n preparing our souls for
the holidays and the year

two central themes that shape the Days
of Awe: creativity
and commitment.
Rosh Hashanah

WELCOMING NEW CLERGY AND STAFF
FROM STEVEN M. FRIEDMAN, CHAIRMAN
L'Shanah tovah
O
n behalf of all the
Officers and Trustees
of Park Avenue
Synagogue, I wish each of you a
happy and healthy year in 5773.
As you will see from perusing
this issue of the Bulletin and the
enclosed Program Calendar, we have
an extraordinary line-up of lectures, classes, concerts and
opportunities for spiritual engagement for members of all
ages and interests. I hope you will join us as often as you can,
whether listening to a world class speaker or taking an entire
course. I encourage you to refresh your soul at our weekly
musical Kabbalat Shabbat services and to connect with the
community at daily minyan. I hope you will participate in
mitzvah projects that support our local community as well as a
safe, secure, independent, democratic state of Israel. I invite you
to join a committee or become active in one of our arms, and to
make new friends while you help bring about programming that
matters to you. Whether you come to Park Avenue Synagogue
occasionally or daily, I trust you will experience pride and joy
whenever you enter the building, as I do.
I look forward to seeing you at High Holy Day services
and throughout the year as our congregation comes together
for worship, study, social and cultural events and lifecycle
celebrations.
L’shanah tovah, may we all be written and sealed for a good
new year!

‫ בני מצוה‬Bnei Mitzvah
Joshua Weinfeld
September 8
Parashat Ki Tavo
Josh began his education
in the Orange Room of
the PASECC and has
continued his Jewish
studies in the Congregational School.
Now in 8th grade at Wagner Junior High
School, Josh is a diligent student whose
favorite subject is math.
Josh plays snare drum, drum set,
tympani, and marimba and improvises
on Garage Band. He plays percussion in
his school band, and also performed with
the Manhattan Borough Wide Band at
Carnegie Hall last year.
An enthusiastic athlete, Josh plays
basketball, baseball, and soccer for the
Wagner school teams. He also enjoys
playing pick up games in the park. Josh
spends summers at Camp Kennybrook,
which is like a second home to him.
Josh is easy-going and enjoys
spending time with friends and family.
He is a loving and patient older brother to
his sister Rebecca and a wonderful role
model for her.
Josh wishes to thank his family, the
clergy, and especially his tutor Michael
Wolk for helping him to prepare for this
day. He looks forward to culminating
this milestone by traveling to Israel in
December with his family on the PAS
Bnei Mitzvah trip.
Emily Abelow
September 8
Parashat Ki Tavo
Emily is thrilled and
honored to celebrate
her Bat Mitzvah at Park
Avenue Synagogue. She
has attended the Congregational School
since she was in 5th grade, when her
family moved from another Conservative
synagogue to PAS. Her Jewish education
extends well beyond the walls of PAS.
She has attended Ramah camps since
she was six years old, starting at Ramah
Nyack and graduating to overnight camp
in 2008. She has just completed her fifth
wonderful summer at Ramah Berkshires
and looks forward to many more!
Emily is also well-traveled in Israel,
having visited with her family twice
in the last few years. She had the great
thrill of reading Torah on Masada, where
she marked her becoming Bat Mitzvah
alongside her cousin Joshua.
Emily attends the Lab School for
Collaborative Studies and is an athlete
and avid sports fan. She plays soccer,
basketball and softball in school,
recreational and travel leagues. Emily
is a great role model to her two younger
sisters. Every day she demonstrates how
dedication, hard work and perseverance
lead to success.
Emily’s family is extremely proud of
her accomplishments and very grateful
to the clergy and staff at PAS for making
this day possible.
Jack Adam Silver
September 15
Parashat Nitzavim
Jack Adam is an 8th
grader at Riverdale
Country School who
loves everything about
sports, especially baseball, basketball,
football and Ohio State. He also enjoys
traveling with his family, laughing with
his brothers Harrison and Justin, playing
guitar and listening to music. He looks
forward to summers in Maine at Camp
Cedar.
Jack is named for his grandmother
and his mother's cousin, Adam Kreiger,
who died at age 20. Jack has learned
how Adam lived life to the fullest in the
face of the greatest obstacles. For his
mitzvah project, Jack is working with
and supporting the Adam Kreiger Fund to
help young people gain a zest for life and
a determination to overcome anything.
Jack’s education started in the Purple
Room of the PASECC. Since Gan, he
has been a student at the Congregational
School. PAS is a special place for him
and his family as his grandparents, aunts,
uncles and cousins are all active members
of this community. Jack would like to
thank his family and friends and all his
PAS teachers and clergy for helping him
to prepare for his Bar Mitzvah, with a
special thank you to Cantor Kidron.

When Adam isn't in school, he can
be found rooting for the NY Yankees or
practicing and performing magic, which
he learned from his father. He also enjoys
spending time with his sister, Alyssa. For
the past five summers Adam has attended
Camp Equinunk in upstate Pennsylvania.

The symbol of the new Women’s Network is based on
one of the pictographs in the stained glass windows
that line the synagogue lobby and the Appleman Chapel, which were designed by the abstract expressionist
artist Alfred Gottlieb. Gottlieb used the motif of spokes
with knobs on the end to represent lamps and light.
The symbol suggests the sparks of connection and
the warmth of community which the PAS Women’s

experiential Jewish youth education, having served
in part- and full-time roles in the Union for Reform
Judaism's (URJ) youth programs from 2000-2010.
“Caryn will take a holistic approach to engaging youth at
PAS,” explains Rabbi Neil Zuckerman. “Our aim is to create a
continuum of experiential Jewish programming to complement
pre-Bnei Mitzvah learners’ Congregational School or day
school experiences, and to offer relevant social, educational, and

leadership development opportunities for post-Bnei
Mitzvah young adults.”
Caryn originally hails from the Detroit area,
where her multi-branched family has deep personal
and professional roots in the Jewish community.
Growing up in the URJ’s youth group and camp
programs, she developed from a young age a love of
Jewish music, Torah lishma (Torah study for its own
sake), and community-building. She now carries these passions
into her work with teens.
A graduate of New York University's Wagner School of
Public Service, Caryn holds a master’s degree in nonprofit
management, as well as a bachelor's degree in communications
from Boston University.

Young Family High Holiday Services
W
e are excited to begin the new year of
5773 with our families who have children under six
years old. To accommodate everyone, we will have
multiple family services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur,
with some services being held at a location across the street from
the synagogue. Families have been assigned to the different
services, taking into consideration the number of people in each
family and the age of the children. Each family will receive a
“post card ticket” in the mail for the family service to which they
have been assigned.
If you are a new member of PAS and you have never
participated in one of our programs for families with young
children, please contact Matt Check, Director of Young Family
Education, to make certain that you have been assigned to a
family service. In any case, if your family does not receive a
“post card ticket” in the mail within two days of receiving your
regular synagogue High Holiday tickets, or if you have any
questions about High Holidays at PAS for families with young
children, please feel free to contact Matt.
For additional descriptions, fees and registration instructions for all YFE programming, please see the Fall
Program Calendar, pages 20-22, or visit pasyn.org/Young Family Education.
