BACK to the BASICS of Coaching X X O 84th Annual X XX X X X XXX O OO O O O O O O O Coaching School August 1-3, 2016 Capitol Plaza Hotel, Maner Conference Center 2016 KSHSAA Coaching School Featured Speaker Dr. Jennifer Koontz – Newton Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine; Chairperson, KSHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee School Sports Safety As coaches, you understand the health and safety of your student-athletes is paramount. To reach the level of individual development and team success you are striving for, your students must remain safe and healthy as they train and compete. As coaches, you also understand the growing responsibility you have in providing for the health and safety of your studentathletes, which at times can feel overwhelming. Ideally all schools would have access to full-time professional athletic healthcare support, such as an athletic trainer, but we all understand that is not the reality for many schools in our state. So EVERYONE involved in education based athletics needs to understand how to provide the safest environment for their studentathletes while they develop individually and as a team while participating at their school. The KSHSAA is, and always will be, fully committed to helping schools and coaches provide the best participation experiences for their students. As part of this mission we are providing a special educational session during this year’s Coaching School on student-athlete health and safety issues involving heat illness and cardiac issues. This session will be led by Dr. Jennifer Koontz and takes place Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Sunflower Ballroom. Dr. Koontz, a fellowship trained sports medicine physician at Newton Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, is also the chairperson of the KSHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. This committee, made up of physicians, athletic trainers and other healthcare professionals from across the state, was formed in 2014. They serve the member schools of the Association by providing guidance in the development of potential recommendations, guidelines, policies and educational resources related to medical and student safety matters. Please make it a priority to attend this session and learn how you can continue to provide the best support possible for all members of your team! Fall sports rules books will be on sale beginning Monday afternoon at the Registration Center. There are little ears that quickly Take in every word you say. There are little hands all eager To do anything you do; And a little boy who’s dreaming Of the day he’ll be like you. You’re the little child’s idol; You’re the wisest of the wise. In his little mind about you, No suspicions ever rise; He believes in you devoutly, Holds all that you say and do, He will say and do, in your way, When he’s grown up just like you. There are wide-eyed little children Who believe you’re always right; And their ears are always open And they’re watching day and night; You are setting an example Every day in all you do, For the little ones who are waiting To grow up and be like you. 26 Location Map Sunflower Ballroom SH Parking P R B H W Maner Conference Center SH= Shawnee Room SU = Sunflower Ballroom P = Pioneer Room R = River Room B = Bison Room H = Homestead Room W = Wheat Room E = Emerald Ballroom Parking N Parking Emerald Restaurant Ballroom Atrium Parking Parking Capitol Plaza Hotel Exhibition Hall Landon Arena Topeka Boulevard Western Avenue Parking Registration 17th Street SW Kansas Expocentre Capitol Plaza Hotel 1717 SW Topeka Blvd., Topeka, KS 66612 785-431-7200 - 1-800-579-7937 Fax: 785-431-7206 Reservations at the conference center—Capitol Plaza Hotel—should be made well in advance.
