NOVEMBER
A PUBLICATION OF THE OC SKI CLUB
President’s Corner
Eileen Finn LeMatty
President
November is upon us already.
Does anyone else think 2015 is flying
by us? Next week is the Ski and
Snowboard Expo (Volunteer some
time at the OC booth – or the Ski
Council booth & also meet Mountain
Reps. and maybe win some tickets
etc…) and the following week is the
Annual Warren Miller Movie (get
some free & some BOGO tickets).
Before we know it, our first bus
will be rolling out of Crossgates (on
11/22) for Day 1 at Killington. It is
what we have waited (the shortest) for
the last 6 months.
Remember, the bus to Killington
heads North on 87 so our 2nd Stop
is North. As a trial, the Board voted
to move that pickup point a little
further North, to MALTA- EXIT 12.
The CDTA Park and Ride is East
off the exit and there is a sign. The
goal is to encourage our Northern
ski friends to join us more often on
the bus without having to travel so
far South to then turn around and
travel North! An advantage in the
move to the Malta Park and Ride
is that it provides easier access
for the buses, no more loading and
unloading in a snow bank in the
road! We understand it is a bit further
for those who live north of Albany
(and those from the East and West
as well). We will still leave Albany
at 7:00 on weekdays and 6:30 on
weekends, and ask that those going
to the second pickup still be ready

Brrrr! The harbingers of winter
arrived in mid October, which is
when this was written. It was a
little too early for my liking! My
plants were having a resurgence
after the hot summer and looking
quite happy! Now they are not
happy. Some are still showing
some signs of life, but it will not
be long before they are gone and
covered by a blanket of snow.
SNOW! Get those skis ready,
because it is coming to a ski slope
near you very soon!
There are a few events to
help get you geared up for the

upcoming season. First is the
Snow Show at the Empire State
Plaza. The dates are November
6-8. It is a great place to do some
comparison shopping and perhaps
get a bargain on some new
equipment. You can also check
out the mountain booths and see
what is new at your favorite area.
Speaking of booths, why don’t
you sign up to help out for a few
hours at our booth? It is always
a fun time! Please see Jeff Kenton
to do so.
Right after the Snow Show,

to go when the bus arrives. We will
keep track to see how it works out
for everyone, and if the change helps
out our Saratoga area riders. You
know, there was a time, not so long
ago, when we ONLY ran buses from
Albany. As more people moved to
(or joined from) Clifton Park and the
surrounding area, it was requested
to add a second pickup point. There
were many, many, naysayers. It took a
lot of arguing (I was there! Yes, I have
been on the Board for many years
and a member for almost 22 years).
So, after much back & forth, we tried
it, and it worked out. Nowadays, we
often have more people at the North
pick up than at the Albany one. So
we continued having a 2nd pickup.
Again, this change is on a trial basis,
so not yet a permanent change and
we all know change is never perfect
or easy. So I ask you all to please give
it some time and please do not give
our volunteer Bus leaders a difficult
time. They did NOT make this
change and they are volunteers. If
you have a complaint or issue, email
me if you must.
well, 4 days after is the ever
popular Applicant party. It
is a great time to meet some
new people and catch up with
some that you have not seen
all summer. It is also your first
chance of the season to win some
ski-related swag! There are ski
tickets, gift certificates and many
other fun prizes to be given away
that night! Come out and have
some fun on November 12!
at Druther’s Brewing Co. on
Broadway in Albany. $2 off all
drinks and appetizers! Come
on down and enjoy their lovely
fireplace!
The 13th and 14th are the
dates for the Warren Miller movie
at the Palace. There are five ski
tickets included in the admission
for that, so see Mike Baker at the
meetings for tickets.
Wednesday November 18th
is the date for the monthly
happy hour and it is being held
Finally, (I know, thank God!)
our trips are all open and filling.
Do not despair if you did not get
on your first choice trip - sign up
on the wait list and have your bags
packed and ready to go!! It’s almost
SNOWTIME! My last reminder
is to ALWAYS check the website
for updates, changes, additions,
specials and cancellations. It will
likely be the most up-to-date info.
I do try to keep announcements
short at meetings and appreciate
those who listen and tolerate hearing
info they already know! I am trying
to make it shorter by utilizing the
PowerPoint Slide Show. I try to keep
the PowerPoint at meetings updated
(they are as of a few hours before the
meetings), so please let me know if
there is anything you want on there
by 6:00 p.m. before a meeting.
The final event for November
is on the 25th, which is the night
before Thanksgiving. It is going
to be at Hana and is a meeting/
HH. There are many specials
and none of them involve turkey!
That is reserved for the next day!
So come out and start your long
weekend off with your ski club
friends and sign up for your first
bus of the season!
Please check the A&E article
in the LL and/or the website for
complete details of events and
any updates or changes.
NOVEMBER 19th:

Winter Fun is Here!
Snow Expo is here and Warren
Miller movies tickets are on sale.
We will all be sliding on some cold
snow soon! The buses are scheduled
to start Sunday November 22nd.
Second pickup location is EXIT 12
Malta not Exit 9 Clifton Park. I’ll be
happy to get on that first bus. Last
year I had too many surgeries and
could not start until January. We’ll
see what Mr. El Nino has in store for
us this season. I thought last year was
great. Plenty of cold smoke in them
there trees.
Be sure to take advantage of our
ski/snowboard school. Did you hear
about the free lessons! There is also
a course full of fun during race days.
Nicole has a great season planned.
Our trusted Nordic goddess will be
running buses before you know it. So
the Winter Fun is Here, finally!!!
Repeat from last month but good
info to know:
There is a “Special” page on the
website for all the bargains that we
find online. Also we get info from
members who find stuff. PLEASE
email me if you find a special that
would be of interest to our Club
members.
The Alpine Bus schedule is
posted in this liftline. Please note
that we are waiting to fill the end of

Second Stop
Change to Exit
12 Going North
Just reminding everyone that the Board changed the second stop when going north to Gore, Whiteface, Killington,
Pico and Okemo to Exit 12 Malta. There is a large park & ride on the east side of the highway in the office park. We
are NOT stopping at Exit 9 Clifton Park this year.
Winter is nearly here and the
schedule is set. We will add more
days of skiing to include Club race
days, Warren Miller lift ticket specials
and any other special that comes
along. Our goal is to run buses - lots
of buses for our members.
Two important changes have
occurred. The second stop,
going north to Gore, Whiteface,
Killington, Pico or Okemo, is
now at the Park-N-Ride Exit 12,
Malta. The lot is east of the highway
in the office park. I am writing this
article in Oct, so I assume the budget
passed and the bus rates have
increased by $2 for everyone.
Please always bring cash on the bus
to pay for seats and lift tickets. We do
take checks at meetings but no credit
cards except via PayPal on line.
Now is a good time to remind
2
LIFTLINE November 2015
everyone of the bus procedures. All
buses are pre-pay. You are reserving
your seat on the bus. You can do this
using PayPal, or at a Thursday night
meeting or even on the bus. We sell
seats for upcoming buses on the ride
home. We try to make it as easy as
possible for our members. Family
(7-17 yrs) of members/applicants pay
$12 to reserve a seat and can only ride
buses that are designated “Family
Bus Days.” On Sundays only, every
second bus is a family bus. Family,
age 7-17, can ride the bus with their
accompanying parent or guardian.
Guests of member/applicants are
welcome on the bus but they pay $22
for their seat that includes the $5 “one
day membership fee”. That means
Guests will pay an extra $10 for the
privilege of skiing with the OC Ski
Club. Member/applicant must ride
the same bus with their guest.
What about drive ups? We
offer so many options here. They
are welcome. However, you must
pre-pay for the lift ticket either
at a meeting, or give your money to
someone riding the bus, or meet the
bus at Crossgates or at the second stop
to pre-pay the bus leader for your lift
ticket. You must meet the bus at the
ski area to pick up your lift ticket.
WE CANNOT ACCEPT CASH
AT THE MOUNTAIN FOR LIFT
TICKETS.
Please listen to the announcements
by the Bus Leader. They have
volunteered to lead the bus that day.
They will always remind you about
loading the bus, leaving time from the
mountain, ski/board rental, lessons,
and any other important information
you need to make your day enjoyable.
For anyone new to riding the bus, the
Bus Committee has a “Cliff Note”
sheet that explains everything you
need to know. Just ask for one at
the Thursday Bus table or download
a copy of Bus Procedures from the
website. We are no longer labeling
a bus as a “party bus.” Don’t ask us
which one it is. Adults can ride any
bus of their choice and we will guide
family to ride the second bus.
If you have questions or
complaints, contact the Bus
Committee at ocbus@ocskiclub.

ones who set bus procedures. Get

preparation for our first bus Nov. 22

OC Family is off to a fast start so
fast that I missed October Lift Line
& almost missed November. Either
getting older or my kids’ fall sports is
making time FLY! As you all know,
November is the time our regional ski
season annual kick-off event is held,
the Ski Show in Albany, November
6th – 8th. The Club will be there
as well as the NYCDSC and I look
forward to meeting some of you while
I work the show.
The now annual Smugglers
Notch MLK weekend trip Jan. 15th
– 18th is filling up fast. There are
approximately 2 condos left with
the trip closing December 3rd. If
interested make sure you contact
me ASAP as it looks like the trip is
going to sell out! FAMILY ski dates at

contact me.
It you are a business owner, artist,
or can offer a service ( ie computer
consulting, carpentry, massage, etc.),
please consider making a donation.
Your business will be listed on the
OC website with all the sponsors. It
could generate some business and
$$$ for you.
Here’s to an awesome season.
Remember, when hell freezes over,
the OCers will ski there too!
It you are a
business owner,
artist, or can offer

consider making a
donation to the
OC Ski Club!
If you have any ideas, or would
consider volunteering on the OC
the Ski Council. I am still trying to
get the FAMILY Ski Lesson program
off the ground with a solid club
Family member to work with Jeff
Kenton and the OC Ski instructor
team. We have not had ANYONE
step up to work towards becoming
an instructor as a family member
and this is the ONLY way this will
become a reality. Hopefully a few
family members will have an interest
this year in becoming certified to
instruct and work on getting this
program moving forward.
in order to make this another
successful OC Family Ski Season.
Stay tuned in with OC Family
events on line and via email. I
continue to encourage Family
Members to get involved and assist
our family group with the Family
buses and other events throughout
the year. As OC Family Members
your input and assistance will
benefit you, making skiing as a
Family member more enjoyable.
As always please let me know
if there is anything I can do for you

Ski Gear
Product Review
Bill Bird
There will be no SnowEast issue
this year with reviews of skis and
boards for the coming season. The
editor, Bill Jones, called it quits after
a good long run, but because I’m still
able to go to the annual Demo Days
at Stratton Mt., I offered to submit

my reviews to the Liftline this fall
for those who are looking for new
gear. By way of background, I’m
the former director of the OC Ski
Club Snowsports School and a PSIA
certified Master Teacher. For the
past 8 seasons I’ve been one of the
team testing and reviewing skis for
SnowEast magazine. It’s a tough job,
but someone has to do it.
My reviews represent my own
experience with the brands and
models tested. This past February
I was able to try 2015-16 skis from
Salomon, Kastle, Blizzard,
Nordica, Atomic, Rossignol and
Volkl over 3 days on typical eastern
conditions as well as a day of boot
top powder. My reviews this month
will focus on skis for more specific
conditions (powder, racing).
POWDER SKIS
Blizzard – Blizzard offers a huge variety of wide skis to
choose from. I skied several of those including the Bonafide
and the new Zero G 85 and 95 skis. The Bonafide offers a
true all-mountain ski that would be at home on the groomed
as well as in deep powder. For an interesting experience, try
the Zero G. The idea behind the design and materials of these
skis is to create a virtually weightless feeling ski that floats
effortlessly when in deep snow and is nimble on anything else
– like groomed and crud. They can function as touring skis with
free-heel bindings, and they also come in a 108 width. The
models available to test were the 95 and 85, set up with step-in
bindings, but they are sold flat, so make them your own.
POWDER SKIS
Atomic – The Vantage series
in the 100 width is a real option for
eastern skiers who want a ski that
will do the job on those all-too-rare
eastern powder days. It’s also a
proven performer as an all-mountain
ski, so it would be a solid choice for
OC’ers who travel with the club to
states/countries that tend to have
awesome powder skiing.
Atomic – The Vantage Series
Blizzard Bonafide
Rossignol – The Soul 7 is one
of Rossi’s most popular skis. Skiing
them in shin deep powder, it’s not
hard to see why. They are light and
playful, easy to turn when floating
through the fluff, but when the snow
gets skied out, these skis will still
give you a great ride.
Rossignol – The Soul 7
Volkl Kendo
Volkl Mantra
4
LIFTLINE November 2015
Salomon Q Series
Salomon Rocker 100
Volkl – The Volkl line also has a growing
choice of wide skis to consider. The Mantra
and the Kendo were among the skis I tested,
and both were fun on the powder run. I
preferred the Mantra but only because I
thought it was the more versatile of the two
– able to move from the deep snow to the
packed and crud with ease.
Blizzard
Zero G
Salomon – Please see my
reviews of the Salomon Q series
and the Rocker 100 in the earlier
article. As much fun as these skis
were on typical eastern snow, they
were completely at home on the
powder trail I skied (that was almost
untouched even as the day went on).
It was the perfect test run for fat
skis, and these didn’t disappoint.
Adding to the appeal are price
points that give you great value, and
Salomon could be the answer to your
search for one ski that will have fun
anywhere.
RACING SKIS
Atomic – Without a doubt, the Atomic Redster
Double Deck XT was the most confidence inspiring ski I
was on in 3 days of testing. I saved it for last, and I pushed it
as hard as I could, trying to find an upper limit. It had none,
as far as I could tell. I love to ski fast, and without a race
course to test on, I looked for the most rutted up part of the
trail – not hard to find at the end of the day – and stepped
on the gas where it looked really beat up. This ski cruised
through it all and made it feel easy. Anyone looking to step
up their game in club racing events should look seriously at
the Redster Double Deck.
Blizzard – My own preference in a
personal ski is my Blizzard R Power, the
brand’s high performance ski in 2013.
Their new RC Ti and WRC Racing
models are Blizzard’s high end racing
models. They both have Blizzard’s rock
solid ride and Velcro-like edge hold, and
would be formidable competition on any
club race course. The RC’s dimensions
are more suited to slalom racing. The
WRC would feel at home on a GS course.
Blizzard
RC Ti
Blizzard
WRC
Racing
Atomic Redster Double Deck XT
Salomon – The Salomon
X-Race is one of the brand’s most
popular European skis. It was an
impressive hard-charging ski that
did everything I asked of it, with
no hesitation and no limits. Again,
Salomon makes great skis at very
competitive prices. The X-Race
is no exception. If you just want
a great frontside ski with race
technology built in, this would be
an excellent investment that won’t
break the bank.
Salomon
X-Race
Volkl
Race
Tigers
Volkl – I’ve always been a fan of Volkl
Race Tigers. The first time I skied a pair at
demo days a number of years ago, I wanted
to buy them on the spot. This year I tested
the GS and SL models. My own skiing style
favors the GS model, but both skis offer
Volkl’s legendary stable ride no matter what
the snow conditions. It all skis like groomed
snow to the Race Tiger. Those OC’ers who
ski them for racing will attest that they are
awesome on the hardpack, the race course,
and in general on frontside trails. They zoom,
so be ready if you click into a pair.
