U.S. beef exports in 2003 reached record levels and were second only to Australia worldwide. The December 2003 discovery of a single case of BSE in Washington state, however, reduced 2004 beef exports 82 percent to 461 million pounds. This drop reduced the U.S. share of beef exports by major traders from 18 to three percent. At the same time, U.S. beef imports in 2004 were 14 percent higher than the record set in 2002. Meanwhile, U.S. pork exports have trended upward and likely will continue to do so, ERS says, while pork imports have declined. ERS says U.S. pork exports are forecast to rise 21 percent in 2005 to more than 2.6 billion pounds, the 14th consecutive annual record. Imports are projected to decline by eight percent, after falling seven percent in 2004 from the previous year. Imports of lamb and mutton The & The C in 2004 were up eight percent from a year earlier at 181 million pounds. Lower than expected first-quarter 2005 imports led to a reduction in the import forecast for the year, now projected at 177 million pounds, a two percent decline from 2004. According to the report, lamb and mutton imports from Australia and New Zealand comprise a growing share of total U.S. lamb meat consumption at more than 45 percent. Combined U.S. exports of broiler and turkey meat are expected to increase approximately six percent in 2005 to 5.6 billion pounds. The report notes that this forecast presumes that disease-related limitations on U.S. poultry meat exports are relaxed, while limits on China’s and Thailand’s exports remain and exports by Brazil do not undercut U.S. product. The full report, “DiseaseRelated Trade Restrictions Shaped Animal Product Markets in 2004 and Stamp Imprints on 2005 Forecasts,” is available on the Internet at www.ers.usda.gov/Publications/LDP/Aug05/ldpm13301/ . OMPUTER OWBOY By C. A. Rodenberger, PhD. I have argued for years that the increased economic productivity of the last 15 years is due largely to the application of computers to work smarter rather than harder. The gains made in manufacturing with CAD/CAM and robotic applications, in retailing with point of sales applications helping salespeople, and in controlling inventory and shipping. I haven’t seen the same intensity of application in agriculture, but I am seeing some breakthroughs. I finally got around to reading my June issue of Mechanical Engineering, and the edi- torial comment was about farming computerization. The story is about an almost fully automated farming operation outside Waterloo, Iowa run by Clay Mitchell and his father, Wade. They run the farm from their tractor cab office. The tractors steer themselves, the smart sprayer knows when to turn on and off its nozzles, they can access the Internet, and the grain-handling facility can be controlled from anywhere on the farm network. By using his smarts to plant a mix of corn and soybeans, Mitchell was able to increase yields by 20 to 30 percent. Ants work differently than ticks. Have to be gentle, or the force of the air will cause the ants to stumble and ball up in a wad. Takes patience to drive ticks. But driving sheep on the hot days of summer in the shortgrass country is perfect practice for rounding up ticks. Rush a tick; he will roll over in a ball and play dead. Failure plus heat drove us into the visitor’s center. The Department of Interior uses the elk herd introduced into the district as a distraction from the expectations of the Buffalo. The lady in charge said the elk only came out in the cool part of the day. Could tell she had a lonely job, as the men’s restroom was still locked at noon. Back at the inn by nightfall, we sat on the porch instead of climbing the hill to the pond. So much for the only National River episode. Took heart in the crickets’ evening chorus, backed by the bass section of bullfrogs. Hope someday the fireflies make a comeback at the ranch. He used technology intelligently to follow his innovative approach. Auto-steering makes it work. He uses survey-quality global positioning, which is accurate to the inch and updates at a rate of 50 times a second. “We can then do things much more accurately than people ever could,” Mitchell commented in the article. He got his gains by cleverly planting corn and soybeans in the same field, where the soybeans need less sunlight and can be planted within the corn, getting greater yields from the same acres. I hope that more farmers and ranchers will find smarter uses of computer technology in their business. There is no need to run your cattle thru the chute and eartag them to get effective fly control. All you have to do is put out a Forage Star molasses block with Altosid, (IGR). Tubs also contain essential minerals, vitamins, protein, enzymes and probiotics. Fly Buster Plus is a very highly fortified mineral tub that can be fed for 10-11 cents per head per day. Fly Buster Pro offers 12% protein and IGR with a vitamin and mineral package that can be fed at a cost of 17-18 cents per head per day. Molasses tubs are the best way to feed minerals; won’t blow away and water will not hurt them. Call ForThe Dealer Nearest You.
