His teams have won six games in four of the last five seasons, one of the best stretches in the programs history. Bustle has coached 51 players that have received All-Sun Belt recognition. In 2005 his team won a share of the Sun Belt championship. The Matchup – The game features two teams in the league that like to run the ball. North Texas boasts the second best rushing attack in the Sun Belt at 167.2 yards per game while Louisiana-Lafayette is rushing for 121.3 yards a game. The Ragin Cajuns do have the second best rushing defense in the league, allowing just 139.7 yards a game on the ground. Lance Dunbar and James Hamilton are both in the top 10 in rushing in the league, Dunbar is second at 84 yards a game and Hamilton is eighth with 51 yards a game. Quarterback Chris Masson is ninth in the Sun Belt in total offense but the Ragin Cajuns rank second to last in total offense. Both teams are very ball-controlled oriented offense’s, the Mean Green is averaging 33:23 in time of possession (14th in the nation) while Louisiana-Lafayette is just under 32 minutes at 31:56. The Ragin Cajuns are one of the least penalized teams in the nation with only 10 flags this season, which is lowest number of penalties in the nation. They are fifth in the nation for fewest penalties per game. Compare and Contrast North Texas and Louisiana-Lafayette have both struggled to score points in the early part of the year with the Mean Green ranking last in the Sun Belt (15.5 ppg) and the Cajuns ranking seventh (17.3 ppg) in scoring offense… Louisiana-Lafayette ranks second in the league in rushing defense (139.7 ypg), but allowed Middle Tennessee to rush for 217 yards and three touchdowns last week… The Cajuns allowed 377 yards of total offense against Georgia in the season opener, but has allowed an average of 440.0 yards against two Sun Belt opponents… These two teams are tied for last place in the Sun Belt in sacks allowed, both giving up 12… Third-down conversions is markedly different with North Texas leading the Sun Belt with a success rate of 46.3 percent and ULL bringing up the rear with 32.1 percent…The Cajuns are the least penalized team in the conference with just 10 penalties for 67 yards in three games… North Texas ranks 45th nationally in pass defense (185.0 ypg) while ULL comes in at 112th in the nation (279.3 ypg). Three at Home This week’s game with Louisiana-Lafayette will be the first of three consecutive home games for North Texas. The last time the Mean Green played three straight at Fouts Field was in 2002. That year, North Texas won three straight home games in early November over Louisiana-Monroe, Idaho and New Mexico State to clinch a Sun Belt Conference title and its second New Orleans Bowl appearance. Injury Bug Biting Hard North Texas has been hit unusually hard by the injury bug in the early part of the season and it has created quite a shakeup in the depth chart. North Texas has lost 10 starters (and one backup) with injuries - nine of which are thought to be season-ending injuries. No other FBS team in the nation has been hit nearly as hard, with Utah State coming in a distant second having now lost seven starters for the year with injuries. Of the 11 long-term injuries suffered by North Texas in the early part of the season, nine are by juniors and seniors. The players that are replacing those nine upperclassmen on the depth chart this week are made up of three juniors, five sophomores and one freshman. The 11 players who have suffered the long-term injuries have combined to earn 17 varsity letters at North Texas and the 11 players who fill their spots on the current two-deep combine for four varsity letters. Two Done in 26 Snaps Both of North Texas’ top two quarterbacks suffered season-ending injuries in a period of just 26 offensive plays. First stringer Nathan Tune went down with a dislocated hip late in the Rice game and his replacement Derek Thompson came in to replace him for one play. Thompson then assumed the starting job against Army, but on his 24th snap of the game, he suffered a broken leg. To the best of our research ability, North Texas has never lost its top two quarterbacks in such a short amount of time. Three Deep The North Texas offense has hit especially hard by injury. There are three positions where the top two guys heading into the first game are now gone with injuries. At quarterback, North Texas lost Nathan Tune and Derek Thompson and at center it lost J.J. Johnson and Nick Leppo. The top two outside receivers at the beginning of the season are also gone in Chris Bynes and Benny Jones. www.MeanGreen 3 Sports.com Updated Bios At MeanGreenSports.com Throughout the season bios of selected offensive and defensive players will be updated and available at www.meangreensports.com. ShooTZ-Uh M ean G reen N otes What a Rush The Mean Green rushed 54 times against Florida Atlantic, which is the most rushing attempts by North Texas in a game since Todd Dodge took over in 2007. The last time a North Texas team had more rushing attempts in a game was 55 against Florida International in 2006 under former head coach Darrell Dickey. North Texas had 30 more rushing attempts than FAU in the game last week, which is the largest margin in rushing attempts since the Mean Green held a +37 advantage (56-19) in that category against Louisiana-Lafayette in 2002. Over 40 Saturday’s win against Florida Atlantic was the seventh time under fourth-year head coach Todd Dodge that North Texas had more than 40 rushing attempts in a game. In those seven games, Dodge and North Texas is 3-4 for a winning percentage of .429. In the 33 games that North Texas didn’t have more than 40 rushing attempts, Dodge and North Texas is 3-30 for a winning percentage of .091. Most would expect the average per rush to go down in those games where the Mean Green has more than 40 carries. In games with more than 40 carries, the Mean Green averages 5.2 yards per attempt and in games where it has 40 carries or less it is only marginally better at 5.3 yards per attempt. The only time that North Texas has rushed for more than 40 times and hasn’t averaged over four yards per carry was against Clemson earlier this year when it had 49 attempts for 193 yards (3.9 avg.). Passing Efficiency North Texas attempted only 15 passes in the win over Florida Atlantic which was by far the fewest pass attempts in the Todd Dodge coaching era. The last time a North Texas team had fewer pass attempts was when Darrell Dickey’s team was 6-for-11 passing in a 28-3 loss at Tulsa in 2006. The previous fewest amount of passing attempts under Dodge was when Nathan Tune attempted 23 against Alabama last season. Against FAU, quarterback Riley Dodge had a pass efficiency rating of 179.1 which is the highest rating by a Mean Green quarterback since Dodge went 24-of-30 with no interceptions and four touchdowns against Western Kentucky last year, finishing with a rating of 244.7. Holding it Down The 17 points allowed by North Texas in the win over Florida Atlantic last week was the fewest points allowed by a North Texas defense in the Todd Dodge coaching era. It was the fewest points allowed since the Mean Green gave up 17 to FAU in a 17-16 loss in 2006. North Texas ranks second in the Sun Belt in scoring defense with an average of 27.0 points allowed per game. Last season North Texas was eighth in the league in scoring defense, allowing an average of 35.6 points per game. Pick Position North Texas has thrown five interceptions this season, which is the second-most in the Sun Belt Conference. What is even more concerning than the number is where those interceptions have taken place on the field. All five interceptions were deep in the opponent part of the field, stopping legitimate scoring opportunities for the Mean Green. The five interceptions for North Texas have happened at the visitor 6-yard line, the visitor 15-yard line, the visitor 20 yard line and two in the opponent end zone. Down and Distance to Gain North Texas has been very good on third down conversions in the early part of the season, leading the Sun Belt with a successful conversion rate of 46.3 percent. A big reason for the success has been established on first and second down, giving North Texas a short distance to gain on third down. The break-off point seems to be five yards. When the Mean Green has third down and five or less to gain it is successful 68 percent of the time (21-of-31). When it has six yards or more to gain on third down, it has a 28 percent success rate (10-of-36). Slow out of Gate The North Texas defense will be trying get some early stops this week after not having early success against its first four opponents. All four Mean Green opponents this season have scored a touchdown on their first offensive possession of the game. Clemson, Rice, Army and FAU all took a 7-0 lead over the Mean Green on their respective first possessions. The North Texas offense has not kept pace either, being forced to punt on the first possession in three of its first four games. www.MeanGreen 4 Sports.com M ean G reen N otes 2010 Sun Belt Standings TeamConferenceOverall Middle Tennessee 1 0 1.000 2 2 Troy 1 0 1.000 2 2 North Texas 1 0 1.000 1 3 Louisiana-Lafayette1 1 .500 1 2 Arkansas State 1 2 .333 1 3 FIU 0 0 .000 0 3 Western Kentucky 0 0 .000 0 4 Florida Atlantic 0 1 .000 1 2 ULM 0 1 .000 1 2 This Week In The Sun Belt ULM at Auburn11:00 a.m. FIU at Pitt2:30 p.m. Louisville at Arkansas State6:00 p.m. FAU at South Florida6:00 p.m. ULL at North Texas*6:30 p.m. *-SBC Conference Game Mean Green’s Record When: Leading at the half......................................... 1-0 Trailing at the half.......................................... 0-3 Tied at the half............................................... 0-0 Leading after three quarters........................... 1-1 Trailing after three quarters............................ 0-2 Tied after three quarters................................. 0-0 Scoring first.................................................... 0-0 Opponent scores first...................................... 1-3 Running more plays than opponent............... 1-2 Opponent runs more plays............................. 0-0 Same number of plays.................................... 0-1 Committing more turnovers........................... 0-3 Committing less turnovers............................. 0-0 Turnovers are even......................................... 1-0 Committing at least two turnovers................. 1-3 Winning time of possession........................... 1-1 Opponent wins time of possession................. 0-2 Running 70 or more off. plays....................... 0-2 Running less than 70 off. plays...................... 1-1 Rushing for 150 yards or more...................... 0-1 Rushing for less than 150 yards..................... 1-2 Passing for 200 yards or more....................... 0-2 Passing for less than 200 yards...................... 1-1 Passing % is over 55%................................... 1-1 Passing % is less than 55%............................ 0-2 Third down conv. is over 40%....................... 1-1 Third down conv. is less than 40%................ 0-2 Gaining more total yards than opp................. 1-2 Gaining less total yards than opp................... 0-1 Playing at home.............................................. 0-1 Playing on the road........................................ 1-2 Playing on natural grass................................. 1-1 Playing on artificial surface........................... 0-2 Settling Down in Second Half The Mean Green defense seems to be settling down in the second half of its first two games after surrendering big first-half plays. Nine of the opponents 12 touchdowns this season and all three plays that have gone for more than 50 yards against the Mean Green have come in the first half. Big Play Watch This week’s opponent has a thing for big running plays. Louisiana-Lafayette is responsible for the two longest rushing plays in the Sun Belt Conference this season - for and against. The longest rush in the league this season is a 74-yard touchdown by Middle Tennessee against the Ragin’ Cajuns last week. The second-longest rushing play was a 69-yard touchdown rush by ULL on its first offensive play of the game against Arkansas State. The longest rush against North Texas this season was a 60-yard touchdown run by Clemson on its second play of the game. Turnover Trouble North Texas has struggled in the turnover battle through the early part of the season. The Mean Green has committed nine turnovers and gained five for a difference of -4 which ranks eighth in the Sun Belt and 100th nationally. North Texas has not won the turnover battle in any of its four games this season and has lost the last 18 games when it lost the turnover battle. The last time North Texas won a game while committing more turnovers than its opponent was against Western Kentucky in 2007. Losing Late Leads North Texas lost a fourth-quarter lead against Rice when the Owls scored a touchdown with 6:22 to play to take a 32-31 lead. This was the sixth time in the last 13 games that the Mean Green had a fourth-quarter lead and lost the game. North Texas lost games to Ohio, Louisiana-Lafayette, Florida Atlantic, Florida International and Army last season after leading at some point in the final quarter. Outgaining Opponents It is becoming a freakish trend. North Texas outgained Rice 420-351 in total offense, making the Owls the ninth opponent in the last 16 games to have fewer yards than the Mean Green despite North Texas having a 3-13 record in those games. In five of its 10 losses last year, North Texas had a total offense advantage and in a little more than three years under head coach Todd Dodge, the Mean Green is just 4-15 when outgaining its opponent. Red Zone Quandry After going 6-for-7 inside the red zone in the first two games, North Texas has been unable to score from inside the red zone the last two games. The Mean Green has now scored on six of its nine possessions in the red zone, spending only two possessions the last two games inside the opponent 20. A turnover on downs against Army and an interception against FAU were the two missteps inside the red zone in the last two games. Line Adjustment After allowing just 12 sacks in 12 games last season and ranking first in the Sun Belt and 11th in the nation in sacks allowed, the Mean Green offensive line has yet to hit its stride this season. North Texas has already allowed the same number of sacks (12) after just four games and ranks last in the Sun Belt and 102nd nationally. Four of the five starters from last year returned in 2010, but the Mean Green has lost its top two centers with season-ending injuries and guards Matt Tomlinson and Kelvin Drake have missed game action with minor injuries. Time Management The North Texas offense is doing a remarkable job of sustaining drives and keeping the defense off the field this season. The Mean Green leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks 14th in the nation in time of possession with an average of 33:24 per game. North Texas has never averaged more than 31:40 in time of possession for an entire season since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2001. North Texas has nine drives this year that have lasted 10 plays or more (2.3 per game), compared to last year when North Texas had a total of 22 in 12 games (1.8 per game). North Texas amassed an amazing 41:52 of possession time against Clemson, giving the Mean Green an advantage of 23:44. That is the largest time of possession advantage for a Mean Green offense since returning to Div. I-A in 1995 and believed to be the most time of possession for a North Texas team in a game in school history. www.MeanGreen 5 Sports.com M ean G reen N otes Sun Belt Team Stat Leaders TOTAL OFFENSE 1. Rice hit North Texas for a 51-yard touchdown pass on its first play from scrimmage, while Clemson took a 60-yard run to the house on its second play from scrimmage and later added a 70-yard touchdown pass. In all 12 games last season, North Texas only allowed one touchdown from more than 50 yards out – a 61-yard scoring run by Marell Booker of Western Kentucky. Dunbar Up for Doak Junior running back Lance Dunbar has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back. Dunbar is on the list with 48 other top running backs from around the nation. Last season, Dunbar burst onto the scene with 1,378 yards rushing, finishing 15th in the country, despite starting only eight games. Dunbar had 17 rushing touchdowns, which ranked fifth nationally and his 19 total touchdowns ranked seventh in the nation. As a starter, Dunbar averaged 147.5 yards a game and scored 15 touchdowns. He rushed for over 200 yards twice last season and was one of only four backs in the nation to have multiple 200-yard rushing games. Dunbar joins Jamario Thomas as the only two running backs at North Texas to be nominated for the prestigious award. Thomas was nominated in 2006. New Faces on the Staff The sidelines will have a new look to them this season as three new coaches have joined the staff. Mike Canales is the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Conroy Hines takes over the wide receivers, and Jeff Bryant is the new offensive line coach. Canales is widely known as an great offensive mind, learning under Norm Chow at BYU. Canales has been the offensive coordinator at Arizona and most recently South Florida. Televised Games in 2010 The Mean Green will have four of their 12 games televised this season. The season opener at Clemson was on ESPNU while the Sept. 18 game against Army was shown on the CBS College Sports. The Oct. 2 against Louisiana-Lafayette and Oct. 16 at home against FIU North Texas will appear on the Sun Belt Network. All North Texas games on the Sun Belt Network games will broadcast locally in DFW on the Texas Network. The Sun Belt Network will also have four “wild card” games that will be televised in November. Like Father, Like Son On The Field And In The Booth North Texas head coach Todd Dodge is one of only 56 known major college head coaches to have the rare opportunity of coaching his son in college. Riley Dodge is a sophomore who is entering his third season with North Texas. To go along with the Coach Dodge and his son, Mean Green play-by-play voice George Dunham’s son, Blake, is a freshman linebacker for North Texas. Blake Dunham is also a deep snapper for the Mean Green. George and Blake are the only father-son tandem in FBS this season to have a play-by-play voice calling the action and his son playing. Well Represented in the NFL North Texas has had more players drafted to play professional football than any other team in the Sun Belt Conference. Since the first NFL draft in 1936, North Texas has had 77 players drafted, including seven players picked in the first round. Joe Greene is the highest drafted player ever from North Texas when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the fourth overall pick in 1969. Did You Know North Texas has its share of players on the roster that have great genes of their own but some have even better bloodlines. Linebacker Zach Orr is the son of former NFL tight end Terry Orr, who was a member of the Washington Redskins Super Bowl teams in 1987 and 1991. Wide receiver Alex Lott is the son of former Oklahoma All-Big 8 quarterback Thomas Lott. His older brother just finished up his college career at Rice. Sophomore linebacker Jeremy Phillips is the younger brother of Jason Phillips, the 2008 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year for TCU and current Baltimore Raven linebacker. One Overtime Not Enough North Texas has played in just two overtime games since the NCAA introduced the format in 1996. The Mean Green is 1-1 in its two overtime games, defeating Florida International 2522 in seven overtimes in 2006 and losing to Ohio 31-30 in two overtimes this year. The Mean Green is the only FBS team that has never had a game decided in the first overtime period. www.MeanGreenSports.com M ean G reen O ffensive I ndividual N otes North Texas vs. ULL Statistical Leaders RUSHING YARDS North Texas ULL Lance Dunbar........ 336 Kevis Streeter........144 James Hamilton.....204 Julian Shankle.........62 PASSING YARDS North Texas ULL Nathan Tune..........525 Chris Masson........411 Riley Dodge..........209 Blaine Gautier.........84 D. In 12 games as a starter he has eclipsed 100 yards nine times and averaged 126.3 yards per game. This season, he ranks second in the Sun Belt with an average 84.0 yards per game after sharing the workload with James Hamilton during the early part of the season. He rushed for 117 yards at Clemson, which was more yards than any back against the Tigers this year and more than all but two running backs had against the Tigers in 14 games last season. Dunbar is on the 2010 preseason Doak Walker Watch list for 2010. 20 Carries to Success Obviously when Lance Dunbar gets more carries in a game he is more likely to break the 100-yard rushing mark. He has rushed for over 100 yards in all but one time that he has carried the ball 20 or more times (6-for-7) and only eclipsed the century mark four times when having less than 20 carries (4-for-13). Even more amazing is his average yards per carry. When Dunbar has less than 20 carries in a game he is averaging 5.8 yards per attempt. When he has carried the ball 20 or more times, he is averaging 6.1 yards per attempt. No. of Games Avg./Attempt Avg./Game Less than 20 Carries 13 5.8 61.6 20 or more Carries 7 6.1 155.1 Hamilton Adding On North Texas hasn’t seen much of a drop-off when Dunbar is replaced with junior running back James Hamilton. Hamilton saw very limited action in his first two seasons with the Mean Green, coming into this year with just 19 career carries for 96 yards. Hamilton had a career-high and led all rushers with 11 attempts for 122 yards and a touchdown in the win last week over Florida Atlantic. Hamilton leads the Sun Belt Conference with an average of 8.9 yards per carry this season. Quarterback Quandry After starting quarterback Nathan Tune and his backup Derek Thompson suffered seasonending injuries in back-to-back games, North Texas is forced to go its third-string signal caller, who was its first-string quarterback last season. Confusing? Riley Dodge started 10 games at quarterback in 2009 but switched to wide receiver this year after suffering multiple shoulder and elbow injuries at QB. He is now forced back into the familiar position that he was originally recruited to play. Dodge set a North Texas record as a redshirt freshman in 2009 by completing 67.7percent of his passes, but was saddled by 15 interceptions. Dodge’s backup on the depth chart is now sophomore walk-on Chase Baine who has never taken a snap in a college game. Winging It Dodge was a model of efficiency in the win at FAU completing 10-of-15 passes with two touchdowns. In the eight games that Dodge has started, and finished, he has been most efficient when his passing attempts stay at 30 or less. Here is a look at Dodge in the eight games that he has gone the distance. Comp. % TDs Int. Eff. Rating 30 or Less Attempts (2 games) 76 6 1 191.3 More than 30 Attempts (6 games) 68 3 14 111.3 Top Six to Choose From To help Dodge’s cause, he will have the luxury of having all of his top six leading receivers back from last season. The six receivers accounted for just less than 90 percent of the Mean Green’s receiving yards last season and all 15 of the receiving touchdowns. Jamaal Jackson led the way with 71 catches and 701 yards last season and leads the team again this year. Sophomore Darius Carey was second on the team last year and is again this year, but has a team-high three touchdown catches. A Line of Veterans Even with the injury to center J.J. Johnson, the North Texas offensive line is made up of a very experienced group. The remaining four starters are made up of a four-year starter, two three-year starters and one two-year starter. The three seniors of Kelvin Drake, Victor Gill and Esteban Santiago have combined to start 89 games dating back to the 2006 season. Drake and Santiago have earned all-conference recognition during their time at North Texas and Santiago is on the preseason all-conference team. www.MeanGreen 7 Sports.com M ean G reen D efensive /S pecial T eams I ndividual N otes North Texas vs. ULL Stat Breakdown SCORING Points Per Game NT 62 15.5 ULL 52 17.3 FIRST DOWNS Rushing Passing Penalty 75 39 31 5 42 18 23 1 669 769 100 163 4.1 167.2 2 364 484 120 119 3.1 121.3 3 RUSHING YARDAGE Yards gained rushing Yards lost rushing Rushing Attempts Average Per Rush Average Per Game TDs Rushing PASSING YARDAGE Att-Comp-Int Average Per Pass Average Per Catch Average Per Game TDs Passing TOTAL OFFENSE Total Plays Average Per Play Average Per Game 817 542 119-68-5 89-44-3 6.9 12.0 204.2 6 6.1 12.3 180.7 4 1,486 282 5.3 371.5 906 208 4.4 302.0 KICK RET: #-YARDS 19-432 15-256 KICK RET AVERAGE 22.7 17.1 PUNT RET: #-YARDS 7-24 2-21 PUNT RET AVERAGE 3.4 10.5 INT RET: #-YARDS 3-14 3-38 INT RET AVERAGE 4.7 12.7 FUMBLES-LOST 11-4 3-2 PENALTIES-YARDS 25-202 10-67 Average Per Game 50.5 22.3 PUNTS-YARDS 24-975 24-992 Average Per Punt 40.6 41.3 Net punt average 31.4 38.1 TIME OF POSS./GAME 33:23 31:56 3RD-DOWN CONV. 31-67 17-53 3rd-Down Pct 46% 32% 4TH-DOWN CONV. 2-6 1-3 4th-Down Pct 33% 33% SACKS BY-YARDS 3-28 2-18 MISC YARDS 4 -15 TOUCHDOWNS SCORED 8 7 FIELD GOALS-ATT. 2-3 1-5 PAT-ATTEMPTS 8-8 7-7 Robertson Climbing Tackles List Preseason all-conference linebacker Craig Robertson now has 283 tackles for his career and is climbing his way into the record book. He is 42 tackles away from entering the top five all-time at North Texas in career tackles. Robertson ranks third in the Sun Belt and tied for 49th nationally with 35 tackles. He is on pace for 108 tackles this season which would be the more tackles in a career by any North Texas player since 1990. Robertson would need a huge season to catch the all-time leading tackler Burks Washington who sits with 390 career tackles, 115 ahead of Robertson. Picking his Poison Robertson is also nearing the career interceptions leaders at North Texas after recording his ninth career pick in the season-opener against Clemson. Robertson is just two interceptions shy of the No. 5 spot on the career leaders list at North Texas, which is held by three players, including most recently Jonas Buckles (2001-04). If Robertson gets into the top five, he would be the only linebacker on the list, which is led by Bill Brashier who had 19 interceptions from 1949-51. Getting Pressure Cranked Up If you wanted to trace the struggles of the Mean Green over the last five years, you can find one area that stands out. Pressure on the quarterback. In the last five seasons, North Texas has combined for only 72 sacks. In the previous four seasons from 2001-04, when the Mean Green won four consecutive Sun Belt titles the defense piled up 114 sacks. North Texas has not had more than 17 sacks in a single season since 2005. Obi and Brandon Akpunku both spent the off-season bulking up. Both players are up to 240 pounds. Obi came in at 214 as a freshman last season and Akpunku was a 200-pound linebacker when he stepped foot on campus two years ago. Those two weren’t the only defensive players who added weight this offseason. Sophomore Jeremy Phillips, who started his career as a safety two years ago, was 196 pounds. Now he has moved to linebacker and tips the scales at 212 pounds. Perhaps the two biggest additions are defensive tackles Tevinn Cantly and Richard Abbe. Cantly checks in at 336 while Abbe is 357 pounds. Deans Doing Work Sophomore kicker Trent Deans will not kick a lot of long field goals for North Texas this year, but has proved to be very accurate from close range. Deans was perfect in two field goal attempts and five PAT attempts heading into the FAU game, where he missed a 42-yard try in the third quarter. He is 2-of-2 in field goals from less than 30 yards and perfect in all eight of his PAT attempts this season. Punt Returns Lacking The last two years, North Texas has struggled finding a consistent punt returner. The Mean Green averaged just 5.9 yards per punt return last season, returning a team total of just 11 punts. After four games this year, the Mean Green has returned just seven punts for a total of 24 yards to rank 107th nationally. North Texas has used four different punt returners in three games, most recently settling on Darius Carey and true freshman Brelan Chancellor. North Texas has not returned a punt for a TD since 2004, which covers a span of 66 games. Return Drought Continues It has been 137 games and counting since North Texas has returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Broderick McGrew was the last Mean Green player to do so when he took a kickoff and returned it 100 yards in a 28-27 loss to Utah State on Nov. 14, 1998. North Texas’ current active streak ranks as the eighth-longest in the nation - led by Air Force, which hasn’t brought a kick back for a score in 302 games. www.MeanGreen 8 Sports.com H ead C oach T odd D odge Dodge Quick Facts Age: 46 Alma Mater: Texas (‘87) Record: 6-34 (Fourth year) Previous Job: Head Coach at Carroll HS Playing Experience: Starting quarterback at Texas (1981-85) High School: Port Arthur Jefferson (TX) High School (‘81) Family: Wife, Elizabeth; Son, Todd “Riley”; Daughter, Molly • Led North Texas to a school record 4,904 yards of total offense in 2009. • Coached All-American WR Casey Fitzgerald to the single season receiving record in 2008. • Running back Lance Dunbar finished in the top 15 in the nation last season in scoring and rushing. • Finished coaching in high school ranks by winning four of last five Texas 5A state titles • Still ranks in top 10 at the Univ. of Texas in multiple passing statistics Dodge Coaching Experience Year School Position 2007-Cur. Despite many indications of a program on the rise, Dodge knows that wins and losses is the only measurement of success that anyone is interested in this season. Despite fielding a team that set a school record with 4,904 yards of total offense in 2009 and leading the Mean Green to its best three-year run in offensive performance, Dodge will have to have his team convert yards into points and points into wins. The signs are all there. North Texas improved its scoring average by nearly seven points per game while decreasing its points allowed by 12 points per game in 2009. The Mean Green lost six games by a total of 24 points (4.0 points per game) and lost five games after holding a fourth-quarter lead. North Texas outgained seven of its 12 opponents in total offense last season, but won only two of those games. Dodge believes he added the final piece of the puzzle during the off season when he complimented his coaching staff with two veteran coaches who carry outstanding credentials. Offensive coordinator Mike Canales and wide receiver coach Conroy Hines bring over 43 years of combined college coaching experience to the Mean Green offense in 2010. Canales is thought of as one of the most innovative offensive coaches in the country, having led successful programs at South Florida, Arizona and North Carolina State. One of the best success stories during the Dodge era will always be of wide receiver Casey Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald came to North Texas as a walk-on and spent his first two seasons in obscurity while seeing little action in a run-based offense. In his first year of Dodge’s offense, Fitzgerald broke every North Texas single-season receiving record and after just two years in his system, he is now the school’s all-time leading receiver with 229 career catches (224 in his final two years under Dodge). Dodge, 46, officially assumed control of the North Texas football program on Dec. 26, 2006 - three days after he had coached his Southlake Carroll High School football team to its fourth state championship in five years. As one of the most widely respected high school football coaches in the nation, Dodge led Southlake Carroll to a 79-1 record over his final five years, with the only loss coming by a single point in the 2003 state championship game. Dodge closed his high school career with an amazing 48-game winning streak. Dodge had already been familiar with the Mean Green, having served as an offensive assistant coach in 1992 and 1993. During his tenure he helped direct the Mean Green offense to a per-game average of 348 yards and 26 points. He oversaw the progression of quarterback Mitch Maher, who holds numerous Mean Green offensive records, including pass completions, passing yards, and total offense. Maher went on to play for the Canadian Football Leagues’ Shreveport Pirates. A former starting quarterback for the University of Texas, Dodge threw for 2,791 yards and 18 touchdowns during his time in Austin. He still ranks ninth in both categories on the Longhorn’s all-time leaders list. His 96-yard touchdown pass against Rice in 1985 is tied for the second-longest play in UT’s history. www.MeanGreen 9 Sports.com 2010 G ame R ecaps North Texas Clemson 10 35 September 4, 2010 Memorial Stadium • Clemson, South Carolina Attendance: 75,000 Rice North Texas 32 31 September 11, 2010 Fouts Field • Denton, Texas Attendance: 23,743 CLEMSON, S.C. - Nathan Tune looked impressive in his Mean Green quarterbacking debut and Lance Dunbar ran wild, but the Clemson Tigers were too much for the North Texas football team in a 35-10 loss at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. DENTON, Texas (9/11/10) - The North Texas football team held a lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but Rice scored a touchdown with six minutes left in the game to take a 32-31 victory against the Mean Green at Fouts Field on Saturday night. The Mean Green (0-1) rolled up a 462-423 edge in total yards on Clemson (1-0), and kept the Tigers off the field with a balanced attack that ate up the game clock. North Texas controlled the clock for 41:52 of the game’s 60 minutes. The announced crowd of 23,743 was the fifth largest in Fouts Field history. North Texas held a 31-26 lead at the start of the fourth quarter after trailing the entire first half. North Texas outscored the Owls,10-9 in the second half. In his first start as the Mean Green’s No. 1 quarterback, Tune kept the chains moving with 19of-29 passing for 240 yards and a touchdown. The senior out-dueled Clemson’s star signal caller, Kyle Parker, who completed 9-of-17 passes for 170 yards and two scores. The Owls used a seven-play drive that went 37 yards and took 2:10 to score the game-winning touchdown. The two-point attempt failed, but Rice held the 32-31 lead. Lance Dunbar recorded his second straight 100-yard rushing game. He went 17 for 105 yards. In his career, he has posted 100-yard games in eight of his nine career starts. He posted two touchdowns in the game, including a four-yard shovel reception that put North Texas on the scoreboard in the first quarter. The Tigers struck first, notching the only score of the first quarter on a 60yard breakaway run from Andre Ellington on the game’s opening possession. Injury woes have taken their toll on the Mean Green this year, and hit home again at West Point. After losing center Nick Leppo in the game’s second series, quarterback Derek Thompson left the game with a leg injury. Starting receiver Christopher Bynes also left the game with injury, making nine starters lost to injury this year. Thompson was filling in for Nathan Tune, who left last week’s game against Rice with a hip injury, and Riley Dodge was once again called into action. Dodge, who had taken snaps in both of NT’s games, filled in for Thompson admirably by completing 8-of-17 passes for 63 yards. But a botched a handoff with Lance Dunbar caused NT’s second turnover of the game, and was recovered by Army at the Mean Green 14 yard line. The Black Knights made NT pay just four plays later with a touchdown off the left tackle. A 20-yard scramble from quarterback Trent Steelman capped off Army’s longest touchdown drive of the season - 11 plays and 79 yards. The methodical drive put the Mean Green down 21-0 with 5:52 left in the third quarter. A 23-yard field goal from Army’s Alex Carlton capped off the scoring at 24-0 with just over 12 minutes to play. North Texas took a 21-10 lead with 7:45 left in the game following a 32-yard touchdown run from Hamilton. The junior running back took the snap out of the Wildcat formation, found open space on the left side and rushed for a career-high 32 yards into the endzone. The fourth-quarter scoring drive cut the Mean Green lead to four points, 21-17 with 6:52 on the clock. North Texas had two opportunities to move the ball but was unable to get first downs. The defense came up with big plays to seal the win. www.MeanGreenSports.com 2010 M ean G reen G ame - by -G ame R esults at Clemson Rice at Army at FAU UL-Lafayette Arkansas State FIU at Western Kentucky Troy at Middle Tennessee at ULM Tm.
