As parents of children who have
graduated from Summit Speech
School, we are honored to
welcome you here today. We
have each experienced firsthand
the success of Summit Speech
School, and our children are a
testament to their good work.
Between us, we have four deaf
children, all of whom listen,
speak, and attend mainstream
schools alongside their hearing peers, without the use of sign language.
Summit Speech School has long been blessed with hundreds of individuals
and organizations whose consistent and generous contributions allow the
school to enable deaf or hard of hearing children to become full participants
in a hearing world. This year, the school’s programs and services will reach
more than 200 children throughout the state of New Jersey.
We sincerely appreciate your attendance at this event, and we are grateful
and encouraged by the loyal and generous commitment of so many of
our friends. We know you receive many requests for support and deeply
appreciate that, once again, you chose to support Summit Speech School.
We also truly appreciate the many businesses that have supported our journal
and auctions. Please thank these businesses with your patronage.
Coordinating this event has been a wonderful experience. We would like
to extend our thanks to the 23rd Annual Spring Benefit committee members
for all of their efforts. We also thank Executive Director Dr. Pamela Paskowitz
and the Board of Trustees for their support of our efforts. In addition, we
thank Calli Heenan, Rose Mathesius, Bruce Naidoff and Ellen Tepper in the
Development Office for their hard work and dedication.
Finally, and most importantly, we thank our families for their unwavering
support and encouragement, which made everything possible!

Welcome to our 23rd Annual Spring Benefit, featuring
fine jewelry and handbag designer Kara Ross! We
are pleased you are able to join us on this day when
you can enjoy time with your friends while supporting
a very special school.
As Executive Director of Summit Speech School for the
past nine years, I have had the privilege of working
with many children and their families to continue the
mission begun in 1967: to teach children who are
deaf and hard of hearing to learn to listen and talk. Our mission remains as
relevant as ever. Dramatic advances in medicine and technology have taken
place—advances that are assisting children with hearing loss at levels never
before thought possible. Cochlear implants and state-of-the-art hearing aids
now allow us to achieve results that would have been unimaginable when
Summit Speech School was founded.
But the genius of medicine and technology tells only a part of the story, which
goes back to what those first few students did on their first day in the little blue
house on Upper Overlook Road, and continue to do more than 45 years later.
Our children work hard: work hard to hear, work hard to speak, and work hard
to learn. Our teachers, trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters know that no
matter how hard it is for us to teach, or to manage, or to raise money, or to
make tough decisions, nothing is as hard as learning to listen and talk.
Thank you for being with us today, and thank you for all that you do to support
our children.
Sincerely,
Pamela A. Paskowitz, Ph.D.

Abel Flores
Abel Flores has been a mainstay of downtown Summit
for about 17 years as the proprietor and genial host
of Florez Tobacconist. He’s been a friend of Summit
Speech School since at least 1999, and for the past
five years he has sponsored an annual golf event that
has generated more than $31,000 to assist the deaf
and hard of hearing children at our School.
Years ago, while working for a lumber company in California, Abel learned
about a poor family in Mexico who had a disabled son and a daughter with
hearing loss. The family was trying to save money for hearing aids, but there
was a waiting list in Mexico that would take years. Abel went through the
phone books and started calling U.S. hearing aid manufacturers – and finally
reached one that agreed to help. When Abel arrived at their offices, they
donated hearing aids, batteries and instructional materials worth thousands of
dollars for him to take to Mexico.
Told that the family wanted to meet him, Abel was hesitant at first, but finally
agreed. He met the whole family, who were so appreciative of what he
had done for someone he didn’t even
know! Abel kept in touch over the years,
and the young girl he helped went onto
graduate from college.
Abel has an unforgettable, larger than
life personality and is probably one of
the more colorful members of our local
business community. But beneath it all is
a warm, generous, and caring heart that
takes great joy in doing good for others.
Abel has three children: Erica, Abel,
and Christian. He lives in Summit with
his wife Maggie.

Neil Kleinwaks
The story of how Neil Kleinwaks first got involved
with Summit Speech School is a very personal
one. Back in 2003, Neil was the owner of Neil’s
Nosh, a well-known deli in Martinsville. One of
his steady customers was Carl Zerbo, who would
come in with his four-year-old daughter Michaela.
Neil and Michaela formed an instant bond – and
when Neil found out Michaela had hearing loss
and was learning to speak at Summit Speech
School, he knew he wanted to do something to help out. His first step was to
donate a gift certificate for the deli as an auction gift at this very Benefit. Then
he hit on the idea of an annual golf tournament to raise money for the School.
Since that time, Neil’s golf outing has raised more than $71,000 to help
Michaela and kids just like her. He closed Neil’s Nosh and now runs two
businesses in Bridgewater - Neil’s All American Grill and JC Klein Estate
Jewelry. Michaela and her family moved to Florida several years ago, but
Neil’s dedication to Summit Speech School has never wavered.
Neil and his wife Michelle live in Martinsville and have two children: Julia,
age 11, and Cassidy, age 8.
A l e t t e r t o S u m m i t S p ee c h Sc h o o l
from a n A l um n i Par ent—H e idi Ze rb o
After Michaela graduated from Summit Speech School in 2002, we moved
to upstate New York, where Michaela was mainstreamed into first grade
with services such as a TOD, FM System, Sound Field System and speech
therapy. As it turns out, Michaela is our little tomboy! She started to play
basketball and little league baseball in fourth grade. She thrived socially,
academically and athletically.
In 2009, we moved to my home town of Naples, Florida. We enrolled
Michaela and her older sister and brother in private school. Michaela has
been a straight Honor Roll student and is a member of The National Honor
Society. Michaela played Varsity softball and was on the Varsity swim team
in 7th grade. Since the 9th grade, she has played JV basketball, volleyball
and track and field. She not only plays school sports, she is also on a travel
volleyball team, National AAU volleyball, travel basketball and National
AAU basketball.
Michaela is in her sophomore year of high school and already has her college
plans mapped out. She wants to attend Rochester Institute of Technology to
study computer engineering. She aspires to make the National USA Deaf
Olympic Volleyball Team.
Congratulations Summit Speech School! Look at what you helped this little
girl achieve! None of this would have been possible without you! We are
forever grateful.

KARA ROSS
One of Kara Ross’s fondest memories of her
childhood is a safari to Africa with her parents
at the age of thirteen. To commemorate the
trip, Kara’s parents allowed her to choose a
native gemstone of her choice. When they
returned to their home, Kara was told she could design and create a ring
with the tourmaline she chose. After a trip to “Jeweler’s Row” in downtown
Philadelphia, Kara decided to create a square cut ring on an 18-karat gold
band with diamonds. “To know that I could create something wholly original
at a young age really affected me.”
In 2003 she founded the company Kara Ross, which has rapidly grown from
its origins in fine jewelry and is known for its bold and unique use of exotic
skins and gemstones across several jewelry lines, handbags, and belts. The
newest addition to the brand is the Kara Ross Gemstone Collection, which
debuted in fall 2010.
Kara’s pieces have been featured internationally in top fashion magazines
such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, W, and Elle. Celebrity fans include Kate
Hudson, Hilary Swank, Cameron Diaz, Eva Mendes, Kate Beckinsale, Eva
Longoria, Anne Hathaway, Demi Moore, Oprah, and Michelle Obama, for
whom she created exclusive gifts made from Magnolia wood that originated
from the White House lawn. During the 2013 Inaugural Parade, Jill Biden
wore a pair of beautiful Kara Ross earrings.
Pieces from her fine jewelry collection can now be seen at the Boston Museum
of Fine Arts, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, and the San
Diego Natural History Museum. Upcoming exhibits include Forbes Gallery,
Cooper-Hewitt, and Gemological Institute of America. Pieces from her various
collections can be purchased at stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman
Marcus, Carolina Herrera, Henri Bendel, and Bloomingdales.
The Women’s Jewelry Association honored Kara by awarding her with the
WJA 2012 Excellence in Design award. Kara was recognized as a woman
who has demonstrated excellence in her field and who has made a significant
contribution to her business and the jewelry industry as a whole.

Summit Speech School
Programs from Birth to High School
Summit Speech School teaches children who are deaf and hard of hearing
to listen and talk so that they may learn alongside their hearing peers in a
mainstream setting. Using intensive speech, language, and auditory training
sessions, along with FM systems, hearing aids, and cochlear implants, the
children learn to maximize their listening, language, and speaking skills. More
than 3,000 children from upwards of 230 communities throughout New Jersey
have attended the school. It is one of only 51 private oral/OPTION schools in
the country teaching children who are deaf and hard of hearing to listen and
talk without the use of sign language.
Parent-Infant Program (birth to age 3)
Our Parent-Infant Program provides support and education to parents and families
so they can (1) understand their child’s deafness, (2) foster growth in their child’s
listening, speech, and language, and (3) advocate for their child with medical
personnel, equipment dealers, and school systems.
Preschool Program (3 to 5 years of age)
Our staff uses intensive small group language/listening teaching. Speech
pathologists, classroom teachers and teaching assistants work as a team to track
the children’s vocabulary, listening skills, speech, syntax, and discourse skills.
Our goal for this intense language/listening practice is to promote more than
one year’s growth in language for every year in the program.
Itinerant Mainstream Support Program
(4 through 18)
Our Itinerant Mainstream Support Program provides educational and technical
support to children and teachers in mainstream programs. Our teachers work
with children in their local schools, helping them with their academic subjects
while tracking and assessing their language skills. We not only help teachers
address the students’ learning issues, we also give children the confidence to
advocate for themselves.

How You Can Help
Summit Speech School offers unique, effective and intensive programs for
deaf and hard of hearing children. We rely heavily on external support from
individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Make a Cash Donation
By making a cash gift to the Annual Fund you will help the school’s children
who are deaf or hard of hearing have the opportunity to become part of
the hearing world. Make a direct contribution by check, Visa, MasterCard,
American Express or online through our website: www.summitspeech.org
Make a Pledge
Rather than making an outright cash gift, you may prefer to spread out the
payments on a schedule that is convenient to you.
Support our Events
Take part in our Annual Spring Benefit and golf tournaments – or host your
own event.
Give a Gift of Stock
Gifting appreciated securities (stock) can be beneficial to both you and
Summit Speech School. Donors making a gift of stock should contact the
school before the transfer is made so that we may credit the donor properly.
Check Your Employer’s Matching
Gift Program
Contact your human resources office to find out if your employer participates
in a matching gift program. You may be able to double the value of a gift
made by you or your spouse.
Remember Summit Speech School
in Your Estate Planning
You can help secure the future financial strength of the School by making
a “planned gift”:
Bequest You can make a provision in your will for the school to receive a fixed
amount, or a certain percentage of your estate, or a remainder amount
after specific distributions have been made.
Life Insurance Policy –
designate Summit Speech School a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.
Our Development Office staff welcomes the opportunity to meet with
you to discuss how you can include the school in your annual and future
charitable plans.

Pluckemin Inn.
Now that sounds delicious.
It’s rare that a restaurant this highly regarded and rewarded
is also this approachable. But that’s what you get at Pluckemin Inn.
Food so good the Star-Ledger called it the “Best Restaurant in New Jersey.”
Wine service that’s won accolades from Food & Wine and the
Grand Award, the wine world’s highest honor.
All in a comfortable setting right in Bedminster.
Join us tonight.

Za c h’ s H ear i n g A i d s
by D e lia Pr es ton, S u m m i t S pee c h Sc ho o l
p re sc h o o l clas s of 2009
One sunny day Zach went to school. He was a smart, athletic,
and a fun boy. When he went inside his teacher said “Hi!” but
Zach said “Congratulations!” and quickly walked away. His
teacher Mrs. Lean was confused.
Then Mrs. Lean told the class to line up. So Zach lined up with
them but he didn’t know why. “Maybe we’re going on a field
trip,” he thought. As the class walked toward the gym, Zach
realized there was an assembly today. Zach didn’t know the
assembly was about snakes. There was a woman from Snake
World and her name was Kay. She asked the kids “Who
wants to hold a snake?” The kids’ hands shot up. Zach looked
around. He didn’t hear what Kay said. This was happening
a lot to him recently. He saw everybody’s hands up so Zach
raised his hand too. Kay called on Zach. Then she took out a
six foot long snake. Zach yelled “Ahhhhh!!” and Zach ran out
of the room.
Mrs. Lean saw him running in the hall. Mrs. Lean yelled “Zach!”
Then he kept running and turned around because he thought
he heard a thump. There standing in the hall was his teacher,
and she was waving hands in the air. Zach thought “Maybe
she’s calling me.” Zach walked over to Mrs. Lean. Mrs. Lean
told him, “Zach, I need to call your mom and tell her you need
to go to the hearing doctor because I think you can’t hear what
everybody is saying. “Hearing doctor,” whispered Zach. “Yes,”
answered Mrs. Lean.
Mrs. Lean called Zach’s mom. Then they walked to the office and
waited for her to come get Zach. Five minutes later, Zach saw
his mother, “Are you ready?” asked his mother, “Yes,” said Zach
and they went to the hearing doctor. When they got there, they
went inside the doctor’s office. The doctor told Zach, “You need
hearing aids.” Zach was nervous because he was worried that
the other kids would make fun of him for having hearing aids.
Also Zach didn’t know what they were. Then the doctor asked,
“What color do you want?” Zach thought that was pretty cool.
He could have any color he wanted! Zach answered, “Green.”
“O.K.,” said the doctor. Then he got green hearing aids. The
doctor told Zach, “Wear them so you can hear better.”
Zach put them in and he could hear everything, even the little
birds chirping outside. Zach and his mom went back to school
and he heard everything. He even heard the other kids saying,
“Your hearing aids are so cool!”
