2013 ANNUAL REPORT Our Mission We preserve and enhance the unique historic estate of Madame Ganna Walska, care for and improve its collections, and develop its conservation and horticulture programs, so they educate us, inspire us, and advance our understanding and appreciation of the importance of plants in our lives and in the life of the planet. Lotusland has also been a leader in applied research and implementation of sustainable practices in horticulture and garden maintenance. It makes Lotusland the go-to place for students and for our professional colleagues in public gardens across the country. Perhaps most of all, our sustainable practices make Lotusland one of the most beautiful, healthy, and richly diverse gardens in the world. Lotusland is an important community resource, serving students of all grades and ages on subjects about plants, horticulture, sustainability, conservation, architecture, history and art. In particular, our Fourth Grade Outreach Program is considered a vital and indispensable program, giving these children a thorough understanding of plants and the relationship that plants have in people’s lives. Some of our greatest assets are our family and community: Our staff are hard-working, dedicated people who love Lotusland, and are committed to its success. The Board of Trustees give of their time, talent, and treasure because of their passion for this great garden and community resource. Thank you also, for your trust, your generosity, your commitment, and all the ways you challenge me to excel in my position. I want to thank the President of the Board–Larry–thank you for your outstanding leadership for the Board and the organization - for your thoughtful and practical approach to our challenges, and for your undeniable passion for Lotusland. 242 volunteers gave over 14,500 hours of service in 2013. Lotusand could not share the garden and get all the work done without your incredible generosity. And ever so importantly, thank you to our members and donors. If not for you, and your sharing the passion and joining in our vision, we would not be able to keep Lotusland’s phenomenal resources available to our community and future generations. It is the support of donors that allows us to resolve major facilities challenges, renovate the oldest sections of the gardens, and preserve the plant collections. Our visitors tell us the gardens have never looked better. That is because of the incredible support we have received over the past twenty-five years from PEOPLE – our members, our donors, and our community. Valentine Director Emeritus Steven Timbrook 3 Year in Review 2013 Swarm: A Collaboration with Bees A provocative display of the artistry inspired by bees and hive culture featuring a dozen artists using sculpture, photography and drawings to pay homage to the pollinators whose numbers are dwindling worldwide. Gross revenue $81,741 (not including admission) Expenses $47,980 Net revenue $33,761 A special thank you to our Guest Curator Nancy Gifford as well as the 13 participating artists. Swarm sponsors: Certis Capital Management, Inc., Giffin & Crane, Nancy & Michael Gifford, Rich & Luci Janssen, Kenneth Volk Vineyards, NS Ceramics, and Santa Barbara Winery. $1 Million Gift to Endow the Topiary Garden In 2013, Lotusland received a $1 million gift from an anonymous donor to create an endowment fund to sustain, in perpetuity, the historic Topiary Garden. Lotusland’s topiaries and garden clock are critically important examples of the spectacular features incorporated into American garden estates during the first half of the 20th century, and they especially epitomize the whimsical aesthetic for which Lotusland is renowned. Significantly increasing Lotusland’s small endowment will insure our ability to exist as an iconic, living piece of Santa Barbara’s history. Our plan is to endow one garden at a time and we are especially grateful to this donor who understands the power of endowment gifts and chose to endow Lotusland’s Topiary Garden. This gift is a momentous start to our endowment strategy to preserve and sustain Lotusland in perpetuity. 4 Exceptional Plants: Lotusland Auction and Sale Gross revenue $47,661 Expenses $12,957 Net revenue $34,703 We are very grateful for the 150+ very special auction items that were generously donated by nurseries and individual donors, and to Event Chair and Auctioneer, Jeff Chemnick along with committee members Virginia Hayes, Paul Mills, Mike Tully & Leland Walmsley for helping us grow this amazing event!
