School Sports Safety
As coaches, you understand the health and safety of
your student-athletes is paramount. To reach the
level of individual development and team success you
are striving for, your students must remain safe and
healthy as they train and compete. As coaches, you
also understand the growing responsibility you have
in providing for the health and safety of your studentathletes, which at times can feel overwhelming. Ideally
all schools would have access to full-time professional
athletic healthcare support, such as an athletic trainer,
but we all understand that is not the reality for many
schools in our state. So EVERYONE involved in
education based athletics needs to understand how
to provide the safest environment for their studentathletes while they develop individually and as a team
while participating at their school. The KSHSAA is,
and always will be, fully committed to helping schools
and coaches provide the best participation experiences
for their students. As part of this mission we are
providing a special educational session during this
year’s Coaching School on student-athlete health
and safety issues involving heat illness and cardiac
issues. This session will be led by Dr. Jennifer Koontz
and takes place Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the
Sunflower Ballroom. Dr. Koontz, a fellowship trained
sports medicine physician at Newton Orthopaedics and
Sports Medicine, is also the chairperson of the KSHSAA
Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. This committee,
made up of physicians, athletic trainers and other
healthcare professionals from across the state, was
formed in 2014. They serve the member schools of the
Association by providing guidance in the development
of potential recommendations, guidelines, policies and
educational resources related to medical and student
safety matters. Please make it a priority to attend this
session and learn how you can continue to provide the
best support possible for all members of your team!
Fall sports rules books will be on sale beginning
Monday afternoon at the Registration Center.

Welcome to the 84th Annual
Kansas Coaching School
"The staff of the Kansas State High School Activities
Association has sought to develop a conference which
we hope you will find meaningful. Our commitment
to our member schools is to provide a multi-sport
educational conference at as low a cost as possible.
We hope this experience is of value to you and
perhaps more importantly, to the young men and
women whose lives you touch on a daily basis. Best
wishes for a rewarding year in 2016-17!"

Fred Aubuchon – Kansas Wesleyan University,
Salina
“Warm-Up Drills, Serve-Serve Receive
Prep Work and Serve Receive Drills”
“Blocking System with Appropriate
Drills”
Fred Aubuchon has been the head
coach of Kansas Wesleyan volleyball
since 2009. In his six seasons leading
the Coyotes, Aubuchon has completely
turned the team around from 1-34
his first season to KCAC Champions
in 2011 with a 27-11 overall record and a 17-1 mark in
KCAC play. In 2011 he led the Coyotes to their first KCAC
regular season and tournament championships since the
2007 season. The 2011 Coyotes also advanced to the NAIA
Volleyball National Championship opening round for the
first time in school history and became the first team from
the KCAC to reach pool play level at the NAIA Volleyball
National Championship since 1985. In 2013, he again led the
Coyotes to the top of the KCAC, as the Coyotes were KCAC
regular season co-champions and the #1 seed in the KCAC
Tournament. Wesleyan advanced to the KCAC Tournament
championship match for the third straight year in 2013. In
2014, Aubuchon again led the Coyotes to the top of the KCAC,
winning the regular season championship and the KCAC
Tournament championship and making an appearance in the
NAIA National Championship opening round for a second
time. Aubuchon also earned KCAC Coach of the Year honors
in 2014. His record in six seasons at KWU is 119-105 overall.
Aubuchon took over the Coyote volleyball program after
spending five-plus seasons at Hastings College in Hastings,
Nebraska, where he amassed an impressive 173-46 record
(.789 win pct.). Under his direction, Hastings never finished
worse than sixth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference
standings. He currently ranks No. 18 in career winning
percentage and No. 19 in total wins among current NAIA
coaches.
Chris Herron – Washburn University, Topeka
“Training the Outside Hitters”
“Multiple Player Drills”
With 12 consecutive trips to the NCAA
Tournament, Chris Herron enters his
15th season at Washburn in 2016
and will look to continue the string
of success the Ichabod volleyball
program has enjoyed since he started.
Herron has led Washburn to five
MIAA titles (including three in the
past six seasons) and 13 total trips to the NCAA Tournament
since taking of the program. He has coached at least one
All-American in every year but his first, and has been to the
NCAA Tournament in every year but his second. Herron has
seen his players earn 29 All-American awards, 66 All-Region/
District awards and 25 1st Team All-MIAA nods. With a 42578 (.845) record at Washburn, he’s won more matches than
any other team that’s been in the MIAA for that time period,
and second most among teams currently in the MIAA. He
has a 197-44 (.817) record in conference matches, putting
him five wins behind Central Missouri for most MIAA wins
since he started in 2002.
Herron has gone 500-107 (.824) in 17 total years as a college
head coach. The Willard, Missouri, native coached three
seasons at Benedictine (1999-2001) and went 75-29 (.721)
with the NAIA school. Winning the MIAA, or even just
winning at all in the MIAA, has become a new trend since
Herron took over in 2002. In the 12 years (1990-2001) that
Washburn was an MIAA member before Herron, the Lady
Blues went 169-265 (.389) overall and 68-110 (.382) in the
MIAA with no conference titles and no NCAA tournament
appearances.

3. Knowledge Of Rules
Coaches have a responsibility to be aware of KSHSAA rules (general and those specific to their sport)
and NFHS playing rules (or other rules specific to their sport: Golf-USGA, Tennis-USTA). NFHS, USGA

Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first,
and the lesson afterwards.

There Are Little Eyes Watching
There are little eyes upon you,
And they’re watching night and day.
There are little ears that quickly
Take in every word you say.
There are little hands all eager
To do anything you do;
And a little boy who’s dreaming
Of the day he’ll be like you.
You’re the little child’s idol;
You’re the wisest of the wise.
In his little mind about you,
No suspicions ever rise;
He believes in you devoutly,
Holds all that you say and do,
He will say and do, in your way,
When he’s grown up just like you.
There are wide-eyed little children
Who believe you’re always right;
And their ears are always open
And they’re watching day and night;
You are setting an example
Every day in all you do,
For the little ones who are waiting
To grow up and be like you.
