Gratitude
Your gifts to the Community Foundation of NCW are
shaping communities and improving our quality of life
in many ways.
Some of you are supporting art and music
opportunities so that all citizens have a chance to be
moved by a live performance, enjoy community art, or
see a child learn an instrument.
Some of you are helping people in need - sheltering
our homeless, bringing care to our seniors, feeding the
hungry, and helping fire victims recover.
Some of you are protecting our environment by
stewarding public lands, reducing waste, and rescuing
abandoned, helpless animals.
Some of you are helping to improve education
opportunities for our youth, from preschool to high
school to college.
But all of you are making a difference.
You are the Community Foundation. Thank you for
investing in your community for good - for ever.

Your Gifts at Work
How Community Foundation Grants Are Awarded
Through many types of funds established by your gifts, the Community Foundation awards
grants to support nonprofit agencies in North Central Washington and beyond.
The Community Grants Program is comprised of competitive grants that provide nonprofit
agencies in Chelan, Douglas, and Okanogan county the opportunity to seek funding to
support charitable work in their community. This is often the only source of grant funding
available to many nonprofits in our region.
Designated Funds Provide annual, recurring gifts to one or more nonprofit organization,
church, or public agency that the donor wishes to support.
Donor Advised Funds Like a “charitable checking account”, donors can give to any
nonprofit organization, church, or public agency anytime they want. Typically Donor Advised
Funds respond to needs in the community and/or support causes the donor cares about.
Field of Interest Funds Donors who choose to support a specific area of interest - such
as education, environment, or the arts - choose a field of interest and allow the Community
Foundation to choose the grant recipients.
Methow Valley Fund Gifts to the Methow Valley Fund support an annual competitive
grant program that provides funding to nonprofit organizations whose work dedicated to the
Methow Valley.
For Good, For Ever Fund Unrestricted gifts to this fund support the Regional Impact Grant
program, a competitive grant available to nonprofits in Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan
counties. In addition to grantmaking, gifts to this fund support the Nonprofit Practices
Institute.

Apple Hill Art Camp
Serving over 250 youth each summer in
Okanogan County, the Apple Hill Art Camp
provides art instruction in a county where art is
not a part of the regular school curriculum. This
program exposes children to various mediums
of art including painting, sculpture, and textile
projects. Their grant helped to support a new
leadership teaching program where older
students have an opportunity to teach classes
to younger students and learn how to manage
the camp. The camp is only $5 day and is
taught by professional artists. Scholarships are
available for students who are unable to pay
Green Okanogan
Recycling is not a service provided to many
Okanogan County residents. Green Okanogan
is an all-volunteer recycling center in Tonasket,
that provides recycling services for Tonasket
and nearby communities. GO is innovative
with their partnerships: their cardboard buyer
recycles material into apple trays; they store
firewood for the Fire Relief and Recovery
Network; and they work with Okanogan
Community Action Council to turn shipping
containers into living spaces for homeless vets.
Through a grant from the foundation, they
were able to purchase a forklift to move large
pallets of recycled material - a very important
asset in managing recycled goods!
Diversity Justice Day for Youth
Established in 2007, Diversity Justice Day
for Youth is an annual event in Wenatchee
that reaches out to local minority students
seeking careers in the law and justice system.
Nearly 300 students attend to participate in
interactive sessions with law enforcement
officers, lawyers, judges, correction and
probation officers, legal clerks, and other
law and justice careers. A grant from the
foundation helped provide funds for the
organization’s first scholarship that will be
awarded to a senior attending the event.

Partners in Giving
Supporting a Culture of Community Philanthropy
Partners in Giving (PIG) provides general support of the foundation in many ways. Each
year, the Partners in Giving fund is expended to meet various needs of the foundation, such
as funding an additional grant, boosting scholarship awards, supplementing the Nonprofit
Practices Institute, and providing general operating support. We are so grateful for our PIGs
and their commitment to help continue the foundation’s work throughout the region!

Fire Relief Efforts
NCW Fire Relief Fund Brings Aid to Wildfire Victims
The Carlton Complex Fire was, at the time, the largest wildfire our region had ever
experienced. Over 300 structures were destroyed, leaving many families and individuals
homeless. The Community Foundation established the NCW Fire Relief Fund, providing a
vehicle for charitable giving for those who wanted to provide financial support to people
in need. The fund raised over $443,000 in FY2015 from public donations. We gratefully
acknowledge donations from over 750 individuals, families, and businesses that supported
the recovery for fire victims through the NCW Fire Relief Fund.
NCW Fire Relief Fund
The 2015 wildfires left over 150 families
homeless, and hundreds of structures were
completely destroyed. Establishing the
NCW Fire Relief Fund was the first time the
foundation has embarked on providing a
charitable vehicle to support disaster relief.
Your response has resulted in thousands of
donations received to support those in need.
Disaster Case Managers
To provide victims with an advocate and
someone that could help determine their
needs, the Community Foundation of NCW
was able to employ four Disaster Case
Managers. They made direct contact with
those affected - often traveling to rural places
across the county to let them know that help
was available and connect them to resources
such as food, temporary housing, and
establishing a plan to rebuild.
Rebuilding and Recovering
Your Community Foundation partners with
several agencies to assist wildfire victims. Both
the Okanogan Complex Long Term Recovery
Group and the Okanogan County Community
Action Council work to coordinate volunteers
and resources for fire victims. Recovery can
take several months to several years. Because
of your donations, we are able to help support
these efforts as well as funding other needs
necessary for victims to rebuild their lives.

Annual Summit
Each year in May, the Nonprofit
Practices Institute (NPI) hosts a daylong conference in Chelan, Washington
serving 150-200 board, staff, and
volunteers of nonprofit organizations.
Locally and nationally known speakers,
panelists, and facilitators provide insight
and and best practices on various topics
concerning nonprofit management,
including: board governance,
fundraising, financial management,
leadership, marketing, and more.
Joan Alway (pictured at top left with
CFNCW Executive Director, Beth Stipe)
recently retired her position as Executive
Director of the Icicle Fund who parnters
with the foundation for all NPI events
and activities. Joan helped to establish
NPI and develop it into the outstanding
training program that it is today. We are
grateful for Joan’s contributions to NPI
and to her community!
Board Celebration Dinners
The Annual Board Celebration Dinner
recognizes those who spend their
time, talents, and treasure to support a
nonprofit organization in their community.
We know the time, dedication, and
commitment required to help an
organization achieve its goals and move
its mission forward. This celebration,
hosted at both Sun Mountain in Winthrop
and Sleeping Lady in Leavenworth,
honors that service to community.
Norm Smith, Senior Fellow with the MJ
Murdock Charitable Trust and President
Ermitus of The Ford Family Foundation,
joined us as speaker for the Board
Celebration Dinners. Norm addressed the
group on the power of collective impact:
nonprofit organizations working together
to tackle their communities’ issues more
effectively. (Pictured L-R: Denise Sorom,
