Kanye
By Rob Slater
“Screams from the haters,
got a nice ring to it,
I guess every superhero
needs his theme music,
No one man should have all
that POWER.”
And yet, there
he stood. One man with
complete power over a
farm’s worth of people—
many of whom were
salivating at the opportunity
to express their distaste.
Music’s greatest villain
returning to the scene of
his most egregious misstep.
With the events of his
disastrous 2008 set still
fresh to some, Kanye West
took to the What Stage for
a face-to-face encounter
with some of his most vocal
critics under a full moon on
Friday the 13th at the 13th
Bonnaroo.
“Follow the path to
Yeezus!” one fan exclaimed
as droves of Bonnaroovians
flocked to the What Stage
around 10 p.m. That walk
to the stage carried a certain
amount of irony as the
infamous tagline “Fuck
Kanye” spray-painted on
the facade was impossible
to miss as you stepped into
the soon-to-be Church of
Yeezus.
With anticipation
and some measure of angst
filling the field in front of
the What Stage, the lights
dimmed at 10:07 PM, or,
roughly six hours earlier
than West’s last appearance
at Bonnaroo. Decked out
in a bejeweled mask hiding
his face from the masses,
he tore into the Yeezus track
“Black Skinhead” with a
ferocity that made this show
feel therapeutic not just for
the crowd, but for the rapper
as well.
West
brilliantly
juxtaposed an antagonistic
stage persona with the
mega-hits that comprise
his catalog. One minute the
crowd would be vocally
pleading with him to stop
name-checking
Howard
Hughes, Walt Disney and
former NBA commissioner
David Stern and the next
they’d be rabidly jumping
up and down at the MC’s
command as “Mercy,”
“Can’t Tell Me Nothing,”

“Jesus Walks” and “Touch
the Sky” filled the Bonnaroo
air. West actually restarted
“Touch the Sky” because he
wanted to “move the Earth”
with everyone’s energy.
“I’m the biggest
rock star on the planet. This
is real rock and roll for those
of you who grew up on real
music,” West snapped at
the crowd during one of
his several rants. He also
wasn’t shy about the 2008
incident, referencing the
“Fuck Kanye” messages on
the port-a-potties. “Tonight,
we’re going to piss all over
them,” he said to a mix of
cheers and boos.
In the end, the
cheers would far outweigh
the sporadic boos as West
pounded the crowd with
“All of the Lights,” “Good
Life” and “Bound 2”
before exiting the stage
to something he hadn’t
experienced at his previous
Bonnaroo
appearance—
mass approval. An encore of
“Blood on the Leaves” was
all that was necessary to
officially make 2008 a very
distant memory.
The day began
on the Which Stage with
music from the Michiganbased bluegrass quintet
Greensky
Bluegrass.
Shortly afterwards, across
the Farm at The Other Tent,
St. Paul and The Broken
Bones trotted out their
horn-filled collective while
vocalist Paul Janeway, who
previously had worked
security at the festival,
thanked the crowd for
joining him as he fulfilled a
dream. The energy of their
show was matched at the
Which Stage as Vintage
Trouble blasted into action
with their brand of highoctane
showmanship.
Dynamic performances with
an international feel were
par for the course at That
Tent over the course of the
day, with notable sets from
Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, The
Master Musicians of Jajouka
and A Tribe Called Red.
“This
is
like
being in the woods with
your friends—you can
be as loud as you want,”
The Head and the Heart’s
guitarist Jonathan Russell
said to a packed house at
the Which Stage in the late
afternoon. The Seattle folkrockers were just one of
the many acts to ease the
tension of the impending
Kanye landing as well as the
standard ominous feel that
comes with a Friday the 13th.
Supporting their new album
Let’s Be Still, the band
seemed to thoroughly enjoy
acquainting
themselves
with their new Bonnaroo
friends as Russell and Josiah
Johnson spent adequate time
running through the crowd.
The Wood Brothers
also did their best to loosen
everyone up with their
particular brand of feelgood music that referenced
the global unifier—alcohol.
Whiskey, wine and gin were
late night performance)
boasted one of the largest
tent crowds of the early day
as the singer/songwriter
filled his set with energetic
takes on tunes from his
latest release In the Lonely
Hour along with a cover of
fellow Brit-rockers Arctic
Monkeys’ “Do I Wanna
Know?” Meanwhile, Dr.

no time incorporating tunes
like “Lisztomania,” “Too

more much to the delight of
the crowd before everyone
shuffled off to see what
awaited them at the What
Stage.

on the Which Stage, and
Mastodon throbbed in This
Tent while Disclosure had
Super Jam : Chaka Khan & Derek Trucks
all given warm responses
at the This Tent as Oliver
Wood also reminisced about
the band’s first time at the
festival in 2006 before a

So all in all,
despite some early anxiety

in the words of Mr. West,
“the good life.”

Compiled by Mike Greenhaus
Nigel Hall
Bonnaroo Classes: ‘11, ‘13
If anybody knows their way around a Bonnaroo
SuperJam, it is Nigel Hal. The soulful keyboardist and
singer first appeared at Bonnaroo in 2011 as a member
of Warren Haynes Band. While that performance was
not technically a SuperJam, Haynes’ solo band brings
together members of several prominent funk and jam
acts, and the guitarist has long served as Bonnaroo’s most
loyal jamband ambassador. In 2013, Hall made his second
Bonnaroo appearance along with the rest of his mainstay
funk band Lettuce. The New England-bred group served
as the house band for Bonnaroo’s all-star hip-hop
SuperJam, allowing Hall the opportunity to share the
stage with rap royalty like DJ Jazzy Jeff, Schoolboy Q,
RZA, Chad Hugo, Ghostface Killah, Redman and Method
Man as well as Solange Knowles and Pretty Lights (who
played bass). As if not to be pigeonholed, last night Hall
became one of a handful of musicians in Bonnaroo history
to take party in two SuperJams when he joined another
Allman Brothers guitarist, Derek Trucks, during his souland-blues jam. Lettuce guitarist Eric Krasno, who sat out
last year’s SuperJam while on tour with Trucks, helped
orchestrate the jam session and the Lettuce Horns also
lent some extra weight. Below Hall discusses his favorite
Bonnaroo memories.
What were your expectations of Bonnaroo before your
first trip to the festival? First time I did Bonnaroo I played with Warren Haynes
Band and I remember it was freakin HOT! I wasn’t really
expecting anything—I usually dive into the unknown with
an open mind. What do you remember most about your own
performance?
I remember being a tad nervous. But I also remember
Ivan Neville standing on the side and him watching me
and somehow it made me calm, which is weird because
he’s one if my favorite keys players. You’d think if you
were already nervous that would drive you to the point if
peeing yourself.
How does Bonnaroo compare to other festivals you
have played? I thought it was crazy when I heard Pretty Lights playing
something I cut vocals on to about 30,000 people. Pretty
rad.
What was your quintessential Bonnaroo moment from
years past? I would say that last year’s rehearsal at SIR [for the
SuperJam] was pretty epic—with DJ Jazzy Jeff schooling
us on real hip hop. Just because he was on Fresh Prince
doesn’t mean that he has no credibility as a DJ. In fact,
he’s the last REAL DJ we have left.
What band would you most like to collaborate with at
Bonnaroo this year? The band I’m in this year: James Gadson, Willie Weeks,
Chaka Khan and all my friends.... Couldn’t ask for
anything better.
Darkside’s Dave Harrington
Bonnaroo Classes: ’03, ‘06
Darkside, the psychedelic and experimental but also
danceable duo of guitarist Dave Harrington and electronic
producer Nicolas Jaar, have emerged as one of 2014’s
most sought after late-night festival bands. So it makes
sense that one of Harrington’s favorite Bonnaroo sets
took place in the wee hours of the morning. A jazz trained
bassist with ties to Downtown New York’s avant-garde
music scene and improvisational masters like John Zorn,
Harrington attended Bonnaroo as a fan its sophomore year
in 2003. He enjoyed himself so much that he returned
three years later when Radiohead, Tom Petty and Phil
Lesh co-headlined the festival. One night Harrington
wandered into Centeroo alone where he caught a late
night set by New Orleans legend Dr. John where the
pianist broke out his classic 1970s Night Tripper regalia
for a special performance of his classic material. A
few years later, he hooked up with Nicolas Jaar, who
had roots in New York City’s underground minimal
techno scene, and the duo formed Darkside. Their 2013
release Psychic served as the welcome meeting
point of
PAGE
experimental-psychedelic and electronic cultures and
helped Darkside score marquee festival spots around the
globe. They will perform in That Tent at 2:30am tonight
(technically Sunday morning) and will be accompanied by
scenography from Children of the Light.
What were your expectations of Bonnaroo before your
first trip to the festival?
This will be my first time playing but I came as a fan in
2003 and 2006 I was just so excited to see a thousand
different kinds of amazing music and to see so many of
my favorite artists all in one place.
Describe your craziest Bonnaroo experience.
Being able to hear the roar of Neil Young & Crazy Horse
from miles away while I was hanging out with friends at
our campsite.
How does Bonnaroo compare to other festivals you
have played?
It’s been so long since I’ve been it’s hard to say, but I’ve
always thought it was truly awesome how Bonnaroo could
unite so many different types of music fans and create a
sense of community that was just about the music.
What was your quintessential Bonnaroo moment from
years past ?
Wandering out into the festival alone in the middle of the
night to see Dr. John play—still to this day that was one
of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen.
What band would you most like to collaborate with at
Bonnaroo this year?
So many amazing artists it’s hard to choose, but I’ve
always been a huge fan of the Master Musicians of
Jajouka and it would be incredible to just have the chance
to sit in with them!
The Black Cadillacs’ Will Horton
Bonnaroo Classes: ‘06, ‘07, ‘10, ‘12
SATURDAY JUNE 14, 2014
My First Roo
Though The Black Cadillacs have never played Bonnaroo
before this year, for singer Will Horton the festival
always feels like a homecoming. Members of the bluesbased indie rock band are based in Knoxville, Tenn.
and members of the group hail from each of the state’s
musical centers of Nashville (which is currently enjoying
a rock-and-roll revival), Memphis (which is known for
blues and soul) and Knoxville (still a hotbed of country).
Horton has also already attended Bonnaroo four times as
a fan, where he camped in the pods and witnessed iconic
moments like Radiohead’s marathon 2006 set. Bolstered
by their breakthrough album Run, The Black Cadillacs
are currently in the midst of a major festival sweep and
were recently anointed as a Summer Star by the Bonnaroo
Beacon’s parent publication Relix. After four years of
practice, Horton will make his official Bonnaroo debut this
year and will use the opportunity to showcase two sides
of their live show. They will perform a full set at the Cafe
Where Stage (9:30 PM) this evening and play an acoustic
set tomorrow on the Sonic Stage (4PM).
What were your expectations of Bonnaroo before your
first trip to the festival?
I was seventeen the first time that I went to Bonnaroo
and had heard plenty of what I should expect from older
friends: the nude parades, late shows, the camping out—it
all sounded like a wild time—but I was so excited about
the lineup that year that I focused on trying to see as many
shows as possible. To this day 2006 remains one of my
favorites. I can’t wait until we perform this Saturday
Describe your craziest Bonnaroo experience.
One of the craziest experiences I’ve ever had at Bonnaroo
was watching Radiohead in 2006. The set was amazing,
and as intense as any show I’ve ever seen. It was raining
and the whole band looked like they were having as much
fun as the rest of us. (To this day the band describes the set
as among their favorite performances.)
How does Bonnaroo compare to other festivals you
have played?
Bonnaroo is up there at the top with some other really
great festivals. It’s really special to us because it is our
home state’s festival. The audiences are hungry for new
music, and there are always awesome new additions to the
lineup.
What was your quintessential Bonnaroo moment from
years past?
Definitely my quintessential Bonnaroo experience
would be around day three—having given up on the idea
of bathing and doing anything to find shade mid day
[Laughter.]
What band would you most like to collaborate with at
Bonnaroo this year?
There are a lot of fantastic performers this year so I’ll
narrow it down to a few— Phosphorescent, Broken Bells,
White Denim, Jack White and Dr. Dog
Bon Or Oo: Syd Arthur
The U.K.’s Syd Arthur will bring their contemporary
psychedelic sound to Bonnaroo this week. The group will
perform two sets, first at the New Music On Tap Lounge
at 9:20 p.m. tonight and then they’ll close out the Sonic
Stage on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. If you haven’t seen them
yet, do yourself a favor and give it a go. Before you do
so, why not read what Syd Arthur’s Raven Bush (violin,
keyboards, mandolin) has say in his Bon Or Oo.

My Bonnaroo Day: Umphrey’s McGee
It’s been quite a ride for Umphrey’s McGee which performed at the very first Bonnaroo
back in 2002. Over the years they’ve appeared at a number of tents and also the Which
Stage before finally graduating to the What Stage on Friday afternoon. The group is not
only celebrating that milestone but also the release of a new studio album, Similar Skin.
Here’s a look at their Bonnaroo day.

Bon or Oo: Blackberry Smoke
Bon or Oo: Blackberry Smoke
The mighty Blackberry Smoke will dominate the Which Stage on Saturday at 2:15.
The group will dig in for some gritty rock, soul and blues served up Southern style.
Blackberry Smoke will scratch that itch for you, trust us. Why not prep for the
performance with these words from the group’s singer/guitarist Charlie Starr.
The world would be a better place if everyone listened to
Reason.
Name a song you sing in the shower or your car but never on stage?
My son recently pointed out that I seem to always be singing the Power Rangers theme
song, but putting different words to it.
What song that bands often cover would you be happy never to hear again?
“Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”.
What song could you hear again and again?
“Tumbling Dice.”
The one thing nobody knows about me is…
I’m a doctor.
Name a song of yours that you really dig but others don’t seem to appreciate?
I have this little tune called “Oh Happy Day” that drives my wife absolutely crazy.
Greatest TV show ever?
The Andy Griffith Show.
Greatest book?
Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe and/or Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Who is the nicest person in the music community?
Billy F. Gibbons and/or Robert Reynolds of The Mavericks
Who is the worst dressed?
Miley Cyrus and/or the Lo Cash Cowboys
True or false drummers are under appreciated?
True.
True or false guitarists are over appreciated?
True.
True or false, the best pick-up line in the world is, “Hey come out to my gig and see
me play”?
True, if your gig is at Madison Square Garden.
If I weren’t a musician I’d be a…
Auto body technician.
Percentage of professional musicians you know about whom you’d say hey that guy/
gal’s pretty cool?
50%
What’s your problem with the other 50%?
I figure people have a 50/50 shot at being cool. Some are, some aren’t.
If you could invite any three people living or dead to join you in a sumptuous preshow meal who would they be?
Abraham Lincoln, Jerry Garcia and William Shakespeare.
Greatest music movie ever made?
The Rolling Stones Cocksucker Blues.
At Bonnaroo I’m looking forward to seeing…
Everyone, but especially Jack White.
Bon or oo?
Bon.
