That’s right; it’s our Annual Spring Drive, Saturday, May 10th, 2014. Dust off your M3, M Roadster or favorite Bavarian iron let’s get out on the kind of roads all that expensive machinery was designed for. As promised, this one will be another tour for lots of great roads and outstanding scenery. This year its back to the Northern Colorado Roads. You should plan on spending the whole day away from home. Your return to Denver will be before 5pm, weather and traffic permitting. The tour will start out at Co’s BMW where the groups will gather to enjoy one of our favorite and impressive dealerships. The sales and management staff has been very accommodating —Thank You! And don’t forget to take a few minutes to check out the new M5 sedan (very cool). Here, we will divide the group into four different subgroups so that we can better manage all level of drivers. There will even be a group for “tour” drivers that are along for the social and scenic aspects of the drive, we will have a group that fits your drive goals. The actual drive will begin with a trip north to Laramie following Hwy 287, along the route of the historic Overland Stage coach; we just cover the ground a little faster. After a brief rest-stop in Laramie, we then continue south to Walden for a special buffet feast at the famous “River Rock Café” in beautiful downtown Walden. You will be impressed by their new asphalt parking lot were we can park our “special” cars and the rough hewn logs and rustic interior of this local historic gathering place. 4 ... SPRING 2014 by Gary Odehnal photos Alan Warner After lunch, its south to Rand on Hwy 125 and over Willow Creek Pass. This is one of Colorado’s premier Sports car routes; you really don’t want to miss this road with long sweeping curves, beautiful high alpine meadows and spectacular mountain scenery. Just keep your eyes on the road! It ranks as a must drive in my logbook every year. Then we come back down to earth in Granby where will stop to share some afternoon Ice Cream treats. I can’t decide if I’m in for the incredible drive or all the good food! Come for both and you will be impressed by all the above and the wonderful spring scenery and open roads in Northern Colorado. So clear the board of “Honey Dews” because you really don’t want to miss this drive. The Denver group should plan on leaving the 120th Ave Park and Ride no later than 8:30am. We “lucky” Northern Colorado Homeboys will be meeting the Denver contingent at 9:15am at Co’s for a 10am departure time. In order to hold your lunch reservations, please forward your sign up. Expect lunch to be a soup and sandwich buffet, with a cost of about $1214/person, depending on total numbers. SPRING 2014 ... 5 Oktoberfest 2014 ~ In Our Backyard It will never get any closer than this…Oktoberfest, more affectionately known as O’Fest, will be held at the Beaver Creek Resort, June 16-20, 2014 in Avon, Colorado. In a week long celebration of all things BMW, any BMW member can partake in auto and social events. Here is a few highlights of the events: BMW Foundation Golf Tournament: Whether you are an avid golfer, or a new beginner, you will enjoy the camaraderie of our first annual Foundation Charity Golf Tournament at the Beaver Creek Golf Club. You may rent your clubs, and just pack shoes, and a polo shirt to participate. BMW NA has generously offered the chance to win a new hybrid i8 during our “Hole in One” contest. Other prizes include a 2-year lease of the X5 and a $1000 purchase incentive for each participant. Concours: A concours is not a contest of speed, but of excellence‚ and of course the best-prepared cars garner reward and recognition. But there is room for other members, too—those who think life is too short to spend so much time cleaning, polishing, and re-waxing their cars! For those a little less compulsive than the Q-tip brigades, there is a non-competitive display class, where you can bring your BMW out and show it off without being judged. Autocross: Get ready to compete for the ultimate bragging rights in the Bridgestone Autocross at Oktoberfest! There will only be one king of the asphalt when it comes to autocross—will it be you? O’Fest AX Rules: 1) Have fun—that’s mandatory! 6 ... SPRING 2014 by Janet Kiyota 2) If you get lost in Cone Land, try to get back on course— but check for oncoming cars before you do. 3) This is your opportunity to explore the limits of your car and your abilities, so do it! Odometer Gears TSD Rally: One of the toughest competitions to win at O’Fest is the time-speeddistance rally, as it not only depends on your driving skills, but also your calculation skills. This year’s Odometer Gears TSD Rally will not only follow a spectacular scenic route, but will end at the picturesque Kessler Canyon for a barbecue luncheon. Fun Gymkhana: So what is this thing called a gymkhana? Fun! Fun doing crazy things! An obstacle course with a number of tests requiring a little coordination and the willingness to look as funny as the next guy. Certainly not a technical thing, but something everyone can do and have fun doing. Tech Sessions with Steve Dinan: Join long time club member and sponsor Steve Dinan for a series of three informative tech sessions. We are all intrigued by the science behind car tuning, but no one makes it as understandable and accessible as Steve. If you are interested in performance these sessions are a must do! This will verify the safe condition of your vehicle, especially the parts that will be critical for an event like this. Tech inspection forms can be downloaded from the Chapter web site (www.rmcbmwcca.org). All safety equipment will be checked: tires, brakes, brake fluid, battery hold-downs, seat belts and more. If there is any doubt about the condition of your equipment, have it replaced (new tires are not required or necessarily recommended). The inspection can be completed by your mechanic (expect a charge). DO NOT PUT THIS OFF! Be sure to give yourself time in case something is found that must be fixed. FREE technical inspections are a courtesy at these faciltities. An appointment must be scheduled! SPRING 2014 ... 9 Cone Zone: 2014 Auto-X Update The Rocky Mountain Chapter BMW Club has already kicked off with its annual Car Control Clinic/Autocross School and Autocross Event #1 at Pike’s Peak International on April 26th and April 27th. We had a great turn-out at the CCC and AX school (60 participants) with several new members to the club as well as existing members brushing up on their driving skills. Our advanced Autocross School was lead by a 3-time Autocross National Champion Mark Smith, our Chief of Timing and Scoring. The schools are a great way to get additional seat time as well as tips and driving teachings by experienced autocrossers. We are fortunate to have several National Champions in our chapter, and hopefully some of their knowledge will rub off on the rookies! The autocross program also updated its timing and scoring equipment to a 100% wireless system, which means NO CABLES!! This opens up more course design possibilities, large timing display and easy set-up/tear-down for our autocross crew. The next Autocross event is May 31st at Front Range Airport. Register at rmcbmwcca.motorsportreg.com O’Fest Autocross - The Rocky Mountain Chapter will be hosting and operating the Autocross event for O’Fest in Beaver Creek. It will span 2 days: Thursday, 6/19 and Friday, 6/20. We are looking for volunteers to help run the event(s). If you are interested in helping out, please email Michael Feldpusch (See chapter Staff page for contact 10 ... SPRING 2014 by Michael Feldpusch photo courtesy of BMW CCA information) no later than June 1st. We’ll be giving something special to all our Autocross Volunteers. If you wish to participate in the Autocross, please register for the event at the National BMW CCA website at http://ofest.bmwcca. org/. The O’Fest Autocross is not a part of our local Autocross Summer Event Series. The third event for the Autocross season will be held in Winter Park, the Saturday following O’Fest on June 21st, 2014. If you’ve ever read the fine print at the bottom of our ads you’ve probably noticed that Bimmer Haus has won a Gold Star Award from the Denver/Boulder Better Business Bureau every year since we opened... and we just won another one – our ninth in a row – in addition to once again being awarded the BBB’s highest possible rating of A+! But what is a Gold Star Award and what does winning one really mean? It means the Denver/Boulder Better Business Bureau, of which Bimmer Haus is a member, hasn’t received a single complaint about us since we opened our doors in 2001! Does it mean we’ve never made a mistake? Of course not... I made one just last year. <g> Seriously, we’re all human and everybody makes mistakes once in a while. But what separates a reputable company from a bad one is how they correct their mistakes. We work very hard to be sure that you have a mistake-free experience and to earn your trust. But rest assured that if we do screw up, we will do everything in our power to resolve issues promptly and fairly to achieve your complete satisfaction. But you don’t have to take our word for it... just ask the Better Business Bureau. Rated A+ by the Denver/Boulder Better Business Bureau and winner of our 9th consecutive Gold Star Award for having no complaints since the day we opened! ©2011 Bimmer Haus Performance Group, Inc. • 7233 West 116th Place, Suite A • Broomfield, Colorado 80020 phone 720.566.0521 • nationwide toll free 866.DAS.HAUS • fax 720.566.0523 • email [email protected] www.BimmerHaus.com 5/11 SPRING 2014 ... 11 Club Tech Session at 3Zero3 On the first “wintery” day of Spring the Rocky Mountain Chapter partook in an informative performance tech session hosted by 3 Zero 3 Motorsports (3Z3) at their Wheatridge shop. It had been a while since the club’s last tech event. Well 3Z3 rolled out the red carpet, okay cleaned the shop floors, and welcomed club members old and new with a slew of snacks, sandwiches, beverages and door prizes. About 50 club members from all over the Front Range trekked out on this gray, later snowy, day. At 3Z3 one of their mottos is “factory trained and independently motivated”. This became apparent by looking at the many project cars that were present, including the e28 M5 receiving a brake upgrade. However, standard service work is the mainstay of business; but is just not as interesting to enthusiasts. After 30-45 minutes of mingling we settled in for the main event. Scott Simpson, owner of 3Z3, and his crew of Max and Blake would give us a comprehensive run down on the major areas of BMW performance modifications. He opened the dialog on performance modifications and tuning with the key question “why do we want to do this?” And by doing so what are the impacts of the modification(s). He said their job at 3Z3 is to manage expectations for the client. Nearly everything has its tradeoffs even if it’s just the impact to one’s wallet. Going fast for street tuning and occasional track events is requires a different approach than setting up a racecar. Max, 3Z3’s marketing manager became the event’s ringmaster. He would introduce a performance topic such as, tuning, suspension, or braking laying out a few fundamentals in that area. Then he handed it off to Scot and Blake (3Z3’s e-commerce manager) for a detailed look at what is typically modified. Scott delivered technical details at a level a novice 12 ... SPRING 2014 by Alan Warner photos Steve Hamilton could grasp while connecting it to a more advanced knowledge level. When it came to engine tuning and modifications there are a lot of variables and options. Some points touched upon included ignition timing, cams profiles and throttle sensitivity. There was a good discussion between normally aspirated (NA) cars and forced induction (supercharged and turbocharged) options with the pro’s, con’s and what to expect from each. Suspension modifications were next. Unlike engine tuning, suspension modifications are with you all the time. Often with these changes clients are more interested in appearance—what looks cool. Fortunately most of the time such a change also results in a handling gain whether it is flatter corning or better turn in. Again, it is always a balance and “too much “ suspension change can mask other problems or offset other positive effects. Lastly the two most common and best bang for your buck options when wanting to improve the performance of your BMW, or any car, are tires and brake fluid. These fall into the category of “eventually” they both need regular replacing. So next time new tires are needed consider a set designed for the performance level you desire. A brake fluid change to a higher temperature fluid is probably the cheapest upgrade available. It’s significance is for those who will spend time at high performance driving events or regularly hitting the mountain twisties. As they reiterated tradeoffs are often present. Changing one thing may not make a complete difference. In fact it may require an upgrade in another area to take full advantage of the new benefit. When it comes to “go fast” performance modifications to any BMW it is always about the smiles/gallon the driver receives and not the miles/ gallon. Now is the perfect time to get your car ready for driving fun. The BMW Driving Schools Powered By Winslow BMW.
