The nets believe they can squeeze another good 20 years out of their 70 percent disposable income! I t is said that U.S. TV networks have finally discovered the over-50 crowd. In actuality, the advertising agencies and their clients have realized that aging boomers (and in particular the 55-to-64-year-old alpha boomers) make large consumer purchases, and the TV nets are adapting accordingly. First, by increasingly removing programming decisions from the network sales division (which tends to favor the 18-49 viewers) and second by bringing in aging actors such as Robin Williams and Mark Harmon (both 62), Ted Danson (66), Tom Selleck (69) and Beau Bridges (72). NBC has among the youngest stars, James Spader (54). But this trend isn’t new; The New York Times detected it in 1992 when it wrote that both ABC and NBC were changing focus with programs for older viewers and that, while previously the network sales division prevailed, “nowadays the programmers are taking over.” It is estimated that by 2017 boomers will control 70 percent of the U.S.’s disposable income. In contrast, the so-called “millennials” or “Generation Y” (those born between 1982 and 2004) are making fewer key purchasing decisions, watch less traditional TV and when they do, skip commercials. A recent survey by Texasbased Parks Associates shows how younger consumers are increasingly choosing OTT over broadcast television. to have time to watch television and, when they do, they tend to skip commercials. And for all of that, advertisers were paying premiums to reach them. Finally they said, “Who needs it?” In addition, today’s boomers are drastically different from previous older generations. Researchers agree that, nowadays, older people are healthier, more active and much more likely to still be in the workforce. After all, why should they retire when — with the kids out of the house — they have all the time in the world to devote to a career, without being nagged by their spouses to come home for family dinner? Aging boomers (and in particular the 55-to-64-year-old alpha boomers) make large consumer purchases, and the TV nets are adapting accordingly. For these reasons, today the nets are moving away from the 18- 45 demo; now what brings in premiums are income and education level, so no more demographics but psychographics, which makes sense: Two families can have spouses of the same age, same income and same-age married children, but one could come Thus, after decades of chasing from a Harvard background, the elusive young viewers, the and the other the garbageAmerican broadcast networks “Hello Doctor. Turn on ER. collection business. One are after older viewers. Not I think that’s exactly what I have.” drinks wine, the other beer. that the nets have any other One prefers linen, the other choice. In 2013 the median age polyester. One wears ties and of U.S. TV viewers was 54, up scarves, the other tattoos and nose rings. Obviously, the from 41 in 1993. And, CBS, with its traditional following of program offering has to be different to reflect their different older viewers, has repeatedly ranked as the country’s mosttastes, but the important fact remains that advertisers can watched network. tap into their large disposable income pool. The notion that older viewers were not valuable to advertisers came about years ago for two reasons: The generation that grew up during hard times like the Depression and WWII remained frugal during their old age; and baby boomers comprised most of the TV audience (hence youth-oriented series of the 1970s such as Happy Days and Charlie’s Angels on ABC). Young adults now are too busy with their careers, raising children and/or socializing Naturally, television can still attract young audiences, but with programs that are not for the mass audience, such as MTV’s 16 and Pregnant (now in its fifth season), and Teen Mom, which are so popular among young viewers that they have actually substantially reduced the birthrate among U.S. teenagers. Established by Steve Syatt in 1989, SSA has served the global entertainment community ever since. “SSA’s clients are among the most prestigious international companies engaged in television, film and digital production and worldwide distribution,” according to Syatt (pictured with his son David). He launched his agency after serving in senior executive communications and marketing roles with entertainment studios both in New York City and Hollywood. Syatt also worked in media as a broadcast journalist for radio and TV stations in Los Angeles and Boston. In addition to representing global trade media for its clients, SSA handles the consumer media rollout of new series for broadcast, cable, satellite and digital media. SSA also has experience in kids’ entertainment, having handled the U.S. launch of major children’s brands, while the firm’s consumer media work encompasses primetime series, movies and documentaries. The agency also works in direct response television (DRTV), acting as the public relations home for several prominent players in DRTV, including infomercial marketers such as Canada’s Thane Direct; DRTV production companies, including Santa Ana, California-based Script to Screen (which has over 600 infomcercial campaigns under its belt); DRTV industry monitoring resource The IMS Report and the annual Response Expo Conference and Exhibition. For Syatt, the representation of direct response heavyweights has significant meaning for its full roster of entertainment clients, as direct to consumer — through the advent of social media and the Internet — has evolved into a major component for entertainment suppliers. Increasingly, TV, film and particularly digital content producers are zeroing in on direct-to-consumer distribution channels as part of their business development, and SSA’s experience in direct response has helped several of its entertainment clients navigate D2C opportunities. Headline_ Small_1 Column As SSA enters its next quarter century, Syatt’s son, David, has taken the helm of the agency’s international trade media division. David Syatt began working with his father as a college intern while studying communications at the University of California, Irvine. He joined the agency full-time after graduating in 2008. “We are proud to salute our clients who have come to entrust their public relations to SSA throughout our 25 years and our many media associates,” concluded Syatt. NEM: The Balkans’ Own TV Market D ubrovnik, Croatia, is preparing to welcome for the second time the television industry from the Balkans with an impressive lineup of speakers. From June 10-13, 31 TV executives will tackle 11 topics ranging from binge-viewing to TV advertising at the New Europe Market (NEM). Among the panelists are executives from various regions of the world, including Bruce Tuchman and Marco Frazier from AMC/ Sundance Channel Global; Daniela Matei, CEO Nordics and the Balkans for FremantleMedia; Antony Root, EVP of HBO Europe and Bartosz Witak, VP of CEE and Israel for Viacom. Housed at Dubrovnik’s Sun Gardens and Radisson Blue Resort, NEM is organized by the Zagreb-based Mediavision, a PR, marketing and event planning company founded by Sanja Bozic-Ljubicic. Last year NEM registered 250 companies. The Croatian coastal town of Dubrovnik is well served by an international airport, which is 15 km from the center of town.
