Introduction
BG Products, Inc., located in Wichita, Kansas, USA, manufactures and distributes a broad
line of specialty lubricants, greases, chemical additives, cleaners and professional tools for use in
automotive, marine, aerospace, industrial and heavy equipment applications. BG Products sells
exclusively to the professional service industry through a network of importers and distributors
worldwide. Given the complexity and strength of our products, and the necessary training to
perform services, BG does not sell to retail stores.
Founded in 1971, BG Products is committed to the highest quality standards in product and
professional service and maintains an ISO 9001 Certification. The seven founders of BG Products,
Inc., had a collective 175 years of petrochemical business experience and they knew that a business based on quality, with the belief that people are centrally important, would succeed worldwide. Every decision we make concerning products, policies, plans and progress is based on this
commitment and this belief, and on our objective to serve and benefit our distributors and their
customers.
BG Distributors are supported by our technical service and professional trainers. They work
closely with ownership, senior management, maintenance and fixed operations personnel to
achieve improved vehicle performance, cost effectiveness and profitability, and customer satisfaction and retention. BG Representatives are there to assist in resolving driveability problems,
in data management, in training on the proper use of BG’s products and service solutions, or in
overall maintenance operations management and business planning. Restoring vehicle performance, reducing un-scheduled maintenance and improving customer satisfaction are some of the
things that have established us as the industry leader domestically and a respected and growing
service provider and maintenance partner worldwide.
BG has such a commitment to training that it operates BG University. Classes are held at various locations for professional training on industry trends, technical issues and developments,
as well as for BG’s products, equipment and services. Distributors, sales representatives and
technicians from around the world attend BG University courses and programs. BG also sends
corporate trainers and technicians to the field to help analyze problems and collaborate on
solution strategies.
BG Products’ research and development and testing laboratories create and test various products
and services. BG Distributors have full use of the labs’ analysis technology in assisting their clients.

BG Quality
BG Products, Inc., maintains high quality control standards
and is recognized as such by our industry, customers and the
federal government.
A recent independent survey of 500 new car auto dealership
service managers in the United States identifies the number
one reason for choosing BG products is “quality of product
line,” and therefore more use BG Products than any other fluid
maintenance service product line, including those provided by
the dealer’s OEMs. These same service managers noted that
BG representatives provide quality service and training.
Our in-house quality control includes, but is not limited to, the practice of frequent
internal inspections. We test the raw materials prior to product manufacturing. Additional
inspection takes place during the packaging process to ensure quality both inside and out.
All products are serialized, dated and recorded for future quality comparisons. We believe
that quality does not stop once the product leaves the manufacturing area, which is why
we have such a strong reputation for customer service and retention.
The quality behind BG Products is recognized by various outside sources. Our fuel
additives are registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Our
manufacturing facilities are in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. BG Products follows all federal regulations as set forth by the United States
Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to
ensure proper handling and resulting in the highest quality of product.
Additionally, BG Products, Inc., is an ISO 9001:2000 certified company that complies
with the requirements for the Quality Management for the Design and Manufacturing
of Specialty Lubricants, Chemicals, Tools and Equipment.

BG Research & Development/Testing Laboratories
In an ever-changing world of environmental regulations and technical advancements, the
BG Research & Development/Testing Laboratories are dedicated to new product development and testing, as well as to provide support service to the worldwide network of BG
Distributors.
We maintain the highest standards for our labs including frequent, scheduled calibration
of testing equipment and inter-laboratory testing to ensure the integrity of our analytical
procedures. Laboratory personnel are active in various industry-related technical committees. New formulas are developed and tested in the R&D Lab. When satisfied with those
results, if applicable, the formulas are further developed and assessed in the company
Testing Lab or at independent laboratories.
The BG R&D Lab provides Quality Control services to the manufacturing division. Samples
are tested at three stages: as raw material, after manufacturing and on the filling line. A
dedicated profesional staff provides an integral link to the distributor network and continues to evaluate and improve our products to meet the ever-changing needs of the
industry. Test results from our R&D Lab are used for product analysis, comparisons and to
pinpoint problems or equipment failure modes. This information allows the distributor to
tailor a preventive maintenance program to meet the individual customer’s needs. The BG
R&D Lab is one more way for BG Products, Inc., to hold true to its philosophy of producing products of superior quality for its customers.

you and your technicians on how to use our products to solve your problems.
Our laboratory can analyze your fluids to get to the base of your needs. Often, one of our
existing products can best address your problem. If not, we have the resources to create
new solutions. Furthermore, we can recommend products and techniques that will minimize future problems and help you keep your vehicles running smoothly and efficiently.

BG University
BG Products has such a strong commitment to training that it started BG University. Distributors, sales representatives and technicians from around the world attend courses at
various locations for intense training on BG’s parts, products, equipment and services.
BG University starts with the main course, where attendees learn how to take advantage of
BG’s assets to help their customers. They learn about the sophisticated testing equipment
in the BG Laboratory: how BG compares products, analyzes fluid samples and tests each
fluid for quality control. They tour the plant and meet the associates who see the product
flow all the way from tanker to shipping container. They get a tutorial on each piece of
equipment: how it works and how to teach the client to use it. Finally, they participate in
live demonstrations, getting hands-on experience on how to use BG’s products, parts and
services to meet the client’s needs.
Graduates of BG University then take their knowledge to the field, becoming instructors
themselves. They work with their clients to train their technicians. The instructors at the
main plant, along with the laboratory, are always available to help problem-solve or test
fluid samples to create solutions.
Besides the main course, BG University offers more thorough instruction, both in the
classroom and in the field, on specialized areas of service such as driveability and fuel
related services, service advisor training and advanced diesel applications.
BG also has individuals with specific expertise who travel to assist a distributor or importer
in training their technicians or those of the client, anywhere in the world. Instructors in the
field see problems first hand and allow BG to stay ahead of the competition by taking this
information back to our own research and development labs for troubleshooting.
Because of commitment to training, representatives of BG Products spend time with their
clients analyzing problems and offering solutions. While others may Drop and Run—drop
off the product and let the local technician figure out how to use it—representatives of BG
Products spend time training, addressing issues and creating solutions.
BG University is unique in the industry and part of what establishes BG Products as the
industry leader in training the technician.

Independent Survey of New Car Dealerships in the U.S.
An independent firm was hired to survey 500 dealerships across the U.S., with responses
coming from the service managers within each dealership. The 500 dealerships surveyed

In 2002, International Trucks created the 6.0L Ford PowerStroke® engine with hydraulic
injectors. It built a reputation as one of the most powerful performers in the light-duty
diesel market, plus it’s quiet and clean! Unfortunately, the Ford 6.0L PowerStroke® is
highly susceptible to carbon deposits in its EGR and air intake system. In less than 20,000
miles/32,000 km, carbon buildup has the potential to completely plug the EGR.
In addition, the high soot content of the diesel engine oil plugs the oil passages causing
the injector to misfire. This aggravates existing driveability problems of rough idling, hard
starting and poor fuel economy.
Until now, the only way to clean the exhaust and fresh air passages was to physically
remove the engine components and have them steam-cleaned. This process is costly and
inconvenient and, as a result, rarely performed.
BG technicians analyzed the problem and created a solution. Unparalleled by any other
diesel service, the BG Diesel Induction Service chemically cleans each component and
completely restores the vehicle to peak performance… without engine tear down! This
service moves BG Diesel ISC® Induction System Cleaner,TM Part No. 25532, through the
EGR runners and cavities as well as the air intake. BG 109 Compression Performance
Restoration, Part No. 10932, is added to the engine oil while the induction service is being
performed to clear the oil passages of the hydraulic injectors and restore performance.
Then, the EGR valve is thoroughly cleaned with BG Throttle Body & Intake Cleaner, Part
No. 406.
Using exclusive BG tools and products, the BG Diesel Induction Service decreases rough
idle, engine stalling, hard starts and hesitation, while increasing vehicle power. As a preventive maintenance, this service is proven to decrease emissions, restore fuel efficiency
and engine performance.

Volkswagen/Audi & BG Dynamic Engine Cleaning Service
The European carmaker Volkswagen/Audi was facing a sludge problem resulting in $4.4
million in warranty repairs. Some models of the Volkswagen Passat and the Audi A4 are
equipped with turbo-charged engines, which are especially prone to sludge-forming deposits.
The only known solution was to take the engine apart to clean out the sludge that had accumulated in as little as 20,000 miles/32,000 km.
BG Products, Inc., worked with Volkswagen/Audi to help develop a way to get rid of the
power-robbing sludge and remedy the warranty dilemma, while saving hours of shop time
in the process.
The objective of this project was to dissolve the sludge so it would be suspended in the
cleaning solution and could be removed by the special filters. BG chemists formulated and
re-formulated chemistry while working with Volkswagen/Audi engineers in Germany. In
the end, BG and Volkswagen/Audi created the BG Dynamic Engine Cleaning Service using
BG Dynamic Engine Cleaner, Part No. 103192, and a new service tool with special adaptors
and filters, Part No. 9850.

Maruti-Suzuki/TATA Motors LTD EGR Service
Indian carmakers Maruti-Suzuki and Tata were facing problems in their Fiat variant and
Tata variant Diesel engines due to a build up of carbon deposits on the EGR. Their only
known solution was to take out the EGR valve and manually clean the deposits that had
accumulated in as little as 9,300 miles/15,000 km.
This was a labor intensive process that involved everything from brush scrubbing to soaking the EGR in diesel fuel. These options were not providing efficient or satisfactory results
with a process that took over three hours to complete. A further issue that arose was the
reassembly of the EGR into the engine. Often times the EGR was up against the firewall of
the engine and was nearly impossible to remove. In addition, it was difficult to disassemble
and reassemble in the same working order as before. These companies wanted a solution
that would clean the EGR valve without removing it from the engine. The process needed
to be completed on the vehicle itself.
BG technicians analyzed the problem and created a solution. A new tool was created for
this engine and the following BG chemistry products were used to completely clean the
EGR valve in less than 45 minutes.

BG MOA® prevents oxidation and thickening of engine oil under even the most severe
stop-and-go, high temperature driving conditions. It fortifies high quality engine oil to provide superior long-lasting engine protection and helps maintain optimum engine performance. BG MOA® keeps piston ring belts, hydraulic lifters and other engine components
clean to help extend engine life and reduce costs of operation. It is compatible with both
synthetic and petroleum-base oils.
The following shows the results from a Sequence IIIF Engine performance test. This is an
industry standard test using a 1996/1997 General Motors 3800 fuel injected engine. The
test measures high temperature wear and oil thickening.
The maximum allowed viscosity increase is 275% after 80 hours. As the graph shows, the
API SL 5W-30 engine oil resulted in a 250% viscosity increase, which passes the test.
The 5W-20 engine oil meets the Ford specification requirement, which only allows a 200%
viscosity increase but requires a double length test (160 hours). Obviously, this is much
more stringent than the normal 80 hour length with a 275% allowed increase.

Thin Film Oxygen Uptake Test
ASTM D 4742
The Thin Film Oxygen Uptake Test, ASTM D 4742, measures oxidation stability of a lubricant.
Basically, the oil sample is absorbing oxygen. Oxygen, in turn, will cause oxidation and
breakdown of fluid. This is when viscosity increase may occur as well as sludge formation. The endpoint of the test (in minutes) occurs when the fluid sample is saturated with
oxygen.
Each base oil responds differently when BG MOA® is added because each engine oil manufacturer may be using different additive chemistry.

BG All Weather DFC with Lubricity, Part No. 247, is a multi-functional
diesel fuel conditioner especially formulated for low and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuels. It
contains highly effective “heat stable” detergent/dispersants for cleaning the entire fuel
system from fuel tank to catalytic converter, including the fuel injectors. It contains an
approved diesel pump lubricant to provide lubricity for the fuel pumps and fuel injectors
so as to prevent scoring and excessive wear. It will also protect against diesel fuel gelling
during engine operation in sub-zero temperatures. BG All Weather DFC with Lubricity also
adds antioxidants and corrosion inhibitors to maintain fuel quality during storage. One 6
oz. (177 mL) bottle treats 10 – 40 gallons (40–150 Liters). Catalytic converter and oxygen
sensor safe.

DuPont ® F21-61 Fuel Oil Stability Test
After aging and cooling, the fuel samples are filtered and the average amount of filterable insolubles is estimated by measuring the light reflectance of the filter pads.
The 100 and 0 % extremes of the reflectance rating range are defined by an unused
filter pad and a commercial black standard, respectively. The higher the reflectance
value, the cleaner the filter.
The samples on the left are from untreated base fuels. The samples on the right are
the same base fuels with the addition of BG diesel fuel treatment.

Cummins L-10 Direct Injection (DI) Test

The Cummins L-10 Injector Depositing Test has been used for many
years to determine diesel fuel quality. It has also been used to evaluate
the effectiveness of additive chemistry in keeping injectors clean. At the
end of the test, injector plungers are assigned a rating between 1–100,
where 1 is the best and 100 the worst. Flow is also reported as % flow
loss. For Superior Pass results, a plunger rating ≤10 and a % flow loss
of ≤5% are required.

BG Universal Super Cool® coolant additive is specially formulated for use in
conventional, long life, hybrid and heavy duty coolants. It provides outstanding protection
for all metals utilized in modern automotive cooling systems. It has excellent corrosion
inhibitors, anti-foam capabilities, and is biodegradable in its unused form.

ASTM D 2809 test
The photos below are from an ASTM D 2809 test conducted at an independent laboratory.
This test measures water pump damage. General Motors requires a 100-hour test, while
Ford requires an extended length test of 300 hours. It is BG’s practice to perform tests
under severe conditions in order to show the quality of the product being tested.
Therefore, the 300-hour test was performed.
The top photos show the damage sustained on the pump impeller when run 300 hours
on ASTM synthetic used coolant. The bottom pump was run on the same coolant, but was
treated with BG Universal Super Cool,® Part No. 546.
This test requires a rating result. A new pump is rated at 10. A rating of 8 is required to
pass the test. The pump rating from the test with the untreated coolant was 7. The pump
rating from the test with the BG Universal Super Cool® treated coolant was a 10.

Simulated Service Corrosion Testing of Engine Coolants

The ASTM D 2570 test simulates what occurs in the cooling system as a whole during a
normal service interval. The test measures corrosion on six different metals.
The photo at left contains metal coupons resulting from untreated synthetic corrosive
coolant, and the photo at right contains metal coupons resulting from the same corrosive
coolant treated with BG Universal Super Cool,® Part No. 546.
Below are the results of this test in milligrams of weight loss. Four out of the six metals
showed results that were 100% better than the results from the untreated corrosive coolant. All six metal coupons show improvement versus the coupons from the untreated
coolant.

Corrosion of Cast Aluminum Alloys in
Engine Coolants Under Heat-Rejecting Conditions
ASTM D 4340
The D 4340 is an industry standard test used as a laboratory screening method for evaluating the effectiveness of engine coolants in fighting against aluminum corrosion. This test is
of great importance because aluminum is a predominant metal in today’s light duty automobile. From heads to heater cores to engine blocks, aluminum corrosion can promote
failure in many different areas.
The test consists of an aluminum specimen, which resembles a hockey puck, exposed to
a coolant blend under heat flux. The test interval is one week, and the test temperature is
275°F.
The following bar graph is a compilation of results from D 4340 testing with BG Universal
Super Cool,® Part No. 546. The graph portrays the improvement in aluminum protection
with the addition of BG Universal Super Cool.® The test result is a measure of weight loss
corrosion. Therefore, the lower the result value, the better the protection because a low

Corrosion Test for Engine Coolants in Glassware
ASTM D 1384
The D 1384 is an industry standard test used for evaluating coolant corrosion protection
for six different metals—copper, lead solder, brass, steel, cast iron and cast aluminum.
These six metals are major metals found in different components in the cooling system.
The six metal bundle is submerged in a beaker of the test coolant blend. The beaker sits in
a hot bath and air is bubbled into the test sample. The test interval is two weeks, and the
test temperature is 190°F.
The graph below shows results from D 1384 testing of a General Motors synthetic degraded corrosive coolant. The test was performed using this coolant untreated and treated with
BG Universal Super Cool,® Part No. 546. As with the D 4340, a lower result value is desired
because the result is a weight loss calculation due to corrosion. Take note that the treated
coolant result for steel and cast iron show negative (–) values. A (–) value reflects a weight
gain versus a weight loss. It is not uncommon to see (–) results from this test. This generally means that a heavy passivating (protective) layer still remains on the metal coupon.

BG ATC Plus enhances properties of both new and used automatic transmission fluid.
It improves fluid oxidation stability, thereby prolonging fluid life and the life of the transmission. It prevents leaks by conditioning hardened seals—keeping them soft and pliable. BG
ATC Plus helps control transmission shudder‚ retards formation of sludge and varnish deposits and prevents foaming.
A second independent laboratory test was performed with a Dexron® III/Mercon® ATF
blended with BG ATC Plus. This test is the Anti-Shudder Durability Test required under the
Mercon® V specification from Ford Motor Company. This test requires a post-test component
inspection. Upon physical examination of the transmission components immediately following the completion of the test, the following comments were posted by the testing laboratory.

ASTM D 4742
The following two TFOUT charts show the results of some base ATFs—the results are in
minutes. The higher the time value result, the better the oxidation stability of the fluid.
The oil sample is absorbing oxygen. Oxygen, in turn, will cause oxidation and breakdown
of fluid. This is when viscosity increase may occur as well as sludge formation. The endpoint of the test (in minutes) occurs when the fluid sample is saturated with oxygen.
These TFOUT charts show results for some base ATFs as well as the same base ATFs with
the addition of BG ATC Plus, Part No. 310, and some other market ATF conditioners.

BG Ultra-Guard™ is a synthetic (Polyalphaolefin) gear oil blended to SAE 75W-90
Thermal Stress Test
Three gear oils were heated at 250°F for 600 hours, then stirred with a magnetic device.
Sample at left is BG Ultra Guard,™ Part No. 750. BG’s proprietary antioxidant system with
synthetic oil base stocks DID NOT create varnish. The two samples at right are two high
quality major oil companies’ GL-5 gear oils. Exhausted oxidation inhibitors and normal
petroleum oil base stocks created rock hard varnish.
BG Ultra-Guard,™ Part No. 750
viscosity and can be used in all car and truck axle applications calling for a GL-5 gear oil. It
can also be used in all truck standard transmissions and automotive manual transmissions,
transaxles and transfer cases calling for GL-4 gear oil, engine oil or ATF, as long as viscometric requirements are satisfied. BG Ultra-Guard™ provides thermal stability, smoother
gear shifting, quieter operation, protection against wear, pitting and corrosion, improved
seal performance, improved fuel efficiency, reduced maintenance, long drain life.
L-37 Low Speed/High Torque Test
The photos below show gears after an L-37 Low Speed/High Torque Test using BG Ultra
Guard,™ Part No. 750. The L-37 test has a running time of 24 hrs. at 275°F and 600 ft-lbs of
torque, which is a very high load. The pass/fail criteria require that there be no “significant”
distress observed on the gears. These gears are clean with virtually no wear. The tooling
marks still remain on the gear teeth of both the pinion (left) and the ring (right) gears.

As can be seen by the above results, BG Ultra Guard™ is a superior gear oil that well
exceeds the requirements of a regular length L-60 test even after a 6X (300 hrs.) time
limit. The extended length test was performed because of a specification called “Eaton
Roadranger.” This specification requires a 6X length test. Eaton is a major manufacturer of
drivetrain components, from transmissions to driveshafts to final drive axles.
