Orienteering Championships

The 2013 European Youth Orienteering Championships (EYOC), for 16 to 18 year olds,
will take place in the Jezreel Valley and Lower Galilee in northern Israel.
The international event is being organized by the Israel Sport Orienteering Association,
with the support of the Jezreel and Galilee orienteering clubs and the Jezreel Valley
Regional Council.

1. The Jezreel Valley of Israel
Ancient and modern history, the Bible, and geography in the Jezreel Valley are more closely entwined
and visible than anywhere else in Israel.
The Jezreel Valley extends across the breadth of the country, from the Mediterranean Sea to the
Jordan River, between Mount Carmel, Mount Gilboa and the Hills of Lower Galilee.
The passes through these mountains were important trade routes for thousands of years, linking
Europe, Africa and Asia. Ancient caravans carried merchandise and the innovations of far-off
cultures, while armies battled for strategic control of the region. The ruins of Tel Megiddo
(Armageddon), Tel Jezreel , Beit Shean, Beit She’arim, and other sites, bear witness to the
civilizations and events of antiquity.
Jezreel means “God will sow” – a hint at the valley’s fertility, although by modern times neglect had
turned most of the region into swamps. But beginning in the early 1900s, pioneers drained the
swamps, and made the valley bloom again. Today the Jezreel Valley, with its many natural springs, is
the agricultural heartland of Israel.
Among the Jezreel Valley’s many attractions are historical, cultural, and natural treasures:
• Religious and heritage sites in Nazareth, especially the Basilica of the Annunciation, the Church of
St. Gabriel, and Mary’s Well.
• Tel Megiddo (Armageddon) National Park
• The mosaics at Zippori and Beit Alfa National Parks
• The Circassian village and museum in Kfar Kama
• The pioneering and historical museums at Kfar Tabor and Kibbutz Ein Dor
• Hiking portions of the Israel Trail and the Jesus Trail
• The spring-fed warm water pools at Gan Hashlosha (Sachne) National Park

Dear Athletes,
We are pleased and excited to host the 2013 European Youth Orienteering Championships in the
Jezreel Valley Regional Council. This unique event brings you, youth from all over Europe, to compete
in the villages and woods of Mizra, Kfar Hahoresh, Ginegar, Shimshit and Zippori. For most of you,
this competition offers you an opportunity to see and experience, for the first time, the diverse
aspects of Israeli geography and culture.
Jezreel Valley is Israel’s cradle of settlement and agriculture, which you will certainly see while
orienteering in the valley and surrounding hills. You are invited to feel, see, hear and smell the
unique character of this area, which combines a long history from the Bible with modern agriculture
and community life. While orienteering, you are apt to discover some of the hidden gems of the
valley – such as an ancient well or a wine press.
I thank the many volunteers working to make the event a success. I wish all competitors a rewarding
and successful championships that will allow each and every one of you to excel. Come, run,
orienteer, and enjoy. I am certain our valley’s spirit of sportsmanship will accompany you during the
event, and will remain with you even after it ends.

Dear Athletes,
Welcome to the European Youth Orienteering Championship, 2013, taking place for the first time in
Israel.
With the beautiful scenery of the Holy Land as a backdrop, you will enjoy the challenging competition
of orienteering with others your own age, who will gather here from all over Europe.
Here, you can discover that although you do not speak the same language or share the same
customs, all of you share a love of a sport that is an ideal combination of physical activity and natural
beauty, of quick thinking and bodily strength.
Orienteering is one of the most attractive sports for everyone and for a lifetime. I am pleased that we
have the opportunity to host the Championship, and hope that it will encourage more young people
and adults to join the circle of athletes and maintain an active and healthy way of life.
I would like to express my great appreciation to the Israel Sport Orienteering Association for
organizing the Championship, and for its activity all year long to introduce orienteering in schools and
all strata of our society. This work is primarily carried out by volunteers. I thank you all.

6. Competition Rules
The event will follow the Competition Rules for International Orienteering Federation (IOF) Foot
Orienteering Events (January 2011) and the Special Rules for European Youth Orienteering
Championship (2002).
Anti-Doping
All competitors will follow the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) Anti-Doping Rules
(February 2010.)
7. Classes and Participation Restrictions
The European Youth Orienteering Championships are open to:
• Women – 16 (W16) up to 16 years old, born in 1997 and later
• Women – 18 (W18) up to 18 years old, born in 1995 and later
• Men – 16 (M16) up to 16 years old, born in 1997 and later
• Men – 18 (M18) up to 18 years old, born in 1995 and later
All competitors must have a valid passport of the country they are representing.
Sprint event and long distance event: Each nation may enter a maximum of 4 competitors in each
class.
Relay (3 legs): Each nation may be represented by one relay team of 3 in each class.
Each nation is allowed a maximum of 4 officials (team leaders).

8. Event Center
The EYOC 2013 event center and accommodation will be at Pina Ba’emek Country Lodging at
Kibbutz Mizra.
All events are within a short driving distance from the event center.

9. Accommodation and Board
All participants will be accommodated at Pina Ba’emek Country Lodging at Kibbutz Mizra.

Kibbutz Mizra is 5 km south of Nazareth. It is 10-minute drive from Afula, which is the capital of the
Jezreel Valley.
All rooms are air conditioned and have a private entrance. Each room includes 4 beds, private
shower and bathroom, refrigerator, and cable TV. Mini-market, coffee shops, and wifi hotspots are
on site.
Meals will be served in the kibbutz dining room. If necessary during competition, lunch will be served
in the finish areas.
The EYOC 2013 entry fee of 200 Euro covers accommodation and board, per person.
Extra night stays (bed and breakfast) can be arranged at a cost of approximately 30 Euro per person.
Preliminary accommodation reservations are required by 15 December 2012.
Accommodations are also available at Nof Tavor Hotel, also located at Kibbutz Mizra.
Hotels and B&Bs of varying price ranges are also available in nearby Nazareth.

10. Transportation
To and From Airport
Israel’s main airport is Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) near Tel Aviv. The distance between the
airport and the event center at Mizra is 100 km (about 1:15 hour driving time).
The organizers will arrange (on request) transportation for participants to and from the airport and
event center, at a cost of approximately (but not exceeding) 30 Euro per passenger, per each
direction.
To and From Arenas
Organizers will provide transportation between Mizra and the arenas.
Teams may organize their own transport to and from the arenas, but no discount on the entry fee
will be given.
Ben Gurion Airport to Event Center Driving Instructions
Exit the airport onto Highway 1 heading east (towards Jerusalem).
Bear right onto Route 443 and immediately take exit onto Highway 6 North.
After about 60 km, exit to Route 65 (Iron interchange).
Follow Route 65 as it bypasses to the left of Afula, until reaching Route 60.
Turn left onto Route 60. After about 2.5 km, turn left into Mizra.

11. Embargoed Areas
Entry to the embargoes areas is prohibited for potential team members, leaders and others, who
through the knowledge of the terrain could influence results of the EYOC competition. However,
paved public roads passing through the area may be used.

There are many training maps in close proximity to the competition arenas. Israel is a small country,
and nearly all O-maps in Israel are within a driving distance of no more than two hours.

The orienteering season in Israel spans from October through May, and includes a series of
12 National Orienteering League events. During the season, events are held every Saturday, and also
on many Fridays.

15. Punching and Time-keeping System
All EYOC 2013 events will be organized using the EMIT electronic punching system.
Competitors who have EMIT cards are requested to bring and use their own cards.
The organizers will provide EMIT cards on request, at no extra cost.

16. Clothing
There are no regulations applying to runners concerning the type of clothing they choose to wear.
But organizers recommend to use long trousers for Long distance and Relay.
It is forbidden to use shoes with spikes in the sprint competition. Organizers recommend to use
shoes for tracks.
17. Health Services
The organizer will coordinate healthcare services for participants. The Event Organizer will provide
first-aid at the event center and at each competition site. Emergency care and major hospitals are
within a 20 minute drive from each of the competition sites.
The Event Organizer will not bear responsibility related to medical costs for participants. Each
Federation is responsible for insurance of all their members.
18. Safety and Security
Israel is a modern, western society, whose infrastructure and social services are among the most
advanced in the western world. Israel is a young and dynamic nation in which everyday life is as
normal as in any other European country.
Don’t be misled by the news in the media. Israel is one of the safest countries for tourists. The state
authorities and security forces are at work constantly to ensure Israel is safe for visitors and citizens
alike. Public buildings, shopping malls and crowded events are protected by private guards and local
police. Crime against tourists is extremely rare.
Participants in EYOC 2013 will be staying within the secure confines of Kibbutz Mizra, a rural
community.
Israel has excellent health and medical services. In general, tap water is fine for drinking, and no
special vaccinations are required prior to entering the country.
19. Weather
The summer months in Israel (May to October) are very hot and dry, making it very difficult to train
during this period. However, weather during the winter months (November to March) is generally
mild and ideal for orienteering training.

20. Media
All media representatives are welcome to come and cover all the EYOC 2012 events.
Media services and facilities will be provided at the event center at Mizra.

21. Visas
Visitors are welcome to Israel. Many countries have a Visa Waiver Program with Israel which allows
their citizens to visit Israel without a visa arranged in advance.

The final entries with the exact number of competitors and officials must be sent to the organizers
not later than 30 August 2013.
The names of all competitors and officials must be submitted by 15 October 2013.

23. Entry Fees
EYOC 2013 entry fee is 200 Euro per participant (competitor and official).
Price includes:
• Start fees for all events
• EMIT card rental
• Accommodations for 3 nights (October 31, November 1 and 2)
• Meals:
Thursday: dinner
Friday: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Saturday: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Sunday: breakfast and lunch
• Model event on Thursday
• EYOC Party on Saturday evening
• Transportation between the event center and orienteering venues.
24. Payments
Payments to EYOC 2013 must be made by bank transfer by September 25, 2013:
Please note that the payer is responsible for all bank fees and charges. Entries and other services
(accommodation, catering and transport) will not be confirmed until organizer receives full payment.
