begun to showcase the device’s ample potential, and the
company has put the Kinect
in the spotlight for this year’s
Xbox 360 software lineup.
During its press conference yesterday at the 2011
Electronic Entertainment Expo
(E3), Microsoft unveiled a
host of titles and services for
the console, the majority of
which make use of the Kinect
to put a whole new spin on
consumers’ game-playing

Starting off the press
conference was the first-ever
gameplay demo of Activision’s
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
3. The latest installment in
one of the best-selling game
franchises of all time, the
game places players in the
role of an elite soldier amongst
an erupting World War III. The
demo took enthralled onlookers through an underwater
expedition, a raid on an enemy
submarine and an intense,
gunfire-laden boat chase.
As with previous Call of
Duty games, Modern Warfare
3 on the Xbox 360 will be the
first to receive downloadable
content such as expansions
and map packs.

lectronic Arts (EA)
kicked off its E3 2011
press conference with
a bang yesterday at
the Orpheum Theatre in Los
Angeles, where the company shined a light on several
upcoming games that span
numerous genres and platforms. As explained by CEO
John Riccitiello, EA opted to
let the games themselves do
the talking, with video footage
and live gameplay demonstrations. “That’s really it,” he said.
“Nine games by nine of the
most talented development
teams on the planet.”
EA began the presentation by showing new footage
from one of its biggest guns:
Mass Effect 3, the concluding
entry in the science fiction
role-playing saga. Casey
Hudson, executive producer
at BioWare, presented the
game to the audience and
announced an official launch
date of March 6, 2012 for the
Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation
3 (PS3) and PC. In addition to
video footage showing new
storyline and action elements,
EA also demonstrated a previously unseen mission in which
Commander Shepard—the
customizable player character—battles enemies first
on foot and later from a gun
turret mounted to a moving
hovercraft.

Next, Microsoft and Crystal
Dynamics gave audiences the first
look at Tomb Raider—a prequel
to the popular, multi-million selling
franchise from Square Enix. Tomb
Raider puts players in the shoes
of a young, inexperienced Lara
Croft, who was been stranded on a
strange and dangerous island in the
South Pacific. Lara has to endure
grueling hardships to survive in
this terrifying, harsh environment—
learning skills that will eventually
build her into the strong, capable
adventurer that gamers have come
to know and love. Danger lurks
around every corner for Lara,
and players will need to use wits,
reflexes, and instinct to escape
constant peril.
Peter Moore, president of EA
Sports, took the stage next. Moore
announced that EA would be supporting the Kinect, with this year’s
Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Madden,
and FIFA sports game franchises
all set to utilize the unit. Moore also
teased an as-of-yet unannounced
sports franchise in EA’s stable, as
well as EA franchise titles The Sims
3: Pets and Hasbro Family Game
Night 4, all of which will have some
form of Kinect-driven functionality.
Mass Effect 3 and Tom Clancy’s
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier were
the next titles to be unveiled. Mass
Effect 3 closes out the famous roleplaying science-fiction saga, and
for the first time ever, the game’s
Kinect-driven dialogue sequences
and combat were unveiled. By
issuing voice commands to the
Kinect unit, players can respond
to in-game conversations and give
orders to teammates during combat. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
also showcased a unique firearmcreation mode that allows players
to assemble and test in-game
Kinect Star Wars

weaponry using Kinect voice
commands. The game’s publisher,
Ubisoft, announced that all future
Tom Clancy-branded game titles
for the Xbox 360 will include some
form of Kinect support.
But these impressive titles were
only the beginning. Microsoft
unveiled an upcoming Xbox 360
dashboard update with increased
Kinect support, as well as a host
of new entertainment services.
Voice-enabled Kinect commands
will be used to access a broad
amount of entertainment content,
including on-demand music,
movies and games. The addition
of popular Internet-based videosharing service YouTube into the
dashboard was welcomed with
audible approval from the crowd,
as was the new voice-driven
implementation of the popular Bing
Internet search system. With a
series of simple voice commands,
Kinect users can utilize Bing to
search the web for all manner of
entertainment options. In addition,
live TV programming will allow Xbox
360 owners to enjoy and record
content from numerous channels,
and a partnership with the popular
UFC mixed martial arts promotion
company will allow fans to enjoy
pay-per-view events quickly and
easily.
These interface improvements
were followed by a flurry of exclusive Xbox 360 game demonstrations for the core gamer audience.
Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games, Inc.
took the stage with actor and rapper Ice-T to showcase the intense,
co-operative shooting gameplay in
the hotly anticipated Gears of War
3. Crytek’s newest effort, Ryse,
showcased a Roman city filled with
marauding soldiers as a player
utilized Kinect’s motion-tracking
technology to slash his way to
victory.
The frequently rumored Halo:
Combat Evolved remake came to
light as Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, set to release in November, complete with updated visuals,
classic environments and Xbox
Live-based multiplayer options.
Forza Motorsport 4 showcased its
breathtakingly realistic, exquisitely
detailed cars and tracks, complete
with a brand-new, Kinect-powered
gallery view that allows fans to admire their vehicles. A new chapter
in the Fable saga, Fable: The Journey, will utilize Kinect to transform
the popular RPG franchise into a
first-person, action-fantasy experience. Finally, the popular PC megahit Minecraft will make its console
debut exclusively on the Xbox 360
with Kinect capabilities built in.
Following hot on the heels of
Minecraft were several familyoriented game announcements.
Kinect Disneyland Adventures
allows families to explore the
Disneyland in a brand new, wholly
engaging fashion. Kinect Star Wars
puts players in the role of a Jedi
fighting against Imperial forces
with lightsaber combat, martial
arts, and Force-driven environment
manipulation abilities.
Tim Schafer of Double Fine Entertainment demonstrated Sesame
Street: Once Upon a Monster, an
educational game that uses the Kinect to allow kids and parents alike
to interact with favorite characters
like Elmo and Cookie Monster.
Kinect Fun Labs, a permanent
addition to the Xbox dashboard
available now, allows players to
download and enjoy fun and varied
mini-games that make use of the
Kinect hardware. Kinect Sports
Season Two lets players take their
Avatar characters and compete in
all-new sporting events with both
voice and motion controls.
Microsoft closed out its press
conference with a teaser for
a brand new installment in its
phenomenally popular Halo series.
The footage shown of Halo 4,
teased as the start of a brand-new
trilogy, was brief, with merely a few
glimpses of famed hero Master
Chief and impressive views of
space, but it was more than enough
to get the collected crowd cheering
with excitement and anticipation.
As the Xbox 360 and the
Kinect continue to maintain their
popularity, Microsoft showed E3
attendees that its hardware will
continue to offer fresh, immersive
and fascinating experiences going
into the future.

Mass Effect 3 continues the tale
of Shepard, who must save the
earth from total destruction by the
powerful alien Reapers. In addition
to combat, players must make
decisions over the course of the
campaign that can change how
the game proceeds and ultimately
ends. Players can import their
completed Mass Effect 2 data
into the game to continue their
unique quest, and the Xbox 360
version of Mass Effect 3 includes
Kinect support for conducting
conversations and commanding
allies in combat.
Following the Mass Effect 3
demonstration, EA quickly shifted
gears to another upcoming title,
Need for Speed: The Run. Developed by its Black Box studio, The
Run offers a unique new twist on
the long-running racing genre, as it
features a storyline about an illicit
driving competition as well as opportunities for play outside the car.
A live demo showed how players
might flee a vehicle to evade police
capture, jumping from rooftops
and performing other actions. With
distinct locations between San
Francisco and New York, as well
as scripted action and on-foot
sequences, Need for Speed: The
Run offers gamers a new slant
on traditional racing games and
launches this fall for Xbox 360,
PS3, Wii, PC and Nintendo 3DS.
BioWare made a second showing at EA’s conference to spotlight
Star Wars: The Old Republic, a
massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) expected
to launch later in this year for PC.
Alongside a video trailer that included familiar sights and sounds from
the legendary science fiction series,
BioWare Austin general manager
Dr. Greg Zeschuk announced that
the game is playable on the E3
show floor this week.
Offerings from EA Sports
dominated the middle section of
the press conference, which was
guided by label president Peter
Moore. Smoke machines created
an atmosphere of mystery before a
trailer for SSX revealed new details
about the upcoming snowboarding
game. The revival of the franchise
offers three ways to play, including races, trick competitions and
action-oriented survival stages, with
realistic mountain courses from
all over the world available in the
game. Developed by EA Canada,
SSX is due out in January 2012 for
Xbox 360 and PS3.
Moore then introduced Matt
Bilbey, vice president and general
manager of football at EA Sports,
who stated that soccer simulation
FIFA 12 will be, “without question…the most realistic FIFA ever.”
The multiplatform series—which
launches this fall for Xbox 360,
PS3 and Nintendo 3DS, among
other platforms—introduces more
physicality to the player interactions this year via the new Player
Impact Engine. Also debuting is
the EA Sports Football Club, a free
online service that lets FIFA players
access new content based on realworld soccer matches and interact
with friends and rivals.
EA called upon the talents of
three National Football League
star players to introduce the latest
entry of its best-selling football
simulation series, Madden NFL 12.
Cover athlete Peyton Hillis from
the Cleveland Browns was joined
by Ray Lewis from the Baltimore
Ravens and Clay Williams from
the Green Bay Packers to build
audience excitement for the entry,
which launches on August 30 for
Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PlayStation 2
and PSP. Madden NFL 12 introduces enhanced television-style
presentation, along with the new
ability to create complete custom
playbooks for teams.
Following the conclusion of
the EA Sports lineup, EA turned
to an entirely different genre and
platform by announcing The Sims
Social, an extension of the popular Sims franchise for Facebook.
No release date was announced,
but the brief video trailer showed
the game’s customizable
characters flirting and interacting in home environments, and
indicated that Facebook users’
status updates may factor into
the experience.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
from the EA Partners co-publishing
label—a fantasy role-playing game—
appeared next. Presenting the title
was Curt Schilling, former Major
League Baseball pitcher and now
founder and CEO of 38 Studios. Codeveloped with Big Huge Games,
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
also features the efforts of other
notable contributors, namely New
York Times best-selling fantasy writer
R.A. Salvatore and comic book artist
Todd McFarlane. The single-player
experience is due out in 2012 for
Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Ted Price, founder and CEO of
Insomniac Games, then took the
stage to introduce the studio’s
brand new intellectual property,
Overstrike. Set in the near future,
the Xbox 360 and PS3 cooperative action game spotlights
a team of four agents who are
seen as misfits of the organization—but when called into action
the group works together to stop
a powerful enemy force. The
video trailer demonstrated the
same kind of flair for unique and
inventive weapon designs as seen
in Insomniac’s Ratchet & Clank
series, with the human operatives
wielding gadgets such as an electricity-flinging crossbow and an
energy shield that captures bullets
and fires them back at foes.
To close the press conference,
EA circled back to a realistic action
game: Battlefield 3, the latest entry
in the first-person shooter series.
Featuring intense combat set in
the near future, the game includes
a single-player campaign that lets
players level buildings with explosives, as well as offering online
multiplayer battles that include a
heavy emphasis on vehicle usage.
In addition to a brief video showing
footage of a multiplayer battle set
in Paris, EA showcased a lengthy
demonstration of the game’s
single-player mission featuring tank
combat to conclude the show. Set
for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and
PC, Battlefield 3—which is developed by series creator DICE—hits
stores on October 25, with an open
multiplayer beta testing period
beginning in September.
With its high-impact press
conference enticing E3 attendees
to experience the action firsthand at the company’s booth, EA
demonstrated its mastery of action,
role-playing, sports and social
experiences designed to appeal to
players of all ages and interests—
for this year and into 2012.

LAUNCH SEQUENCE INITIATED
ACITIVISION UNVEILS LINEUP, FEATURING TITLES FOR 2011 AND BEYOND
F
eaturing titles that span a
wide range of demographics, Activision’s E3 lineup
offers hit franchises, urban
warfare, superheroes, evil villains
and revolutionary concepts in
child’s play.
The publisher’s heavy hitter is
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
(MW3), slated for release November 8 on the Sony PlayStation
3 (PS3), Xbox 360, and PC. The
latest chapter, developed by Infinity Ward with the help of other
studios, MW3 brings its brand of
first-person warfare to the urban
settings of Manhattan and London, then expands throughout
Europe and parts of Africa, Russia
and the Himalayas. The game
picks up where its predecessor
left off: Washington DC is burning,
and the player joins with Delta
team in Manhattan to attempt to
turn the tide against the Russianoccupied city.
To complement the launch of
MW3, Activision will also unleash
its unique new multiplayer service,
Call of Duty Elite. Designed to
leverage the series’ online userbase, Elite gives players a hub
from which to engage in all things
Call of Duty. Career statistics and
information, video sharing and
tournaments are just some of the
options the new service brings to
the table.
On the other end of the spectrum comes the publisher’s
newest kid-centered franchise,
Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure.
Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure
By incorporating physical toys,
Activision hopes to revolutionize
the way kids relate to toys. Using
technology inside the toys themselves, each toy is integrated into
a platform/action game that spans
across Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360, as
well as mobile and PC platforms.
Set for release before the end of
the year, the game includes both
player vs. player and cooperative
multiplayer modes, and a deep
campaign that traverses jungles,
volcanoes and island environments. How the game is experienced will vary from player to
player. In addition, everything that
an individual child accomplishes
with a character is saved to his
or her physical toy, from achievements to items gathered.
Another of Activision’s fall releases, Wappy Dog also embraces
the notion of the interactive toy. In
Wappy Dog, young gamers connect physical toys with the virtual
world, raising their own interactive
puppies to adulthood through their
Nintendo DS units.
Rounding out the publisher’s
showings is a host of superhero
titles. Prototype 2, developed by
Radical Entertainment in Vancouver, takes the original game’s
open-world urban gameplay to
new heights. The game will take
place in a highly infected New York
City. Alex Mercer, protagonist of
the original Prototype, has become
an evil, nearly god-like entity, and
the player fills the shoes of a new
character, Sgt. James Heller, to
stop the malevolent Mercer. New
tendril powers and scaled-up destructible environments take center
stage in this new release, which
is slated to hit PS3 and Xbox 360
in 2012.
Activision’s other superhero
franchises are getting their own
treatments as well. Spider-Man:
Edge of Time, scheduled for release this fall, is being developed
by Activision-owned studio Beenox. The game sees players take
on the roles of both classic Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man
2099, in order to correct a ripple
in time and prevent a catastrophic
future brought on by the death of
Peter Parker.
Rounding out Acvitision’s
E3 lineup is In X-Men Destiny,
an action/RPG launching in
September for Xbox 360, PS3,
Wii and Nintendo DS. Players
control the fate of one of three
brand-new mutant characters,
and a branching storyline has
been written by Marvel writer
Mike Carey, allowing players to
customize their character’s journey
and powers.
With its strong lineup at E3
showcasing a breadth of offerings
across many genres, Activision
once again delivers powerful
storytelling, innovation and
sizzling gameplay for game fans
across all generations.

Michael D. Gallagher
President and CEO, ESA
Most people who attend
e3 are well aware that this
blockbuster industry event is
owned by the EntErtainmEnt
SoftwarE aSSociation
(ESa). we recently had an
opportunity to discuss e3 and
other esa initiatives with esa
ceo Mike GallaGher.
Q:
We hear so much buzz in the industry
about E3—the excitement, the glitz,
the games and the clamor of it all. From your
perspective, what do you think is so unique
about E3 that it can bring together this mass of
people each year?
E3 represents the best things about the computer
and video-game industry—the intersection of
technology and creativity, pushing the boundaries
of what is possible and creating a sense of wonder
and excitement. Consumer appetite for our industry’s
products is bigger than it has ever been. If a device
has a screen, you can bet consumers are using it to
play games no matter where they are. Our industry is
constantly innovating and when all that energy is under
one roof at E3, it is incredible.
Q:
Can you give us an idea of the kinds
of people who attend E3? How
international has the show become?
All the major leaders and influencers of this industry are
at E3. We have publishers, developers, retailers, media,
analysts and business partners attending from around
the world. Last year we had attendees from more than
200 countries and we expect an increase in international attendance this year. E3 is the place to do business
and it sets the tone for the global industry at large.

Q:
Most people here know the ESA owns
E3. What some people may not know
is that the ESA works on behalf of the entire
industry, on issues like censorship and global
anti-piracy. Could you tell us briefly what
programs the ESA runs?
We offer a range of services to interactive entertainment software publishers including a global antipiracy program, business and consumer research,
government relations and intellectual property
protection efforts. The ESA Foundation also works to
improve the lives of children and, in addition to providing grants to non-profits, runs a scholarship program.
Q:
Especially in the light of emerging
digital distribution, how big a problem
is software piracy currently?
Preventing piracy and protecting intellectual
property are primary objectives of the ESA’s mission.
During 2010, ESA vendors detected 144 million
peers illegally sharing select member titles on P2P
networks, which does not include downloads that
occur through other Internet resources, such as
“one-click” hosting sites. Having so many pirated
copies in circulation hurts developers, writers, artists
and others who spend years creating games. Even
with digital distribution’s popularity, we still see
demand for black market hard goods, especially
internationally. These include circumvention devices
that enable the use of illegally copied games. The
ESA works closely with other pro-copyright industries
and governments to encourage improvements to laws
and enforcement in countries with high piracy rates.
Q:
Another key factor facing the industry
is censorship. Can you tell us how the
U.S. Supreme Court case went last year, and
in general about the ESA’s efforts to prevent
legislative censorship?
The case before the U.S. Supreme Court, Brown
v. EMA/ESA, is the most high profile in a series of
cases the ESA has fought on behalf of the industry
to preserve our First Amendment right to artistic
expression. We find that these legislative challenges
begin at a very granular level in state and local
legislatures, perpetuated by misinformation about
the content of games and who has access to them.
The more we can educate policy makers, media and
parents alike about the ESRB ratings system and
the effort of the industry to self-regulate access to
mature content, we will broaden the support for and
understanding of our industry’s protected status
under the First Amendment—to the same degree as
other forms of media like movies and music.
Q:
Tell us about the Video Game Voters
Network (VGVN) and how people
can join. What happens when people join?
How do members make their voices heard?
Do Members of Congress and/or local
legislators find Internet-based groups like
this persuasive?
The Video Game Voters Network is the grassroots
coalition of voting-age gamers who take action to
defend video-game artists’ creative freedoms and
works. It’s free and easy to join—anyone of voting
age in the U.S. can log on to www.videogamevoters.
org and sign up. Members will receive action alerts
when there is activity in their state or at the federal
level, which outline steps to take to make their voices
heard. We have had great success contacting legislators through email, phone calls and letters about
pending legislation to regulate game content, and
also to thank legislators who are vocal supporters of
the video-game industry.
Q:
Most of us come to each year’s E3
with a couple “must-see” or “mustdo” items. I’m sure you aren’t supposed to
show any bias toward any specific companies, but—off the record—do any specific
titles interest you personally this year? (Oh,
wait, I guess we’re on the record.)
One of the great things about E3 is that the entire
industry puts it all on the line. The experience is not
about any single title—it is about the cumulative
innovation, excitement and energy of our industry’s
remarkable hardware and software. At the end of the
show, I am left with a deep sense of pride in what our
industry is capable of.
Q:
The huge blockbuster games we can
probably find on our own. But since
you get out onto the E3 floor before anyone
else, any tips on hidden gems tucked away in
the corners that shouldn’t be missed?
I think what I have found most exciting is that there
is something here for everyone—every taste, genre,
story or challenge. And, it is very satisfying to see the
high interest throughout the entirety of the hundreds
of thousands of displays. Each year brings more
“gems.” I hope you enjoy the quest.

SQUARE ENIX REACHES NEW REALMS OF FANTASY

for their ability to whisk
players away to fantastic,
engrossing new worlds.
Square Enix, Inc., known for the
worldwide smash-hit Final Fantasy
titles, is renowned for crafting
deep, engaging stories and
environments that consumers can
connect with. This year’s lineup
from Square Enix takes E3 2011
attendees into some of the most
beloved franchises in video games,
all with intriguing new twists.
The popular Final Fantasy
series will see a brand-new entry
in Final Fantasy XIII-2, tentatively
scheduled for release early next
year for the Xbox 360 and Sony
PlayStation 3 (PS3). Following up
where Final Fantasy XIII left off, this
installment follows the continuing
adventures of heroine Lightning.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 promises,
amongst other features, a revised
version of FFXIII’s combat system,
an all-new story following up on
the events of the original game, the
debut of a mysterious rival to Lightning, and a mix of old and new
locales to further bring the game’s
world to vibrant, breathtaking life.
But Lightning is not the only
storied heroine in Square Enix’s
Final Fantasy XIII-2
stable. Game icon Lara Croft is
also on the E3 show floor, with a
fresh look and a new quest in Tomb
Raider. Going back to the rough,
challenging days of Lara’s youth,
Tomb Raider tells the story of a
girl enduring intense physical and
emotional hardships and emerging
from them a braver, stronger
woman in the process. Fresh out
of college, Lara embarks on her
first-ever archaeology expedition,
only to have the ship she travels
on torn apart in a terrible storm.
Players are tasked with helping
Lara survive in a harsh, unforgiving
environment. Tomb Raider will be
available on the Xbox 360, PS3 and
PC systems in 2012.
Survival in a strange, harsh
environment is also the name
of the game in the eagerly
anticipated Deus Ex: Human
Revolution. Developed by Eidos’s
Montreal studio, this journey
back into the universe of Deus Ex
puts players in the role of Adam
Jensen, a cybernetically-enhanced
human caught in a global
conspiracy. Human Revolution
features a mix of intense shooting
and critical decision-making,
allowing players the freedom to
approach their objectives and
build Adam as they see fit. Deus
Ex: Human Revolution will be
available in stores during late
August for the Xbox 360, PS3 and
PC. A limited Augmented Edition,
which includes a making-of DVD,
soundtrack, motion comic and art
book will also be available.
Rounding off Square Enix’s
diverse lineup is the long-awaited
return of suave, cold-blooded
Agent 47. IO Interactive’s Hitman
Absolution makes its world
premiere for the Xbox 360, PS3
and PC on the E3 show floor this
year. Featuring the new Glacier 2
game engine, Hitman Absolution
puts players back in the familiar
shoes, suit and gloves of the
world’s deadliest assassin. In this
new game, Agent 47 takes on a
particularly difficult contract then
finds himself being doggedly
pursued by police—and betrayed
by those he trusted. Players
will take Agent 47 on a journey
with more drama and character
development than any Hitman
title to date as they unravel a
twisted truth in a world overrun
with corruption. Hitman Absolution
promises both familiar and new
gameplay elements that will please
franchise fans both old and new.

R
ecent years have seen the
market for video games
in Eastern Europe grow
tremendously. Now one of
Russia’s most successful developers and publishers of online and
strategy games, Nival, is expanding into a new hemisphere. Nival’s
new Los Angeles office plans to
bring games for PC, Mac and mobile platforms to audiences across
the Americas.
King’s Bounty is a long-running
strategy game series with a
worldwide fanbase. This year Nival
expands the franchise with King’s
Bounty Legions, a new browserbased strategy game developed
with the social-game market in
mind. King’s Bounty Legions is a
3D turn-based tactical role-playing
game designed for social networking platforms. The game allows
competition against other players
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
for the first time in series history,
and will be updated regularly with
new maps, monsters and other
items. King’s Bounty Legions will
also offer microtransactions and the
ability to engage friends for incentives. The game is set to go public
later in 2011.
The other major title on Nival’s
slate at E3 is social game Prime
World. This free-to-play realtime strategy game for PC, Mac,
Android and iOS integrates players’
existing social network connections
into gameplay, allowing friends to
team up and fight together in a rich,
detailed fantasy setting. Players
can build and manage a personal
army of heroes to take into battle,
where effects like constantly changing terrain have a huge impact on
strategy. No release date has been
announced yet; a public beta is
planned for later this year.

S
oftware Developer and publisher UTV Ignition Games
is showing a wide range of
titles at E3 this year, including puzzle, action-adventure and
role-playing games for consoles,
handhelds, iOS and Facebook.
Introduced at last year’s E3 and
now playable on the show floor
is El Shaddai: Ascension of the
Metatron for the Sony PlayStation
3 (PS3) and Xbox 360. Developed by an internal studio whose
credits include Devil May Cry,
Resident Evil and Okami, UTV’s
El Shaddai: Ascension of the
Metatron is a third-person actionadventure game inspired by alternate biblical mythology as told
in the Dead Sea Scrolls. As the
human Enoch, players are caught
in a battle between Fallen and
Heavenly Angels and must save
mankind from a planet-cleansing
flood. El Shaddai: Ascension of
the Metatron is out now in Japan,
with its North American release
date to be announced.
Due this fall for the Nintendo
3DS is Fractured Soul 3D. The
company’s first Nintendo 3DS
effort is a sci-fi inspired platformer
with a twist: its action takes
place simultaneously across both
screens of the 3DS. With gameplay
reminiscent of classics Castlevania
and Mega Man, players will lead
hero Jake DeSaul through five
different worlds and 20 levels as he
confronts his demons and attempts
to reconcile the past.
Puzzle-game fans have two
engaging titles to choose from:
Mercury Hg, which will be
released on July 4 for Xbox Live
Arcade and PlayStation Network,
and Quarrel for iOS, Facebook
and XBLA. Mercury Hg takes the
series’ skill-based mechanics
to new dimensions, challenging
players to navigate a blob of
mercury through environments
of ever-increasing difficulty, and
now offering levels that react to
music and player interaction.
Quarrel is a fresh take on word
games, with players given a
group of letters and challenged to
find the best word from the mix.
But there is more at stake than
simple scorekeeping, as players
try to dominate an island against
opposing troops of up to three
other players. Quarrel is due to be
released before the end of 2011.
E3 attendees can visit the
UTV Ignition booth to sample
even more of the company’s
other offerings, including Planet
Crashers 3D, due this holiday for
the Nintendo 3DS, and Dragon’s
Crown, due in 2012 for the PS3.

A
tlus (Index Digital Media,
Inc.) has long served
video-game fans as a
publisher of one-of-a-kind
titles. Its E3 2011 lineup again
bears out that approach, spotlighting unique offerings across
genres and platforms.
Leading the pack this year is
Catherine, an Xbox 360 and Sony
PlayStation 3 (PS3) game where
players take the role of Vincent, a
man who falls for the mysterious vixen Catherine, and finds
his world upended by intense
feelings of fear and anxiety. The
emotion-laden adventure—which
incorporates puzzle and horror
elements—hits stores on July 26.
Another notable entry in the Atlus lineup is The Cursed Crusade,
a fantasy-themed combat action
game set in the Middle Ages in
which players can team up with a
friend online or on the same screen
for cooperative play. The Cursed
Crusade arrives on Xbox 360, PS3,
and PC later this summer.
Also showing at E3 this
year are Shin Megami Tensei:
Devil Survivor Overclocked for
Nintendo 3DS and Shin Megami
Tensei: Persona 2: Innocent
Sin for the Sony PlayStation
Portable—both entries in the
company’s successful and longrunning role-playing series.
The Atlus lineup is rounded
out by two downloadable games:
side-scrolling fantasy action
sequel Trine 2, and Rock of Ages,
a strategy game in which players
roll boulders to demolish enemy
fortresses. Both multi-platform
releases will debut on Xbox 360,
PS3 and PC this year.

Batman Arkham City
STORIED AND
STORYBOOK ADVENTURES
WARNER BROS. INTERACTIVE REVEALS STAR-STUDDLED LINEUP
W
arner Bros. Interactive
Entertainment, Inc. (WBIE)
has a dynamic lineup for
E3 2011, spanning the
stylistic spectrum while retaining
its celebrated focus on compelling
stories and characters throughout.
Batman Arkham City leads the
pack as the much-anticipated
follow-up to 2009’s Batman Arkham
Asylum. Developed once again by
Rocksteady Studios, Arkham City
fuses action and stealth elements
in stylish fashion. All of the great
gadgets that made their way into
the original are returning, while
new ones like smoke bombs and
a broadcast tracer allow gamers
to mix things up. The title, which
ships in October for Xbox 360,
Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) and
PC, incorporates more in the way
of puzzle elements as well. For
instance, Batman’s “Detective
Mode” lets the Caped Crusader
employ forensic analysis to help
catch perpetrators, and a criminal
database lets the masked crusader
track villains across the city.
Another huge franchise once
again making its way to the interactive space courtesy of WBIE is
Snowblind Studios’ The Lord of
the Rings: War in the North. Based
on events in the northern region of
J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, the
game concerns events not explicitly
covered in the films or previous
games. The title incorporates cooperative play among as many as
three users, each of which take on
a different hero. War in the North is
slated for an August release on the
PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
Releasing today alongside Warner Bros. Pictures’ summer blockbuster Green Lantern, WBIE’s Rise
of the Manhunters puts gamers in
the boots of gifted pilot Hal Jordan.
Players use the superhero’s Power
Ring to build an assortment of
weapons from green energy in order
to defeat the nefarious Manhunters,
which are out to destroy the pilot’s
inner circle. The game is presented
in 3D on consoles that can accommodate it, and it features the
likeness and voice talent of Ryan
Reynolds as Hal Jordan. It ships for
Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Nintendo 3DS
and Nintendo DS platforms.
Also launching this summer on
Xbox Live, and on PC later in the
year, is the first title from developer
Supergiant Games, entitled Bastion.
The RPG features gorgeous,
hand-painted environments and an
elaborate, compelling narrative. The
game reveals its rich back-story as
the narrator reacts to the player’s
actions, dynamically providing
added depth to the player’s
experience as The Kid, who is
piecing together remnants of a
shattered world.
Finally, WBIE will release the
Xbox 360 Kinect title Sesame
Street: Once Upon a Monster this
fall. From Tim Schafer’s celebrated
Double Fine Productions, the
game showcases the studio’s
family-friendly talent. Sesame
Street characters such as Elmo,
Cookie Monster and Oscar the
Grouch come along for the ride
as players discover a long-lost
children’s book. While the children
read, they become part of a living
storybook adventure, befriending
monsters and helping them solve
their problems through page-bypage exploration. The game also
features co-op gameplay designed
for sibling- and/or parent-child
cooperation, rounding out WBIE’s
lineup with a universally appealing
license title that can be enjoyed by
the whole family.

Hulk Hogan’s Main Event
MAJESCO OFFERS EXCITING ADVENTURES FOR ALL
M
ajesco Entertainment has
been publishing games for
a wide variety of audiences
since 1986. The company is
renowned for delivering a diverse slate
of respected properties—from actionpacked BloodRayne to family-friendly
Cooking Mama. This year’s wideranging slate at E3 looks to be even
more as successful for the publisher.
Hulk Hogan’s Main Event leverages
the unique, hands-free controls of
Kinect for Xbox 360 to make players
feel like they are in the ring and in the
action. Under the tutelage of wrestling
superstar Hulk Hogan, players can
learn and then pull off more than 50
physical tactics, special moves and
hair-raising stunts. Hulk Hogan’s
unique brand of brawling comes to
game rooms in September.
Zumba Fitness 2 brings another
intense dose of dance-infused fitness
to the Wii. Based on the global
“fitness-party” that has more than 12
million participants dancing in 125

sequel offers 30 new songs and dance
routines. Celebrity Zumba instructors
Tanya Beardsley, Gina Grant and
Beto—the creator of the Zumba
phenomenon—provide private lessons
in more than 20 different dance styles
and five different game modes. The
new workout begins in November.
Video-game femme fatale Rayne
returns in BloodRayne: Betrayal.
A download for Xbox Live Arcade
and PlayStation Network, Betrayal
will introduce a new generation to
the supernatural half-vampire in
a side-scrolling action game that
offers a nostalgic nod to the classics
while keeping a high-definition edge.
Respected developer WayForward is
tasked with bringing the high-octane
action of BloodRayne to online
networks this summer.
Gamers looking for thrills, action
and a killer workout will find all they
seek in the Majesco booth at this

In addition to viewing
topnotch game software,
attendees at E3 can also
test drive leading-edge
hardware and peripherals that
make for even more immersive
game experiences. Veteran accessories manufacturer Nyko will
be showing off a 2011 lineup that
includes cutting-edge peripherals for a range of platforms. At
the top of its list, Nyko’s Zoom is
built for Xbox 360 Kinect users in
tighter spaces than the technology
recommends. Essentially a lens
attachment for the Kinect sensor,
the Zoom is designed to shorten
the distance required to play
motion-controlled games, cutting
Microsoft’s recommended six-tonine feet down to four-to-seven
feet. For Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3)
owners, Nyko’s Charge Base 3 is
a redesign of the company’s PlayStation 3 controller charging dock.
The Charge Base 3 holds controllers in a tidy, compact new vertical
orientation, as well as employing
magnetic charging dongles for
added protection.
The company will be showing
off a host of peripherals for the
Nintendo 3DS as well. These
include the Play Clock, a charging

Video Games Live
VIDEO GAMES LIVE
PERFORMS AT E3
WORLD PREMIERE MUSIC FROM WORLD OF WARCRAFT: CATACLYSM,
RESIDENT EVIL 5 anD MUCh MORE
A
traveling celebration of videogame music and culture,
the renowned Video Games
Live concert returns to E3 on
Wednesday, June 8, for an 8 p.m.
performance at the Nokia Theatre.
Tickets are available for purchase in
the South Hall Lobby.
Created by veteran composers
Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall, Video Games Live has been energizing
sold-out crowds for six years with
its signature fusion of interactive
entertainment, music and theater.
“This is the greatest video-game
music of all time, played by a full
symphony and choir,” Executive
Producer and Show Host Tommy
Tallarico says. “But what makes it
unique is that everything is completely synchronized to massive
video screens, rock-‘n’-roll lighting,
a stage show production, special
effects and interactive elements. It
really is a multimedia music spectacular that can be enjoyed by the
whole family.”
No two Video Games Live shows
are ever the same, and the annual
concert at E3 is traditionally where
new material and special guests
make their debut. Those who
attend Wednesday night’s show will
enjoy world premieres that include:
music from World of Warcraft:
Cataclysm conducted by Blizzard
Entertainment’s own Russell
Brower; selections from Resident
Evil 5 conducted by composer
Wataru Hokoyama; and favorites
from the classic Earthworm Jim.
In addition, “Video Game Pianist”
Martin Leung will play a new piece.
Fans will also experience a rock‘n’-roll take on Street Fighter II and
renditions from Halo: Reach’s stirring
soundtrack, as well as selections
from Command & Conquer, Portal’s
“Still Alive” and an operatic interpretation of Tetris. This year’s show even
puts exciting new spins on some old
favorites. For example, Composer
Christopher Tin will conduct his
Grammy Award-winning “Baba Yetu”
from Civilization IV, and composer
Kinuyo Yamashita will play the pipe
organ during a rock version of the
Castlevania theme, which she wrote
at the age of 17.
Audience involvement is a
PREY
2
hallmark of the Video Games
Live
experience, from the atmosphere
of the pre-show festival to the postshow meet-and-greet. Anyone who
dresses up as their favorite video
game character can take part in a
costume contest, the winners of
which will be decided by audience
applause. The winner of a Guitar
Hero competition will also take to
the stage in true rock god fashion,
to be accompanied by the full force
and thunder of the Golden State
Pops Orchestra and the Southern
California Master Chorale. Fans
who stick around after the final
curtain even have the chance to
chat with any number of talented
musicians, composers, performers
and industry luminaries.
All the elements of Video Games
Live combine to make it an experience that is both memorable and
moving. “It’s a complete celebration,
not only of video game music and
the video game industry, but of the
culture, the fans, the audience,”
Tallarico says. “People cry during our
shows. People have this emotional
attachment to game music. To be
in a room full of thousands of likeminded people who also have this
emotional attachment—it’s magical.”

Duke Nukem Forever

LOCK AND LOAD WITH
BELOVED FRANCHISES
NEW BIOSHOCK AND DUKE NUKEM ENTRIES LEAD
TAKE-TWO INTERACTIVE’S SHOWING
T
ake-Two Interactive has
arrived with a bang at
E3 2011, with a lineup
that highlights enduring
characters and celebrated series.
“Take-Two’s lineup for E3
features several key titles from 2K,
many of which we believe have
the potential to become breakout
hits,” comments Strauss Zelnick,
chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive. “From the return of longawaited industry icons like Duke
Nukem to the next installments of
our hit franchises such as BioShock
Infinite, The Darkness II and XCOM,
we have a broad array of offerings
on display that promise to delight
audiences around the world.”
Perhaps one of the company’s
most anticipated titles is the firstperson shooter Duke Nukem Forever, as the video game icon comes
back after more than a decade.
With Gearbox Software (Borderlands) now at the reins, the series
Nicktoons MLB
revival will launch June 14 on Xbox
360, Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) and
PC. E3 attendees get the chance to
see the iconic hero in action before
the retail debut later this month.
The Darkness II is a supernatural
first-person shooter, and a followup to the well-received adaptation
of the Image Comics series. Developed by Digital Extremes, the Xbox
360, PS3 and PC game hits stores
on October 4. The Darkness II takes
place two years after the original
and again follows Jackie Estacado,
a young mob boss in New York
City who can utilize dark powers to
summon evil minions and tentacles
as well as violent black holes that
suck in nearby enemies.
Following its successful debut
at last year’s show, XCOM—a
first-person shooter reboot of a
strategy series that first debuted
in 1994—offers E3 2011 attendees
a fresh look at the extraterrestrial
tale. The new XCOM puts players
into the shoes of a Federal Bureau
of Investigation agent in the 1950s.
Created by BioShock 2 developer
2K Marin, the Xbox 360 and PC
shooter is due before the end of
March 2012.
Speaking of the BioShock series,
the third entry in the critically
acclaimed first-person shooter franchise returns to E3 in the form of
BioShock Infinite. Slated for a 2012
release on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC,
Infinite takes place decades prior
to the earlier titles and features an
all-new setting and characters. The
new game is the work of original
series developer Irrational Games.
Also showing at E3 this year is
Nicktoons MLB, a family-focused
baseball title from 2K Play due out
on Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and
Wii this summer. The game, which
utilizes the Kinect motion sensor,
pairs cartoon characters from a
variety of Nickelodeon animated
series with licensed Major League
Baseball players.
“We hope that those attending
E3 will be excited by our upcoming
releases and later delighted by
them when they launch. In addition,
we want attendees to experience
our creative teams’ commitment
to excellence,” Zelnick says. “We
also hope that our peers display
great content at E3, as that will help
to drive consumers to retail and
grow our industry. Lastly, I hope
that E3 continues to raise awareness for our industry by illustrating
how interactive entertainment is
the most exciting sector in all of
entertainment that leads the way
for innovation and creativity.”

two games that offer quite
distinct action experiences across a

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2—a
sequel to the 2010 military firstperson shooter—puts players in
command of Cody “Sandman”
Anderson, a former Marine who
now acts as a sniper for a private
military corporation. Due out
in the first quarter of 2012, the
Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3

all-new vehicle missions and
lifelike environments based on
real-world settings.
If the ground seems too confining for some, players can take to
the skies in Combat Wings: The
Great Battles of World War II. Set
for release in September 2012 for
Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii and
PC, Combat Wings is an actionoriented flight simulator featuring
four distinct campaign modes—
each with missions inspired by
historical events (such as the
Battle of Britain). In addition, the
game offers several online play
options, including competitive
combat and racing scenarios,
and the PS3 version will support
the PlayStation Move motion

is well known for its
philanthropic initiatives.
Prominent among these is
Pro vs. G.I. Joe, a non-profit
organization that uses video
games to bring much-needed
fun to war veterans and
overseas troops.
The organization sets up
competitive online events between pro athletes and soldiers
stationed in places like Iraq,
Afghanistan and Dubai. Past
pros have included Shaquille
O’Neal, Warren Sapp and
Evander Holyfield, and these
patriotic sports stars have faced

Call of Duty.
This year at E3, Pro vs. G.I.
Joe has a 40-foot RV—complete
with HD 3D TVs, game consoles
and Internet. This customized
RV is the hub of Pro vs. G.I. Joe
giveaways and game tournaments. The organization’s West

spreading the word about the
team’s tri-fold mission: to restore
the confidence and independence of wounded veterans, to
hold entertaining events and to
reconnect active duty troops
with their families.
Although the men and women
serving on the front lines may
be far from home and loved
ones, the Pro vs. G.I. Joe team
aims to help connect and show
appreciation for these heroes by
making it their mission to “do a
little for those who do a lot.”

PARAMOUNT DIGITAL PROMISES THE DEFINITIVE STAR TREK IN 2012
W
ith a slew of TV spinoffs and a series of
blockbuster movies,
the Star Trek franchise
has become a cultural icon and
mega hit. In 2009, with the help of
director J.J. Abrams’ big screen
reboot, Gene Roddenberry’s
humble sci-fi western is once
again red-hot. Building on that
success, Paramount Digital plans
to fulfill every Star Trek fan’s
lifelong dream: letting them (for
the first time ever) take on the
role of either Captain James Kirk
or Kirk’s number one advisor and
friend, Mister Spock.
The simply titled Star Trek
game will feature a stand-alone
storyline and an exciting brand
of co-op action as Kirk and
Spock fight to protect the galaxy
from a legendary enemy race.
The script is written by awardwinning God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk, and developer
Paramount Digital is also working closely with Bob Orci and
Alex Kurtzman, writer/producers

DEAD MEN TELL
NEW TALES
COMIC AUTHOR ROBERT KIRKMAN’S WALKING DEAD GOES
INTERACTIVE WITH TELLTALE GAMES
K
The Walking Dead
icking off Halloween night 2010, a
new series called The Walking Dead
launched on AMC. Within weeks the
unsettling serial—based on a bestselling comic book about a group of zombie
apocalypse survivors—became the sleeper hit
of cable TV. After thirteen episodes the show
ended, leaving more than six million viewers
clamoring for more. This fall the series returns
on AMC; and this winter, thanks to TellTale
Games, The Walking Dead comes alive for the
first time as interactive entertainment.
Based on Kirkman’s Eisner award-winning
comic, the show examines the relationships
among a disparate group of people postzombie outbreak. Frequently cited as more a
human drama than a horror show, both the
comics and TV series are well regarded for
their thought-provoking storylines. Whether
or not the game follows existing narrative
threads, the agreement between Kirkman and
TellTale Games is an exclusive, multi-year,
multi-title deal that promises quality episodic
games of a grittier stamp than is customary for
the Marin-based developer.
Though TellTale Games is best known for
its PC titles, The Walking Dead partnership
looks to create titles on PC, Mac, console,
handheld, mobile and social platforms.
And with both Kirkman and TellTale Games
renowned for prioritizing the storyline, fans
can no doubt expect bone-chilling interactive drama when the games premiere this
holiday season.

G
ame Connection and E3
are providing a unique
online meeting application
that offers game industry
professionals the opportunity
to meet with one another and
demonstrate their products at E3.
Since 2007, Game Connection has
linked more than 400 developers,
publishers, distributors and service
buyers, leading to approximately
$1 million dollars worth of new
business relationships each year.
Game Connection at E3 allows
potential business partners to set

free online Meeting Application at
the show. This unique application
allows E3 attendees and exhibitors
to create their own profiles, browse
other attendees’ profiles, upload
projects, request meetings and
create pre-show event schedules.
The application also suggests
potential matches and allows
registrants to browse for creative
talent, QA, middleware and tools,
outsourcing options, producers and
acquisition managers.
In the past, E3 attendees who
used the Game Connection Meeting Application met with some of
the biggest development teams
and publishers in the industry, including Electronic Arts, 2K Games,
Capcom, Ubisoft and many more.
Caspar Gray, acquisitions
manager of Square Enix Europe,
said, “We use Game Connection
because it’s a dedicated business
development event. You meet
with developers in a really efficient
way—quick-fire 30-minute meetings without any distractions.”
“The Online Meeting Application
has been conceived to make
it easy to secure face-to-face
meetings with prospective business
partners. We are proud to bring our
technology to E3 and allow people
to take advantage of easy access
to key players from all over the
world to present completed games,
pitch services or showcase projects
in process that are available for
publishing and distribution deals,”
says Pierre Carde, managing
director, Game Connection.
Game Connection is the
official provider of the E3 Meeting
Application. For more information
about the application, E3 attendees
