On October 7, 2014, some ten days before Opening Night, the ECHL underwent a seismic change when the league accepted seven new members, each of whom had previously played in the nowdefunct Central Hockey League. One of those new teams was not only based east of the Mississippi River, but also north of Lake Ontario: the Brampton (Ontario, Canada) Beast, who are only the second Canadian-based team in ECHL history. And, tonight, the Royals play their first of what will ultimately be five regular season games this year against the Beast, who are in the Central Division of the Western Conference. Despite the fact that this is the first match-up ever for Reading against Brampton, tonight’s game may have a bit of a feeling of familiarity for long-time Royals’ fans, who are well-versed in the skill level of several players on the Beast roster, including the Donati twins, Tyler and Justin, who were so dominant as members of the Elmira Jackals a couple of seasons ago, as well as Chad Painchaud, who played for Reading in the 2011-12 season. Royals fans will also be familiar another former Royal in the building tonight—Malcolm MacMillan, who is the team’s all-time leader in penalty minutes and will be inducted into the organization’s Wall of Honor this evening. Everyone in the building—in this our annual Pink in the Rink Celebration— should also be familiar with the pink hue to everything in the building, including the ice itself and the Royals’ jerseys, which will be auctioned after the game to benefit Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County. We also want to thank Sweet Street Desserts for the pink bag giveaway. LAST TIME OUT READING @ WHEELING (Loss, 5Friday, January 9, 2015 5-6) For the fourth time in four tries for the Royals at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia, the team came up on the wrong side of the score sheet—and for the third time in that building this season the Royals blew a lead (actually three leads in this one) to get there. In fact, Reading led 10, 2-1, and 3-2; but three straight goals in a span of 1:33 late in the second period by the Nailers put the nail in the Royals’ six game road win streak. BRAMPTON @ ELMIRA (Loss, 1Friday, January 9, 2015 1-4) The Jackals struck fifty-seven seconds into this one and then added short-handed and power play goals in the second to build a 3-0 lead before Brampton defenseman Matthew Maione broke up the shutout bid of Jackal goaltender Travis Fullerton late in the second period. The Jackals answered in short order to rebuild the three goal advantage and held on down the stretch to spoil the return performance of the Donati twins to their old stomping grounds. HEIDELBERG COUNTRY CLUB SHOTS OF GAME • Pat Mullane scored the first goal of the game last night—his second ‘fg’ of the year—and picked up an assist on the Royals’ third goal of the game (by Matt Hatch) to record his team leading 9th multi-point game of the season. Mullane leads the Royals with 32 points (12g-20a) in 33 games. • Matt Hatch scored his first pro penalty shot goal in last night’s game to give Reading a 2-1 lead in the first. Hatch also scored the Royals’ third goal to record his first pro multi-goal performance. He is the eighth different player to score two goals in a single game for Reading this year. • Ian Watters scored his first power play goal of the year—and recorded his first multi-point performance as a Royal (1g-1a)—in last night’s game. • Defenseman Mike Marcou picked up a pair of assists in last night’s game. Marcou, who leads all Royal defenders with twenty points (3g-17a), is tied for eleventh in ECHL d-man scoring. Over his first five full seasons as the Royals’ coach, Courville, who is currently the longest tenured active coach with the same team in the ECHL, has won more regular season games than any other coach in the league. In the history of the league, only five coaches have coached more regular season games than Larry Courville and compiled a higher win percentage. Only ten coaches in the history of the ECHL have won more playoff games than Courville. Last season, Courville followed up the 2014 Kelly Cup Championship for Reading by tying the team record established in the 2012-13 season with forty-six regular season wins which was good enough to capture the organization’s second consecutive Eastern Conference regular season title. During the championship season, Courville and his players not only established the team record for most wins, but also set team records for fewest losses (19), most points in the standings (99), and highest win percentage (.688). Courville, who has led the Royals to the playoffs in all five of his full seasons as the team’s head coach, holds the team record for regular season games coached (398) (twenty-third all-time in the ECHL), regular games won (224) (nineteenth all-time in the ECHL), post-season games coached (56) (tied eleventh all-time in the ECHL) and playoff victories (32) (tied eleventh all-time in the ECHL). Courville is the sixth coach in the twelve year history of the team. He took the head coaching reigns of the Royals mid-way in the 2008-09 season, on January 6, 2009, when the team had a record of 9-23-2. In the final 38 games of that regular season, the Courvilleled Royals went 15-19-4. Since that time Courville’s teams have collectively gone eightyeight games over .500 (209-121-3), which translates into a .622 win percentage. During that time span, the Royals have won two regular season conference titles (2012-13 and 2013-14) and three regular season division titles (2010-11, 2012-13, and 2013-14). This stint with the Royals is the first pro head coaching assignment for Courville, who served as the general manager, facility director, and hockey operations supervisor of a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, ice rink for over two years after completing his final full season as a player in 2006. With respect to his playing career, Courville, a third round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 1995, played in more than 600 pro hockey games, including 33 in the National Hockey 1 League with the Canucks. During his playing career, Courville, who served as team captain during no fewer than six of his nine full-time playing seasons, racked up over three hundred points and a thousand penalty minutes. He was named as the team’s Most Valuable Player for the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League in 1996-97. Prior to turning pro, Courville, who originally hails from Timmins, Ontario, was twice a member of Team Canada Gold Medal championship teams in international play, including the 1995 World Junior U-20 Championship, during which he played an integral role on his home country’s team that went undefeated during the world’s premiere amateur tournament. Courville played all or parts of five different seasons with the Royals, starting with a short stint during the team’s inaugural year (2001-02) and culminating with ten games played on an ‘as-needed’ basis during the 2007-08 season. In addition to earning the respect of his teammates and the admiration of the fans in Reading for his gritty and relentless style of play, Courville also received the Royals’ Unsung Hero Award at the conclusion of the 200405 season and the team’s Heart Award in 2005-06. On October 22, 2006, Courville became the first person ever inducted into the Reading Eagle Wall of Honor at the Sovereign Center, which honors members of the Royals’ organization who have made signficant contributions to the success of the team. Perhaps not surprisingly, on the day that he was inducted into the Wall of Honor, Courville dressed for an undermanned Royals’ team and played an instrumental part in the 5-3 victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots. His efforts that day included scoring a late-game goal to ice the team’s win. On October 30, 2011, while in his role as the team’s head coach, Courville became the first former player in team history to have his number (#22) retired by the team. Larry and his wife, Shannon, and their two young daughters (MaKenna and Morgan) and young son (Mason), currently reside in Palmyra, Pennsylvania.
