Mammography is a crucial tool when it comes
to detecting breast cancer. Tomosynthesis,
offered at Henry Ford Health System, takes
mammograms to the next level. This advanced
test creates detailed, 3-D images of the breast,
increasing breast cancer detection in women
with dense breasts. Find out more on page 3.

New 3-D Breast
I
t’s a proven fact: mammography
saves lives. But it’s not foolproof.
It can miss cancer, especially
in women with mixed-density or
dense breasts, which contain more
glands, ducts, and connective
tissue than fat. Density makes it
harder to detect suspicious lumps
on a mammogram. That’s because
glandular tissue appears white on a
mammogram, just like a mass can.
Fortunately, Henry Ford Health
System now offers tomosynthesis,
the latest in breast cancer detection
that can give you a clearer picture of
your breast health. “Tomosynthesis
is the greatest innovation in breast
imaging in 10 years,” says Patricia
A. Miller, M.D., FACR, Director of
the Division of Breast Imaging in
the Department of Radiology at
Henry Ford.
Make Time for a Mammogram
“Tomosynthesis
is the greatest
innovation in
breast imaging
in 10 years,”
says Patricia A. Miller,
M.D., FACR
It can also decrease false positives.
“Women with dense or mixeddensity breasts who undergo
tomosynthesis are less likely to be
called back for additional imaging,”
Dr. Miller says. Tomosynthesis
can be used for screening and
diagnostic mammograms. A
screening mammogram usually
takes just 15 to 30 minutes.
Convenient,
Comprehensive Care
Henry Ford offers a multidisciplinary
breast cancer detection and treatment
team of providers, including
pathologists, breast surgeons,
medical and radiation oncologists,
nurse navigators, social workers,
The American Cancer Society recommends
that women ages 40 and older receive a
yearly mammogram. To schedule this
lifesaving screening, please call
1-800-HENRYFORD.
and occupational therapists.
These experts work closely to offer
high-quality, coordinated care.
“We pride ourselves on providing
appropriate care to ensure good
outcomes and helping patients
navigate through the system,”
Dr. Miller says.
Tomosynthesis is available at
our West Bloomfield and Macomb
hospitals and our Brownstown,
Dearborn-Fairlane, and New Center
One Detroit medical centers. “We
offer more tomosynthesis units
than any other health system in
southeastern Michigan,” Dr. Miller
says. Tomosynthesis is covered by
Medicare and most health
insurance plans, but check your
policy to be sure.
For your convenience, Henry Ford
offers both two-dimensional digital
screening mammograms and
tomosynthesis mammograms seven
days per week across the system.
Same-day results are usually
available. Results are sent to the
Henry Ford MyChart electronic
medical record system, which can
be accessed online, so you can see
your results quickly.
www.henryfordoptimeyes.com
What Is Tomosynthesis?
Tomosynthesis is a digital
mammogram that uses X-rays to
takes nine images of the breast
in thin sections. “The resulting
three-dimensional image allows
radiologists to more easily
distinguish a mass from overlapping
structures that can hide or mimic
cancer,” Dr. Miller says.
Tomosynthesis increases breast
cancer detection. Three more
women per thousand will receive
a cancer diagnosis because of it,
compared with a standard, digital
mammogram, which is significant.

the new Henry Ford OptimEyes
(HFO) Southfield Super Vision
Center, a haven for high-quality eye
care and eyewear. Consider visiting
Southfield for all your vision needs,
such as eye exams.
“Everyone needs a comprehensive
eye exam,” says Dr. Andrew Bolles,
Director of Clinical Services at the
Southfield location. Whether or not
you wear eyeglasses or contacts, it’s
important to get your eyes checked
yearly, especially if you’re older than
age 60, when age-related eye diseases
such as cataracts and glaucoma
can arise.
Eye care is key for kids, too.
“About 70% of learning is visual, so
we want to make sure kids and teens
can see everything they need to in
school,” Dr. Bolles says.
Bigger, Better
The full-service Super Vision
Center, at more than 17,000 square
feet, features 22 exam rooms and
several eye care professionals,
including ophthalmologists and
four optometrists, one of whom
is a pediatric optometrist.
“We’re equipped to manage the
gamut of primary care — from routine
eye exams to testing and managing
any eye disease, such as diabetic
retinopathy or glaucoma,” Dr. Bolles
says. “We can get you in the same
day for an appointment, if necessary,
and get test results the same day.”
Frames for All Budgets
If you’ve got your eye on a new pair
of glasses, you’ll have over 2,500
frames to choose from at Southfield,
including designer lines such as
Tom Ford and Jimmy Choo. “We
have frames for every budget, with
frames starting at $49,” says Tara
Scott, the Southfield General Manager.
“We’re your one-stop shop for all
things eye-related.”
Focusing on Convenience
and Safety
To accommodate your busy
schedule, the new Southfield
location is open seven days a
week — 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday
through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday.
If you were a patient at the
Southfield or Detroit Northwest
Medical Center offices, your medical
records have been transferred to the
new facility. Even parking is a breeze
— the large lot offers numerous
spots and improved lighting so that
patients with low vision are better
able to navigate the space.

“We’re really excited about
this holiday season because in
addition to the large selection

offer, we’ve added lines by luminaries such
as Jimmy Choo, Bobbi Brown, and Tom
Ford,” says Cheryl Malik, Lakeside Super
Vision Center. “These frames are classy
and absolutely beautiful.” HFO offers name
brands for kids, too, such as Converse and
Lucky Brand, with bright, bold designs. For
those ages 14 and younger, HFO provides

Prescription sports goggles with polycarbonate lenses
provide clear vision needed on the court, at the club, or on
the playing field while helping prevent eye injuries. Malik says,
“Nonglare treatments are also a smart choice because they
reduce glare.” Many styles come with an elastic strap that
secures the goggles on the head — so your loved one can forget
about adjusting eyewear and focus on making the score. Aubrey
Kalota, HFO Commerce Township office, suggests sports
glasses with Transitions Vantage lenses for those often on or
around the water. “These high-tech lenses polarize as they get
darker in outdoor light, reducing glare while sharpening vision.”

Show how much you care
by gifting a loved one a quality
eye exam. “A yearly
comprehensive eye exam is
one of the best things people
can do to preserve their sight
and protect their health,” says
Dr. Barry Bell, HFO Commerce
Township office. “That’s
because there are common eye
diseases, such as glaucoma and
diabetic retinopathy, that often
have no early warning signs but
can be detected during a dilated
exam. An eye doctor will also
pick up any changes in the eye
that may signal other health
problems, such as high blood
pressure and high cholesterol.”
Need a referral to one of Henry
Ford’s skilled doctors? We can
help with that, too.

Searching for a little extra something to delight
your loved ones? Here are a few top picks
suggested by the Henry Ford OptimEyes’ team:
● Peeps, a revolutionary lens cleaner in the
form of a retractable brush that quickly and
easily removes oily fingerprints and dust
● Holiday-themed eyeglass and
contact lens cases
● ThinOptics reading glasses, which
are slim, flexible, and available in different
colors. They are stored in a case that
conveniently snaps onto your cellphone.
You snooze, you lose — at least when it comes to
flex dollars. “Flex dollars and vision benefits expire soon, so
make sure you use them!” says Shannon Kunz, Downriver Super
Vision Center. Flex dollars can be used to purchase anything in
Henry Ford OptimEyes’ stores, including eye exams, glasses,
sunglasses, accessories, and cleaning solutions.
Worried that flex dollars won’t fully cover your eye care and
eyewear? Consider CareCredit™. “CareCredit™, a credit card
for health-related expenses, helps you pay for out-of-pocket
expenses not covered by your insurance,” Kunz adds. Spend
$200 or more on items and services, and you may not have to
pay interest. Find out more at carecredit.com.

aise your hand if you’ve ever sprayed your glasses
with window cleaner or wiped them with the edge
of your shirt.
Chances are you’re not alone, but you may want to
consider another way to care for your lenses. Using
cleaners that aren’t specifically designed for today’s
high-tech lenses can cause scratches, leave streaks,
and lead to greasy buildup.
The answer? The OptimEyes Lens Essentials Care
Kit. The kit includes a 1-ounce bottle of lens cleaner
spray, a 6-ounce bottle of refill cleaner, a microfiber cloth,
and premoistened towelettes — perfect for storing in
your purse, jacket, or glove compartment. The lens spray
is safe and effective on all types of lenses and coatings,
including nonglare and antireflective. Even better, you
can also use it on all your electronic screens — TVs,
computers, and tablets, too.
You’ve already invested in an awesome pair of glasses or

The Facts
on
Floaters
10
A
s you get older, you may
notice grayish wisps —
known as floaters — drifting
across your field of vision.
The Origin of Floaters
Floaters are tiny condensations
of the vitreous humor, the clear,
jellylike fluid that comprises your
eyeball. Floaters occur when the
vitreous humor peels off and
detaches from the retina, the layer of
specialized cells at the back of your
eye that’s responsible for vision. If
you notice floaters, don’t panic —
they are a normal part of aging.
“One hundred percent of people
will get floaters as they age,” says
Nitin Kumar, M.D., Senior Staff
Ophthalmologist and a Vitreoretinal
Surgeon at Henry Ford Health
System. But if you’re extremely
nearsighted, you may start to see
floaters at an earlier age.
When to See a Doctor
Floaters typically don’t require
treatment. But a sudden increase
of floaters, especially when
accompanied by flashes of light,
may signal a retinal problem, such
as a retinal tear or detachment.
Retinal detachment can cause
blindness. If you have these
symptoms, seek a retinal exam.
Fortunately, retinal problems
are treatable. “We can use a laser
outpatient procedure to repair a
retinal tear and prevent retinal
detachment,” Dr. Kumar says.
Mending a retinal detachment,
on the other hand, requires a trip to
the operating room. In most cases,
the retina can be reattached with
one surgery. Still, for the sharpest
vision and to reduce the potential
for vision loss, “it’s better to catch
a retinal tear before it becomes a
detachment,” Dr. Kumar says.
