Alice Women’s Institute Donation
The Alice Women’s Institute recently presented their donation of twenty five “fidget blankets” for
Miramichi Lodge residents. Nancy Lemire, Client Programs Supervisor at Miramichi Lodge explains,
“These blankets are designed for our residents who have dementia and just need something purposeful to busy themselves with (hence.... fidget blankets). The ladies handmade the 25 blankets from a
variety of textures and objects that dementia residents find interesting and stimulating, as their busy
hands search for something to occupy themselves with as the disease progresses.” The quilts come in
a variety of themes and are made to provide warmth and security for residents.

On the staff front, we have implemented a new electronic training

of annual re-training topics; this new software allows staff to complete these training requirements at computers throughout the
Home, rather than taking staff away from the resident home areas/
work areas. In the future, we plan to make general interest topics
available to residents/families and volunteers.
I hope you are enjoying the great summer weather with family and
friends. We have been busy working on a number of projects to
advance our strategic plan. Under the initiative to improve/
increase onsite services for residents, I am very happy to advise
you that a mobile vision clinic will be held at the Home, providing
there is sufficient interest. Please see the attachment that explains
this new service in more detail, noting that there is no obligation to
participate. In addition, thanks to a generous donation from the
At the same time, we have been advancing our collaboration with

Foundation Update
Hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing summer. Things
haven’t slowed down here in the Foundation office. Plans
for two upcoming events are well underway; so save the
following dates:
Tuesday, August 26h from 1:00-4:00 pm we are hosting
our second annual Fiddle-fest. Our host Art Jamieson
and Foundation member Brian Wilson are working on the
entertainment and the line-up promises to be a very entertaining one! Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children
under 10.
Saturday, October 4th the Stone Fence Theatre group
will be here performing ‘G’day, We’re From the Valley, EH!’ The doors open at 6:00 pm and the show starts
at 7:00 pm.
Tickets for both events are also available at our reception
desk.
You can purchase tickets for the Stone Fence performance on line at www.stonefence.ca
Our 12th Annual Gala – ‘Live It Up’ held in May was
another great success. Though the number of attendees
was down somewhat a good time was had by all. The
band of Landry and Madill kept the dance floor full all
night and of course the meal provided by Ullrich’s was
delicious!! When all was said and done we have $20,000
to help enhance the lives of our residents.
I don’t want to rush the season, but also watch for the
date of our annual Christmas Craft Sale slated for November.

Resident - Doreen Haza
Employee - Pat Guimond
Volunteer - Faye Culleton
Born on October 26,
1929, Doreen grew up in
Fernie, British Columbia,
with an older brother
who was a judge on the
B.C. Supreme Court and
a younger sister. Doreen
completed her academics
with teacher training and
Bachelor of Arts courses. Her first job was
a secretarial position with a chartered accountant. Doreen’s next position was with
the purchasing department at the University
of British Columbia. “It was the best job I
ever had. I started as a Clerk 4, became a
Junior buyer, and was eventually promoted
to a Senior Buyer,” she said. “Without business training, you had to develop it along
the way.”
Doreen’s first teaching job was in Port Coquitlam B.C. She really enjoyed the arts and
dancing. She decided to return to university
to attain her Bachelor of Arts. It was when
Doreen was teaching at a military base
school on Vancouver Island that she learned
about opportunities to teach abroad in the
Department of National Defense base
schools. Doreen’s posting was in Germany
where she met a man named Michael Haza.
He was also teaching abroad and would
become her future husband. Coincidentally, Michael just happened to grow up in
Alliston, Ontario. Their wedding ceremony
was held in Switzerland on July 9, 1963.
This began many travel adventures throughout Europe, and after two years, they returned to Aurora, Ontario where Michael’s
supporting school board originated. One
month before they returned to Canada, Doreen and Michael were overjoyed to welcome the birth of their only daughter, Catherine. After a number of years and a promising job opportunity, they moved to Pembroke. Catherine now has a lovely daughter, Sarah, the apple of her Grandmother’s
eye!
Doreen enjoyed sewing for herself and the
family, painting, crafts, writing letters and
staying very involved in the community
through volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society, Ladies Auxiliary, The Lung
Association, The Royal Canadian Legion,
Theater and Arts, and the Pembroke Skating Club. The Doreen McKay Haza Figure
Skating Award was initiated in 2008, for the
skater that demonstrated passion and commitment to the sport.
Doreen has been a resident of Miramichi
Lodge since August 2011.
Pat Guimond was born
and raised in Pembroke
to wonderful parents,
Patrick and Evelyn
Cooney. Pat had one
brother and recalls a
wonderful childhood in
various
locations
throughout the valley
including the Alice, Round Lake and
Barry’s Bay areas. She notes that her mom
was the greatest cook and could really sew!
Pat made many friends wherever she lived.
After finishing school in Pembroke, Pat
entered the work force at AECL. She met
her husband in Deep River and can’t believe
fifty years have gone by! They have three
daughters, Kelly, Shelley and Tammy, who
all work in the medical field. They enjoy
their five grandchildren. Similar to her
childhood, Pat’s adult life has seen them
live in Chalk River, Renfrew and Pembroke.
After Pat’s children were raised, she was
ready to return to the workforce. She decided upon Miramichi Lodge as her mom
had been a resident and was impressed with
“the excellent care she received from the
caring staff”. Over a proud career of thirtyfive years, Pat has worked in both the dietary and housekeeping departments. Pat
says that she enjoys the contact with the
residents and would not change a thing –
‘being around the residents makes my day,
often before I have the opportunity to make
their day”. She adds that Miramichi Lodge
is a great place to work. Pat loves to spend
time with her grandchildren, cooking and
her dog, ‘Chance’. She notes that most of
all, she looks forward to going to work at
the Lodge. Pat wishes to thank her wonderful co-workers for the friendships she has
made over the years, but ends by saying,
most of all, she wishes to thank the residents.
Pat, we thank you for thirty-five years of
dedication and hard work, and wish many
happy times ahead with your family.
Faye Culleton was born in
Pembroke and raised in
Sudbury. She left Sudbury for Montreal, where
she worked in the Registrar’s office and took
courses at McGill University. On one trip from
Montreal back to Sudbury, Faye stopped in Pembroke to visit her
grandmother where she ‘fell’ for a young
man at the Chapeau Fair - Faye and Morris
(MJ) have now celebrated more than 41
years together – how romantic is that?! She
shared that their daughter Jennifer has
brought so much joy to their lives. They
enjoy spending time in Ottawa with their
grandsons Graeme and Declan. Faye also
worked in the Guidance Department at
Lockerby Composite High School in Sudbury and then later at AECL where she describes her position as a ‘Girl Friday’ as it
was an ongoing learning experience where
her duties changed on a daily basis. Faye
then worked for 29 years as the school secretary at Bishop Smith, first as an elementary school and then as a high school. She
shared that she cannot remember a day that
she did not want to go to work – noting that
Bishop had the “best staff and the greatest
students…I never met a student I did not
like!”
It is clear that family is very important to
Faye; when she is not with her daughter and
grandsons, she enjoys playing golf, skiing,
snow-shoeing and reading. Faye and MJ
have also travelled to Canada’s East coast,
the British Isles, Florida, Europe and Vegas,
noting that they still have the West on their
list.
Faye stated that, after spending most of her
career with young people, she thought she
would like to help seniors; “Someone once
said the people who came up through the
hard times were the greatest generation –
just a smile or an offer to help is appreciated
so much…they just want to be treated with
dignity and respect and there is so much I
can learn from them”. Faye also added that
she enjoys working with the staff, “they are
so friendly and kind – Miramichi Lodge
should be very proud of their staff”. While
Faye loves volunteering with the Pastoral
Care Program, it is clear that she doesn’t do
it for our thanks – “I am thanked each time I
look into the eyes of a resident and remember my own parents and how much I loved
them”. That said Faye, we do thank you,
like all of our volunteers, who somehow
make time in your busy lives to contribute to
the quality of life for our residents.
