Barry County Regional Stockyards opens under new owners
Bob Sorensen, Rob Sorensen, and Junior Galyen,
all locals, are all proud
owners of the newly operating Barry County Regional Stockyards located
in Exeter formerly known
as MO-Ark Livestock Marketing Center. Each one
of these men have backgrounds of raising cattle in
hometown farms and have
attended cattle auctions for
as long as they can remember.
The Sorensen family
has four generations of cat-
tleorkers and has been involved in this line of work
since the 1950’s. “I attended my first cattle sale when
I was only a week old,” said
Rob.
“My whole life has revolved around the sale
barn business; it is what I
love to do. I started buying
my own cattle at age 10 and
driving myself to the sale
barn at 15,” said Bob. The
Sorensen family owned
the Monett Sale Barn in
the 50’s and have been involved in other auctions
throughout the years.
Junior Galyen has also
been raised in the cattle
industry his entire life. Junior’s father, Dayne, is a
cattle auctioneer and still
occasionally sells at the
auction. For 13 years, Junior owned the previous
Exeter Sale Barn, and six
years later, has returned to
continue the business.
The auction has many
people working every week
to keep things running
smoothly. The field men
include Dayne, Jeff Sorensen, Kevin Ruddick and
auctioneer Rusty Stone.
Stone has sold at many different auctions throughout
the years. Cattle auctions
in Springdale Ark., Fayetteville, Ark., and Springfield
are just a few examples of
where he has previously
sold.
Currently, the building
is being remodeled. They
are putting up walls to separate the restaurant area,
installing a 6 foot by 8 foot
glass double door, and have
future plans to open the
catwalk, expand the men’s

rest room and add private
offices. The facility offers a
breakfast and lunch special
in the restaurant during the
day of the sale.
A unique feature of this
new operational auction is
that cattle will not be the
only thing they sell. Chickens, ducks, pigs and sheep
are all welcome too. There
are 30 minutes of the sale
devoted to the smaller animals. “If things take off well
with the small animals, we

“We are wanting the sale
to get as large as the public
will allow, while still containing a down-home feel.”
Some things that this
cattle auction will offer that
others do not is the cattle
are represented well. You
will find professionalism
and honesty when working
with the staff, they keep

Charlea Mills
A man was injured north
of Shell Knob when his motorcycle crashed on Missouri
39.
Robert D. Hawkins, 55,
of Fair Grove, was headed
northbound on MO 39 when
he failed to negotiate a curve,
according to the Missouri
State Highway Patrol. After
failing to make the curve,
Hawkins’ 2006 Honda 1000
motorcycle ran off the right
side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting him.
Hawkins was transported
to Mercy Hospital in Springfield with moderate injuries.
He was wearing a helmet at

or hard to understand, and
there are overnight pens.
“One of our major perks
is that our cattle simply
shrink less. The cattle at
our facility are not jostled
around. We also appreciate
everybody whether they
have one calf or four trailer
loads,” said Rob.
Bob added that, “A positive aspect of our auction
is that we make sure our
overnight cattle are fed and
taken care of. We have people available late in the evenings, and we are always
available to unload them
24/7 if they allow us to sell
them.”
The auction is better
than what anybody had expected. “We have a wide
variety of people coming to
sell their cattle. Folks from
Shell Knob, Berryville, Eureka Springs, Bentonville,
Aurora, Joplin and Neosho
are just a few that we have
seen so far,” said Rob.
“We all have lived in the
area and feel that there is

Barry County Livestock
Yards is currently seeking a
venture in part with Country Dodge that would provide a series of events with
door prizes, all day activities and possibly a pig roast
in the future.
A variety of businesses
and people were instrumental in getting the Barry
County Regional Stockyards up and running.
From legal services
from Ellis, Cupps & Cole,
to Barry County Abstract,
to photography by Jeremy
Huse, and friendly support from Mike Carr, Gary
Fields and John Hendricks
and many others, it has
truly been a group effort.
“This has always been
a dream of ours. If you
love doing something, you
are more successful. All of
us have ran different successful businesses, but this
is where we truly love to
be and want to spend our
time. We are excited about
the new facility and opportunities for us and the customers. We want to thank
our community for such
a tremendous amount of

MSHP says watch for
Mercy to offer free health
buses during back-to-school screenings in Shell Knob
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds drivers
that schools throughout the
state are starting their 20152016 school year. It will be a
big change for these young
people after the summer
break of fun in the sun,
sleeping in, going to camp,
or summer employment. Instead, young people will be
walking, biking, and driving to school, which brings
a change in traffic patterns.
It is critical for drivers to be
alert, especially near school
zones, playgrounds, and bicycle paths. School buses
and parents taking their
children to school will join
other motorists on the road
and affect the morning and
afternoon commute. Whatever route you drive, expect
this additional traffic and
prepare by allowing extra
time to reach your destination.
Afternoons can be especially dangerous. Most traffic crashes involving young
drivers (under the age of 21)
in 2014 occurred between
3 p.m. and 4 p.m., when
school typically lets out.
Drivers need to be aware
of the increased traffic during this time—not just in
areas around school, but
all around town. Remember: Many of these drivers
are inexperienced. It is important to encourage those
young drivers to remember
driving is a full-time job.
Using a cell phone, texting,
or adjusting the radio can
be the distraction that leads
to a traffic crash. Texting is
against the law for anyone
under the age of 22.
Missouri law also states
that on a two-lane road, if
a school bus is stopped and
displaying warning signals
while loading or unloading
children, drivers must stop
when meeting and following the bus. However, it is
only necessary to stop on
a four-lane highway when
following the bus. Drivers,
when you see a stopped
school bus, be alert. Children may not be aware of
traffic and dart unexpectedly into the roadway.
In 2014, four people were
killed and 374 people were
injured in school bus crashes. Missouri experienced
936 traffic crashes involving school buses last year.
It’s important for drivers to
pay attention, especially in
areas where schoolchildren
are traveling to and from
Missouri’s schools. Parents
are encouraged to talk to
their children about riding
a bus, walking, or driving
to school in a safe manner.
If they ride a bike, please
make sure they wear a helmet and follow traffic laws.
Let’s help Missouri students
return to school safely.
Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash
victims who are required to
be restrained are NOT at
the time of the traffic crash.
The Patrol urges motorists
to protect themselves and
their passengers by making
sure everyone in the vehicle
is properly restrained in a
seat belt or child restraint.

Are you at risk of having
diabetes, heart disease or
other chronic conditions? It
may be time to “Know Your
Numbers,” the focus of a
health fair Central Crossing
Senior Center.
The public is invited to
attend the Aug. 18 event.
Participants can expect free
blood sugar and albumin
screenings, as well as tests
for BMI, waist measurement, blood pressure and
pulse oximetry, which helps
detect heart problems. There
will also be balance screenings using Biodex to identify
fall risks.
The following reducedcost lab screenings will be
offered:
Comprehensive health
panel (complete metabolic
profile, lipid profile, complete blood count), $15
PSA Test (prostate cancer
screening), $10
Hgb A1c (average blood
glucose), $5
EKG (heart screen), $10
PFT (lung screen), $10
TSH (thyroid test), $5
The health fair on Tuesday, Aug. 18, will run from
7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Central Crossing Senior Center,
located at 20801 YY 15, in
Shell Knob, Mo. No registration is required; participants
will be screened on a firstcome, first-served basis.
Also remember to fast for 12
hours prior to having your
blood drawn. Healthy refreshments will be provided.
The health fair is a partnership with Mercy, which
began offering therapy services at the center in July.
The new Mercy addition
is staffed two days a week
by a physical therapist and
volunteer, and includes a
private room and exercise
equipment for physical therapy, evaluations and treatment. In order to utilize the
services, patients will first
need to consult a doctor.
To learn more about the
health fair, or services offered by Mercy at Central
Crossing Senior Center, call
