2015 was a year of gratitude, once again.
We said goodbye to the Jacksons, honored to have Shelley and Rob’s
16 years of dedication as head of our Bement family. Many of you
expressed thoughts to the Jacksons in various ways: some wrote
messages, some gave presents, some had conversations, and all were
meaningful. Our permanent gesture of thanks to the Jacksons is the
new name of our girls dormitories, “Jackson House”. We are grateful
for these Jackson House donors, loyal to Shelley and Rob, and their
sustaining support of this school. Our special thanks in the success
of this campaign goes to Lisa and Mike Kittredge P’04 ’18 ’21, who
hosted a celebration for the Jacksons in their endless generosity to
Bement, and to Susan Clopton P’03, Frank Henry P’05 ’08, and
Robert Cohn P’03 ’06, past board presidents who worked with
Shelley and Rob during their tenure and co-chaired the Jackson House
campaign. We were astounded by how our Bement community rallied,
not only in support of Jackson House, but also in support of our
Annual Fund, which surpassed its goal in the same year. We’re proud
of our donor support this year, and in particular these highlights:
•
The Jackson House campaign raised more than $400,000 from
147 donors.
•
425 donors gave a total of $341,775 to our Annual Fund.
•
Our current parents continued to raise their participation rate in
the Annual Fund, from 53% several years ago, to 70% in 2014
and 80% in fiscal year 2015.
•
At its height during the year, our endowment value reached
$6,744,628 as we continue our focus on endowment growth.
•
The Bement Bridge Grant, which supports a qualifying local,
lower school student with financial aid to cover full tuition
expense, raised an additional $105,000 this year and will support
the Bement experience for an additional student next year.
One of the most important of Shelley Jackson’s legacies is the
gratitude she bestowed on so many of us throughout her years here.
We all knew how thankful Shelley was for our involvement at
Bement, as teachers, students, alumni, parents, grandparents, or
trustees. As the Jackson era has come to a close, Shelley and Rob’s
many marks on the school are ingrained in its ethos, with gratitude
the cornerstone. On behalf of everyone at Bement, I thank you for
supporting The Bement School this year in all the ways that you
have, and for your continued dedication to providing an exceptional
Bement experience for our students.
