OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER Vol. III Sep/Oct/Nov/Dec 2008 FOOD SERVING HAWAII’S WORKING PEOPLE SINCE 1951 ENTERTAINMENT GAMES See page 3 for more information INSIDE: BOD Message p2***Programs/Events p2 - 7***Information p8 THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MESSAGE MESSAGE Aloha, …and welcome to the final few months of 2008! As in prior years, the period of October through December is the busiest time for Unity House in its beneficiary programs. As you will see in the following pages of this newsletter, there’s plenty of activities in the weeks ahead to keep everyone busy and entertained. But before moving into those, let’s take a quick review of this past summer. First of all, it was a banner year for our educational programs. In Early Education, more than 230 families signed on to obtain financial assistance for their pre-school children. This reflected the second enrollment increase over the past two years and shows the continuing popularity of this program. But that success is matched by our High Education Scholarship Program, which awarded more than $140,000 to 140 students attending colleges and schools in both Hawaii and on the mainland. The summer also saw our participation in the first-ever Unity Labor Day Picnic at the Waikiki Shell. More than 7,000 union members, retirees and their families attended this event, making it possibly the largest recreational gathering of labor families in Hawaii’s history. Unity House joined with the Hawaii Building & Construction Trades Council, the ILWU, Hawaii Teamsters and the Hawaii State AFL-CIO to conduct the all day affair, which included food, prizes and entertainment by many of Hawaii’s most popular performers. We look forward to working with our many labor friends next year to make the picnic an even greater success. Which brings us to up to the present! As you can see from the newspaper cover, Unity House will no longer conduct its Keiki Zoolites. We have instead scheduled this year’s Keiki Christmas party at Bishop Museum on Saturday, December 13th. While we won’t have the zoo animals nearby, there will still be lots of food, entertainment, and games for all as well as the memorable and fascinating exhibits at the Bishop Museum for all to view. Because this event will be held during the daylight hours, we expect a larger crowd, so be sure to sign up early. Our popular Fall activities are all going forward as scheduled with an expected maximum participation. These include the annual Golf & Bowling Tournament trip to Las Vegas from October 9-14; the Turkey Shoot Golf Tournament, being held this year at Waikele Golf Course on Monday, November 10th and our Retiree’s Thanksgiving Luncheon at the Sheraton Hotel on Sunday, November 16th Although The Las Vegas trip is already sold out, we are now taking applications for the Turkey Shoot, and reservations for the Thanksgiving Luncheon. Also, please note on page six and seven UHI’s new & exclusive discounts that are now being offered to you and your families. Always be sure to bring your Unity House Beneficiary Card when visiting these Preferred Businesses. Finally, don’t forget to register and vote in this year’s elections. Remember! Every vote counts! Our warmest Aloha, UHI Board of Directors PROGRAMS/EVENTS EARLY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Early Education Scholarship Program (EESP), for coverage period October 1, 2008 - March 31, 2009, recently ended on August 15th. Penny Banks, Programs Coordinator, reported that UHI received 232 applications. Eligible recipients included beneficiaries of Unity House, Inc., as well as, UNITE HERE, Local 5, Hawaii Teamster, Local 996, and Friends of Labor. She went on to say that for over the past 2 years, the number of applications have steadily increased by 10%. If you’ve missed this enrollment period, the next is scheduled for January 1st through February 15th 2009. 2 3 KEIKI CHRISTMAS In celebration of the upcoming holiday season, Unity House will be holding its annual Keiki Christmas at the Bishop Museum on Saturday, December 13, 2008. Traditionally, this event was always held on the second Thursday in December at the Honolulu Zoo. However, this year, we have chosen the Bishop Museum for its capacity and a Saturday to accommodate more beneficiaries. This event will be held on the “Great Lawn” and is free to all of our beneficiaries and their families. There will be lots of food, games, entertainment, door prizes and the ever so popular, Santa’s Box, in which every child, 12 and under, will receive a gift. Simultaneously, the Bishop Museum exhibits will be open, but there is a small fee for those who are interested. In order to attend this joyous event, you must pre-register with Unity House by calling us at 945-0050. Pre-registration begins October 15th. Reservation deadline is December 8th. (Please have the # of adults and the # of children ages 4 - 12 & # of children ages 3 & under before calling) Don’t forget to mark your calendar, and come and spend this holiday, fun-filled event with us. On Monday, September 1, more than 7,000 of Hawaii’s workers and their families came together at the Waikiki Shell. While entertainment and fun were the orders for the day, it was also a time to renew Labors commitment of unity, purpose and friendship that spans many generations. Thanks to the Hawaii Building & Construction Trade Council, Iron Workers, Hawaii State AFL-CIO, Hawaii Teamsters, ILWU, Unity House and several other private Labor Unions, thousands of people were treated to free food, drinks, games, rides for the keiki, and entertainment throughout the day. Approximately 140 awards totaling nearly $140,000 were given and the recipients are attending schools all over the United States. We awarded four (4) special awards in the amount of $2,500 to the “best of the best” with some GPA’s exceeding 4.0. Three (3) “Best Essay” and six (6) “Outstanding Community Service” applicants received bonus awards of $100 each. In order to make a positive UHI Cosmic Bowling was held on July 19th at Hickam Air Force Base. Beneficiaries from Local 996, Local 5, Unity House, and Friends of Labor came out for a night filled with strikes, spares, rockin’ music, ono food, tons of laughter and door prizes which included two trips to Las Vegas. There were a few gutter balls, but that didn’t dampen this sold-out event. According to Event Coordinator, Kaui Akana, there were 148 bowlers. She added that since this event is such a big hit, we’re looking forward to holding two tournaments next year. We would like to congratulate 1st Place Team Winners “Hawaiian Fire” of Local 996 and all of our participants. Special thanks to volunteers, David Oda and family, UHI’s wonderful staff, and Kaui Akana for coordinating this exciting event. REMINDER!
