What is
Texas Hold'em Poker
Texas Hold 'em is variation
of the standard card
game of poker. There are multiple forms of poker such as 7 Card Stud, Omaha, Pot Limit Hold’em, 2-7 Draw Lowball, Razz,
amongst many others,
however Texas Hold’em is
arguably the most popular.
Although little is known about the invention of Texas Hold'em,
the Texas State Legislature officially recognizes Robstown,
Texas, United States as the game's birthplace, dating the
game to the early 1900s.
In the first decade of the twenty-first century, Texas Hold'em
experienced a surge in popularity worldwide. Many observers
attribute this growth to the synergy of four factors: the
invention of online poker, the game's appearance in film
and on television, the appearance of television commercials
advertising online cardrooms, and the 2003 World Series of Poker championship victory by online qualifier Chris Moneymaker.
Hold'em tournaments had been
televised since the late 1970s,
but only exploded in popularity
as a spectator sport in the United
States and Canada in early 2003,
when the World Poker Tour adopted the lipstick cameras
idea. A few months later, ESPN's coverage of the 2003 World
Series of Poker featured the unexpected victory of Internet
player Chris Moneymaker, an amateur player who gained
admission to the tournament by winning a series of online
tournaments. Moneymaker's victory initiated a sudden surge
of interest in the World Series, based on the egalitarian idea
that anyone—
even a rank
novice—can
become a world champion.
Although online
poker grew from
its inception in
1998 until 2003,
Moneymaker's
win and the
appearance of
televisions advertisements in 2003 contributed to a tripling of
industry revenues in 2004.

Just like at a casino or a card room, to play Texas Hold’em poker
(or any variation of poker) the main accessories required are
playing cards and poker chips. A storage case and a playing
surface of some sort are also typically needed.
POKER CHIPS:
The quantity and quality of poker
chips in a set are what determines the cost and appeal of the set.
Typically introductory products will have fewer chips (100 to 200)
and a lower quality chip, to keep the costs down. The sets targeted
at more experienced players will normally have 300 or more
chips (to allow for more players in a game), and a higher quality of
chip (closer to casino specifications). A detailed breakdown of all

PLAYING CARDS:
Playing cards are the most used
part of a poker set, although normally take 2nd priority to the poker
chips in a Texas Hold’em poker set. Just like chips there are huge
variations in quality and materials, with lower quality (and cost)
versions in the introductory sets and progressively better quality
ones in the higher grade sets. Read more about what playing cards

CARRYING CASES: Whereas a casino has large
trays on the tables to hold their chips, home players require
cases to store their chips when not playing. JACKPOT offers

The decision on how many chips
to include is a function of price
points you want to hit, and the
expectations of your customers.
BEGINNERS
New players play in smaller games, and also
want to invest less in their poker set. This is why
entry-level products will only have 100-200 chips
(enough for a 3-4 player game), and use a lower
quality of chip.
EXPERIENCED PLAYERS
These players tend to play poker on a more
regular basis. Poker has become a hobby for
them to enjoy and be played in bigger groups
(so require 300–500+ chips to play), with betting
stakes now typically similar to the cost of going
out for a night. These players will desire to play
with a nice poker set and will put value in owning
a more deluxe product with heavier poker chips.
More then anything the number and quality of chips in the poker set
determine the price points you can achieve. 500 chips cost more then
double what 200 chips costs, and this can be the difference between
hitting a $20 price point and a $40 price point. Equally important is the
quality of chip: if you include a chip worth US$0.03 / chip instead of a
chip worth US$0.01 / chip, then as you increase the number of chips
in the set the cost impact increases significantly.
The quantity of chips included in a set determines how many players
could play at once. A normal game of poker as seen on TV will have
8-10 players, however most players at home will likely be playing with
4-6 players. Here is a chart explaining how many chips are typically

What’s in a Casino Chip?
There is no more misused word in the poker chip domain then ‘clay’.
Most people assume the chips they use in a casino are made with
clay, but this is not the case. The term clay comes from the much
older chips which were, in many cases, made of a mixture of clay and
shellac. Since clay is not a durable material, newer chips have ceased
to do this and rely on longer lasting materials that can still provide a
clay-feel. CHIPCO chips are made from ceramic materials. Paulson
chips involve a mixture of plastics, complex resins, metals, and nylon
materials.
What’s in a Home - Use Chip?
95% of the chips being made in Asia stick to various types of plastic
as the core material: PP (Polypropylene), PS (Polystyrene), ABS
(Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene), are all commonly used materials.
This is lower cost, easier for mass production, and easier for
quality control. These chips are also extremely durable. One major
disadvantage is the texture of the chip. Because most of these are
very hard plastics, chips are difficult to maintain in a high stack.
This also creates difficulty in doing chip tricks because some of the
tricks, such as shuffling, rely on cohesion between the chip surfaces.
Another drawback is the lack of the gritty texture associated with clay.
Such chips also often have metal plugs in the center for added weight,
and the sound they make when played is more coin-like than the
duller, flat sound of chips with more clay oriented materials.

preferred case of choice. This relates to both their physical strength as well as their
modern look. There are many different options within aluminum cases to either reach a specific
price level, or to offer something different from your competitors. Each of these

the case is capable to handle the weight of the chip without being prone to

back of the card that shows the card
type. Generally two face styles are
commonly used, a regular face print
and a super index face. As the name
suggests the regular face print is the
standard print most card players have
come to know. The super index face
features larger size numbers and
pips, and is often used in casinos to
avoid confusion and help the visually
impaired. Considering super index is
used by more knowledgeable players
and casinos, JACKPOT typically uses
this design on the PVC (plastic) cards.

There are two popular sizes today: bridge
size and poker size. Bridge Size is smaller
at 2¼” wide by 3½” high (57mm x 88mm).
Bridge size is the standard size used for
most card games and is often used because
they are easier to handle and shuffle than
the larger poker size cards. Wide size cards
(also referred to as poker size cards) are 2½”
wide by 3½” (63mm x 88mm). Wide size cards
are vastly preferred for playing poker, and
included in virtually all poker sets.

MATERIALS
Playing cards are typically made out of
100% plastic or plastic-coated paper.
When evaluating the quality of plasticcoated paper cards it is important to
consider the paper weight, paper stock
and finish.

Paper weight This is
normally measured through its
gsm value (grams per square
meter). The heavier the paper the
more durable the cards. Lower
grade cards are around 250gsm,
middle quality ones are in the
270-280gsm range, and premium
quality are typically over 300gsm.
Paper stock Typically
cards are made with either
recycled cardboard, grey-core
paper stock, blue-core paper
stock, or black-core paper stock. The quality and cost follows
the same order, with recycled
cardboard being lowest quality
and cost, and black-core paper
being the best and highest cost.
Finish Basic cards use a simple
plastic coating, whereas more
deluxe cards will have a linen finish
with ingrained patterns to provide
a better feel and playability.
When evaluating the quality of plastic
cards it is important to consider the
printing registration, transparency, and
plastic type.

Printing Registration
PAPER VS.
PLASTIC
CARDS
Coated paper cards will bend, crease,
rip and tear. They will only be reliable for
one tournament or less. Paper cards
mark easily and don’t bend back into
shape. They become dirty and sticky
and don’t slide as well as they did when
they were new. They cannot be washed
when they do become sticky.
Plastic playing cards are much more
durable and long lasting than paper
cards. They will not crease, rip, or tear
as easily as a coated plastic card.
Plastic cards will last longer, shuffle
better, and slide across the table better.
Experienced poker players have a
tendency to leave their hole cards on
the table and simply bend a portion
of the card up to view it – this has a
tendency to warp or bow the cards
over time. Corners can become curved
and cards can appear bowed at the
middle. Plastic cards help to minimize
this nuisance because they ‘remember’
their shape better than paper cards.
Plastic cards are more expensive than
paper cards but save consumers
money in the long run.
Printing on plastic surfaces is
challenging, so a good quality,
smear-free print is important to
look for.

thick enough so that light cannot
pass through them, which allows for
