Fenton City Council members unanimously
agreed to post its council packets on the
city’s website. Aside from sensitive or confidential material that would be discussed
in closed sessions, information on meeting
agenda items will be available for residents
to view online.
Hearing date set for unsafe building
Because of the unsafe condition of the Waterworks Building at Waterworks Park on Saginaw Street across from the Mill Pond in Holly,
the Holly Village Council has set a date for
a public hearing to discuss tearing it down.
Council president Jeff Miller said preserving
the apparatus, which includes a waterwheel
under the building, was a possibility. The
date for the hearing is Tuesday, Jan 10 in the
council chambers.
Following complaints from residents
concerning archery in residential areas, the
Holly Village Council has adopted through
unanimous vote, archery guidelines for
the village of Holly. The guidelines restrict
archery inside the village of Holly. Someone
wishing to shoot in their backyard must
conform to the guidelines that fit the definition of an “approved range,” or shoot at
ranges provided by Holly Parks and Recre-

to attend a presentation of “Chasing the
Dragon,” at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday,
Dec. 14 at the Lake Fenton High School
auditorium. Sixth-graders and their parents

a presentation for students to make them
aware of the dangers of using drugs with
an emphasis on the increasing number of
deaths by heroin use. If any parent wishes
that their son or daughter not attend, they
are advised to call attendance clerk, Terry

On Tuesday, the council voted unanimously to
retain village attorney Richard Figura for one
meeting per quarter, at the cost of $2,000 annually, or $500 per meeting. Figura normally
attends council meetings upon request as a
cost-saving measure. Village Manager Jerry
Walker said quarterly meetings would help
Figura keep abreast of issues in the village.
They also discussed office hours before
meetings, where Figura could be available for

Argentine Township police received a larceny from an automobile (LFA) complaint
on Dec. 5. A 47-year-old Fenton woman
parked her car in the 8300 block of Pine View
Lake and left it running while she went in the
home for a moment. When she returned
to her vehicle, her purse, containing credit
cards and personal ID was missing. Her
daughter’s backpack, containing schools
book and cash was also missing. There
are no suspects at this time.
Lahring Road break-in
The Argentine Township Police Department
is investigating a breaking and entering,
which occurred in the 7000 block of Lahring
Road. The homeowner told police that on
Tuesday, Nov. 29, when he returned from
work at 3:15 p.m., he noticed several items
missing, including a 40-inch Samsung TV,
Xbox 360 and controllers, and a Dell laptop
computer. No forced entry was observed, as
the garage door and service door were unlocked. There are no suspects at this time.
Vandalism reported on Silver Cove
On Sunday, Dec. 4, Argentine Township police responded to a home in the 7300 block
of Silver Cove to investigate a malicious
destruction of property complaint. The
50-year-old resident reported that someone had just vandalized her Chevy Malibu.
She suspected her neighbor’s 15-year-old
daughter. The officer observed salad dressing, broken eggshells and cottage cheese
on the driveway. The officer contacted the

Holly man arrested on warrant
On Dec. 3, Holly police were dispatched to
the 3300 block of Herrington to investigate a
possible domestic fight. After no response
to knocking on the door, police entered the
home through the front door, which was
unlocked. Once inside, police saw the
woman, who appeared to be in distress.
The woman’s 29-year-old husband was
hiding in the basement. After interviewing
the man and woman, police determined
that they simply had a very heated verbal
argument. A computer check of the man,
however, revealed that he had a warrant for
his arrest from Flint Township. He was transported to the police station for processing
and released when bond was posted.

On Dec. 1, a 75-year-old Holly woman
reported to Holly police that someone had
damaged her vehicle by making scratch
marks with a key. The woman told police
she had no idea who might have caused
the damage; however, she said it might
have occurred while her car was parked in
the back lot by the library on Nov. 30. The
case remains under investigation.

him,” she said. “He’s just a sweetheart.”
Another elderly man calls Walworth
his granddaughter, because she was so
kind to him, even though he couldn’t
give at the time. Now, he donates
frequently. Another retired gentleman
stops by four of five times a day. “It’s
so enjoyable, I like the people.”
Being so approachable led Walworth
to a serious intervention with a person
contemplating suicide. “I just took time
out and talked with him,” she said.
“I told him it wasn’t worth dying.”
She talked him out of intentionally
overdosing. Another man lost his wife
six years ago over Thanksgiving. “We
talked, he cried,” she said. “You get to
know people.”
Even though she gives every single
person a smile and warm greeting,
Walworth said it’s just her job. This is
the attitude that fills her kettle everyday.
She said passerbys are always kind, or
at least respectful.
Early in her career though, she
stopped a robbery from happening at
the Fenton Wal-Mart. She was outside
ringing her bell, and a man parked
repeatedly near the entrance. He went
back and forth several times, and she
knew something wasn’t right. “I’m like,
‘this ain’t right!’”
Walworth said giving is steady
throughout the day, and this season,
people have been generous. “The kettle
helps a lot of families,” she said. People
make it clear they are contributing because they know it’s going to a good
cause.
Not every bell ringer’s heart is in it,
like Walworth’s. She has seen other bell
ringers who are rude or are working
solely for the money. “That’s not what
the job’s all about. It’s about helping
the community,” she said.
For Walworth, being a bell ringer is
personal. One year, the Salvation Army
helped her give presents to her children
one Christmas. There wouldn’t have
been presents without them, she said.
Every so often, Walworth thinks
about working somewhere else, but she
keeps coming back. “I just love my job,
I look forward to it every year.”

was suspected and the girl was taken to
the hospital and later released.
More than 100 young people were
reportedly at the Sahouris’ home in the
evening, many of whom scattered when
police and emergency responders arrived.
The couple maintained that they did
not know individuals under the age of 21
were drinking during the party until the
incident with the unconscious 16-yearold girl. Based on their investigation,
Argentine Township issued the couple
citations in August for allowing the drinking to take place on their property.
Attorney Mike Manley took over the
couple’s case in October and was determined to contest the charge.
Manley said his office conducted their
own investigation and gathered witness
statements, which they then turned over to
the prosecutor’s office. Prosecutor David
Leyton reviewed the evidence that Manley
presented as well as what investigators
submitted. There was a sharing of evidence.
After reviewing everything, Manley
said the prosecutor’s office indicated it
did not have enough evidence for a conviction. “It shows the integrity of David
Leyton,” Manley said. “We commend the
prosecutor’s office for handling this in an
ethical and professional way.
“It’s the way the court system should
work.”
Manley acknowledges that teen drinking
is a very big issue, but that it was his job
within the legal system to defend the Sahouris. “I never felt they were guilty and after
getting to know them, justice was served.
“I can tell you they are elated with the
decision and they look forward to moving
on with their lives.”
John Potbury, special assistant prosecuting attorney said, “After reviewing all
available evidence, we have determined
we cannot sustain our burden of proof.”

Holiday favorites
Some traditions are holiday staples,
including the green bean casserole,
which debuted in 1955 by Campbell Soup Company to promote
its cream soups. Another holiday
snack tradition that debuted in 1955
was Chex Party Mix, a combination
of Wheat Chex, Rice Chex, and
Corn Chex, nuts, pretzels and a
dressing of melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, and onion and
garlic powders. The treat remains a
popular holiday snack today.
In large bowl, with electric mixer
at medium speed, beat butter
with sugar until light and fluffy. Dough will be
stiff. Cover dough and refrigerate for several
hours. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Divide
dough into two parts. Refrigerate until
ready to roll out. On lightly floured surface,
roll out dough to 1/3-inch thick. Using
2-inch star cookie cutter, cut out shapes.
Place 1-inch apart on un-greased cookie
sheet. Bake cookies 25 minutes or until
light golden. Cool on wire rack. Yield:

frozen and used as needed. Let stand at
room temperature about 15 minutes before

1/3 to 1/2 lbs. sirloin or flank steak per
person
1 (14 oz.) can beef broth
¼ c. soy sauce
¼ c. sherry
3 green onions, sliced
1 clove garlic, minced
½ t. ground ginger
PREPARATION:
Slice beef thinly into bite-size pieces. Set
at room temperature for 30 minutes. Blot
dry with paper towel. Combine remaining
ingredients. Pour into fondue pot. Set at 350
degrees and bring broth to a boil.
For serving, spear a slice of beef and place
in boiling liquid, cooking for 2-3 minutes or
until desired doneness.

Co. has made its secret formula

I have a 1990 Grand Prix 3.1(nonturbo). When my engine is started
I get this extra loud whistle from
the engine. It seems to be around the EGR
valve. I thought it was busted so I changed
it. I put the new one on and still a whistle.
I’m not sure if it is a bad vacuum leak
or not, but it seems like that is the only
thing that it could be since I’ve already
changed the EGR valve. Could the EGR
hose have a leak or PVC? The noise is
literally unbearable. I’ve also noticed that
my heat barely comes out of the defrost.
It’s a light breeze and when switched to
vent nothing comes out. Any suggestions
or tips would help a lot!! Thanks.- Thomas

Thomas, This definitely sounds like
a vacuum leak to me and should
be an easy find. Try pouring some
water over the suspected area while the car
is running. When you get to the leak you
will notice that the sound changes and you
should see it pulling the water in. Do not over
do the water because if the vacuum leak is
large enough it could pull in too much water
and hydro-lock the engine! As far as the heat
problem, this could be caused by the vacuum
leak as well and fixing one may cure both.

hosts toy drive
Joe Bommarito and his wife Laura
are hosting their fourth annual toy
drive, at all three of their Wireless Zone
stores in Ortonville, Frankenmuth, and
Fenton. Every family that donates an
unwrapped toy in its original packaging, worth $10 or more gets one free
Bluetooth headset. The toy drive will
go through Dec. 20.
“We’re excited about the fact that
with each new store, we’ve been able
to exponentially increase our ability to
give back,” said Bommarito. “The past
three years have been hugely successful. We now have three stores to collect
toys for three different local charities.”
Bommarito said the charity
doesn’t stop at the toy drive for his
Wireless Zones. A portion of the
stores’ commission goes to a special
foundation run by Wireless Zone’s

‘How many hours do you expect to
spend fighting during your life together?’ I asked the prospective bride and
groom sitting across the desk from me.
Surprised, they laughed. Not many
who plan for marriage talk about the
time they may lose in coming battles.
Perhaps if they did, there would be
fewer home breakups.
A woman speaking to me on the phone
blurted, ‘I’m disgusted with you.’
‘That’s a terrible waste of time,’ I
replied, kindly, in an effort to remind
her that time is too precious to waste in
useless anger and conflict.
A dying queen is said to have cried,
‘Millions in money for an inch of time.’
How many of your remaining hours
do you expect to spend in a negative,
critical or depressed mood?
Is this a needless question?
Perhaps not. You may even enjoy
being down or down on others but there
is a better way to live.

‘Sounds good,’ you may be thinking,
but how does one achieve this positive
peace of mind? What’s the secret of living peacefully?

•1/2 lb. chopped cooked chicken breast
•1 1/2 c. egg noodles
•1 c. sliced carrots
•1/2 t. dried basil
•1/2 t. dried oregano
•salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
In a large pot over medium heat, melt butter. Cook
onion and celery in butter until just tender, 5 minutes.
Pour in chicken and vegetable broths and stir in
chicken, noodles, carrots, basil, oregano, salt and
pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer
20 minutes before serving.

OUTING A SORE SPOT FOR NOSEY DOG
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This weekend I took my
dog “Marty,” a dachshund-beagle mix, out to some
property, where she sniffed and sniffed and dug and
sniffed and sniffed. I think she had her nose buried
in the rocky soil for so long that she gave herself a
rather large (maybe the size of a nickel) blister on her
upper lip. It’s not puffy -- just a raw patch under her
nose, and she licks at it. I saw something saying that
canola oil or olive oil might help chapped lips, but
this seems like a larger area. Any tips?

DEAR MATT: First, I have to caution that it’s always
wise to consult your dog’s vet. With that out of the way,
I’d say the best thing to do would be to treat the raw
patch like you would a blister or a raw patch on your own
nose. Keep the area clean, rub a bit of Neosporin over it
two or three times daily and watch it closely.
Marty probably will lick off the antibiotic ointment
within a minute or two of application, but in such small
quantities it isn’t a problem to ingest. A Band-Aid
probably will cause more discomfort and trouble than it
prevents. You also can ask your vet for topical medicine
to reduce any discomfort and thereby reduce her licking
of the area so it can heal faster.
If it is indeed just a raw patch caused by friction, the
area should heal up within a few days. But do keep a
close eye on it: If the patch looks like its getting infected
or otherwise changes for the worse, take Marty to the vet
right away.

DEAR MOM: If you or your daughter watched any
of the popular TV cooking competition shows, you’ll
note that the best cooks clean as they go. In fact, it can
be hard to enjoy a meal when the kitchen is a disaster
area looming on the other side of the dining room door.
You should suggest to your daughter that part of the
cook’s job is to leave the kitchen in a decent state —
with the cooking bowls and implements either washed
or stacked neatly and with the counters wiped down.
If the cooking area is left tidy, the cook has the
advantage of lingering slothlike at the end of the meal
while others take care of the after-dinner dishes.
Simply tell your daughter you enjoy the fruits of
her labor but that cleanup is part of cooking and no
one else will do it for her.
You could give her a boost by working with her
once to show her how it’s done.
DEAR AMY: My 14-year-old daughter has
a Facebook page. Recently a good friend of
hers created a “fake” Facebook page using an
abbreviated form of my daughter’s name. My
daughter found out because a search of her
name turned up this other page.
By looking at the photos posted it was quite
obvious who had done this. This girl used some
very nasty language and said some very nasty
things.
Needless to say, my daughter was very upset
and hurt that her friend would do this.
I contacted the parents and the next day
they brought the girl to our house to apologize.
They asked me not to tell anyone.
I think they are more worried about their reputation than why their daughter would do this
to a girlfriend. The girl has not been punished
and is still on Facebook.
My daughter no longer talks to the girl, but
our worry is that she will do it again.
Any advice?

DEAR NO FAN: Creating this fake Facebook page
was hostile, malicious and bullying. So far the parents
have handled this well by bringing the girl to your
home and facing the issue personally.
You are not obligated to keep this silent just because they asked you to. Your response to this request
should have been, “I understand your point of view,
but we’ll have to do what we think is best.”
Many schools have extended their no-bullying
policies to cover online behavior. You should take this
incident to the school and say exactly what happened.
Tell the school official that the parents brought
the child to your home to apologize. If you feel this
apology is sincere and sufficient and think the matter
should be closed, you should say so.
The school should be notified because this might be
a pattern they are seeing with this child or others in her
grade. If it happens again they will know it is not a first
offense and can react appropriately.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am recuperating from a
kidney infection (pyelitis). The doctor did a culture
of my urine, which showed a gram negative rod.
What kind of infection is that? — S.B.
ANSWER: The more common urinary tract infection is
infection of the bladder — cystitis. Pyelitis (PIE-uh-LITEiss), now usually called pyelonephritis, is an infection
of the kidney itself. It is a much more serious infection,
and one that usually makes people take to their bed.
Pyelitis causes high fever often alternating with chills.
People have intense flank pain, the side area between
the lowest rib and the upper part of the pelvis. The infection also might make people urinate more frequently
and with pain. These two signs, however, are more apt
to indicate bladder infection.
The most frequent cause of pyelitis is the bacterium
E. coli. Bacteria are classified into two large groups
based on how they react to a stain used to visualize
them with a microscope. The stain is the Gram stain,
named after the doctor who devised it. Bacteria are
either gram positive or gram negative. A gram positive
bacterium turns blue with the stain; a gram negative
turns red.
Bacteria also are classified by their shape. Some are
elongated sticks — rods. Others are oval-shaped. E.
coli is a gram negative rod.
Pyelitis is a situation that calls for immediate and
usually intravenous antibiotic treatment. It responds
promptly to such treatment. The temperature often
returns to normal within two days.

both upper urinary tract infections (kidney — pyelitis)
and lower urinary tract infections (bladder — cystitis).

Lake Fenton’s varsity boys basketball
team, which only returns one player from
last year’s team, had its roster get some
varsity experience on Monday.
In its season opening game, Lake Fenton trailed early but then put together a
pretty nice rally in the fourth quarter before losing 46-42 to Elkton-Pigeon-Bay
Port Laker Tuesday night.
Lake Fenton trailed 22-13 at the half,
and only saw the deficit get larger when
Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker outscored
the Blue Devils 17-14 in the third quarter.
However, in the fourth quarter the Blue
Devils cut into that 39-27 gap. A 12-2 Lake
Fenton run put the Blue Devils down just
41-39 with about four minutes left. However, that’s as close as the Blue Devils got.
“We came out a little scattered in the
first half, but settled down in the second
and played solid basketball,” Lake Fenton
coach Matt Furey said. “We had a lot of
one and out possessions. We sat a couple of
our big guys because of foul trouble in the
second half and consequently took a hit on
our rebounding. We played hard, got after
them and tightened up in the fourth quarter
as our defense was our best offense.”

Lake Fenton 32
The Blue Devils were tied 18-all at the
half, but Gabriel Richard outscored Lake
Fenton 20-10 in the third quarter, helping
spark the win.
Sidney Scott led Lake Fenton with 10
points, while Mackenzie Gottron had eight
points. Gabriel Richard had three doubledigit scorers with Taylor Hinkson leading
the way with 14 points.

Fenton wrestlers
open season
with two wins

Fenton — The Fenton varsity
wrestling team had five wins all of last
season.
The Tigers already have two wins
this year after an impressive season
opener, defeating Port Huron 51-30
and Fordson 63-12.
“We are a pretty good young team.
Starting at home, it was good to see
emotion from the crowd,” said Fenton
coach Bruce Burwitz. “Enthusiasm
creates momentum. We have some
good numbers. Everybody teaching
them the same (things) from youth to
high school has helped. We are getting
ready for the Metro League season,
which has no easy matches and some
quality wrestlers.”
Eight grapplers were double-winners for the Tigers on Wednesday.
They were Matt Acton (125), Chase
Roney (130), Bryce Roney (145), Jacob Wykes (135), Bo Brancheau (140),
Conner Kovacs (152), Preston Wetzel
(160) and Logan Bowlby (171).
The opening match with Port Huron
was a battle of scoring streaks. The Tigers roared out of the gates for a 27-0
lead as the first four Tigers earned
victories. Roney began the streak and
it was continued by Conner Kovacs,
Wetzel and Bowlby. However, Port
Huron then recorded four straight pinfall wins and a forfeit victory, earning
a 30-27 lead.

Polar Water Ski attracts 30 brave participants

Some years there has been ice that
had to be broken up to do it.
Some years it’s the choppy waves that
make the day an adventure.
But one thing is certain — for 30
years people have enjoyed taking part of
Silver Spray Sports’ annual Polar Water
Ski event. This year was no exception.
Silver Spray Sports owner Patti Smith
said about 30 skiers showed up to this
year’s event on Dec. 3.
“We had about 30 skiers and they
started at about 11 and continued until quarter after two,” Smith said. “We
had people in everything from drysuits
who were completely warm and cozy, to
people in bathing suits who were completely freezing.”
The event isn’t a competition. It’s
just a chance to water ski one last time
before winter takes over Silver Lake.
While some years ice is an issue, this
year it wasn’t. However, the day did
have its share of challenges.
“The water was kind of choppy,”
Smith said. “There was quite a bit of
wind and the water was a bit rolly and
rough. But it didn’t deter them. They
were out the whole time.”
The group even did a pyramid during
the event.
Smith said the key is remaining out
of the water as much as possible before
you enter the water. The more you hit
the water early, the tougher the skiing
becomes.
“Some ponds are already freezing and
melting in the afternoon,” Smith said.
“We are on the edge of 32-degree water.
The whole goal is to take off on the dock
and ski as close to the shore as possible.
Some people fall right off the bat and are
very cold right away.”

pinfall wins.
“My match didn’t go like I wanted.
I got took down, but I came up and got
the pin with five seconds left in the
first period,” Brancheau said. “We had
to improve some and I have the feeling
we will do good this year.”
Brancheau, who didn’t wrestle last
year, is the brother of Connor Brancheau, a state champion at Lake Fenton
last year.
“No one pressures me but with my
brother,” Brancheau said, “I feel like I
need to be a state champion.”
Wetzel, a senior, had two first-round
pins with one taking just 25 seconds.
“I think that is the quickest pin I
have ever had. I just wanted to get it
done as early as possible,” said Wetzel. “I want to improve my record and
make state. I was one match away from
making it last season.
“I am excited about the team this
year. We have trust in everybody to get
it done when we need it. We are more
competitive in the wrestling room. We
have good team numbers like Fenton
used to have.”
In the second match, Kovacs (152)
got things started with a pin in 5:32.
Wetzel followed with a pin and then
Bowlby had a fall, giving Fenton an
18-0 lead. Fenton would never trail.
Fordson cut the gap to 18-12, but Fenton’s Carl Coster (285) earned a pin,
collecting eight straight wins.
Fenton wrestled at the Corunna Invitational Saturday. The Tigers travel
to Carman-Ainsworth High School on
Wednesday.

Tigers’ pressure sparks 58-51 win vs. Milford

Fenton — Fenton coach Brad DeWitt
has said it a few times already.
If the Fenton varsity girls basketball
team is going to be successful, they are
going to have to create turnovers and transition hoops.
The Tigers (1-2) did just that on Tuesday night.
Fenton collected 15 steals and won a
58-51 non-league contest against Milford.
“I liked the intensity on defense,” DeWitt said. “We bring a lot of intensity and
aggressiveness that creates issues for the
other team. They always have to be prepared for our constant pressure. That’s
what we are doing this year from one end
of the court to the other. Right now we are
having some fairly good success with it.”
Fenton gradually took a lead in the first
half, using a 17-10 second-quarter edge to
pull ahead 29-21 at the half. However, the
Tigers had a third-quarter lull and actually
trailed 37-35 entering the final period.
But the Tigers took control in the
fourth. And once they had the lead, they
iced the game at the free-throw line, by
hitting 13-of-18 free throws in the final
eight minutes.
“We made a lot of free throws,” DeWitt
said. “They did a nice job in the fourth
quarter with the free throws. That was
very good.”
Hannah Evo led the Tigers with 16
points and six rebounds, while Julie Gilbert netted 15 points. Jailen Judson had
seven points, all from the charity stripe
where she made 7-of-9 shots. Sarah Collier chipped in six points and a team-high
seven rebounds. Payton Maxheimer also
had six points.

“I like the depth,” Pluta said. “We are
probably going to be able to field a pretty competitive ‘B’ team again this year.
That’s going to help us because we can
mix and match some kids like we did tonight. We had some good kids graduate,
but we have kids that were competitive
behind them that couldn’t crack the lineup
last year, who people don’t know are pretty good; kids like Kyle Pepper and Andrew Scott. Those are solid kids. They’ve
been wrestling through our youth program
and middle school. Those kids graduating
opened up spots for them this year.”
The Bronchos made reasonably easy
work out of their first two regular-season
foes. Six wrestlers finished the day with
2-0 records, and others won their only
match they wrestled.
Scott (215) is off to a strong start, winning both of his matches with first-period
pinfalls. Zack Jones (135) also earned two
first-period pinfall wins. Trevor Hatfield
(103), Mason Cleaver (130), Gonzales
(140) and Andrew Scott (152) also finished with 2-0 marks. Pepper (145) won
his only match by pinfall,
The Bronchos would love to make it to
the MHSAA Team Wrestling State Meet
for a second straight season this year.
“We’d be the first team to ever make it
to state two years in a row,” Gonzales said.
“We have a legitimate shot of making it,
so that’s our main goal for this year. It’s
going to take a lot of hard work, and not
making stupid mistakes. Some of the new
guys who aren’t used to varsity matches
might make rookie mistakes that they
could get away with on JV. They need to

learn they won’t on varsity.”
“It would be amazing to go again,”
wrestler Gibson said. “I have high expectations this year for our team. I want to be
at least in the state semifinals this year.
That would be nice.
“It’s going to take a lot of hard work
and a lot of effort. But if everyone plays
a role like they have in the practice room
during the last couple of weeks, I think we
will do it.”
Holly competed in a tough East Kentwood tournament on Saturday.
“On paper we are one of the best teams
in the area. Now we just have to keep
working hard in the room and prove it,”
Pluta said. “We can’t think we are just
going to do this and that and become fast
and sassy. That’s why we are going into
this tournament this weekend with a lot of
ranked teams. It will be good for us because we can measure where we are at so
when we come back (from break) we can
get ready for the league season.”
