Goodfellows goals, history & the need
­Goals
The Southfield Goodfellows is an all volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The primary goal
of the Southfield Goodfellows is to assure that no child in Southfield or Lathrup Village is forgotten
during the Holiday Season. We also assist in meeting the food requirements of needy families senior
citizens in the community at this special time of year.
Our secondary goal is to provide assistance to individuals year-round through our Urgent Needs
Program. This assistance for unforeseen hardship is conducted on a case-by-case basis, as long as funds
are available. The City of Southfield Human Services Department manages the program on behalf of the
Southfield Goodfellows.
History
In 1946, a handful of concerned citizens of Southfield Township recognized the need to assist a small
number of families for the Holiday Season. The group chose to pursue this mission by emulating the
traditional Goodfellows program. Community, religious and service organizations, as well as companies
and local government, were each asked to commit two members to direct this effort. The response was
overwhelming and the Southfield Goodfellows organization was born.
Since those early beginnings, Southfield and Lathrup Village have become incorporated cities whose
needs have grown along with their population. We continue to expand our efforts year after year and
tailor our program to meet the ever-changing needs of these communities.
tHe­Need
Requests for assistance come from a range of ages, family units, and diverse cultures. Our clients
include many single-parent families, families headed by unemployed or physically impaired breadwinners, as well as senior citizens. The incomes of all our clients fall within the Federal poverty
guideline as established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
How­we­serve­tHe­CommuNity
The Southfield Goodfellows receive recommendations from social workers, school personnel,
religious institutions, police and fire departments, and concerned citizens to identify both families and
individuals in need in the Southfield and Lathrup Village communities. A case worker at the City of
Southfield Human Services Department reviews these recommendations and arranges for the submission
of Request for Assistance forms to the Southfield Goodfellows in order to qualify applicants.
Qualified applicants receive food boxes and food certificates. Families with children, enrolled in high
school and younger, also receive gifts and clothing certificates for each child. This is accomplished
through fund-raising events and donations of food and toys from schools, individuals, groups, and
corporations. Purchases are made by funds raised through general solicitation to the community through
our newsletter mailing and newspaper sale. Packages are prepared at our distribution center for pickup
by recipients in mid-December. Food boxes for senior citizens and those with special needs are delivered.

I absolutely love the Christmas season. I love the picturesque view of the
world drenched in glistening snow (but in
my fantasy, the roads are always snowfree). In spite of it being freezing outside,
the holidays make me warm. The
scenery is etched into my mind: Red,
green, silver, and gold decorations and
twinkling lights as far as the eye can see;
the sounds of children laughing; yummy
cookies, chocolates, and other holiday
treats to nibble. People even seem to
smile more as you pass them on the
street. It truly is the season of love, fellowship, and giving; after all, it is the
most wonderful time of the year.
Houses are lit and decorated with
oversized, animatronic inflatable characters to draw more attention for the man
of the hour. During the later hours of
Christmas Eve, kids take over the
kitchen to bake cookies only for ol’ Saint
Nick. There is the anticipation of Santa
Claus coming to town and leaving
presents.

This holiday is a special treat for our
children, but the seniors have a special
place in our hearts as well. As our motto
states, “No child or senior should be forgotten at the holiday season.”
Recently, my family gathered to celebrate my grandparents’ 72nd wedding
anniversary. After lots of food and laughter, my brother asked my 91-year-old
grandmother to tell his son what it was
like when she was a girl. She told stories
of growing up during the Great
Depression with her seven younger
siblings. She was responsible for looking
after her brothers and sisters, which did
not allow her much time to enjoy being a
kid. Though times were hard for this family of 10, they still managed to create
great memories. My 94-year-old grandfather’s childhood was a similar tale. He,
too, is the eldest of his siblings—the big
brother to five.
As a couple, they have had decades
of togetherness as well, and they raised
a family that has grown to 20 members.
We come together every holiday and
every birthday, but we also come
together when one of us is in need. Over
the past 30 years, my grandparents have
faced a number of illnesses, three of
which were cancers. Through it all,
they’ve had each other, but they also had
all of us: two daughters, three grandchildren (plus their spouses), nine greatgrandchildren, and one great-great
grandchild to care for them and to
love them.
As the eldest in both of their families,
my grandparents were tasked with the
care of their siblings. Sadly, today they
are the last of their immediate families.
That led me to think about the seniors in
our community. They may be in
Southfield or Lathrup Village all alone—
after all, many have settled here from
distant lands. Some speak little or no
English, making them feel even more
isolated. I imagine it must be challenging
and lonely for them, especially at this
time of year.
But there is something we can do. We
can reach out to them; after all, kindness
is universal. Our seniors have much to
offer us. We can benefit from their years
of knowledge and experiences, as they
are our untapped treasures. Let’s
embrace them as parts of our extended
families.
Please be a blessing to others and
share with them what you can this
holiday season. A monetary gift of any
size would truly help our cause.
Remember: true abundance isn’t measured by what you have, but rather by
what you give.

ORGANIZATION CAN SAVE YOUR HOLIDAY
So, it's your turn to host the big family holiday gathering. You're
already having panic attacks and nightmares over all that must be
done. As hostess, you know you'll be on your feet all day; cleaning,
cooking, warming and replenishing multiple dishes, answering the
door, hanging up coats, cleaning up spills, washing dishes. By the
time it's all been handled, the guests are beginning to leave. Not to
mention, you never sat down and visited with family or even ate.
There has to be a better way. Well, there is a better way. Planning
ahead and organization is key to a well-run event, happy guests, and
a relaxed, well-fed, and entertained YOU.
4 days before the event: decorate the house- hang garland & lights,
set out centerpieces & candles
3 days before the event: clean the oven, wipe down kitchen blinds,
dust, make cold dishes
2 days before the event: bake desserts, mop the kitchen, put greens,
cabbage, and green beans in crock pot
Leading up to the event, schedule a few tasks each day to lighten
your load and stress level.
1 day before the event: chop vegetables & bake cornbread for dressing/stuffing, chop cheese for macaroni & cheese, late evening- make
creamy desserts like banana pudding & cheesecake. For the guest
bathroom, set out decorative hand towels, stock the vanity with tissue & soap, and clean guest bathroom
7 days before the event: dust/clean all of those things you hardly
ever- the mantel, china cabinet shelves, ceiling fan, light fixtures
above the kitchen & dining room tables, top of the refrigerator, top &
underside of the stove fan hood, entertainment center, under sofa
cushions, and clean the carpet (if necessary)
The day of the event: In the morning- vacuum, have the
kids/spouse shovel & salt the driveway/walkway. 6-hours before
guests arrive- put the turkey, roast beef, and/or other meat in the
oven. 3-hours before guests arrive- bake the dressing/stuffing and
macaroni & cheese
5 days before the event: clean the refrigerator, determine the
flow/layout of kitchen for the day of the event- noting the optimal
locations of plates, silverware, napkins, glassware, main courses,
hot & cold dishes, desserts, put away kitchen appliances that will
take up needed counter space

Southfield Goodfellows Food Drive
For the past several years, the community has supported the Southfield Goodfellows by organizing food drives.
Last year, the food drive ran from September through November, and several of the Southfield Public Schools
participated in the annual campaign. There were also a couple of businesses and a neighborhood community
organization involved in this drive. The schools set up drop-off stations where the students brought canned food
and non-perishable items to donate. The 2012 competition winner was Vandenberg World Cultures Academy
with a collection of 2,000 canned food and non-perishable items.
The Southfield Goodfellows distributed 14.5 tons of food, which was predominately donated by Forgotten
Harvest, the Southfield Public Schools’ food drives, as well as donated and purchased food from Gleaners
Community Food Bank. In addition, Denso donated non-perishable food items. Food collected in 2012 served
1,408 recipients including 545 families — 310 senior families or families without children and 235 families with
568 children living in Southfield and Lathrup Village.
We extend a special thanks to Forgotten Harvest for their support in picking up the food donations from
the schools and to the City of Southfield Department of Public Works for delivering the food boxes to the senior apartment buildings.
In addition to collecting a great deal of food for the
families of Southfield & Lathrup Village, the
following schools also contributed:
• Thompson Middle School: $1,054 donation
({led by Dawn Rankin} from the Student
Council sponsored “Party With A Purpose”
Dance & concessions + a Dress-Down Day)
• Stevenson Elementary School: $705.16 donation ({led by Sue Philbin} from potato chip & ice
cream sales + a Turkey Trot Run/Walk)

GETTING INTO THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT
As soon as Thanksgiving comes to a close, I get so excited for the Christmas season. It has been a long
standing tradition in my home, to put up the Christmas tree and to decorate the entire first floor of the
house the day after Thanksgiving. There are actually four Christmas trees in the house- full-size trees in
the living room and family room, a 4 foot tree in my son’s bedroom, and a one foot tree in my eldest
daughter’s bedroom. Of course, the outdoor Christmas decorations, with the exception of the 5 foot
plastic Santa, inflatable snowman and Winnie The Pooh, and lighted candy canes have been up since the
week before Halloween. No, I’m not Christmas Crazy like at the malls. They have their Christmas displays
in full effect at the same time as their fall displays. It’s just that after countless years of side-ways freezing
rain-snow combos and my fingers, toes, & face being frozen stiff, I’ve learned to decorate before the frigid
days of November and December. At work, I decorate my cubical with a miniature tree, red garland, and
lights. Also, I listen to my cherished Christmas CD’s and cassette tapes. It’s because of the tapes that I held
on to my radio with dual tape recorder. I guess it’s pretty apparent that I’m in the ‘40 something’ category.
Anyway, this year, I plan to step up my game by decorating my bedroom. I’ll hang twinkling icicle lights
from the headboard and tops of the vertical blinds. Maybe I’ll get another tiny tree for the dresser. It’s also
at this time of year that I step-up for others. Getting into the spirit of this holiday would not be possible
without the most important ingredient of giving.
GIFTS WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH
Sure, the department stores have gifts for everyone on your holiday shopping list, but are they special
enough to show just how much you care? Does a sweater or perfume really say, “I love you Mom”? Can a
pair of jeans or the latest Jordan’s express a mother’s love to her son? There’s nothing like a gift that comes
from the heart.
Try a gift made by your own hands. I still have many of the presents my kids made when they were in
elementary school. The ornaments adorned with their photos and lots of glitter, hung on our Christmas tree
for years until, that is, they disintegrated. Consider a gift that captures a special moment in time. Here are
a few suggestions:
* Decorative box of a variety of your best homemade cookies, candies, pies, and/or cakes
* Knitted/croqueted scarf, hat, & mitten set, baby blanket
* Memento of a vacation or special time in his/her life (ex: charms for a bracelet or necklace)
* Embellish a picture frame with tiny scrapbook charms of his/her favorite things or hobbies (ex: for the
outdoors man, select fish, tents, campfires, and boats)
* Create a photo book or scrapbook
Consider giving the gift of relaxation and pampering. These are busy and stressful times. We are overworked and over-committed. We do so much for others, but there is little “Me Time”. We never seem to find
the time or justify the expense to do something nice for ourselves. Below are a few personal gift certificate
ideas. And by the way, there is nothing wrong with hinting to your loved ones that you would enjoy one of
these, as well.
