Children's Products Segment
i. Factual Background.
Voluminous CPSC recalls of cribs and similar products designed for children to
sleep in, due to material and mechanical failures, posing a threat of strangulation, suffocation,
entrapment and fall hazards.
"CPSC issued a warning last month alerting parents and
caregivers that there can be deadly hazards associated with
drop-side cribs. Nine million drop-side cribs have been
recalled over the past five years. CPSC staff has
determined drop-side cribs generally have a tendency to be
less structurally sound than cribs with four fixed sides.
Drop-side crib incidents can also occur due to incorrect
assembly or age-related wear and tear. Age is a factor in
the safety of any crib. At a minimum, CPSC staff
recommends that you not use a crib that is older than i 0
years. Many older cribs do not meet current voluntary
standards and can have numerous safety problems." CPSC
Recall June 24, 2010, Release #10-270.
"Important Message from CPsC: CPSC reminds parents
not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts.
Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep
the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents
should check to make sure the drop side or any other
moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and
corners of the crib for disengagement. Disengagements can
create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to
repair any side of
the crib. Babies have died in cribs where
repairs were attempted by caregivers. Age is factor in the
safety or any crib. At a minimum, CPSC staff recommends
that you not use a crib that is older than i 0 years. Many
older cribs may not meet current voluntary standards and
can have numerous safety problems." CPSC Recall July

Attleboro, Mass. who suffocated when he became entrapped between the crib mattress and the crib frame. In
addition, CPSC has received reports of 29 incidents involving the Simplicity cribs where the cribs collapsed due to
the metal mattress support frame detaching or bending. These include one child entrapment that did not result in
injury and one child who suffered minor cuts when his head struck the broken mattress support bar. CPSC has
received one report of a consumer who, in April of 2010, removed the Sorelle Prescott label from the crib and
found a Simplicity crib label underneath. (The consumer purchased the crib in July of 2009, prior to the Simplicity
mattress support recalL.)

C& T International/Sorelle Recalls Cribs Due to Strangulation and
Suffocation Hazards
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a
voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise
instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: Drop-Side Cribs
Units: About 170,000
Distributor: C& T InternationaVSorelle, of East Rutherford, New Jersey Before 2003, the company also distributed under the name
Golden Baby Inc.
Hazard: The cribs' drop-side hardware can disengage from the tracks, causing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop-side
partially detaches, it creates space between the drop side and the crib mattress. The bodies of infants and toddlers can become entrapped
in the space, which can lead to strangulation and/or suffocation. Complete detachment of the drop sides can lead to falls from the crib. In
addition, slats can detach from the sides of the cribs. Infants and toddlers can then become entrapped, strangle or fall out of the crib.
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and C& T/Sorelle have received reports of 104 incidents of drop-side and slat detachments in C& T/Sorelle dropside cribs. Six infants received bruises and abrasions to the head, face, torso or leg from becom ing entrapped or falling after the drop side
collapsed. An additional five infants who were entrapped or fell were found by their parents and were not injured.
Description: This recall involves C& T International, Sore
lie and Golden Baby wood cribs. The full-size cribs were sold in natural. white
and cherry finishes. The model number and/or model name is printed on a label affixed to the footboard or headboard under the Caution
statement.
Sold at: Children's product stores and other retailers nationwide from January 2000 through March 2010 for between $300 and $600.
Manufactured in: Italy, Latvia, BraziL. China and Vietnam
Remedy: CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping
environment fortheir baby. Consumers should contact C& T/Sorelle to receive a free replacement kit. For four of the older models of the
cribs -the Hampton, Jackie, Nina and Rita models - the firm may be unable to supply a part to repair the crib and will, instead, provide
consumers with a $100 voucher towards the purchase of another C& T product.
Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact C& T/Sorelle toll-free at (877)791-9398 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET Monday
through Friday or visit the firm's website at www.candtinternational.net

Sold at: Babies R Us, Sears, Burlington Coat Factory, Target, and various specialty stores nationwide between
January 2000 and July 2009.
Remedy: CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to stop using these cribs immediately and find an alternative,
safe sleeping environment for their baby. Do not attempt to fix these cribs. Although Foundations Worldwide
did not manufacture or sell any of the recalled cribs, it has agreed to provide Child Craft owners with a rebate
towards the purchase of a new, fixed-side Child Craft brand crib manufactured by Foundations Worldwide Inc.
Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact Foundations Worldwide toll-free at (866) 614-0557
anytime or visit the firm's website atwww.cribsafetvinfo.com
Important Message from CPSC: CPSC reminds parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts.
Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents
should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and
corners of the crib for disengagement. Disengagements can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not
try to repair any side of the crib. Babies have died in cribs where repairs were attem pted by caregivers. Age is
factor in the safety of any crib. At a minimum, CPSC staff recommends that you not use a crib that is older than
10 years. Many older cribs may not meet current voluntary standards and can have numerous safety problems.
Visit CPSC's Crib Information Center for more information on Crib Safety and Recalls.

CPSC Announces Recall to Repair Child Craft Brand
Stationary-Side Cribs with Dowel Due to Entrapment and
Strangulation Hazards
WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today
announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products
immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: Child Craft brand "Crib 'N' Double Bed" full size stationary-side cribs with dowel
Manufacturer: Child Craft Industries, Inc. (Child Craft ceased operations in July of 2009 and sold the "Child Craft" name
to Foundations Worldwide I nc. of Medina, Ohio) Foundations Worldwide, Inc. neither manufactured nor sold any of the
cribs included in this recalL.
Units: Between 40,000 and 50,000
Hazard: The cribs' stationary side can be assembled upside-down but still appear to be assembled correctly. If assembled
upside-down, the crib side contains a hazardous five-inch gap at the top of the crib. Infants or toddlers can become
entrapped in this gap (as depicted in the photo below), which can lead to entrapment, strangulation or other injuries.
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC has received four reports of children becoming entrapped between the dowel and the crib's
stationary front side. I n two of those reports, the child was trapped by hislher head and was in danger of being strangled.
In the other two reports, the child was trapped by hislher arm. This hazard can occur on both the front and back sides of
the crib.
Description: All Child Craft brand cribs with the foot top dowel (as shown in the photos below) including, but not limited to,
the following models:
Name Model Number(s)
Child Craft convertible cribs F361
01
The name "Child Craft" appears on a label on the crib's frame and identifies the place of manufacture as Salem, Indiana or
New Salisbury, Indiana. These cribs were manufactured by Child Craft Industries, Inc., which is no longer in business.
Sold at: Babies 'R Us and other stores nationwide between January 1998 and June 2009 for between $600 and $650.
Remedy: The CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to examine these cribs immediately and determine whether they
have been assembled properly. The best way to do this is to measure the gap between the front and back sides of the crib
and the dowel that runs parallel to the sides. The gap should be no more than two and three eighths inches (2 3/8"), as
shown in the images below. If the gap is greater than 2 3/8" the side has been installed upside-down and needs to be reassembled. Another indicator that the side has been installed improperly is the appearance of the barrel nut, as is visible
in the image above showing an incorrect assembly. The barrel nut should be at the bottom of the side, not the top. If
either of these conditions are present, the side of the crib has been installed upside-down and needs to be re-assembled
so that the barrel nut is not visible from the top and the gap between the dowel and the side is no greater than two and
three eighths inches (2 3/8"). Consumers with these cribs should contact Foundations Worldwide, Inc., to obtain
instructions and decals to affix to the stationary sides of the crib to ensure proper assembly in the future.
Consumer Contact: For additional information contact Foundations Worldwide toll-free at (866) 614-0557 anytime, or
visit the firm's website at ww.cribsafetyinfo.com
Important Message from CPSC: CPSC reminds parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make
sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to
make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly Always check all sides and corners of the crib for
disengagement. Disengagements can create a gap and entrap a child. At a minimum, CPSC staff recommends that you
not use a crib that is older than 10 years. Many older cribs may not meet current voluntary standards and can have
numerous safety problems.

Infant Entrapment and Suffocation Prompts Stork Craft to
Recall More Than 2.1 Million Drop-Side Cribs
WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Stork Craft
Manufacturing Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, today announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million
Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including about 147,000 Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. The
recall involves approximately 1,213,000 units distributed in the United States and 968,000 units distributed in
Canada.
CPSC urges parents and caregivers to im mediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for the free repair kit, and
do not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit. They should find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their
baby. Consumers should contact Stork Craft to receive a free repair kit that converts the drop-side on these cribs
to a fixed side.
The cribs' drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or parts can become missing. In addition, the drop-side
can be installed upside-down, which can result in broken or disengaged plastic parts. All of these problems can
cause the drop-side to detach in one or more corners. When the drop-side detaches, it creates space between
the drop-side and the crib mattress. The bodies of infants and toddlers can become entrapped in the space which
can lead to suffocation. Complete detachment of drop-sides can lead to falls from the crib.
CPSC, Health Canada, and Stork Craft are aware of 110 incidents of drop-side detachment; 67 incidents
occurred in the United States and 43 in Canada. The incidents include 15 entrapments; 12 in the U.S. and three
in Canada Four of the entrapments resulted in suffocation: a 7 -month-old in Gouverneur N. Y., a 7 -month-old in
New Iberia, La., a 6-month-old in Summersville, W.Va., and a 9-month-old in Bronx, NY. Included in these
incidents are 20 falls from cribs; 12 in the U.S and eight in Canada. Fall injuries ranged from concussion to
bumps and bruises. The cribs involved in these incidents had plastic drop-side hardware that had broken,
missing, or deformed claws, connectors, tracks, or flexible tab stops, loose or missing metal spring clips; stripped
screws; and/or drop-sides installed upside-down.
This recall involves Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. This
recall does not involve any cribs that do not have a drop-side. This recall does not involve any cribs with metal rod

drop-side hardware. It involves only those cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware.
This recall includes Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and
October 2009. This recall also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates
between October 1997 and Decem ber 2004. The Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo were first sold in the
U.S. in July 1998 and in Canada in September 1998. The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The
manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm's name, address, and contact
information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm's
insignia "storkcraft baby" or "storkling" is inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs. In Stork Craft cribs
that contain the "Fisher-Price" logo, this logo can be found on the crib's teething raiL, in the manufacturer's
instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of
the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.
Major retailers in the United States and Canada sold the recalled cribs including BJ's Wholesale Club, J.C.
Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com Babiesrus.com,
Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com from January 1993 through October 2009 for between $100 and
$400.
The cribs were manufactured in Canada, China and Indonesia.
For additional information, contact Stork Craft toll-free at (877) 274-0277 anytime to order the free repair kit, or log
on to www.storkcraft.com
Important Message from CPSC:
CPSC would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make sure to tighten
hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make
sure the drop-side or any other moving part operates smoothly Always check all sides and corners of the crib for
disengagement. Any disengagement can create a gap and entrap a child. I n addition, do not try to repair any side
of the crib, especially with tape, wire or rope.

Delta Recalls to Repair Drop-Side Cribs Due to
Entrapment, Suffocation and Fall Hazards
Consumers also urged to check stabilizer bar assembly to prevent mattress
support collapse
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named
below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled
consumer product.
Name of Product: Delta cribs
Units: About 747,000 drop-side cribs; and all fixed and drop-side cribs using wooden stabilizer bars.
Manufacturer: Delta Enterprise, of New York, N.Y.
Drop-Side Hazard: The cribs' drop sides can malfunction, detach or otherwise faiL, causing part of the drop side
to fall out of position, creating a space into which an infant or toddler can roil and become wedged or entrapped,
which can lead to strangulation or suffocation. A child can also fall out of the crib. Drop-side incidents can also
occur due to incorrect assem bly and with age-related wear and tear.
Mattress Support Hazard: In addition, the wooden stabilizer bars on some Delta drop-side and fixed-side cribs
can be installed upside down, which puts extra stress on the crib and can cause the mattress platform to collapse,
creating a gap in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and posing a risk of strangulation or
suffocation.
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and Delta have received 57 reports involving drop sides that have malfunctioned or
detached, resulting in three entrapments, including two reports of bruises and one child who fell out of the crib.
Additionally, CPSC is aware of 19 reports in which stabilizer bars were installed upside-down, resulting in 10
mattress platform collapses. Two children were entrapped but freed without injury and one child sustained
scratches.
Description: This recall involves Delta drop-side cribs with three different types of drop-side hardware and Delta
cribs with wooden stabilizer bars that support the mattress platform. Consumers should visit
www.cribrecallcenter.com for photographs and models of the affected hardware types and instructions on correct
assembly of the stabilizer bars.
Sold at: Children's product retail stores nationwide and on-line from January 2000 through May 2009 for between
$100 and $300.
Manufactured in: China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Croatia.
Drop-Side Crib Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled drop-side cribs and contact
Delta to receive a free repair kit that will immobilize the drop side. I n the meantime, find an alternate, safe sleep
environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard or toddler bed depending on the child's age.
Mattress Support Remedy: Consumers who have cribs with wooden stabilizer bars supporting the mattress
should inspect the stabilizer bars to ensure they are correctly installed in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions and inspect the joints of their crib for any damage. If the stabilizer bars are installed upside down,
stop using the crib immediately and contact Delta for information on how to correctly install the stabilizer bars or
visit the firm's website at www.cribrecallcenter.com
Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact Delta Enterprise toll-free at (877) 342-3418 between 9
a.m. and 5p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit the firm's website at www.cribrecallcenter.com
Note: More information about the special industry program to provide free immobilization kits
Important Message from CPSC: CPSC reminds parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts.
Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents
should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly Always check all sides and
corners of the crib for disengagement.

Dorel Asia Recalls To Replace Cribs; Pose Strangulation
and Suffocation Hazards
One infant death reported, 10 injuries to infants
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Dorel Asia SRL, of
Barbados, is announcing a voluntary recall to replace drop side and non-drop side cribs that pose suffocation and
strangulation hazards to infants and toddlers. Consumers should im mediately stop using the recalled cribs until
replacement kits are obtained and installed.
Name of Product: Dorel Asia cribs
Units: About 635,000
Distributor: Dorel Asia SRL, of Barbados
Hazard: The drop side hardware can fail causing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side
detaches it creates a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. In
addition, the recalled cribs can pose a serious entrapment and strangulation hazard when a slat is damaged. This
can occur while the crib is in use, in storage, being put together, taken apart or reassembled; or during shipping
and handling
Reports: CPSC and Dare
I Asia SRL received a report of the death of 6-month old child from Cedar Rapids, Iowa
who became entrapped and strangled in a crib after the drop side hardware broke. The crib continued to be used
after the parents tried to repair the drop side themselves. CPSC and Dare
I Asia received reports of 31 drop side
incidents. I n six of those incidents, children were entrapped between the drop side and crib mattress. Three
children suffered from bruises as a result of the entrapment. In addition, CPSC and Dorel Asia received reports of
36 incidents of slat breakage, including seven reports of bruises and scratches to children and two reports of
entrapment that resulted in no injury.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing the recall of all
Generation 2 Worldwide and "ChildESIGNS" full-size and portable drop side cribs CPSC is warning parents and
caregivers who own these drop side cribs that infants and toddlers are at risk of serious injury or death due to
strangulation and suffocation hazards presented by the cribs. CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to stop
using these cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Do not attempt
to fix these cribs.
The crib's plastic hardware can break which can cause the drop side of the crib to detach from a corner of the
crib. When the drop side detaches, it creates a space into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged
or entrapped. When a child is entrapped between the drop side and the crib mattress, it creates a risk of
suffocation or strangulation. I n addition, the crib's mattress support can detach from the crib frame, creating a
hazardous space in which an infant or toddler could become entrapped and suffocate or strangle.
CPSC has received reports of three infants who suffocated when they became entrapped between the crib
mattress and the drop side when the drop side detached. In July 2007 an eight month old child from Newark,
Ohio suffocated when he became entrapped between the drop side and the crib mattress. The drop side of his
crib had detached due to a broken plastic stop tab on the lower track. In October 2003, an eight month old child
from Richmond, Ind. suffocated when he became entrapped between the drop side and the crib mattress. The
plastic hardware on the drop side was broken and allowed the drop side to detach from the crib headboard in one
corner In September 2002, a six month old from Staunton, Va suffocated when he became entrapped between
the drop side and crib mattress. The lower drop side track was missing two screws which allowed it to pull away
from the headboard post and detach.
CPSC has also received reports of 20 other drop side incidents, 12 of which involved the drop side detaching in a
corner of the crib. I n two of these incidents, a child became entrapped. One child suffered bruising from the
entrapment. There are five reports of children falling out of the cribs due to drop side detachment. One child
suffered a broken arm as a result of the falL.
In addition, CPSC has received 8 reports of mattress support detachment in these cribs. Due to the space created
by the detachment, three children became entrapped between the crib frame and the sagging mattress and four
children crawled out of the crib. There was one report of cuts and bruises.
Due to the fact that Generation 2 went out of business in 2005, CPSC has limited information about the cribs.
Although CPSC does not know the total number of units distributed or the years of production, it is believed that
there were more than 500,000 of these cribs sold to consumers. Some of the known model numbers are: 10110X, 10-210X, 21-110X, 20-710X, 64-315X, 26-110X, 90-257X, 20-810X, 46-715X, 64-311X, 74-315X, 21-815X,
21-810X, 20815X, 308154 and 54915. (The "X" denotes where an additional and varying number may appear at

the end of the model number.) However, all Generation 2 Worldwide and "ChildESIGNS" drop side cribs are
included in this recall, including those with other model numbers.
The name "Generation 2 Worldwide" appears on a label affixed to the crib's headboard or footboard. Some labels
identify the place of manufacture as Dothan, Ala. Others identify China as the country of manufacture. The name
"ChildESIGNS" appears on the teething rail of some of the cribs.
The recalled cribs were sold at numerous local furniture and retail stores including Buy Buy Baby, and Kmart and
Walmart stores nationwide for between $60 and $160. Consumers should contact the store from which they
purchased the crib for remedy information, which will vary between a refund, replacement crib or store credit,
depending on the retailer. Consumers are urged to contact CPSC and report any diffculties in obtaining a remedy
from their place of purchase
Important Message from CPSC:
CPSC would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make sure to tighten
hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make
sure the drop-side or any other moving part operates smoothly Always check all sides and corners of the crib for
disengagement. Any disengagement can create a gap and entrap a child. i n addition, do not try to repair any side
of the crib, especially with tape, wire or rope.

GracoCI-Branded Drop Side Cribs Made by LaJobi
Recalled Due to Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named
below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled
consumer product.
Name of Product: Gracoæl-branded drop side cribs made by LaJobi
Units: About 217,000
Manufacturer: LaJobi Inc., of Cranbury, N.J.
Hazard: The drop side hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop
side detaches, a hazardous gap is created between the drop side and the crib mattress in which infants and
toddlers can become wedged or entrapped, posing a risk of suffocation and strangulation. In addition, children
can fall from the cribs when the drop side detaches or fails to lock.
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and LaJobi have received a total of 99 reports of drop side incidents, including
hardware breakage and drop side detachment. There were two incidents in which children became entrapped in
the gap created by the detached drop side. Both children were freed by their caregivers. There were six reports of
children falling due to drop side failure, including one report of a mild concussion.
Description This recall involves LaJobi-manufactured Gracoæl wood cribs. The full size cribs were sold in cherry,
espresso, natural and white finishes. The production date, item number, purchase order number and finish name
is printed on a label affixed to the footboard or headboard. "LaJobi" and the crib model name are printed on a
product sticker located on the stabilizer bar or bottom rail of the crib. Affected models are listed below.

Entrapment, Suffocation and Fall Hazards
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named
below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled

Units: About 130,000
Manufacturer: Jardine Enterprise Ltd., of Taipei, Taiwan

lead to strangulation or suffocation. A child can also fall out of the crib. Drop-side incidents can also occur due to
incorrect assembly and with age-related wear and tear.
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and Jardine have received 47 reports of drop sides that detached or malfunctioned. In

Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents

Simplicity Cribs Recalled by Retailers; Mattress-Support
Collapse Can Cause Suffocation and Strangulation
One Infant Death Reported
WASHINGTON D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing the recall of all
Simplicity full-size cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames. This recall includes fixed-side and drop-side
cribs. These cribs pose a risk of serious injury or death due to entrapment, strangulation, suffocation and fall
hazards to infants and toddlers.
The crib's tubular metal mattress-support frame can bend or detach and cause part of the mattress to collapse,
creating a space into which an infant or toddler can roil and become wedged, entrapped or fall out of the crib.
CPSC has received a report of a one-year-old child from North Attleboro, Mass. who suffocated when he became
entrapped between the crib mattress and the crib frame in April 2008. CPSC is aware of 13 additional incidents
involving the recalled cribs collapsing due to the metal mattress- support frame bending or detaching, including
one child entrapment that did not result in injury, and one child who suffered minor cuts to his head when his
mattress collapsed and he fell out of the crib.
CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to stop using these cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe
sleeping environment for their baby. Do not attempt to fix these cribs.
Due to the fact that Simplicity and its successor, SFCA Inc., are no longer in business, CPSC has limited
information about the num ber of cribs sold. All Sim plicity drop-side cribs have previously been recalled for a
hazard involving the drop side. Simplicity drop-side cribs could still be in use by parents or caregivers who are
unaware of the recalls or by those who received a repair kit to immobilize the drop side from Simplicity when the
firm was still in business. This recall involves ALL Simplicity cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames
regardless of model number.

The name "Simplicity Inc." or "Simplicity for Children" appears on a label on the crib's mattress-support frame
and/or the crib's end panels. The cribs were manufactured in China.
The recalled cribs were sold at Walmart, Target, Babies R Us and other stores nationwide for between $150 and
$300. Consumers should contact the store where the crib was purchased to receive a refund, replacement crib or
store credit.
Important Message from CPSC:
CPSC would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken or loose parts. Make sure to tighten
hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make
sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for
disengagement. Any disengagement can create a gap, which could fatally entrap a child. In addition, do not try to
repair any side of the crib with tape wire, rope or by other means. I nfants and toddlers have died in cribs with
makeshift repairs.

Simplicity Drop Side Cribs Recalled by Retailers Due to
Risk of Death from Suffocation
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named
below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled
consumer product.
Name of Product: Simplicity Drop Side Cribs
Units: About 400,000
Importer/Distributor: Simplicity Inc. and SFCA Inc. of Reading, Pa. (The firms appear to no longer conduct day

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC is aware of one death involving an 8-month-old child from Houston, Texas who
became entrapped and suffocated between the drop side and the crib mattress when a plastic connector on the
drop side broke. The child's death was previouslv reported by CPSC. CPSC also is aware of an additional 25
incidents involving the drop side detaching from the crib. In six of
these incidents, the drop side detached because
the plastic flexible tab deformed or broke. I n four of the drop side detachment incidents, other plastic parts,
including connectors or tracks, deformed or broke. I n two of the incidents, two children became entrapped
between the drop side and the crib mattress. There were no reported injuries.
Description: This recall involves all drop side cribs with a different or "newer" style of plastic hardware from those
cribs recalled in September 2007. This newer style of Sim plicity hardware can be identified by a flexible plastic tab
at the top of the lower tracks. The recalled model numbers include but may not be lim ited to: 8050, 8325, 8620,
8745,8748,8755,8756,8765,8778,8810, and 8994,8995,8996.
Sold at: Department stores, children's stores, and mass merchandisers nationwide from January 2005 through
June 2009 for between $150 and $300.
Manufactured in: China
Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping
environment for their baby. Consumers should im mediately return the crib to the place of purchase for a refund,
replacement or store credit.

Toy Makers Fight for Exemption From
Rules
By ANDREW MARTIN
Is a football mainly for children? What about a Halloween costume or a model train?
None of the above, manufacturers say, as a new federal crackdown on dangerous toys has left some in
the industry cryng foul and not wanting to play.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has been swamped with requests to exempt playtings
from the new regulations, put in place after extensive toy recalls several years ago.
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 gave the commission the job of defining a
"children's product" - which includes such things as toys, clothing and household goods - and
eventually enforcing the act. But coming up with that definition has become so diffcult that the
commission has postponed votes three times.
Another vote is scheduled for Wednesday, but it is unclear if the five commissioners - three
Democrats and two Republicans - can reach an agreement this time. A spokesman for the
commission declined to comment.
Critics of the crackdown argue that it heaps additional costs on small, American-based businesses that
were not responsible for the tainted toys, many of which were made in China for large toy companies.
So many manufacturers want out - even if their arguments may leave some children scratching their
heads.
The Halloween Industry Association, for example, insists "thematic" costumes may not meet the
definition because teenagers and adults like to get dressed up as Superman and Batman, too.
Model train makers point out that that the tyical customer for their locomotives is not a child but a
53-year-old man. The Handmade Toy Alliance maintains that child-size instruments and craft tools
should be exempt because an adult is usually supervsing.
And the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association says that a 30-year-old can share the same
fantasies as a lO-year-old, "of
being Eli Manning and throwing the winning touchdown pass in the
Super Bowl with no time left on the clock." Therefore, it argues, footballs, lacrosse sticks and baseball
bats should be considered "general use products" rather than toys, regardless of their size or the age of
the user.
"The fact that legitimate sporting goods have 'play value' or that users have 'fun' while using a
legitimate sport good is tangential to the well-recognized foundational purposes of these products,"
wrote Bil Sells, the group's vice president, in a letter to the commission. His group "takes the position
that 'size' does not matter."
Rachel Weintraub, director of product safety at the Consumer Federation of America, a consumer
advocacy group that backs the new regulations, said it was important for the commission to clarify
"what the limited gray area is and further narrow that universe." Since the point of the law is to protect
children, she said, the commission should err on the side of children rather than manufacturers.
"I think there is some reasonable ambiguity," Ms. Weintraub said. "But I think that the ambiguous
universe is quite smalL."
The new enforcement was brought about by an influx of tainted toy trains, jewelry and other imports
from China in 2007 that led to a recall of 45 milion toys and other children's products. In the
aftermath, Congress passed legislation giving the safety commission vastly greater authority to
regulate children's products. Among the regulations are more safety testing, additional recordkeeping
and a reduction in the amount of lead that is allowed.
It defined a children's product as one that is "designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of
age or younger." Lawmakers said regulators should consider the manufacturer's statement about the
product's intended use; whether the product's packaging and promotion were geared toward children;
and whether the product was generally recognized as being intended for youngsters.
But even those caveats leave room for interpretation. For instance, the commission suggests that pens
not be considered children's products unless they are embellshed with "childish themes or play value."
In another example, the commission says that a stuffed animal that is part of a Valentine's Day gift "is
likely to be considered a children's product even though it has been combined in a promotion with a
general use or adult product." The reason, the commission says, is that the stuffed animal wil
probably end up in a child's hands.
Critics point to provisions in the law that they deem ludicrous. For instance, a paper clip that is
included in a science kit for schoolchildren would have to be tested for lead. But a teacher can walk
into any drug store and buy a box of paper clips that would not be subject to the same testing.
Similarly, a lamp that is festooned with cartoon characters would have to be tested, but a lamp without
the characters would not.
The industry has had some success in persuading the commission to soften its stance. In the latest
draft of the "children's product" definition, released this month, the commission granted an exemption
to model train makers and a few others.
But the commission refused to give any slack to child-size musical instruments and craft tools. And, as
far as sporting goods were concerned, the draft suggested that size does matter: equipment marketed
to children would be considered children's products. The same goes for Halloween costumes marketed
to children.
The draft proposal has many manufacturers and store owners fuming. Dan Marshall, vice president of
the Handmade Toy Alliance, said the commission "ignored everybody's input, including ours."
"They took a definition that was open to interpretation and added layers of
vagaries," said Mr.
Marshall, who sells handcrafted toys at a shop in St. PauL. "We just all want some clarity on what we
are supposed to do."
