Do you have a 401K with an old employer?
If you retire from a company, switch jobs or your company is bought out, there are many
things that you need to consider.
1. Your 401K has several choices in where you can move it
a. Leave at old plan
b. Move to another plan
c. Rollover to an IRA
d. Consider the age 55 exception
e. Consider NUA (Net Unrealized Appreciation)
*If your company plan includes highly appreciated company stock, consider withdrawing the stock and rolling
the rest of the plan assets over to an IRA. This way you’ll pay no current tax on the NUA or the amount rolled
over to your IRA. The only tax you’ll pay would be on the cost of the stock when acquired by the plan.
2. Pensions
a. When to turn it on
b. How to think about spousal continuation
c. Is there a lump sum option?
i. Taking the lump sum may not be a wise choice
*A pension buyout should be evaluated within the context of your overall retirement picture. If you are
presented with this option, consult an expert who can give you unbiased advice about your choices.
*If you decide to take a lump sum in lieu of monthly pension payments, you may want to consider rolling it
over into an IRA. A direct rollover from your employer’s plan to your IRA provider (trustee to trustee) will
not be subject to immediate taxation and may be the best way to preserve a tax-deferred status of this money.
3. Be careful in making your decisions
*Individuals who are ex-employees always receive better service and more personal attention from financial
advisors than from some inexperienced phone rep at the firm the company plan has been outsourced to.
*Everyone’s circumstances are different. What is right for your friend, neighbor, coworker or relative may not
be right for you.

Women Winning at Life
Women and Wealth: Take Control of Your Financial Life
by KATE FURLONG
Last week, GoGirl Finance sponsored a “Women and Wealth Seminar”, emphasizing from the outset that
women are less likely than men to actively plan their finances. Despite the fact that women hold more than half
of the country’s private wealth and make the majority of a household’s purchasing decisions, they tend to push
financial decisions to the side, often relying on someone else – a spouse or a parent – to handle them.
Fortunately, women events break down the barriers and encourage women to take the helm.
A key part of getting on top of one’s finances is considering how to handle both immediate, and future,
financial issues and decisions. As such, GoGirl Finance broke the attendees into groups to discuss questions
such as:
 What would you do if you had a $5k emergency?
 Do you see money as a taboo subject?
 What are your top two financial goals and how long will it take for you to achieve them?
 What is your definition of retirement?
After everyone had deliberated and shared stories, GoGirl Finance reconvened the group to highlight the most
important things women should be cognizant of when addressing their finances.
Things to Consider When Planning for the Future
1. Longevity: Not only do women live longer, but a majority of women will also spend time out of the
workforce raising children meaning they have to play catch up with retirement savings.
2. Rising Costs: With the rising costs of food, education and just about everything else, it’s important to
realize that your money will need to grow over time just to support your current lifestyle.
3. Market Uncertainty/Volatility: Women need to invest to grow their assets. Even though market
uncertainty may scare people, investing in the stock market is still one of the best methods for creating
wealth.
Gregory Ricks and Associates plans to sponsor a Women Winning at Life event in 2015 to help break down the
barriers and help women feel more comfortable with their finances through retirement.
