Introduction
About This Document
This document is a guide to assist you in the preparation of your site for the installation of your
LXE 2.4GHz Wireless Data Communications System. If you have technical questions or need
technical assistance with your site preparation, call LXE Technical Support at 770-449-0154.
Preparing Your Site
The preparations described here can be completed by your company or by LXE. If you want LXE
to complete all or part of the site preparation, contact your LXE Customer Relationship Manager
(CRM) for a price quote. See section titled “Site Preparation Checklists” for an overview.
It is critical that these actions be completed prior to the arrival of LXE installation team.
Failure to properly prepare your site may cause delays and could increase the cost of your
LXE installation. If you determine that the installation cannot take place as scheduled,
please notify your Customer Relationship Manager (CRM) at 770-447-4224 at least 12
working days prior to the scheduled arrival of the LXE installation team to avoid additional
charges.
As you install your LXE equipment, keep in mind three criteria:
•
•
•
safety,
ease of use, and
maintenance accessibility.
Never sacrifice safety to benefit either ease of use or maintenance accessibility. Always follow
standard mechanical and electrical procedures when performing your work.
Portions of local building and electrical codes may apply to the installation of your LXE Wireless
Data communications system. It is your company’s responsibility to comply with the applicable
sections of your local codes.
LXE does not recommend scheduling the installation until it is possible to test
communications between the host computer and the LXE 2.4GHz devices. If the host
computer and software are not ready, LXE will install and test the 2.4GHz system with the
exception of the host interface, and the installation shall be considered complete. LXE will
not assume any further on-site responsibility for this interface. Normal hardware and
telephone support warranties will apply.

Note:
The preparations described here can be completed by your company or by LXE. If you
want LXE to complete all or part of the site preparation, contact your CRM for a price
quote.
Site Preparation
Access Point (AP) Locations. Using the Facility Analysis report supplied by LXE, locate the
AP positions.
AP Mounting Boards. Install the AP mounting boards (see “Mounting APs”).
AC Power. Needed only for certain AP locations. See your Facility Analysis for details.
Antenna Locations. Using the Facility Analysis report, locate the antenna positions.
Mounting Antennas. Mount the antennas in the locations described in the Facility Analysis
report (see “Mounting Antennas”).
Antenna Cables. Pull the Heliax cables for the antennas in the most direct route (see the
Facility Analysis report) from each AP mounting board to its associated antenna. The Heliax
cable requires special handling (see “Installing Antenna Cable”). LXE will install and test
connectors on the Heliax cable. If the antenna cables are pre-terminated (15 ft. or less), LXE
will install them.
LAN Installation. Pull the LAN (data) cable to each AP mounting board. The LAN must
comply with IEEE Standard 802.3 for Ethernet. The cable used for the LAN must meet the
appropriate standards. The standard for Cat. 5 UTP LAN Cable is TIA/EIA 568A/B.
Mounting APs. Refer to the section titled “Mounting APs” for instructions.
Vehicle Mounted Devices. If you have vehicle-mounted devices, attach the mounting brackets
and connect the power cables to your forklifts and pallet jacks before LXE arrives (see “Vehicle

Other Preparations
Phone Lines. If 56KB lines are being used to link parts of your LXE System, order the
installation and certification of the necessary data lines.
Charging Batteries. If you have handheld devices, place the batteries in their chargers and
fully charge all batteries before LXE arrives. See “Related Reference and Analysis Guides.”
Host Communications. Prepare the host computer so that it is ready to establish
communications with the LXE Access Points and mobile devices.
Personnel To Be Trained. At the time of installation, LXE will provide training for your daily
users, supervisors, and those responsible for the LXE System. All those selected for training
need to attend the first section of the training. Supervisors and IS personnel will stay longer for
advanced training. Determine the people you would like to have trained. LXE will provide a
study guide for each trainee.
Training Area. Arrange for a place to conduct training. A quiet area with seating for everyone
works best. If possible, locate the training within the RF coverage area so that the system can be
demonstrated.
Work Area. Designate an area in your facility with a work table and AC power that can be
used by LXE personnel for staging and testing your mobile devices and other equipment. A
storage space where equipment can be secured is also desirable.
12-Volt Battery. LXE personnel will need one (1) fully charged 12-volt vehicle battery to be
used during the coverage check on a 2.4GHz system configuration and testing. It will be
returned upon completion of the installation.
Escorts and/or Security Badge. Please arrange for an escort and/or Security Badge, if
required, for LXE personnel on site.
Lift Vehicle. LXE personnel will need a safeman lift vehicle in order to reach antennas, APs,
and other equipment more than five (5) feet above floor level. If your company policy will not
allow LXE to operate the lift vehicle, please provide a qualified operator.
Utility Cart. LXE personnel will need a four-wheeled cart to move equipment around the
facility. If your site is large, a motorized cart can greatly speed up your installation.
IP Addresses. Request IP addresses from your IT Department for the following network
components for the LXE System.
•
•
•
•
All LXE APs (including spares).
Subnet Mask (if required for your network).

Figure 1 Typical System
The above figure shows a typical LXE system with two APs. The local area network shown is
Ethernet employing UTP.
Network Requirements
•
All Access Points must be installed on the same network segment. There must be no router
separating Access Points. Wireless Client devices will not roam from AP to AP across
routers.
•
The wireless network must be isolated from the rest of the Facility’s network by a router. An
Access Point performs like a bridge passing all traffic. Traffic that is unrelated to the RF
network will compete for processor time in the Access Point thereby reducing RF throughput
and reduce battery life in mobile devices.

Local Area Network Requirements
Network Design
A Local Area Network (LAN) is required to connect the AP(s) to the Host Computer. A Wide
Area Network (WAN) is required if the Host Computer is located at a distant location. All
networks must meet the IEEE standards. The following is a guide for anyone installing a LAN to
be used with a LXE Wireless Data System. Each type of LAN will be presented separately. A
LAN can be exclusively one or a combination of the types listed below:
•
Ethernet, Unshielded Twisted Pair (10baseT)
•
Ethernet, Fiber Optic (10baseFL)
Network Cable Routing
If LXE designed your LAN, routing directions for your LAN cabling will be found in your LXE
Facility Analysis.
Customer Supplied Networks
Networks installed by parties other than LXE must be fully tested to the LXE device connection
point prior to the installation of the LXE System.

•
Ethernet networks must comply with IEEE Standard 802.3.
•
UTP cable must have a twist rate in a range from 2 - 10 twists per foot. For the most reliable
operation use Cat. 5 cable.
•
Characteristic impedance of the cable must be between 85 and 111 ohms.
•
UTP cable must be 22, 24 or 26 gauge wire.
•
The cable should be routed in a star topology (point-to-point) with a separate cable connecting
each LXE device to a 10BaseT switch with inline power. No taps, branches or daisy chains
are allowed.
•
The maximum length of a UTP run is 328 feet (100 meters). Repeaters can be used to connect
up to three (3) segments before inter-repeater links are required. Cat. 5 cable is normally
marked with footage. Subtracting the footage numbers on each end of the cable will give you
the total length of the cable.
•
Make absolutely certain that the cable is routed to the correct location for each LXE device
plus ten (10) extra feet margin for error.

•
Hubs or repeaters must be capable of driving a usable signal at least 328 feet (100 meters)
with 11.5 db of measurable attenuation in each 100M UTP cable segment.
•
UTP uses RJ45 type connectors. It is recommended that twisted pair cable with factory
applied RJ45 connectors be used. The Cat. 5 UTP cable can be purchased in different lengths
with the RJ45 connectors attached from most cable suppliers.

•
The LXE device connects directly to the network via a RJ45 connector on the back of the
unit.
•
The UTP cable must be wired so that the transmitter (Tx+) on one port communicates with
the receiver (Rx+) on the other port.
•
The LXE device has a standard RJ45 port, pins 1 and 2 are the transmit lines and pins 3 and 6
are the receive lines. Most concentrator (HUB) ports are wired as crossover ports (check the
hardware literature), pins 3 and 6 are the transmit lines and pins 1 and 2 are the receive lines.
•
When the hub (or repeater) has a crossover port, a standard cable (pin 1 to pin 1) can be used.
If both ends of the link have standard ports, the cable must be wired as a crossover cable with
pin 1 switched with pin 3 and pin 2 switched with pin 6 on one end of the cable only.

Ethernet networks must comply with IEEE Standard 802.3.
•
The cable should be routed in a star topology (point-to-point) with a separate cable connecting
each LXE device to a fiber optic multi-port hub or repeater. No taps, branches or daisy chains
are allowed.
•
The maximum length of a fiber optic run is 3,280 feet (1000) meters. Repeaters can be used to
connect up to three (3) segments before inter-repeater links are required.
•
Two fibers strands are required for operation, transmit and receive. LXE recommends using a
fiber cable with four strands.
•
Make absolutely certain that the cable is routed to the correct location for each LXE device
plus ten (10) extra feet margin for error.
•
A fiber optic media converter is required to connect the cable to each LXE device.

Mounting APs
11
Mounting APs
LXE Access Points should be mounted on plywood mounting boards. The customer is responsible
for obtaining and installing the mounting board, AC power (if required), data cable, and antenna
cable for each AP. LXE will mount the AP(s) on the boards, or within the Type 4 NEMA
enclosure (if used), after the AP(s) have been programmed and tested.
Type 4 NEMA enclosures must be mounted by the customer.
Mounting Board
The AP should be mounted on ¾ inch plywood mounting boards measuring up to 30" x 40" or of
sufficient size to mount any additional equipment i.e. duplex outlet, RJ45 disconnect, UPS. The
board should be attached to a ceiling truss or support column using beam clamps, "U" bolts, or
other secure methods (see figure titled “AP Mounting Locations” in the Facility Analysis). If the
AP is to be wall mounted, it is suggested that a mounting board be attached to the wall to provide
good support for the AP and its associated hardware. If you are uncertain as to the quality of your
facility’s electric power (i.e. surges, spikes, lightning strikes, brown outs, noise, etc.), LXE
recommends that you install an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with each switch with inline
power. Select an UPS with approximately 250VA - 500VA capacities.

AC Power
DC Power to the AP is supplied through the CAT 5 Ethernet Data cable. If the location of an AP
is more than 300 meters from the switch with inline DC power (or power injector), and you have
to make a fiber optic link, you will need a 120 VAC receptacle on the mounting board. The AC
load is less than 1 amp at 115 volts. The circuit should be on a dedicated/isolated electrical circuit
having it’s own breaker. The breaker should be marked “LXE, DO NOT TURN OFF”. The use of
an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) is recommended.
Data Cable (LAN)
Pull the data cable to the mounting board and secure it with cable ties leaving five feet of spare
cable. All data cables must have connectors attached and be tested all the way from point of origin
to the AP connection. It is possible to terminate the data cable in a junction box mounted next to
the AP (see figure titled “AP on Mounting Board”). A short jumper cable is then needed between
the junction box and the AP.

The Type 4 (NEMA) AP Enclosure
The above figure shows the preferred layout for mounting the AP enclosure and its’ associated
hardware on the mounting board. The Type 4 weatherproof enclosure protects the AP from harsh
environments. The customer should attach this AP enclosure to the mounting board using four ¼
inch machine bolts through the mounting flanges at the top and bottom of the enclosure. If you are
mounting the enclosure to a concrete surface, use anchors of sufficient size to accommodate a ¼
inch machine bolt or lag screw.
Note:
Any modifications to the AP enclosure will void all warranties. This includes drilling or
punching new holes in the AP enclosure.

Figure 15 Bend Radius for Heliax Cable
Heliax Cable
Heliax cable must be handled with special care. This cable should be handled much like soft
copper tubing. The cable is shipped coiled and should be uncoiled slowly and carefully. Never
allow the cable to bend sharply. Sharp bends will change the transmission characteristics of the
cable resulting in reduced power being delivered to the antenna. The cable can appear to be
undamaged after a kink has been removed, however, the cable’s performance will still be altered.
All damaged cable must be replaced. The bend radius for Heliax cable should not be less than
one foot.
Heliax Cable Support
Cable Support

Cable Support
(attached correctly)
Figure 16 Example of Improper Support for Heliax Cable
Cable ties or other means must support the Heliax cable. The external circumference of the cable
must not be distorted by the support device as illustrated in the above figure.
Cable Ties
Attach cable ties to the building structure such as steel supporting members and ceiling trusses. In
the strictest sense, any part of the building that is permanent (not removable) can be used for cable
support. The cable should not be supported by tying to conduit or other pipes unless there is
absolutely no other support available. Never use hot water, steam, or sprinkler system pipes for
support.
E-INS-24GHZSYS-A
Preparing For Your LXE 2.4GHz System Installation
22
Installing Antenna Cable
Suspended Ceilings
Cable run above suspended ceilings should be supported so that it does not rest directly on the
suspended ceiling tiles.
Routing Heliax Cable
The Heliax cable is subject to electrical interference. Never route Heliax cable within 5 feet of
high current electrical lines or power cabinets. Heliax cable running in parallel with normal
electrical wiring should be at least 12 inches from the electrical wiring. Route the cable so that it is
either out of sight or out of reach of curious personnel.
Heliax Cable Ends
The Heliax cable must be pulled all the way to the exact location, plus 2 feet, as described in the
Facility Analysis report. The RF coverage will be affected if cable destinations are not correct.
There should be no other excess cable in the cable run.
Cable Length
To prevent unnecessary loss of RF power, the Heliax cable should be run in the most direct route
possible with the minimum amount of cable used. If the cable lengths specified by LXE are
exceeded, RF coverage may be affected and/or there might not be enough cable to complete
the total installation. If cable installers must deviate from LXE routing instructions, please
consult with the LXE Technical Specialist for Facility Analysis at 770 447-4224, ext. 6649.
Fire Walls
Fire walls can’t be treated the same as other walls when running cable through the wall. The hole
must be sealed with “firestop” after drilling whether the cable is installed at this time or later. Do
not leave open holes in the fire wall. All contractors are responsible for sealing the holes they use
even those that were drilled by others. The rule is “The last one through the hole seals the hole.”
Any unsealed holes that are discovered should be reported to the facility’s management
Building Codes
Your local building or electrical code may require that the cable be enclosed in metal conduit. If
the cable must be re-pulled in conduit after the LXE Field Engineer has terminated it, one of the
terminating connectors must be removed then reinstalled after the cable is pulled through the
conduit. When the connector is reinstalled, check it for correctness using an Ohmmeter
BEFORE CONNECTING IT TO THE LXE EQUIPMENT.
Heliax Cable Support
If the cable will not be enclosed in conduit, it should be supported at least every three feet by cable
straps, clamps or similar means. Always ensure that the external circumference of the cable is not
distorted in any way by the clamping device (see figure titled “Example of Improper Support for
Heliax Cable”).

23
Bending Heliax Cable
Sharp turns are not permitted when using Heliax cable. The minimum bend-radius for 1/2 inch
Heliax cable is 12 inches. Support all cables at least every three feet by clamps, cable straps or
similar means. Always extend the cable 1 to 2 feet past the connecting point when putting the
cable in place.

Appendix A Verification of Readiness
Appendix A Verification of Readiness
Introduction
Before the Verification of Readiness can be performed, the following documents must be
completed:
•
Facility Analysis Report (generated by LXE)
•
Pre-Installation Guide (provided by LXE)
The Verification of Readiness, among other tasks, certifies the facility as qualifying for the LXE
Coverage and Interference Warranty:
“LXE warrants, for a period of one year from the date LXE performs a Facility
Analysis that, from any location within the wireless coverage area, your properly
functioning wireless computers will be capable of bi-directional communications with an
RFU or AP. This warranty is valid provided your LXE system is configured as specified in
the Facility Analysis Report, and System Certification and Testing has been done by an
LXE Field Engineer, and no changes have been made to your facility since the Facility
Analysis. If your LXE system is covered by ServicePass or you have a PMI on an annual
basis, this warranty will be extended as long as you continue these services.”
The following is a general representation of the communication sent to the customer by LXE as
soon as a site system installation has been scheduled.
It is very important that when the Verification of Readiness document is received by the customer,
it is completed and returned to LXE twelve (12) days prior to site configuration and testing date.
The document can be filled out electronically (online) and then emailed or printed and faxed.
The CRM can be contacted at 770-447-4224 if there are any problems or questions about the
Verification of Readiness document.
Verification of Readiness
LXE End User Responsibilities
Important
At the time of the system configuration and testing by an LXE-certified Field Engineer, the facility
must be at least 65% stocked to receive full warranty.
The LXE Field Engineer will check RF coverage and will either certify the facility as qualifying
for the LXE Coverage and Interference Warranty or will make further recommendations to the
Customer so that the facility qualifies for the full warranty.
Should the LXE Field Engineer determine that additional backbone equipment is required to
obtain full RF coverage, the Customer is responsible for purchasing this additional equipment and
installing any additional electrical lines, network connections or other cabling that are needed.
If a return trip is required to complete the system configuration and testing for the additional
backbone, the Customer will be responsible for paying for the return trip.

Vehicle Mounted Cradle and Antenna Installation
General Instructions
The instructions below are valid for all computers. Carefully select the mounting location of the
computer with the following in mind:
•
Do not mount the computer in the vehicle where it may obscure the field of vision required
for safe operation of the vehicle.
•
Do not mount the computer in the vehicle where it may interfere with the driver's access to
any of the vehicle's operating controls.
•
Do not mount the computer in the vehicle where it might subject the driver to injury during an
emergency stop.
•
Do mount the computer in the vehicle for ease of use and good visibility of the computer
display.
•
The antenna must not be mounted within 6 inches of any metal portion of the vehicle.
Attaching the Cradle Mounting
Bracket
The cradle’s mounting brackets must be mounted securely to the framework of the vehicle (not to
any customer-fabricated extensions of the framework). If the computer brackets are not mounted
to the vehicle itself, excessive vibration may occur. LXE is not responsible for damage to the
computer resulting from excessive vibration due to improper mounting. See “Appendix B Mobile
Device Vehicle Mounting”.
Drilling Holes
Check behind/below the metal panel before drilling holes. The drilling operation can cause
damage to electrical wiring, fuel/oil/hydraulic lines or other vehicle components that may be
hidden behind the drilling site.
Securing the Mounting Bracket
When the holes are properly drilled, the cradle’s bracket may be bolted to the vehicle. Place a
lock-washer under each nut. The computer will be secured in the cradle after the LXE Field
Engineer tests the computers and installs the customer defined parameters in the computer.

Vehicle Remote Antenna Mounting
1.
Attach and secure the mounting plate to the highest point on the safety cage, following these
precautions:
•
The plate must be mounted so the antenna is not damaged while the vehicle or any of
its parts are moving.
•
The mounting plate must be parallel to the floor.
•
If the computer requires two antennas, they must be mounted at least 12 inches
(304.8mm) apart.
2.
Attach the female connector of the coaxial cable to the antenna connector on the vehicle
mounted computer.
3.
Insert the male connector on the coaxial cable though the hole in the mounting plate.
4.
Secure the connector to the mounting plate with the washer and hex nut.
5.
Use cable ties to secure the coaxial cable to the vehicle as necessary. Make sure the cable is
routed so it is not damaged by any moving parts of the vehicle.
6.
Attach the antenna to the male connector on the end of the coaxial cable. The antenna must
be mounted in a vertical position.
7.
If the computer is using dual antennas (diversity option), repeat steps for second antenna.

Appendix B Mobile Device Vehicle Mounting
Vehicle Mount Power Cable Wiring
Attach the computer’s mounting bracket to the vehicle before routing the computer’s electrical
cable. This enables you to better judge the length of cable required.
Power source
LXE computers require a continuous source of relatively noise-free DC power. If this requirement
is not satisfied, data in the computer may be lost. To maintain North American Safety Approval
the power cord must be connected to a fused circuit on the vehicle. The fused circuit must use a 5
Amp (maximum) slow blow fuse. If the connection is made directly to the battery, the 5 Amp fuse
should be placed within 5 inches of the battery positive (+) computer.
Warning:
Once you connect the power cable to the vehicle
battery, the possibility of shock exists from the
exposed plug until connected to the computer.
General Guide
It is beyond the scope of this document to recommend specific connection points for all possible
types of vehicles; however, the following general rules are provided for your guidance.
See “Appendix C Mobile Device Vehicle Power Installation”.
Power Connection Point
While observing the fuse requirements specified above, connect the power cable as close as
possible to the actual battery terminals of the vehicle.
IMPORTANT:
Power connection should never be made at any point after the
ignition switch of the vehicle.
Routing the Power Cable
Route the cable the shortest way possible. The input cable from the connection to the battery is
rated for a maximum temperature of 60°C / 140°F. When routing this cable it should be protected
from physical damage and from surfaces that might exceed this temperature.
Additional Cautions
Do not expose the cable to chemicals or oil that may cause the wiring insulation to deteriorate. If
the vehicle is equipped with a panel containing Silicon Controller Rectifiers (SCR's) for vehicle
operation, do not route the power cable in close proximity to the panel.

Introduction
Information in this appendix is drawn from the latest versions of the specific equipment’s
reference guides.
It is very important that the vehicle power installation instructions be followed for the specific
device that is to be wired. Each mobile device is unique as far as power requirements, wiring,
grounding requirements, internal circuitry and fuse placements.
Caution:
For proper and safe installation, the input power cable must be connected to a fused circuit
on the vehicle. This fused circuit requires a 5 Amp maximum time delay (slow blow) high
interrupting rating fuse. If the supply connection is made directly to the battery, the fuse
should be installed in the positive lead within 5 inches of the battery positive (+) terminal.
For installation by trained service personnel only.
Warning:
Risk of ignition or explosion. Explosive gas mixture may be vented from battery. Work only in
well ventilated area. Avoid creating arcs and sparks at battery terminals.
Warning:
Do not install metal safety straps to keep the computer from falling if the isolators fail. Only
non-conducting straps must be used.

Connect Vehicle 12-80VDC Connection
1.
The VX5 must be turned off and the power cable must be UNPLUGGED from the
VX5.
2.
While observing the fuse requirements specified above, connect the power cable as
close as possible to the actual battery terminals of the vehicle. When available, always
connect to unswitched terminals in vehicle fuse panel, after providing proper fusing.
ATTENTION:
3.
For uninterrupted power, electrical supply connections should not
be made at any point after the ignition switch of the vehicle.
Route the power cable the shortest way possible. The cable is rated for a maximum
temperature of 105°C (221°F). When routing this cable it should be protected from
physical damage and from surfaces that might exceed this temperature.
Do not expose the cable to chemicals or oil that may cause the wiring insulation to
deteriorate.
Note: If the vehicle is equipped with a panel containing Silicon Controller Rectifiers
(SCR’s), avoid routing the power cable in close proximity to these devices.
Always route the cable so that it does not interfere with safe operation and maintenance
of the vehicle.
Use proper electrical and mechanical fastening means for terminating the cable.
Properly sized “crimp” type electrical terminals are an accepted method of termination.
Please select electrical connectors sized for use with 18AWG (1mm2) conductors.
