WELCOME
As we share this year’s annual report with you, I’m aware of how
often you are asked to give to organizations in need. I am also aware of how
generously you respond to those requests. One thing I’ve come to realize
and appreciate about the Bishop Diego community is its sincerity. As the
Head of School, I am privileged to hear countless stories of how this school
has transformed lives, educated minds, and launched careers. Rarely do
these accounts sound gratuitous or hollow, rather, they are among the most
honest and heart-felt emotions I encounter on a daily basis. I am deeply
touched that in the midst of all the need we experience, you have chosen us
as one recipient of your treasure.
There is more to tell than there is space to write. We thank you for
not turning away when we needed you. Bishop Diego continues to grow
in programs offered and quality each year. This is only possible through the
gift of your generosity. As members of the Bishop Diego community, you
make a difference in the day to day efforts and also support a long tradition
of excellence in Catholic education. On behalf of the students, faculty, and
staff, I thank you!
Kindly,
Dr. Paul Harrington
Head of School
Thank you for entrusting your children, your time, your talent,
your faith and your resources with us. We see trust as a sacred mission and
as the essential element in a partnership for success. As members of the
Board of Trustees we embrace that trust as we work as stewards of Bishop
Garcia Diego High School.
Our mission is to provide a faith-based educational environment
that exceeds the highest academic standards, prepares our students for the
future, and promotes all aspects of their God-given potential.
Our students are terrific. You can see it in the pictures and in
their vibrant spirit as they study, excel, compete, and contribute to the
community through personal service.
We are blessed to have an incredible parent community. We believe
it has no rival. The time, talent and commitment of Bishop Diego’s parents
enrich the student experience and fortify the mission of the school.
Our benefactors form another powerful and creative dimension
that enables Bishop Diego to be an independent Catholic School. Our
benefactors generously give so that capable students from all economic strata
and all faiths can enjoy the benefits of a world-class educational environment. We thank them for their leadership and
fidelity.
Our goals for Bishop Diego are ambitious. Our foundational God-given values stand strong. Our
commitment to our students and their parents inspire our work. And because we take our sacred trust seriously you
can count on our commitment to seek the best in all we do.
We invite you to read our annual report and please let us know what we can do better for you and your
family.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nicholas Vitalari

2012-2013 Annual Report
Bishop Diego High School
Over the past 14 years the Bishop Diego football program has
enjoyed a level of success that belies the size of our small school.
The program has won league championships in 2006 and
2011 and earned playoff berths in 10 out of 13 seasons, twice
advancing to the CIF semi-finals and going all the way to the
CIF finals in 2007. Then there was the 2012 season where the
team won yet another league championship and went undefeated
for the first time in school history. What is the equation for such
a winning formula? Well for starters the common denominator
is Coach Tom Crawford.
DISCIPLINE: “It’s not the will to win that matters, everyone has
that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.” BEAR BRYANT
Building a quality program such as this means having a keen eye
for the details that make for a strong foundation. It means being
an effective motivator because you will be asking a great deal
of your student athletes, assistant coaches and their collective
families. With the help of his coaching staff and team parents
Coach Crawford has created a tight knit community that shares
the common goal of supporting one another throughout the
football season and beyond. Systems have been put into place
to support the players both on and off the field. Coaches act
as mentors year round, GPA’s are monitored and team study
hall is implemented whenever necessary. As a result of the focus
on academics only one player in 14 seasons has been declared
academically ineligible. The safety of our student athletes is
Scott Winneswisser ’07 – “Coach Crawford is one of
the most intelligent and personable coaches I’ve ever
had, but he still has a hard nosed intensity. My class
used to call him Chuck Norris because his character was
both mysterious and heroic.” It was always a good time
with Crawford, except maybe in government class.”
always a priority, only the finest quality equipment is procured
and utilized and Bishop Diego has led the charge in the use of
safety headgear during passing league tournaments. In recent
years an exciting association with the Peak Performance Project
(P3) has given those student athletes willing to put in the extra
time the benefit of cutting edge technology and training to
enhance performance and aid in injury prevention. All of these
initiatives and many more stem from Coach Crawford’s vision
and ability to motivate and lead.
PRIORITIES: “Show class, have pride and display character. If you
do winning will take care of itself.” BEAR BRYANT
Not surprisingly, Coach Crawford has been named the league
Coach of the Year four times and in 2008 and 2013 he was
honored as the Santa Barbara Athletic Roundtable Coach of the
Year. Four of Coach Crawford’s players have been recognized as
Santa Barbara County Players of the Year, 22 players have been
honored as All CIF and five from last year’s squad were named
to the All State roster. The accolades are gratifying and yet not
nearly as important as the impact he has had on his players. As
you can see from the comments below no matter what the score
is at the end of a game, or the record at the end of a season,
Bishop Diego’s players, families and alumi know how fortunate
they are to have a man the caliber of Tom Crawford on campus
every day as their teacher, coach and mentor.
Aaron Skinner ’07 - “Nothing is ever about him or his
success. For Coach it’s all about the kids he’s coaching
and developing into great young men who leave Bishop
prepared for the real world, having learned valuable
lessons along the way…and getting some wins too!”

FACULTY PROFILE
Coach Thomas Crawford
FACULTY LONGEVITY
97 Years of Combined Service and Dedication
Dan Peeters
Mr. Peeters’ dedication, wit and charm have made Bishop a better place to learn and work for
13 years. A fixture at every sporting event during his 10 year tenure as Athletic Director and a
tremendous source of support for Bishop’s coaches, Dan has also coached Track, Softball, Boys
Basketball, Girls Basketball and Football and served as an enthusiastic member of the Theology
Department. Whether roaming the quad in a Tigger costume, or simply smiling on his way to
class, Dan lives the motto: Every day is a holiday at Bishop Diego.
Mandy Combs
Ms. Combs’ 13 years at Bishop have been characterized by passion and a steadfast
commitment to student learning as an English teacher, Librarian and Dean of Arts and
Humanities division. Her students express profound gratitude for her willingness to “spend
any amount of time necessary to help improve our writing.” And none who experienced it will
forget her orchestration of activities that saw students pelting Father Tom with water balloons,
a haunted house in which the faculty terrified the student body and many memorable Beat
Carp rallies.
Tom Crawford
Mr. Crawford has devoted his diverse talents to Bishop for 14 years, serving as Dean of Men,
Head Football Coach, Chair of the Social Studies Department and a beloved teacher. His
accomplishments on the field and in the classroom speak for themselves, but his impact on the
lives of our students is immeasurable. His students and players describe him as “a great man.”
One who “pushes me to make good decisions in life.”
Linda Williams
Ms. Williams has been a steady, positive and humble influence on Bishop students for 20
years. Her ability to reach students of all abilities as an English teacher is evident in their
academic successes both here and in college. She has also served as a Theology teacher,
Drama teacher and Senior Class moderator, roles in which she has helped shape students’
understanding of what it means to be a Bishop student and an authentic person of faith.
Sister Helen Wolkerstorfer
37 years. Yes. 37. No list could adequately describe the contributions Sister Helen has made
to two generations of Bishop students and faculty as a counselor, teacher and friend. Quick
to give the praise she never seeks, perhaps the best summation of her influence came from a
recent graduate. When asked why Sister Helen was so beloved, she said, “No matter what the
situation, Sister’s presence makes you feel that everything is going to be all right.”
Bishop Diego High School
is an independent Catholic co-educational secondary school that welcomes students of all faiths and provides them with
the spiritual, personal, and intellectual knowledge to meet the enduring challenge of realizing their God-given potential
in a multi-cultural society.

We trace the earliest roots of our school and every Catholic school in California to the educational system founded by
Blessed Junipero Serra, the tireless Apostle of California.
Bishop García Diego High School combines the rich heritage of two predecessor schools, Dolores School, which
opened in 1926, and Catholic High School, which opened in 1940. Both schools were on Micheltorena Street and
were operated by Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, under the Jesuit Fathers (S.J.) and the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary
(B.V.M.). The original campus is now the home to Notre Dame School.
In 1959 the Archdiocese of Los Angeles assumed sponsorship of the school, moving it to the present site on La Colina
Road and taking California’s first bishop, Bishop Francisco García Diego y Moreno, as its patron.
In 2005 the school became an independent, not for profit, Catholic high school, that is governed by a Board of Trustees
and supported by tuition revenue, charitable contributions and endowment income.

Bishop García Diego High School
VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN PROFILES
A Bishop
Ambassador
for three years,
Charlotte
(Charlie)
Fling was an
integral part
of the school
community,
attending
admission
events, speaking
to others on
behalf of the
school, and
welcoming
visiting students
to Bishop who
were interested
in attending. In addition, Charlie was chosen to be
a Campus Minister and served as a senior retreat
leader who facilitated the retreat for her classmates.
Charlie served on the Student Government for
two years as a class representative and participated
in the STEAM Academy as well. She was also the
editor of the school’s yearbook. A three year varsity
basketball athlete, Charlie was a defensive force
and an excellent shot blocker who contributed
greatly to the league title earned this year by the
team. Accumulating over 200 community service
hours during high school, Charlie volunteered
at the wheelchair sports camp, and was an active
member of the Interact Club.
If you think
that Bishop
High School’s
2013 class
valedictorian
must be a
shy, socially
awkward,
bookworm
type then you
obviously
haven’t met
Therese Fazio.
With her 4.53
first semester
GPA and
well-rounded
extra-curricular
resume to
compliment her impressive academic
achievements she represents the best of her
high school class with a style all her own. She
and Charlie Fling, the 2013 salutatorian, will
be the first young women to graduate from
Bishop’s STEAM program of study which
emphasizes classes in science, technology,
engineering, art and math. Despite her
rigorous course load Therese found the time
to play two years of volleyball, serve as a
Student Ambassador for three years as well as
taking the initiative to launch a peer-tutoring
program for Bishop’s California Scholarship
Federation chapter.
Academically, Charlie was a member of CSF
as well as a member of NHS for two years. She
earned the title of Head Marshal her junior year
and was selected as an Elks Lodge Student of the
Month in October. Accepted to seven universities,
she will be attending one of the top science
universities in the world next year, the University
of St. Andrews in Scotland, declaring her major as
Astrophysics.
Therese combined her love of travel and
leadership though participation in the
National Youth Leadership Conference in
both Washington, D.C. and China. She
recently participated in the Senior Presents,
which was the culmination of a six-year
commitment to the National Charity League,
which is a mother-daughter philanthropic
organization committed to community
service, leadership development and cultural
experiences.

Therese applied to 14 schools and notably was
accepted to all 14, among them UC Berkley,
UCLA, NYU and UCSD. She has chosen
to attend the University of San Diego and
plans to pursue studies in marine biology and
business.

2012-2013 Annual Report
ANNUAL FUND
The Annual Fund supports excellence at Bishop Diego by providing opportunities for our students beyond what
can be covered by tuition and fees. The Annual Fund enriches all of our programs: academic, the arts, technology,
athletics, campus ministry and our financial aid program. Without generous support from parents, alumni and
friends, Bishop Diego would not be able to advance our mission and transform the lives of our students. Bishop Diego
gratefully acknowledges and thanks those who helped make the 2012-2013 Annual Fund a huge success!

luck at the tables.
The value of hard work was instilled in Mario by his parents from a very young age. Mario's father passed away
when he was six months old, leaving his mother to raise five young children by herself. The young family was hard working
and resourceful in their efforts to support themselves, which led to the creation of a small trash company. After graduating
from high school, Mario went to work full time picking up trash in Montecito. Later, along with his two sons, Mario
would create what is now known as MarBorg Industries. He felt tremendous pride in his small company and loved to
watch his sons and numerous grandchildren carry on his passion and commitment to hard, honest work. His dedication
to MarBorg was felt by numerous employees both past and present who affectionately referred to him as "Papa Mario." He
continued to make his daily rounds at the facility; his last day being Monday, August 12, 2013.
Community involvement was an important part of Mario's life. He joined the Knights of Columbus (Council
1684) at the age of 18 and was an active member until his passing. Additionally, he was involved in the Santa Barbara
Catholic High Booster Club, Montecito Lions Club, Meals on Wheels and the Poor Clares Monastery monthly adoration.
He was generous with his time and gave much to the community he loved.
Mario was a devoted and committed Catholic, who lived his life reflecting the values of faith, honesty and
humility. He was deeply involved in the formation and development of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. As a young
man, he was an altar server at the first mass celebrated in the church in 1936. Mario and his wife, Peggy, were active
parishioners of Mount Carmel and found many beloved friends in this community.
Close to Mario's heart was his loving family. He led his family with strong values and a commitment to each
other. His legacy will live on through his two sons, David (Louise) and Mario (Judy), sisters, Laura and Ida Borgatello,
Augusta Borgatello Lord (son Denny (Laura) Lord), sister's-in-law Nancy Barnett (Richard), Martha Saulsbury, Lynette
Saulsbury, brother-in-law James Saulsbury (Darlene). He was blessed with seven grandchildren who affectionately called
him "Papa" and 21 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his canine pal, Bodie.
David ‘60 and Mario, Jr. (Tote) ‘ 62 would like to thank eveyone who made a donation to Bishop Diego in
memory of their father. Over $25,000 was raised for the Adopt-A-Student fund.
Vinura HareenWijesinghe was born in Fukushima, Japan on November 1,
1995 and passed away on June 4, 2013 following the end of his junior year at Bishop.
He left Japan after the earthquake and tsunami in March of 2011 because the nuclear
power plant, which was located about 30 miles from his home, was severely damaged
and it was unsafe to continue to live nearby. He came to the United States to live with
his aunt and uncle, studying English, with intentions to return to Japan for school. He
was only planning on staying in the states for 2 months but soon decided to enroll in an
American high school.
Hareen’s favorite subjects were math and science. He spoke perfect Japanese and
worked hard at learning English. His desire was to continue his love for science and/or
mathematics in a university to become a neurosurgeon or computer programmer.
At Bishop, Hareen was known for his contagious and very bright smile, his
kind and friendly personality, his polite manners, and his sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

IN MEMORIAM
Mario (Hammer) Borgatello passed away peacefully on August 15, 2013 at
the age of 95. He was born on April 18, 1918 in Santa Barbara, California and was the
youngest of five children born to Secundo and Josephine Borgatello. He graduated from
Santa Barbara High School, Class of 1936. Mario and his buddies attended many dances
in Santa Ynez Valley where he met the "love of his life" Peggy Saulsbury. He would come
up from Santa Barbara every weekend just to dance with Peggy. After dancing their hearts
out they decided to marry in September of 1941 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church
in Las Vegas. Mario and his wife settled into a simple, but beautiful life together in
Montecito where they raised their two beloved sons, David and Mario.
Mario and Peggy continued to make weekend trips to the Santa Ynez Valley
tending to their ranch where he raised corn, fruits and vegetables for the family to enjoy!
He also enjoyed many fishing trips to the High Sierras and driving to Las Vegas to try his

SPECIAL EVENTS
The Beach
was the theme for the 2013 Bishop Diego gala auction
held on March 2, 2013 on the school campus, honoring Robert and
Rosemary Shull. For the last 35 years Bob and Rosemary have supported
Bishop Diego High School as parents (Bob, Jr. ‘80, Rodney ’82, Amy
‘86), volunteers, athletics boosters, grandparents (Spencer ’11, Greer
’13, Henry ’17) and benefactors. They were honored not just for their
generous financial support of our school but for hundreds of hours
of time, miles of VHS tape, tanks of gasoline, pounds of pasta and
hundreds of gallons of milk, soda and lemonade.
More than 250 guests attended this amazing event. Our “Beach Chairs,”
Tina Agnoli ‘85, and Janna Price, along with local designer Lisa Carter
and the Behind the Scenes crew transformed the gym into a Hamptonslike beach scene . We thank them, our school parents, and school
supporters immensely for the time and donations needed to pull off this
night! The auction raised just over $305,000 (net) and one-hundred percent of these proceeds go to support the
Adopt-A-Student program. The need-based financial aid program currently offers assistance to 60% of Bishop Diego
students. Thank you to everyone who attended the event and supported many deserving students who could not
otherwise attend Bishop.
