Monongalia County’s Chestnut Ridge Park, both just east of Morgantown off I-68. Chestnut Ridge’s 400-foot-long lighted toboggan hill is a favorite site for outdoor action on snowy winter days – rent a toboggan and enjoy a steaming cup of hot chocolate from the concession stand at the foot of the slope before grabbing the tow rope back to the top. Woodland trails winding through both Chestnut Ridge and Coopers Rock offer great cross-country skiing during the winter months – trails that challenge even the gnarliest mountain bikers in warmer weather. Pssst – even most locals don’t know that a fishing license isn’t required to “drown worms” (and maybe even land a trout or bass) in either of Chestnut Ridge’s two stocked fishing ponds, which feature swimming and paddle boat rentals, too. The park also welcomes overnight tent and trailer 10 campers with electrical hook-ups at its trailer sites and shower facilities. Other overnight guests opt for accommodations in the park’s lodges and rustic cabins. Morgantown’s municipal park system, administered by the Board of Parks and Recreation Commission, oversees operation of 11 municipal parks ranging from a mini “pocket park” in the Suncrest neighborhood to sprawling White Park, whose 170 acres includes baseball and softball fields, three miles of multi-use trails and an ice arena and sports facility. Morgantown’s newest public green space, Dorsey’s Knob Park, features a fabulous 360-degree view from its craggy namesake pinnacle: its recently-refurbished lodge (comfortably accommodating up to 16 overnight guests) is becoming a popular venue for gatherings from corporate retreats to family reunions. Marilla and Krepps Parks offer tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, picnic spots and swimming pools. Even stressed-out adults emerge from a splash down Marilla’s serpentine tunnel slide with ear-to-ear grins. A visit to Mylan Park will introduce you to Morgantown's fastest growing recreational and educational complex. A sprawling 300 acre site just off I-79, Mylan Park is the perfect location for your next fair, festival or family reunion and is home to Miracle Field, Anker baseball and softball complex, Pro Sports Plex indoor soccer center, an equestrian center and more. Several of the Greater Morgantown Area’s six public 18-hole golf courses offer duffers challenging greens and fairways three seasons a year. In Monongalia County, Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa overlooking Cheat Lake is home to two 18-hole championship courses. Meadow Ponds in Cassville and Mountaineer Golf and Country Club in Pursglove, both 18-hole courses, summon duffers to the western side of the county. Surrounded by the Preston County hills, Terra Alta’s Alpine Lake offers an 18-hole, 72-par course and the Preston Country Club bills its 7,000-yard, 18-hole on the Cheat River outside Kingwood as “a level spot in the Alleghenies.” As home to West Virginia University’s Mountaineer sports teams, the Greater Morgantown Area offers nearly year-round opportunities for great outdoor spectator sports, too: collegiate football, baseball, rugby and soccer are huge crowd pleasers. The MedExpress Mountaineer Triathlon is becoming a new summer sports tradition in the Morgantown area, hosting an international field of professional and amateur athletes vying for $25,000 in prize money. The competition requires contestants to swim, cycle and run along a challenging course of up to 70 miles. The last weekend of July, literally thousands of motorcyclists cruise into the Greater Morgantown Area for the MountainFest Motorcycle Rally, a three-day celebration of all things “biker.” Based at three distinct venues (Mylan Park, downtown Morgantown/the Wharf District, and Marvin’s Mountain Top in Preston County), the long weekend features wall-to-wall entertainment, a Saturday afternoon bikers’ parade through the WVU campus and downtown Morgantown and an unparalleled exhibit of vintage and antique motorcycles. Westerfeld The Good Counsel Friary The Esso Station in Arthurdale Read this sentence aloud – if you’re brave. “The Monongahela River flows through Monongalia County.” Stumble a bit? You’re not alone. The Anglicized version of a Native American phrase, “Monongahela” (muh non guh HE la) translates loosely as “river with slippery banks” or “river whose banks fall in.” The word wandered further from its indigenous roots when the Virginia Assembly chartered its vast northwestern territory as “Monongalia” (mon un GAIL ya) County in 1785. Sound like a native Monongalian in no time by adopting the verbal shorthand of referring to both as the “Mon” River and “Mon” County. Both Mon (or Monongalia) and Preston Counties offer history buffs ample opportunities to explore the Greater Morgantown Area’s rich and diverse architectural, commercial and social heritage. Main Street Morgantown offers an historic audio walking tour of downtown Morgantown at the Greater Morgantown Visitors’ Center located on High Street. It includes info on the district’s landmark Metropolitan Theatre and the Monongalia Arts Center on High Street; the restored Garlow/Lewin House on Spruce Street; and the county’s oldest standing stone building, (appropriately named the Old Stone House – circa 1795) on Chestnut Street. Other self-guided walking tour itineraries direct you through South Park’s streets lined with grand homes of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and residential Old Suncrest, a Morgantown suburb developed in the 1920s and now adjacent to West Virginia University’s Evansdale Campus. tourmorgantown.com • 800-458-7373 Steven J. In glass production heydays, Morgantown boasted over 30 glass factories at one time. Some of that history is still preserved at the Seneca Center, a former glass factory, now an upscale shopping destination. Aficionados of the glassmakers’ art also include the Morgantown Glass Museum on the Mileground Road on their must-see lists. The privately-owned museum houses over 2,000 pieces produced locally by the Morgantown, Gentile and Seneca glass factories between 1892 and 1980. Venture beyond Morgantown’s city limits to visit other historic Mon County sites of interest including Dent’s Run Covered Bridge (Mon County’s sole surviving covered bridge) located off US Route 19 south; the circa-1870 Easton Roller Mill (WV Route 119/17); and the Scott’s Run Museum and Coal Camp Gift Shop on Main Street in Osage. Historians and genealogists alike recognize the West Virginia & Regional History Collection on the sixth floor of the Charles C. Wise, Jr. Library on West Virginia University’s Downtown Campus as an invaluable resource. Containing the largest collection of West Virginia materials in existence, the library-within-a-library includes rare manuscripts, ephemera, photos, maps, oral histories and sound recordings relating to West Virginia, the central Appalachian region and the University itself. But Mon County doesn’t have a lock on history in the Greater Morgantown Area. From Arthurdale to Aurora and Hazelton to Tunnelton, Preston County boasts plenty of history, too. Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt created Arthurdale, the country’s first and largest New Deal community, in Preston County in 1933. Organized to help area workers – primarily coal miners from western Monongalia County – displaced by the economic ravages of the Great Depression, Arthurdale grew to a settlement of 165 homes within just four years and included workshops, a clinic, school and community center, many of which are still intact. Located 15 miles east of Morgantown (WV Route 7 to Route 92 south), the Arthurdale Historic District provides a “living history” snapshot of Depression-era life in a restored homestead, complete with homesteaders, livestock and gardens during the summer months. Now Arthurdale is a national historic treasure. Although Arthurdale may be Preston County’s best-known historic site, other municipalities throughout the county claim their fair share of heritage-related destinations. The Preston County Historical Society operates History House Museum on State Street in Terra Alta (WV Route 7) – thirteen rooms of antiques, artifacts, relics and miscellaneous papers housed on three floors of a former bank building. The hand-dug railroad tunnels from which the Preston County community of Tunnelton (WV Route 26) took its name were the longest in the world in the mid-1900s. Construction began on the 4,100 foot-long excavation in 1850 and the resulting route proved of critical strategic importance to Union supply lines during the Civil War. The Preston County seat of Kingwood (WV Route 7) is home to several noteworthy historic structures including the circa-1841 McGrew House, the Art Deco Preston County Courthouse and the Preston Academy (circa 1841), a work-in-progress currently undergoing extensive restoration. The privately-owned Westbrook’s Esso in downtown Kingwood provides reminders of the not-too-distant past of “happy motoring.” The former gas station is equipped with automotive accoutrements and memorabilia dating from 1927-1935. Buckwheat Festival Parade 13 Stephen J. Shaluta Wheeling Symphony at Hazel Ruby McQuain Amphitheatre Genesis Studio From public venues staging full-blown, professional theatrical productions to private galleries and intimate club settings, the Greater Morgantown Area’s arts community’s reputation for presenting the liveliest performing and visual arts is well-earned. West Virginia Public Theatre launches its 21st season at West Virginia University’s Creative Arts Center this year as plans for the construction of its own 1,500-seat performing arts center in Morgantown’s developing Wharf District continues. Known for bringing the best of Broadway to North Central West Virginia, WVPT stages classics like Beauty and the Beast, Pump Boys and Dinettes, Hello Dolly, and Evita during its summer season, late June to mid-August. Check www.wvpublictheatre.com for shows and performance times. Billed as “West Virginia’s most beautiful playhouse” when it opened July 24, 1924, the landmark Metropolitan Theatre in downtown Morgantown hosted performances by Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Don Knotts and Helen Hayes in its earlier years – and more recently, WVU theatrical productions, local dance recitals and graduation ceremonies. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the Met is putting the finishing touches on a $3 million, decade-long restoration. Under the management of the City of Morgantown’s Board of Parks and Recreation Commission, the historic structure is reclaiming its status as a popular venue for live theatrical productions, musical and dance performances, classic film tourmorgantown.com • 800-458-7373 presentations, concerts and community events. Community theatre has a strong tradition in the Greater Morgantown Area as well, with the Morgantown Theater Company, the MT Pockets Theatre Company and the Monongalia Arts Center (MAC) showcasing talented local performers in more intimate surroundings. With over 500 musical and theatrical performances produced annually in its recently-renovated Clay Concert Theatre and Davis Studio Theatre, WVU’s Creative Arts Center on the University’s Evansdale Campus also hosts exciting faculty and student exhibits in its Mesaros Galleries. As the Greater Morgantown Area’s newest entertainment venue, the Hazel Ruby McQuain Amphitheater at Riverfront Park on the Caperton Trail in downtown Morgantown hosts the city’s summer Concerts in the Park series, annual festivals and civic observances. Its audiences have welcomed performers as diverse as the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and Patty Lovelace. Even the downtown Morgantown Public Library and Monongalia County’s Courthouse Square serve as arts venues – with storytelling 14 sessions for kids, special exhibits and periodic used book sales at the library and a free noontime concert series every Tuesday and Thursday, June through October at Courthouse Square. The area’s visual artists display their creations year ‘round at a variety of local display spaces including the MAC’s Benedum Gallery, the Morgantown Art Association’s gallery in the Mountaineer Mall and at private galleries around town. Visit ZENCLAY on WVU's Evansdale campus, Appalachian Gallery, Tonique’s Trilogy and Contemporary Graphics in downtown Morgantown to view (and purchase) their works. If you’re sufficiently fortunate to visit the Greater Morgantown Area in the fall, you’ll find that Monongalia and Preston Counties host some of the state’s most family-friendly festivals. But long before the area’s “leaf peeper” season begins, the summer entertainment line-up at Chestnut Ridge Park (I-68 east) encourages visitors to spread a blanket on the ground for the kids and dogs and enjoy nearly weekly performances by regional musicians. The last weekend in September, head east on WV Route 7 for old fashioned buckwheat cakes-n-sausage at the Preston County Buckwheat Festival in Kingwood. September also plays host to the Wine and Jazz Festival, held at Camp Muffly. West Virginia's best vineyards gather with some of Morgantown's favorite restaurants to celebrate wine, food and live jazz music. November visitors enjoy traditional foods, entertainment and opportunities to purchase some of the state’s best artisan-produced crafts during West Virginia University’s annual Mountaineer Week Craft Fair & Quilt Show (WVU Mountainlair, Downtown Campus). Arts Monongahela’s annual Art Tour of galleries and studios traditionally is slated for November, as well. From downtown Morgantown’s one-of-a-kind boutiques, restaurants and clubs to nationally-known retailers located in surrounding malls and shopping centers and Preston County’s “hidden treasures,” the Greater Morgantown Area offers even discriminating shoppers a diversity of delightful destinations. Downtown Morgantown is a vibrant, diverse shopping and entertainment district offering goods and services that appeal to visitors, the WVU community and residents alike. Its establishments present a surprising variety of must-have merchandise from gourmet chocolates and fine wines to jewelry, gemstones and beads; fine native arts and crafts to women’s couture fashion; lost-in-the-‘60s retro accessories to all manner of outdoor clothing and accoutrements; and custom leather goods and shoes to interior decorating services and unique furnishings. With approximately 2,000 on-street, surface lot and garage parking spaces in three strategically-located structures, parking in downtown Morgantown puts shoppers, diners and after-hours revelers within a pleasant stroll of stores, specialty shops, restaurants, theatres, bars and clubs. Expand your spree beyond downtown and your Morgantown shopping, dining and entertainment experience will become even tourmorgantown.com • 800-458-7373 more memorable. Rather not drive? Ride the Mountain Line’s city-wide community connector service to any of the city’s shopping destinations. Allow plenty of time to investigate the fine shopping, dining and services available at Morgantown’s historic Seneca Center on Beechurst Avenue. The former glass factory now houses a variety of boutiques and unique shops including a fine dining restaurant, upscale women’s clothing store, purveyor of luxury bath products, full-service cycling shop, antiques mall and complete day spa and gift shop. Head to Morgantown’s Evansdale area to browse the specialty shops and restaurants at Chelsea Square (Van Voorhis and Chestnut Ridge Roads) and Suburban Lanes Plaza (Chestnut Ridge Road). The Greater Morgantown Area boasts two regional malls on its periphery: Morgantown Mall, (exit 152, I-79) and Mountaineer Mall (exit 1, I-68). National retailers and well-known restaurant franchises operate at two relatively new shopping destinations on the city’s outskirts: Glenmark Centre (exit 7, I-68) offers shoppers a blend of local, regional and national stores and eateries, as does University Town Centre (exit 155, I-79), also offering a new, state-of-the-art, 16-screen movie theater. Driving 20-minutes east of Morgantown to Bruceton Mills (exit 23, I-68) 16 in Preston County, serious antiquers update their wish lists while visiting the Bruceton Mills Antique Mall, the area’s largest. They also slip in a stop at Hostetler’s Country Store to pick up a bottle (or case) of West Virginia wine and other gourmet goodies. Retailers in several other Preston County locales offer visitors unique shopping opportunities as well. Located in Kingwood’s historic downtown district, The Calico Cat beckons browsers, as does Rowlesburg’s Curiosity Shoppe. Serious shopping can be a hungry (and thirsty) business but restaurants and pubs, strategically located throughout the area, offer well-earned refreshment and relaxation. Start your Morgantown morning downtown with a latte, cappuccino or mug-o-joe at the Blue Moose Cafe or Jay’s Daily Grind. Brick oven-baked scones and breads beckon morning commuters and visitors alike to The Daily Kneads. Hungry for serious morning eats? Head for Ruby & Ketchy’s in the Cheat Lake area or Little Sandy’s or the Mill Place Restaurant (exit 23, I-68 E, Bruceton Mills) for genuine country breakfasts in Preston County. Preston County’s country roads also lead to great down-home cooking at Monroe’s, Tanya’s and Mary’s restaurants and the Preston Country Club, all in Kingwood. Diners venturing deeper into Preston County also find homestyle cooking at Alpine Lake’s Evergreen Room east of Terra Alta; B ’n A Country Restaurant in Macomber; Aurora’s J&G’s Family Restaurant; and at Melanie’s, also in Aurora. Lunch in the Greater Morgantown Area assumes a decidedly ethnic flavor at Wings Ole, Yama Japanese Restaurant, Oliverios Ristorante, La Casa, Mediterranean Market and Deli, and Colasante’s Ristorante and Pub. Downtown diners preferring vegetarian and organic dishes lunch at Maxwell’s and the Mountain People’s Market and Kitchen. When evening rolls around, sip a libation (pinky aloft) and nibble hors d’oeuvres at downtown Morgantown’s Vintage Room or enjoy a tall, cool one on the Montmartre’s elegant terrace perched atop the Historic Clarion Hotel Morgan. Special occasions call for fine dining (and fine wine selections) at downtown’s Cafe Bacchus, Mercury Tapas Bar or The Glasshouse Grille in historic Seneca Center. Evening diners seeking more casual venues frequent Madeleine’s Restaurant downtown, Westover’s Aquarium Restaurant and Lounge or the Regatta Bar & Grille in the Waterfront Place Hotel. The Flying Fish and Company Seafood Market and Deli in Suncrest specializes in “the freshest fish fast” and Back Bay on the Mileground frequently features all-you-can-eat seafood specials. Morgantown’s own micro-brewery, the West Virginia Brewing Company (downtown) also serves lunch and dinner – and if it can be wrapped in a burrito, it’s on the menu at downtown’s Black Bear Burritos. Incidentally, both the West Virginia Brewing Company and Black Bear frequently feature live (and lively) musical entertainment during their week-end dinner hours. Speaking of entertainment, the Greater Morgantown Area supports a lively and diverse club, pub and cafe scene featuring blues to bluegrass and rock-a-billy to roots after its shops have closed for the evening. Check out performance schedules at the West Virginia Brewing Company, the Blue Moose Cafe, Vice Versa, 123 Pleasant Street, Gibbie’s Pub & Eatery, McClafferty’s Pub and the Black Bear Cafe in downtown Morgantown and Archie’s Pub in Sabraton. The Laurel Mountain Coffeehouse at Monroe’s in Kingwood also hosts live performers. Any WVU sporting event is always “the biggest show in town” – and pre- and post-game tailgating is a popular sport in itself among Mountaineer supporters. Die-hard fans traditionally celebrate at the Boston Beanery (Downtown and Evansdale), Mario’s Fishbowl (Wiles Hill), Crockett's Lodge (Star City), Chic'N Bones Rhythm Cafe (Downtown) and the Back Door Pub (Downtown). Fairmont Road Westover, WV 26501 304-292-0504 Dulaney Oil in Morgantown (I-79, exit 152, Dent’s Run Boulevard) is the West Virginia stop for eco-conscious travelers looking to fill the tanks of their flex-fuel vehicles with either E85 or biodiesel fuel. Mike Kelly, owner of Dulaney Oil, pumps both E85 (a mixture of 15% gasoline and 85% ethanol) and biodiesel, an 80/20 diesel/soybean oil mix. Dulaney is West Virginia’s sole E85 retailer, according to the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition. One of approximately 600 commercial E85 outlets in the U.S., Dulaney prices its E85 about 20-cents cheaper per-gallon than traditional 87-octane gasoline. “But that’s not really a valid price comparison because E85 is more than 100 octane,” he said, “and that’s more octane than conventional high-test.” Kelly says he could sell E85 even more competively if he didn’t have to figure in a 25-cents per-gallon shipping fee. “At this point, we have to truck it in from the E85 processor closest to West Virginia, and they’re located in Illinois,” he explained. “But gas prices are still going up and people are becoming more interested in lessening the country’s dependence on foreign oil, so the consumer demand’s growing for E85. Maybe someday we’ll have a wholesale processor right here in West Virginia.” MORE INFO: Dulaney Oil, 304-296-3911, e-mail [email protected]. tourmorgantown.com • 800-458-7373 20 APPELWOOD MASSAGE - Swedish, neuromuscular, shiatsu and myo fascial massages. 2 Locations, Call for appointment. 1749 Smithtown Road Morgantown, WV 26508 304-296-2607 WES TOV ER WHAT TO DO COMER MUSEUM - Exhibits, education, cultural and community activities. Tucked between the Decker’s Creek Trail and Decker’s Creek, the 1.5 acre dog park is an easy half-mile stroll from downtown Morgantown’s Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park. The park was named for the late Dalmatian, Stanley Laishley, whose human companion, George Laishley, was a major proponent and benefactor of the park’s construction. Initially conceived by the Morgantown Dog Owners Group (MDOG), Stanley’s Spot was built with widespread community support and is maintained by Morgantown’s Bureau of Parks and Recreation Commission. Fully enclosed, the park offers separate play areas for “big dogs” and “little dogs,” benches for less-energetic humans and water fountains for both. Following its spring 2006 opening, Stanley’s Spot was named one of the Ten Best Dog Parks in the U.S. by Dog Fancier Magazine.
