Many of us have worked together for decades – we’ve been working together for so long that we feel like a family. As many of you know, Devon Porter is Rod and Georgia’s son, but we also have other employees of the bank who are related. Sharon Taylor is the daughter of our senior loan officer, Marie Taylor Leibson. Sharon started coming to Southern Financial summer picnics when she was just a kid, back in the nineties. Devon remembers her throwing water balloons at him. Since then, Sharon put herself through school, had a beautiful daughter, and worked her way up from teller, to branch manager, and beyond. She’s currently heading Sonabank’s Human Resources department, and has been doing so for several years. Employees can always count on Sharon for level-headed advice, compassion, and deep knowledge of HR-related issues. Congratulations to Sharon Taylor, our employee of the quarter!! A well-attended 2016 Annual Meeting! Sonabank announced on April 28th that net income for the quarter ended March 31, 2016 was $2.6 million compared to $2.0 million during the quarter ended March 31, 2015. We thank our shareholders and employees for their support, and management will continue to work hard to increase loan production, raise deposits, and control expenses.” Thanks to everyone who attended! Rod, Georgia & Matt Veneri Employees & Shareholders On April 29th, Branch managers Anita Hughes and Jessica Stewart went to M.M. Pierce Elementary, in Remington, VA to do a “Teach Children to Save” Day presentation to Kindergarten and 1 st graders in Karla Kolb’s art classroom. They discussed safe and unsafe places to save money, and the kids participated in an interactive lesson where they were able to choose which place was safe or unsafe based on what they had discussed. There were lots of giggles! The students also made take-home piggy bank crafts out of plastic water bottles, and they sent them home with some activity sheets from the VBA website as well. They had a great time and Mrs. Kolb said some of her students asked if they were coming back anytime soon. 2 Sonabank New sletter Branch Managers Anita Hughes & Jessica Stewart with the students of M.M. Celina and Tia helped the students put together carbon piggy banks with Sonabank logos. We read them the “Sam’s Silly Saving Spots” story and had them participate in a game where students decide which places were “More Safe” and “Less Safe” to put their money. Kate Ryan and Anita Hughes spent time networking at the Warrenton Chamber of Commerce Woman's Business Council Luncheon with guest speaker: Virginia State Senator Jill Vogel. Empowering Women to Succeed! It was a great Chamber event. Our Upper Marlboro branch also had a fantastic time giving back and sharing career information with the children at Brandywine Elementary on April 22, 2016. They spoke to four classes (kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 5th grade) and shared with them the importance of math, reading, writing when working in a bank. Tia Pham and Celina Cuadro of the Mclean Branch with students from Barcroft Arlinda Harris and Priscilla Reynolds of the Upper Marlboro Branch Anita Hughes and Kate Ryan On March 5th the Midlothian Branch participated and volunteered for an event called Cinderella Dreams. They were ‘Fairy Godmothers’ and assisted teen girls in finding the perfect dress. Cinderella Dreams is an event put together by the Midlothian Junior Women’s Club. Area high school senior girls can come to shop for their Prom dress and accessories for a $5.00 donation. The community donates New/like-new prom/ evening gowns (recent style from 2010 or later), evening bags, new unopened cosmetics, perfume, jewelry and new unopened hosiery, hair accessories and hair spray. The Midlothian Branch participates each year. Employees of Sonabank donate items that the branch takes with them to the event. This is a great event that really helps the young girls in their community. Every girl deserves to feel like a princess and this helps them to access the tools to make their prom night a fashion success. Midlothian Branch The Clifton Forge Branch sponsored the 20th Alleghany Highlands Bike Rodeo on May 7th. This event is organized by the local law enforcement agencies to promote bicycle safety for area youth. Equipment, including 150 bikes, are given away to boys and girls who participate in the event. Sonabank is proud to sponsor such events. We care about the communities we live and work in. We appreciate our local law enforcement and we do our best to work with them in any way we can to help the people in our communities. No matter how large our bank gets, we will always maintain our small town feel. Sgt.
